the NOVEMBER 2013 edition
I’m going to spend this month saying No.’ I’ll call it November. - unknown
Having spent time to 2 Conventions since the last magazine, one at the ICC with 1300 business owners and another at a slightly smaller conference centre with over 100 other magazine publishers, I have had a really productive month, working on lots of new ideas. One of the things that I have learned however, is that I cannot do everything! To allow time for some of the things that are important to me, then there are times when I do need to say ‘no’ and not commit myself to things that distract me from what is really important to me. Sometimes we all need to say ‘no’ – but I promise I won’t do it too often! The December magazines will be delivered from 29th November and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 15th November. Try not to leave it until right up to the deadline though – the December magazine is always the most popular magazine of the year and demand for space will be great. T

Acoustic Saturday Music Nights Night Dancing
Second & Last Tuesdays. These two nights replace the Musicians Night & the Folk Night at the Scarbrough Arms and both nights are now the same. The second Tuesday however still includes an element of Folk with a sing-along.
The idea is to encourage a diverse range of musical styles at both evenings. There are no restrictions, so play acoustic guitar, any musical instrument and enjoy singing your favourite songs. These are open music sessions where new guests and everyone is welcome. The atmosphere is informal, friendly and ideal for pub musicians who like a relaxing night out. Examples of music are sixties,

Winter warmers at Wellington’s Café As the mercury drops we all turn to comfort food and Wellington’s at Cherry Lane Garden Centre have introduced a wholesome menu for the winter months with some festive fayre for the Christmas holidays. From a hearty cooked breakfast or piping hot soup followed by cottage pie the new café and bistro is already proving popular with more than just the customers for the garden centre itself. Owner Tom Vincent “we see MKexpanded 1-2 Page Ad_AW.pdf 1 a lot of mums meeting after
the school run, plenty of people using the WiFi on laptops and lots of groups of people meeting up for lunch or afternoon tea, it really is a big mix. The menu is about relatively simple food, cooked from fresh ingredients, we even pick our own fruit from trees in the garden, that really is locally sourced produce” With the festive season around the corner Wellington’s have also introduced a Christmas Menu that’s packed with traditional favourites and still leaves plenty of 09/10/2013 14:53 spend for presents “Christmas is a traditional holiday and we like to
uphold those traditions” continues Tom “it shouldn’t cost the earth to get together and celebrate and we like to keep our menu prices in line with the rest of the year” So as the wool coats and winter shoes make an appearance it’s a good time to pop down to Cherry Lane Garden Centre for something warming this winter. community Here at the Sanctuary we are becoming very concerned about the number of dogs being affected by the seasonal disease that is prevalent in most of our woods and forests at the moment. We cancelled our own sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest which was a big disappointment but obviously necessary as we did not want to be responsible for putting dogs in danger. Hopefully as the winter continues this problem will disappear and we will once again able to enjoy walking in the countryside with our beloved dogs. We were recently invited to the stables in Misterton to host a dog show which was very entertaining. It was a beautiful day and our hosts enjoyed showing everyone their dogs agility skills. We had a brilliant day and a big thank you to the stables and everyone that came along to support us. We are joining a Sponsored Santa Dash on the 8th December at Sandal Park in Doncaster. You can run, walk, jog whatever takes your fancy . It is £8 per person and they have family tickets available. You are even given a Santa outfit. This will be a wonderful fun morning and a good way to start the giving process of Christmas. The sight of hundreds of Santa’s doing their own thing around the park will be amazing. So why not come along and join us. Give us a call and we will give you the info you need. We will also be doing our usual street collection in Doncaster the week before Christmas so please come along and say hello. Can I also say a big thank you to Pets at Home in Doncaster, they are great supporters of our charity and we carry out collections there on a regular basis. Please come along and speak to us if you are considering adding a cat or dog to your family. We have the most pretty cats as well as dogs of every size and personality you could wish for. 16 16

And I came to Mayflower as my owner is very poorly, I came in with two little doggys but they have now found a home together. I am a very loyal boy and sometimes take a little time to get to know you but all it takes is a smile a treat and a nice back scratch!I would love a home that doesn’t mind my clumsiness and has a nice big fire for me to curl up in front of! I’m getting on a tad so I can’t really cope with long walks but still like to go out so an owner that can hold me, cause I’m a big lad but also doesn’t mind not walking miles with me would be perfect. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

Tenancy £££ Deposits
- don’t get caught out!
In the recent case of Superstrike -v-Rodrigues the court of Appeal gave a decision that could have wide reaching consequences for Landlords and Tenants.
Tenancy Deposits - don’t get caught out!
The case concerned a tenant’s deposit taken before the Tenancy Deposit Regulations came into force in April 2007 but where the fixed term ended after that date and the tenant remained. The court held that the periodic tenancy arising in these circumstances was a new tenancy so the Landlord should have protected the deposit and served the prescribed information. As a result the Landlord’s claim for possession failed.
We hope that the decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court to clear up the uncertainty about whether the case also affects deposits taken after April 2007. We can review your tenancy agreements and deposit arrangements to advise you on your options to make sure you are protected. For more information or to arrange an appointment.

Garden View
Winter Sun It was back in August this year when I was walking around Parc de La Tamarita, a beautiful green public space in Barcelona, when I stopped to rest from the heat and to look at a selection of ornately arranged planting beds. It occurred to me that although intensely beautiful, lush, calm and extremely relaxing, this garden had a distinct lack of something we try and cram our gardens full of back at home - flowers. In fact, in this garden there wasn’t a single one. It was a wonderful view that made me think to myself ‘must a garden have flowers in order to be beautiful?’
annual gardening events, but why is it we feel it necessary to pander to the needs of such a fussy lot (the flowers I mean, not the gardeners). The dead heading, staking, pruning, feeding and general titivating we have to do to keep our blooms in peak perfection is time consuming and expensive, but to some I know, a garden without flowers is like a bride and groom without a wedding cake. At this time of year it can be tricky to find a garden with flowers, and as we progress into winter we will find the quest increasingly difficult, which is why we rely on evergreens and the skeletons of structural shrubs within our gardens to provide colour.
Providing structure and form in key positions with elements such as clipped spheres, hedges and cones can look wonderful, and for those to whom these plants are a little too contrived, structure is provided by late flowering grasses such as Stipa gigantea and the wonderful upright group of Miscanthus ... both of course look wonderful when in flower too! T
I know the debate ‘must a garden contain plants to be a garden’ took place earlier this year at one of the
TOP TIPS Before the weather turns too cold don’t forget to..
Prune hybrid T Roses to about half their size. This will prevent wind-rock during the winter
Don’t forget to cover cabbages, broccoli and other brassicas with net if pigeons are a problem
Now is the perfect time to plant Tulip bulbs, but protect them from squirrels

Give a treat
TODAY
What do you like as a treat? A meal in a restaurant? A trip to the theatre? A weekend in the country? These can be pretty costly, but a treat need cost hardly anything – a bar of chocolate, a walk along the canal, a museum visit – but is just as appreciated.
Treats add colour to the mundane routine of life; they help us smile and to enjoy the journey. Of course, if we treat ourselves too often then we stop appreciating them as treats and start expecting
them as part of the routine. We have to get the balance right. Something even better than giving ourselves a treat is to give one to someone else. Again, they don’t need to be expensive, just thoughtful. My wife loves it if I pack a sandwich and a flask and then take her to Tickhill duck pond; though a night in a country house goes down well as well. And she knows that a classic car magazine will always make me smile. We in Bawtry Evangelical Church believe in the value of
MISSON & SPRINGS WI “Hands up, who can’t draw for toffee?” Almost everyone raised their hand in response to this question from our speaker at our meeting on 26th September. Barrie Hawkins came to try to persuade us that we could, by initiating us into some of the techniques needed to draw cartoons. Beginning by simply drawing faces to express various emotions, we ended up by drawing a short strip cartoon. The results were many and varied, but we all enjoyed the process and learnt something about Barrie’s own career and how drawing cartoons had provided much success along the way. The meeting on Wednesday 30th October is for members to sample favourite recipes which we have cooked. Do come along and enjoy the food and meet some new friends at the same time. treats and have had the joy of giving a couple for a few years now – 1) Tea Time Treats is a simple tea that we put on for retired folk on the last Sunday of the month in The New Hall. The “treat” part is that we always have a talk or activity that, we hope, is interesting and fun. We have room for more people to come along and enjoy the company and conversation; it is a joy for us to be able to treat as many as possible. 2) Operation Christmas Child consists of packing a shoebox with simple gifts which is then sent to a child that otherwise would receive no Christmas present. It is fun finding the gifts and fulfilling to know that it is so easy to give a child a Christmas. Again, we are always very happy to have more people join us in the giving of this treat. So, this month why not think of a special treat that you could give to someone? You will also know the reality of Jesus’ words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. If you would like to come along to Tea Time Treats or to give a shoebox, then please contact me on 0771 168645. Simon Carter T

Belshazzar’s Feast come
to Everton
Everton Village Players will be presenting another of their sell-out cabaret evenings on Friday 6th December, this time featuring top professional musicians and Best Duo Nominees in the 2010 BBC Folk Awards, Belshazzar’s Feast.
This is what Mike Harding had to say about them: “Paul Hutchinson and Paul Sartin play like no-one else you’ve ever heard. Their music is breathtaking and wickedly inventive and the between-tunes interchange as intelligent and hilarious as the music. But don’t let me give you the impression they’re a lightweight comedy act: they finish the set with a haunting piece of oboe and accordion magic which has the audience spellbound.” Belshazzar’s Feast start with traditional folk music, add a touch of classical and jazz, throw in a bit of pop and music hall, and top it off wry humour for
a unique live experience. Their latest Christmas album ‘Stocking Fillers’ (Unearthed) was released November 2012 and led to live sessions on Radio 4 and 6Music. 2014 will be their 20th anniversary year and will see the release of a new live album. Belshazzar’s Feast are coming directly from Liverpool Philharmonic Hall to Everton Village Hall to present a Christmas Show packed with a range of musical treats. It promises to be a fabulous evening of entertainment, including a two course sit-down meal. Belshazzar’s Feast are brought to you by Everton Village Players and Notts Village Ventures. Tickets at only £15.00 including meal, sell out very quickly, so book yours now. As usual a licensed bar will be available. Put the date in your diary: Friday 6th December at 7.30pm and call the Everton Village Players Box Office on 01777 817275 or go to the website at evertonvillageplayers.co.uk T

Rock Choir Rock Choir is the largest contemporary choir in the UK with over 16,000 members across the country and there is a thriving Rock Choir in Doncaster!
The choir is doing brilliantly and since starting in September 2011 with just a handful of members we have now approximately 60 members in total. But there must be more people who love music and who would really benefit from being part of Rock Choir. It is open to anyone of any age and ability who just loves music and singing. Members include teachers, solicitors, doctors and nurses through to students so it’s a brilliant way of bringing the community together through song. We meet once a week and learn songs ranging from Abba to Adele and we have so much fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and everyone just enjoys coming along and having a good old sing to blow the cobwebs away! We are currently running taster sessions every Monday at Hall Cross Lower School from 8pm – 9.30pm during term time for anyone interested in joining us.
