April 2013

welcome to the APRIL 2013 edition of Bawtry Today.

“Spring is the time of plans and projects.”

KEEP CALM

~ Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

A ‘Spring’ quote seemed appropriate this month, although at the time of writing the weather is anything but Spring like! Spring is a time of new life and new beginnings and a time when many of us look at home improvements, or make a start on garden projects. This month’s magazine is full or businesses and tradespeople who can help you with these projects. Whether it be a building project, a patio, new carpets, a greener lawn or a clean oven, whatever your springtime project there is sure to be someone featured who can help you. Don’t forget to tell them you found them in Today Publications when you contact them!

The next issue will be delivered from 27th April. This issue will include a ‘Good Food & Drink Section’ Anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Friday 12th April.

Best wishes, Paula x

TOP TIPS for finding your new home

Over recent years the changes in the housing market have made us start looking at our property as a home and not a cash cow. house hunters have become increasingly reliant on the internet as their primary port of call to see what the area has to offer. The internet is a fantastic tool, and there is no doubt that it should form part of a wider toolkit for buyers. Don’t underestimate the value of getting out there, getting to know an area and viewing potential homes. so here are your myplace team’s top tips to finding your next new home.

8

WorkSure

• Start by putting together your wish list and remember it is exactly that. Putting down all your requirements and why you need them in writing can help with the next step.... • Prioritise those must have items, to form your essentials list. Remember compromise is the name of the game without this you’ll be searching for the impossible. • Visit the area you’re thinking of moving to, get a feel for where the local shops, doctors and schools are.

if it’s an area that new to you then take the time to go there at different times of day. • Register your requirements with local agents. This way you will get to find out about properties before their listing appears elsewhere. • Don’t be afraid to go and view homes that reach your shortlist. it is only by going and seeing a property first hand that you will begin to get a sense of whether it’s right for you.

property • Give yourself a couple of wildcards, test what you think you want and; you might just be surprised at what you discover! • Go armed with a list of questions when viewing, don’t be afraid to engage in conversation with the seller and learn about the area, costs of running the home, the neighbourhood, how the house works for the current owner. • Take your time, yes you’re in someone’s home but remember this could be your next home don’t feel rushed or like your imposing. • Revisit your ‘must have’ list once you’ve viewed a property and take some time to think about how the home you’ve just seen compares. • Constructive feedback via the agent will be welcomed by the seller if the house is not for you. • Let your head take control over your heart if you’re thinking of booking a

2nd viewing then this essential visit is time to… • Take a realistic and practical look.. Ask yourself, will this work for your lifestyle, have your ‘must have’ criteria been met and if not can they be met over time, with changes and modifications to the property.

Garden View

CAN YOU DIG IT? Soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it? one of the most common ‘moans’ i get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but i’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now i realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. like all things in life, there are extremes. i (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, i’d recommend working with what you already have. i’ve only 14 BAWTRY TODAY

ever come across one soil type which i didn’t think possible to improve due to its shallow nature, so we just added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. if you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. it’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil ph. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. if you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs

of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house! T

Until next time, happy gardening,

Castalian Concert The birth of Tickhill Music Society in 1977 was introduced by a String Quartet and this format has been a firm staple on their programming ever since. The February concert this year carried on that tradition with a visit from the Castalian String

Tickhill Music Society Friday, 19th April 2013 at 8.00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Primary School, St. Mary’s Road, Tickhill.

Quartet. The name relates to the celebrated fountain in Greece, sacred to Apollo and the Muses with the power to inspire all who drink there; it is a fitting title for these talented players, all masters (and mistresses) of their instruments who blended into an integrated team with impressive ensemble playing. They began with early Schubert, written when he was only sixteen. It had a melodious first movement, a spirited Scherzo, a hymn-like Adagio and a jaunty last movement.

Beethoven’s opus 95 is the gateway to his monumental late quartets. The players attacked it with precision and zest, the whole piece being an integrated structure of powerful Beethovian architecture. Finally mendelssohn’s op 44 No. 2 was a judicious mixture of tuneful melody and brisk faster movements, notably the agitated scherzo and the final Presto a characteristic example of mendelssohn’s vigour. The outstanding Voglia d’Italia (the Italian Society for quality of this group’s South Yorks and North Notts) presents: performance was the “Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina”. David immaculate teamwork, lamb’s illustrated talk traces the life of one of no ragged edges and the greatest composers of sacred music, from total commitment. it is a his birthplace in the hill town of Palestrina to real treat to have music the three major basilicas in Rome where he making of such high served as a singer and composer. quality on our doorstep and a tribute to the choices Friday 5th April 2013 7.45pm, Tickhill Pavilion, made by the Concert Tickhill, DN11 9QN Admission: £3 secretary. New Healthier Fitter You Where did January and February go I hear you ask? Probably the same place as your New Year’s Resolution, Diet or plans for a new healthy fitter you. Over the coming months I aim to help us all shed a few extra lbs and help give you control of your weight, health & wellbeing. First things first, we need to accept that your health & Fitness is different to your weight management. of course they over lap but your health & Fitness level is controlled by your activity levels and your weight is most definitely controlled by your consumption! The first step of taking control of your weight is by understanding what

you’re putting in your body. i’m not on about complex carbohydrates or your daily amino acids; i’m talking about calories (Kcal’s). if a healthcare professional tells you should be eating 2000kcals a day do you have any idea what 2000kcals looks like in food and drink. Without knowing what you aiming for how do you expect to achieve your aim or goal? Pop into Bawtry health & Fitness studio any Tues or Thurs and i’ll be happy to work out what daily calorie total you should be aiming for.

Following Nhs guidelines i can guarantee 1-2 lb weight loss a week; equivalent to 4 stone a year! sounds good? imagine you at Christmas this year 4 stone lighter! so first top tip of the year, get to grips with what you are eating calorie wise; you might only be a chocolate chip cookie over your daily target or you might be 1000kcals over! MOTHER -in-laws? On Mothering Sunday last month in Bawtry Evangelical Church we talked about mothers-in-law. Now, before you groan anticipating cheap jibes such as comedians used for their staple material in the 1970’s, let me assure you that we thought very positively about them. We looked at a mother-in-law that appears in the Bible, a lady called Naomi, who proved wise, honest and inspirational in her relationship with her daughterin-law, Ruth. These two ladies found themselves as widows in a drought-stricken land but stuck together and each made sure that the other was taken care of and, more importantly, loved and valued. For the full tale read the book of Ruth in the Bible – it’s a great story, only a few pages long and is easily read while having a cup of coffee.

our society can be scathing/ insulting towards certain groups of people and it is easy to be swept along with the stereotypical, negative attitudes that seem to appear from nowhere. Prejudice is a horrible thing to live with, whether it is deliberately vicious or “only a joke”. No matter if the target be foreignborn, of a different colour to us, talk with a different accent to us, have an unglamorous hobby or any of the myriad other, ridiculous reasons people use to try and appear superior. one fantastic thing about Christian churches is that all are equally welcome, equally valued and equally blessed regardless of what comedians or anyone else might be tempted to say about them. even though Bawtry is in an area with limited exposure to people from different cultures 36 BAWTRY TODAY

yet in Bawtry evangelical Church we have regular attenders from no less than eight other countries and we have very strong links with people from three others – you will find a similar mix of people and cultures in many churches; and we are all much the richer for it; you should try one of our church meals – fantastic. so, while we know that les Dawson in fact enjoyed a close and joyful relationship with his mother-in-law; we would all do well to steer clear of anything approaching prejudice wherever it is found and see the

enrichment, joy and variety that people different to us can bring to our lives if we would but let them; after all the Bible does teach that all people are made in the image of God, not just those who look like me, talk like me and act me. You can thank heavens for that. T

Tickhill & Bawtry Probus Club It is with sadness that we have to record the death of Roland Weston, one of the founder members of our club. Poor health had prevented Roland taking an active part in Probus activities for some time but he is still remembered by many. We send our condolences to his family at this difficult time.

on a happier note we have been pleased to welcome several new members since January. We hope that they will all enjoy the fellowship which the club offers to retired professional and businessmen (we interpret these terms quite liberally!) if you feel you might like to join come along to a meeting as a guest and see for yourself. We meet at the millstone hotel at 10.00 for 10.30am on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. meetings end at about 12.00 Noon after which

many of us can be found in the bar and an increasing number stay for lunch. You’ll be very welcome. Our programme of talks for the next 3 months is as follows: 11th April. “Policing of Yesteryear” by G Fletcher. 25th April. “The sutton hoo Burials” by e houlder. 9th May. “Journey into space” by D. Newsletter Bawtry Town Council - April 2013

It seems that as of late, the council is having to defend itself from an internal source, who although quite rightly entitled to an opinion, would be best served if such opinion were factual. in a recent publication, once again inaccurate quotes were given. since the commencement of pay and display on the market hill, the traffic regulation order, has provided for a 24 hour charge period, and originally the contract was up until 2200 hours. it was commenced with an up to 1800 hours charge period, then moved to an up to 2000 hrs charge period, with an intention of reaching the up to 2200 hrs charge period. This format was originally discussed with a ‘working group’. A request for a ‘tick over tariff’ between the hours of 2200 to 0800 was also considered and implemented. The car park charges also remain some of the lowest in the area and have had one increase only since commencement nearly ten years ago. To state that the council does not have a retailer amongst them, could not be further from the truth now nor in the past. The council is made up of a diverse mix of knowledge and experience, and in majority a lot of local community spirit. Once again the Gainsborough Road toilets were mentioned and this topic was covered in the march edition of Bawtry Today. Christmas lights on lamp posts in January is also mentioned, but was this reported to the clerk to the council – no. There was no need, in any case, for action had been taken and once the inclement weather had settled the contractor carried out the request. A simple call to the clerk could have clarified this. The mention is then made to BRA (an independent organisation) and the town council’s 38 BAWTRY TODAY

concerns on “rules of engagement” rather than prosperity. Unlike some, the council has to follow laid down procedures and is governed by a code of conduct, this may not be ideal to some but nevertheless is fact. To breach the Code of Conduct for an example could be a criminal offence. The chair and vice chair are criticised for not contacting the member on ‘how we can work together’. The name of the game is that as a member of a council you are working together and arriving at majority decisions for the benefit of the whole parish not just a select part of it. No other member of the council is contacted by the chair or vice chair or given any special attention, which is how it should be. 13 members make up the council and should be working as a team, with the majority decision, reached by democracy prevailing. it could be felt by some, that the town council is formatted wrongly, and should have 13 business people serving on it, people not living in the

parish, not working in the parish, and not living within three miles of the parish. That i am afraid is a matter for government and local electorate (council tax payers). The article then refers to the ‘cosy club’, which is most offensive to other members of the council. elections for town/parish councils are held every four years, at which time all who qualify are entitled to seek election. The last election was may, 2011 when 11 people were elected, two people were co-opted and later that year due to a resignation, another co-option took place. Two of the co-options were business people. Between election years, vacancies are filled following a statutory procedure, this can be by co-option or 10 residents calling an election for the vacancy, the latter of which may have an overall cost effect, but is nevertheless, democracy. Two elections have been instigated recently at a total cost to the council tax payer of nearly

community £15k, this could be considered good value for money or not. For clarity, it is a procedural obligation, and democracy at work. so the alleged practice for over 30 years of a ‘cosy club’ is totally unfounded, for in that time there will have been at least 7 or 8 election years. if statistics over the years were to be compiled – perhaps the majority of co-options to the council have been from business people! Appreciation of some ‘good fellow councillors’ is a bonus in the article, but then the structure of the chair and vice-chair is criticised. (Protocol says Town mayor and Deputy Town mayor but chair and vice chair is perhaps more friendly). The claim is that for the past 12 years the chair and vice chair has been occupied by the same four people, who rotate every two years. once again fact would have been better – no position on the council rotates every two years, at the Annual Town Council meeting each year nominations are sought for the positions of chair and vice chair, for chairs of committee’s and representatives on other bodies. 13 members have a democratic vote and the positions are filled. healthy or not it is democratically decided. The final part of the article refers to pleading for Bawtry residents to attend council meetings on the second Tuesday of each month – the meetings are and always have been advertised and any resident is welcome to attend, business people also attend. The request also suggests “we all need to work together” and a suggestion is that perhaps some need to practice what they preach within the realms of democracy. Be assured, that Bawtry Town Councillors, elected by the electorate, in majority work for the benefit of Bawtry as a whole and not just specifics. None of the members are paid, claim expenses and work in the sole interest of the locality to the best of their ability. community During March we witnessed a good range of fantastic nights out in the company of talented musicians, playing to small audiences in small venues for very small entrance fees. Tickhill Music Society’s concert was a joy, with four young musicians- the Castalian Quartet who played work by 3 composers, one of which was Beethoven, a four movement piece was written for a small circle of connoisseurs and was never to be performed in public – just as well he didn’t bin this stunning work which was so modern in structure and sound – its hard to believe that it was written 203 years ago. i caught the Christopher P Wood’s painting exhibition in leeds. The show was a joy or colour and fantastical landscape. it is travelling to the Djanogly Gallery in Nottingham in July. Highly recommended. The Ukaranian Club in Doncaster have had more fun and varied gigs and for very little money – highlights were Karl Toth whose set began with superstitious – just his voice and acoustic guitar. Karl delivered a fantastic set, a young man with a rosey future. And at the Rock – folk for a fiver event the wonderful Roy machin and then the multi- instrumentalist trio Beggars Banquette, who have taken the stones song book and found their inner folkieness and delivered an amazing concert. They finished up with last Time which morphed into an irish jig. Catch them if you can – they are just beginning their tour.

Chatsworth is hosting a sculpture

exhibition by William Turnbull in its beautiful gardens until 30 June. he is a late 20th century sculptor whose work i find predictable and dull, but he was clearly very successful and well connected, as so much of it has been cast into bronze. Chatsworth gardens are always worth a visit and this work may add to the pleasure. Curated by Yorkshire sculpture Park. A more exciting exhibition – to my mind - is by emma Tennant, the 12th Duke of Devonshire’s sister and mother of the 1980s tall skinny punk fashion model -stella. emma is a painter and gardener and this exhibition brings these facets of her life together. www.chatsworth.org T

New Weight Watchers Meeting for Bawtry

NEW MEETING

MONDAY 8th APRIL 2013 5:45pm Bawtry New Hall Station Road

I joined my first Weight Watchers meeting 21 years ago after seeing a photo of myself, I suppose I was in denial really until I saw the photo. i was very nervous about going to the meeting as i was going on my own; i was made very welcome by the leader and helpers, and left the meeting with all the information i needed to get my weight loss to a good start. After my first week i lost 6 1/2 lbs and that was it i was hooked. i lost 3 stone in six months and i got to my goal. i enjoyed everything about Weight Watchers and my leader inspired me so much i decided that’s what i wanted to do. i became a Weight Watchers leader in February 1992, and i’m the longest running Weight Watchers leader in Doncaster, helping and supporting many members on their own weight loss journey.

Unfortunately while they were working away all week, their trailer was stolen from the drive of a bungalow in Broom Close, where the boys had been working. The wheel clamp and tow bar lock that were fitted to the trailer proved to be no deterrent for the thieves, who stole the trailer sometime during the night of the 12th/13th February. If anyone has any information that would help South Yorkshire Police to apprehend the culprits we would be very grateful if you could contact James Ellis of Arke Property Services on 07786 116104 or South Yorkshire Police.
