et lcomFEBRUARY Wethe 2014 edition
I hope that everyone has had a great start to 2014. For me, Christmas already seems an awful long time ago. But then as I was working on the Christmas magazine back in October and November, and by the time you receive this issue I will be working on Mother’s Day and Easter! There does appear to be a lot to look forward to in 2014 as I keep hearing about events across the area that I will endeavour to bring you more details of over the coming months. If you are in contact with the organisers of any of these events then do ask them to get in touch so that we can ensure they get some promotion. There are now 5 magazines that make up the ‘Today Publications’ selection. Tickhill Today will be celebrating its 9th birthday next month and Rossington Today its 8th birthday. Bawtry Today will be 7 this summer and Harworth and Bircotes Today is nearly 3! So before Christmas we launched Bessacarr & Cantley Today which over the course of 2 months reaches 9000 homes. If anyone knows of anyone who might find this magazine (or any of the Today Publications) useful – whether they be a business owner or involved with a local group, school or charity then please do encourage them to get in touch. The March issues will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th February. Apologies if this sounds very early – but it is the 2nd Friday as normal – but the dates of many months this year seem to make this date fall very early in the month!

We wish you a Brassy Christmas Tickhill Music Society is used to performances by small groups. The Christmas concert was no exception, except that the two musicians played at least ten instruments (it was difficult to keep track of the exact number). The virtuosi in question were James Stretton and Iain Jackson, and while Iain confined himself most of the time to accompanying James on the keyboard (both his own electronic instrument and the Society’s grand piano), James displayed his versatility on multiple brass instruments, ranging from piccolo trumpet to bass tuba.
Tickhill Music Society Friday, 14th February 2014 at 8.00 p.m. St. Mary’s Primary School Njalubo Madala, award winning South African baritone and recent guest on BBC Radio Three’s In Tune, accompanied at the piano by William Vann. James is a former member of the Black Dyke Mills Band and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and this background was evident in his dexterity and also the sensitivity of his playing. The programme was equally wide-ranging, from Bach and Handel to arrangements of Christmas carols, and including two pieces specially composed for the duo. Iain revealed his pedigree as a former trombonist in the National Youth Orchestra by switching roles with James in “Santa Baby”, and another item, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” called for accompaniment on the tambourine by a member of the audience (who, it must be said, showed no reluctance). The musical fare may have been light-hearted but it was played with great accomplishment and was the perfect curtainraiser to the festive season. Adrian Hattrell T

What is Truth, and How Do You Know? This is a serious question; one which we all ask, and answer, often unconsciously; how do we know what is true? - Because the newspapers say so? Don’t be silly. - Because politicians assert it? Hardly. - Because Stephen Fry claims to know? I wouldn’t be too confident. - Because the majority of people believe something to be true? Is that the majority of those in my socio-economic group or in my country or throughout the world or throughout history? - Because your mother taught you so? Mine taught me eating fat was good for me and that smoking with a cigarette holder was dignified. - Because my heart is convinced? My heart might well be convinced that I am a brilliant singer that Simon Cowell should promote or that Doncaster Rovers are the country’s best football team – your heart will probably be convinced otherwise. On 8 & 9 February we at Bawtry Evangelical Church are hosting a couple of presentations by a man who engages with one generally assumed, uncriticised claim to absolute truth – the theory of 8 8

Parenting teenagers atheistic evolution. Arthur Green will suggest some unfounded assumptions and even deceptions that its famous proponents keep quiet about. For example, did you know that Richard Dawkins now refuses to engage in public debate with capable Christians who are scientists as he can’t answer their objections? On the Saturday evening Arthur will present a lecture followed by a Q&A at Bawtry Community Library at 7:30pm and on the Sunday he will bring a celebration of Biblical teaching on this important issue at our church service in the New Hall at 10:10am – all are invited to either event; there is no charge other than a willingness to seek for truth.
Come and join us if you have pre teenagers or the real thing! This is a brilliant course I can whole heartily recommend to get you through the teen years. Come learn, share, laugh, cry we are in it together! Starting on Monday 27th January at 1.30pm in Bawtry for 6 weeks. Contact Jo on 719517 for more details of where we are meeting. T

Surplus Food: One Solution Last month I wrote about the economic good sense of shopping locally rather than in supermarkets, this article looks at food waste.
It’s not a secret that there have been food mountains for years, milk and wine mountains were the talk of my childhood. Producers and retailers have to come up with cunning ways to use up the stuff and get it into our store cupboards. Back in the 1960s we hardly knew about yogurt and now in any supermarket there is a plethora of milk based puddings to choose from in the chiller and you find milk and whey in virtually every item of the supermarket shelves. I can’t help thinking, after catering for a load of guests over the Christmas period, what an impossible task it must be second guessing the quantities of which individual foodstuffs will be needed to be grown and marketed by the whole of the UK. Hannah Stoddart from Oxfam’s GROW campaign, speaking on Radio 4s Shared Planet ( 31.12.2013) stated that there is enough food production in the world to feed everyone. But the statistics are harsh, many go hungry whilst many throw away what they cannot eat. There are lots of figures washing around, but this is a shocking one: Up to 50% of all food produced never reaches a human stomach. The causes are many fold some of which are poor infrastructure, poor forecasting by the supermarkets, damaged packaging, inadequate storage facilities and overstocking, the demand for super-market perfect fruit and veg: (30% of vegetable crops grown in the UK are never harvested because of these standards) silly sell-by dates, silly use-by dates and all those BOGOF’s that mean we 10 10

over buy and chuck. Up to half the food bought in the USA and Europe is thrown away by the consumer - it goes into landfill. This is such a shocking statistic that I can hardly believe it, I feel like sticking my hand up saying ‘well, it’s not me’ and I only hope that they are counting the potato peelings and pork chop bones. Issues around waste reduction with regard to Landfill are a whole other story. There are enormous issues around the use of chemical fertilizer, fungicide and insecticide order to increase production, GM foodstuffs, water use and land use. The supermarkets compound the problems by competitive profit focus rather than on a sustainable service to feed the population. And food poverty is not just a third world issue. It’s very real in this country with many working families living below the accepted poverty line – 6.7 million, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and coupled with this, obesity is a growing problem. In early December, in Goldthorpe the first pilot social supermarket opened. Community Shop, the company behind this, will provide chosen shoppers on the cusp of food poverty with access to surplus food at up to 70% discount on normal prices. The aim of this project is to match surplus food with social need. To be eligible one must be on welfare support in that area. Not only will they be able to access cheaper foods – which incidentally are not over the sell-by dates, but also on offer will be cookery skills, home budgeting, debt advice, CV writing etc.
Membership will be for a limited time only. The launch of this supermarket is supported by Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, M&S, Ocado and others. I can’t help wondering that some weeks there will only be tinned pears, baked beans and mincepies on the shelves, and that the cookery-skills-instructors will have a task akin to Ready-Steady-Cook on their hands. But of course I don’t know what all those warehouses of overstocked items really look like, and am sure that this shop will have a pretty well rounded stock of items. When the Goldthorpe shop has proved a success, (and how can it not?) Then many other shops will open including in London. The brains behind this idea should be applauded for their drive to make this happen, ending the misery of food poverty in the UK. It’s not a new idea, it has been tried and tested in Europe, but it is new here. Excess food will go where it is most needed rather than Landfill Statistics from Joseph Rowntree foundation, Oxfam and Institute of Mechanical Engineers

I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering how the excitement of a new toy soon faded, but for me the big box in which it was wrapped provided entertainment for a much greater length of time because it could be turned into a car, a bus, a den or a robot. Recently I was asked to apply this theory when designing a family garden: a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a big blue climbing frame; a bright red slide, or a plastic swing. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can ‘accidentally’ find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds. Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud (surely you must have made mud pies or sloppy dosh when you were a child – for those who didn’t its mud and water mixed in a bucket or bowl with a stick then left to harden in the sun). Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. I 22 22

A place to explore & create love to see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, but has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; paths to race bikes on; washing line poles to climb, and a small bridge to cross when escaping from trolls…the usual thing! Parents also often ask about child-friendly plants, and it’s a tricky question to provide a quick answer for. There are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly to very toxic, but statistically (research shows) that the number of deaths is tiny. The vast majority taste so disgusting that your child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!). Foxgloves, fungi and Delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include Daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of Rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful,
but we still grow them in schools. I think garden education at a young age is the key, and given most under 3’s won’t be outside alone in the garden it shouldn’t be a problem … anyway, they’ll be too busy playing to eat the plants!. T
Until next time, happy gardening ,

Care for Cats
AGES 4-14 CHILDREN WELCOME FROM ALL AREAS
Sue Clarke together with a small but dedicated group of volunteers takes in unwanted cats from across Nottinghamshire.”Our aim is to provide every cat in our care with as happy a rescue experience as possible and to give them the best start possible in their new homes” explained Sue.
ACTIVITIES TO INCLUDE: Science Experiments, Quizzes, Painting, Drawing and Craft Modelling. Plus lots more activities differentiated for all ages. Full day - £25.00 8 am – 6pm morning & afternoon snack provided - Packed lunch required
To this end, Care for Cats do not house the cats in a rescue centre, but look after them in small numbers in foster homes. “We ask for a minimum donation of £50.00 for every cat or kitten we home, which is exceptional value for money ! Every kitten is thoroughly health checked, has been tested for Feline Aids and Leukaemia, has been treated for fleas and worms and is triple vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. Obviously, there is often a massive shortfall between the donation given and the cost of treatment so fund raising is an essential part of our work”. The group is always looking out for suitable “forever” homes for their cats - homes where the high standard of care initially set by the rescue is continued. If you are interested in becoming one of those homes or would like to support the work of Care for Cats by providing good quality bric-a-brac, books etc please contact the following numbers. On Saturday 15th March there will be a Charity Auction at Everton Village Hall at 2pm. We are looking for items to auction so please let us know if you have anything. Also please come along to support Care for Cats on the day. Sue Clarke 07984 883583 Ken and Margaret Atkinson 01777 704555 Mary Winder 01777 816328 T

Bawtry Town Council - FEBRUARY 2014 the council know, as council will be making a decision on whether or not to re-open the gents block. Contact details at the foot of the newsletter.
Gainsborough Road Toilets In the months leading up to Christmas, it became obvious that someone was intent on anti-social type behaviour affecting the gents block. This was happening regularly and therefore a decision was taken to close the gents block because of the health & safety aspect of the occurrences (excrement on the floors etc,). The toilets were opened, under the responsibility of the town council, as the result of a petition carried out by the business community. They were never intended to be a profit making venture, but to provide a service to visitors/residents of Bawtry. At the moment they are becoming a drain on resources, because users avoid payment whenever possible, unnecessary damage has also been caused in such avoidance activity, and the disgusting activity mentioned above.
Precept Once again the council have voted to keep the parish precept (not the DMBC element) at its current level of £26k for the coming year 1st April, 2014 to 31st March, 2015. This is now the ninth year the Level has been maintained. It should be borne in mind that the precept is levied on residents not businesses. Such business rates go to Central Government, not to parishes.
Fracking Residents will possibly have heard BBC Local news regarding fracking, near Bawtry. Efforts have been made to obtain further detail, none of which has so far been forthcoming. DMBC and NCC (Notts County Council) BDC (Bassetlaw District Council) have at the time of writing not been contacted. If you have a view point, for or against, please let our clerk know in writing so that when/if discussions commence, a balanced knowledgeable argument can be presented to any developer. Contact details at the foot of the newsletter.

Are you too old for love at 80 ? Can you fall in love at 80 or is it too late? What on earth will your family think? And are there too many memories and secrets to make it possible? Everton Village Players explore these questions in their latest production, a beautiful romantic comedy called “The Last Romance” by Tony Award Winning American playwright Joe DiPietro. On an ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph decides to take a different path on his daily walk, one that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love. Ralph a cheeky flirty chap meets the elegant and reserved Carol as they walk their dogs in the park. To Carol’s surprise, they fall in love, much to the dismay of Rose, Ralph’s bitter and jealous sister. This leads to some surprising and dramatic twists.
An interesting feature of the play is “young Ralph”, a wannabe opera singer with a beautiful voice. Operatic selections are used throughout the story, and they work wonderfully. This is a tale that mixes heartbreak with humour, and the central message about seizing life with a passion comes through loud and clear; a golden-years love story that casts a bewitching spell about the power of love at whatever age. Due to growing demand for their productions, The Everton Village Players are putting on an extra night with a discounted ticket. Please ask for information when you call to book your tickets. “The Last Romance” will be performed at Everton Village Hall from 18th – 22nd February at 7.30. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01777 817275 or visit www.evertonvillageplayers. co.uk to book on line. T
