“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Dr Seuss

In the month of his birthday I thought a Dr Seuss quote would be appropriate! World Book Day takes place on Friday 7th March – the date is linked to Dr Seuss’s birthday on 2nd March, and in the UK we use the closest Friday – I bet you didn’t know that! Over recent weeks I have been lucky enough to participate in 2 very different personal development courses – but both of them looking at mind set. Why we still do certain things even though we know they aren’t in our best interests and learning how to overcome barriers that stand in our way of making changes. The quote above was mentioned at one of the courses and touched a nerve with many in the room – particularly those with children. “But everyone else has one Mum” – sound familiar? Our society seems to be all about fitting in, conforming to norms, when in reality we are all individuals, and sometimes thinking outside the box and stepping away from the accepted norms and not accepting ‘but we have always done it this way’ can reap rewards. The April issues will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th March. Also prior warning, that due to badly timed Easter holidays the deadline for the May issues will be very early – Friday 4th April.

Enjoy March and I will back in a months’ time with your April magazine! T

Best wishes, Paula x

A Postcard from

Puglia

I stand absolutely astonished at the view I behold. In front of me lies the Sassi of Matera, as recently as the 1950’s a malaria infested warren of cave houses quoted at the time as being “Italy’s shame”. Fast forward 60 years and I witness a location largely unknown to the British traveller and yet so striking in its presence, and fascinating in its history, it beggars belief that it has not become more firmly entrenched in our must visit map. Accompanied by Antonio our personal English speaking guide we enjoy a two hour walk amongst the houses and such is the interest in the vast labyrinth of houses, churches and underground water systems we manage to ignore for a short time the intense heat of the August sun. The day in Matera came right in the middle of our two week visit to Puglia with a brief stay in Venice en-route. After many years of good intentions we finally make the effort to reach the sun soaked heal of Italy and it’s much talked about cuisine. After the difficult humidity of Venice our arrival in Bari airport with 37degrees of searing dry heat was actually welcome, and after negotiating the weekend holiday traffic on the outskirts of the city we make it to our Trullo Holiday Home within 90 minutes. Just a mile outside the Trullo capital that is Alberobello our converted Trullo sits on its own amongst olive groves and lemon 12 12

It was an evening of mixed emotions on Wednesday 29th January as we listened to Sylvia Atkinson talking about how she finally met her hitherto unknown family after her mother’s startling revelations. We laughed as she recounted her adventures on a long haul flight recovering from ‘flu and wearing a shell suit,(they were very popular at the time!) but we also shared her sorrow at the sadder parts of her story.

Bawtry slimmers are losing weight for good in more ways than one! A group of slimmers from Bawtry are doing their bit for the community and their own health by taking part in a sponsored slim to raise money for The Aurora Cancer Care Centre. Members of the Bawtry Slimming World group, are taking part in a national Slim for Good campaign. The aim of the six-week drive, is to help people to lose weight and improve their health while raising money for a good cause in their local area. The slimmers in the Bawtry group voted for The Aurora Cancer Care Centre to support because it has been a big source of help to several members. Nicky, who runs the group and has lost 3 stone herself, says the Slim for Good campaign will give members of the group an added incentive to

18 18

achieve their weight-loss dreams. She says: “New Year’s resolutions can often become a bit of a distant memory by late February. Now, thanks to Slim for Good, members will also be able to benefit their wider local community by raising funds for The Aurora Centre. Their weight-loss will literally become The Aurora Centre’s gain!” “If you’ve struggled with your weight for a long time, then making that decision to take control can be a big one but hopefully knowing that every pound you lose will go towards helping The Aurora Centre will be a great incentive to make that step. And I would assure anyone who’s thinking about losing weight that Slimming World is the very best way to get started. Not only will you be able to follow a simple healthy eating plan that means you’ll never have to go

hungry and be able to enjoy hundreds of healthy foods without weighing, counting and measuring, you’ll also get the best support to develop healthy habits for life and overcome any potential pitfalls in your journey.” Anyone wanting to take part in the six-week campaign can do so any time from the 27th February. Sponsorship forms are available from the Bawtry Slimming World group, which is held every Thursday at 3.30pm & 5.30pm. And as an added incentive to members joining the campaign, between 24th February and 15th March, who buy a special six-week Countdown will pay just £27.25 (saving £12.45). New members who buy a 12-week Countdown during the same period will get free membership and two free weeks included for £49.50 (saving £19.90). T

community Well February has come with not only wet cold weather, but an onslaught of lovely puppies and stray dogs. We had a lovely little stray come to us one week and proudly produced 9 puppies the week after, mum and babies are doing well. I hate to think what could have happened to her and her babies had she not been with us.

Finding a forever home

A member of the public also found 2 puppies in a box which we are now taking care of. The people that came to our gates and let a cat out of the car, what did they imagine it would do? Knock on our door and ask to be taken in?! The poor thing is still living rough as we have been unable to catch it. This is unbelievable, would it have been so difficult to put it in a carrier and leave at our gates if they were so desperate. The stories are endless and we could fill the page with them, however we are here to pick up the pieces and give dogs and cats a chance to find that forever home. We are always looking for foster homes for elderly dogs to spend their last few years in comfort. Do you think you can help? Here at the Sanctuary we are having building work carried out so everything is a little chaotic we will be open as usual but apologies for any disruption. Don’t forget us when you are walking around the supermarket we are always desperate for washing up liquid, black bin liners and wash powder. Every little helps. Now some fundraising events that you may be interested in. 22 22

Good news for Landlords on Section 21 Notices

In the recent case of Spencer v Taylor, the Court of Appeal gave a decision that will make it easier and quicker for Landlords to end an Assured Shorthold Tenancy by serving a Section 21 Notice. Previously it was accepted that: (i) A s. 21(1)(b) Notice should be served before or on the day the fixed term of the tenancy ended; and (ii)A s. 21(4)(a) Notice should be served after the fixed term has expired

However, in the above case, the Judge confirmed that a Section 21(1)(b) Notice, giving 2 calendar months notice, can be used before and after the fixed term has ended. This is good news for Landlords as Section 21(1)(b) Notices are much easier to draft than Section 21(4)(a) Notices. Indeed, many Landlords’ claims for possession have failed due to poorly drafted Section 21(4)(a) Notices. Furthermore, using a Section 21(1)(b) Notice will usually entitle a Landlord to recover possession more quickly than a Section 21(4)(a) Notice.

Garden View

No-one Likes a Soggy Bottom!

It’s a phrase normally associated with BBC2’s Great British Bake Off, but it’s not just cooks who go to great lengths to ensure their produce (pastry in this case) doesn’t end up with a soggy bottom, it affects gardeners too! I’m not talking about sitting on wet grass, or toppling over in the veg plot after too much potting-shed homebrew, but about the poor plants we expect to grow in badlydrained soil. Out in the wild, a plant’s survival depends on whether its seeds blow into a dry rock face or a sticky clay soil puddle, and that’s fine because one will die while the other thrives. But it’s very different in the domestic garden, where overenthusiastic humans buy anything that looks pretty, dig a hole and expect it to bloom. The right plant for the right soil is as important, if not more so than its tolerance to sun or shade. Studies show that plants cannot survive for more than just a few days if left in standing water. It’s a little known fact that roots need air too … well, most plants that is. You see there’s a clever lot who have adapted over the years to thrive in such conditions and they’re commonly known as bog plants. I understand it’s not the most glamorous name, unlike 30 30

BAWTRY TODAY

their closely-related cousins such as water lilies, which are known as hydrophytes. Plants that thrive in heavy, wet clay soils, which are damp but not permanently waterlogged, include the beautiful bold leaves of the Hosta, the feathery plumes and delectably dissected foliage of the Astilbe, and any of the Primulas, which are ideal for low-growing spring colour. For fern lovers, Osmunda regalis is a favourite or for a splash of summer colour in full sun try Lobelia cardinalis. If you have a larger garden and need to fill areas of damp soil, try the herbaceous Rodgersia which look great planted in drifts, and if you have a really large area why not try the prickly rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata: children will love standing under the giant leaves of its huge green umbrella! If you don’t have a boggy area, but would like to try growing some of these plants for yourself, why not create one? If you dig out a ‘mini pond’ and then add an old liner or plastic sheet, pierce it several times with a fork and then add the soil back in, you can plant a selection of the plants above. You’ll need to make sure it doesn’t dry out in

the summer, so a shady location usually works best, and if you’ve only got a teeny garden, try the fly-eating pitcher plants Sarracenia. They will provide a talking point. Until next month, enjoy your garden

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Giving up smoking is easy. . .

I’ve done it loads of times Two months ago you might well have made a New Year’s resolution but I fully understand that it has been impossible to keep up, and it certainly isn’t your fault; what with the appalling weather, that unexpected bill, pressure at work and a string of celebration meals, nobody could reasonably have expected you to stop smoking/ lose weight/ walk 10 miles a week/ give 2 hours a week undivided attention to your child or whatever it was you resolved to do differently in 2014. Of course not, you are only human after all.

The problem is not in the breaking of a resolution but in the then giving up. There is absolutely no reason why you should not get back on the horse as John Wayne said; it can only do you good. Many people feel that they are not moral enough to be a serious Christian, or that they have done something that excludes them. Jesus taught that God forgives us every time we recognise our need of it and even after 70 failures every day we shouldn’t throw in the towel but get up and try again. Peter was 32 32

the most committed disciple and yet he messed up terribly when he denied even knowing Jesus; another disciple, Thomas, failed when his cynicism caused him to distrust his friends and Paul was deeply ashamed of his days persecuting the church. Yet these three men did not give up but got back up on the horse, changed the world and we marvel at their holiness, calling them saints. So, even though it is two months since you made that resolution, throw that packet of 20 away, dig out your trainers, turn off the tv and start again. If you need to do a similar thing spiritually, you’ll find not only God gladly welcomes you back but any semi-decent Christian church will do too.

First society concert for 2014 Tickhill Music Society’s first concert of 2014 was a piano recital given by John Paul Ekins. Notable features of the evening were the verbal introductions given by the artist - richly informative and illuminating. The evening began with a Mozart Fantasy (K475) played crisply and with assurance. There followed the Impromptu in A flat, Op.90 No. 4 - melodic but with overtones of Schubertian pathos. Next came the Holiday Diary, Op. 5, an early work by Benjamin Britten in three movements. This gave impressionistic accounts of a splashy early morning bathe, a serene trip on a sailing boat and finally a boisterous Fun Fair. After the interval there were three Intermezzi (Op.117) by Brahms, the first with a yearning melody, the second rather solemn and the third, slow, dark and march-like. The evening was rounded off in

Local Dance Fitness Charity was 3 years old in February Move and Inspire Me who provide fitness classes in Bawtry and the surrounding areas have just had a birthday! It was 3 years ago when 120 people made a long and expectant queue in the street outside the first ever Zumba Class in Tickhill. Now, 180 people - all different shapes, ages and levels of fitness enjoy the not-for-profit classes a couple of times week in the Parish Church Hall in Bawtry and in other local venues in the area. There is an open invitation to come along and join this vibrant community who meet for a mixed ability Dance Fitness Fusion class (incorporating all the latest moves from Zumba, Aerobics and FitSteps) on Friday mornings at 9.30am. Or come and try Body Conditioning - a mixture of Toning and Aerobics using light hand weights - on Wednesdays at 9am which is very suitable for older active as well as younger adults. All abilities are welcomed. There are 7 other classes available nearby too so there is bound to be something to suit your needs. After great success in other areas, Deborah, a retired Senior Lecturer in Psychology and longtime meditator has been asked to provide her new style of Weight Loss Programme in the Cantley area. Everton Village Players

Male Voice Choir

ROSSINGTON MALE VOICE CHOIR are again appealing for new members to join us.

from Berlin to Broadway

Looking for a great night out? Then you can do no better that enjoy a fabulous cabaret evening organized by Everton Village Players who proudly present “FROM BERLIN, TO BROADWAY”… an evening of sophisticated, sexy & subversive cabaret music starring The Midnight Cabaret Band with Katherine Pledger as Chanteuse, Iain Jackson on Piano and James Stretton on Flügelhorn & Drums Katherine is a nationally acclaimed cabaret artiste performing in the nation’s foremost clubs & nightspots usually as her seductive alter ego – Miss Liberty Pink! As the title of the show suggests the first half is firmly set in pre-war Berlin with songs including “They Call Me Naughty Lola” and “Charming Alarming Blonde Women”. In the interval the intrepid 3 artistes will sail the Atlantic Ocean (1st class on the RMS Queen Mary of course) and come out into the second half with all guns blazing amid the bright lights of Broadway, NYC. The trio then investigates how Broadway developed the idea of the

Berlin Cabaret with songs including “The Man That Got Away” and “Miss Otis Regrets”, plus a rousing finale with a selection from the hit Broadway Musical CABARET. Often funny, occasionally plaintive and vulnerable, the show is always engaging as we consider the fragility of the human condition through the medium of wonderful cabaret songs.” Everton Village Players supported by Notts Village Ventures are holding this fabulous cabaret on Friday 21st March at Everton Village Hall from 6.30 pm. Tickets at only £15.00 each are fantastic value, including a two course meal. There will be a licensed bar operating on the evening. For tickets call the Box Office on 01777 817275. T

A very interesting and tasty night was enjoyed thanks to SoHim Fong from King Asia Foods at our January meeting. SoHim prepared starters and main dishes of which we were all able to sample. I think a few of us will be trying out some of these recipes that he gave out too. As printed in the February Bawtry Today our next meeting in February was David Templeman talking about “Two Queens of Hardwick Hall”. March we have Sylvia Atkinson returning to tell us more about her “unexpected family history” New members are very welcome and we meet in Bawtry New Hall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.15pm for 7.30pm.
