august already, and i hope that summer is still with us by the time you read this. What a fantastic July we have enjoyed, and what a difference it made to all the summer time events and end of term celebrations that could be enjoyed without the threat of rain. as i write this i am in the midst of sports days, school discos and end of term church services, a busy time for Mums as well as children!
The September issues will be delivered to you from 31st August, anything that you would like included should be with me by Saturday 3rd August. I know that this is very early, however, I would like to close the office and take some time off with my children this summer. They are growing up fast and there may be very few summers left where all 3 will have the luxury of the long school summer break, and I don’t want to look back and wish I had made more time to spend with them. So if you wish to submit something for inclusion in the September issues or to book any advertising space then you will need to get in touch straight away! Apologies if you are reading this a week or more after the initial distribution and have already missed the deadline.

community Hello everyone, what beautiful weather we are having at the moment, everyone looks so happy and smiley when the sun shines. However don’t forget animals get very stressed in this weather and need to be kept cool and in the shade when at all possible, also making sure they have access to lots of water. Not forgetting Never leave dogs or any animal in hot cars. You may think you are just going to be 10 minutes and your car in in the shade, but in that time the sun has moved and your beloved pet could have lost its life.

Could i say a big thank you to everyone that came to our scruffs dog show in tickhill. it was a huge success as usual and everyone had a terrific time. With your help we raised over £2000 which was amazing. Would anyone be interested in donating some time to help us with our garden at the sanctuary? maybe a retired person or someone with a few hours a week to spare? the hours would be flexible but some continuity would be appreciated. Please call us 01302 711330 if this appeals to you. (coffee, tea and maybe chocolate biscuits will be free)! T

Lulu was a stray taken in by a kind lady who found her trying to scavenge a meal from the bird table one cold frosty morning. Covered in ’sticky buds’ and with her beautiful fur horribly matted, Lulu was in quite a state. With most of the tangles groomed/cut out it was time to find her owner. When nobody came forward the lady decided to keep her but as she lived on a verY busy road, Lulu would have to be a housecat. Lulu was very unhappy about this as she longed to explore the garden so reluctantly here she is looking for a new home. Lulu loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss!

Arts Review & what’s going on - AUGUst 2013
Whats on: i have already told you about Christopher P Wood’s exhibition at the djanogly art Gallery in Nottingham, in the adjacent gallery is an exhibition by david Measures from 12 July to 26 august and a parallel show at rufford Craft Centre from 4 august to 8 september. David tragically died almost 2 years ago from Cancer, he was a lecturer of mine on the Fine Art course at trent Poly in Nottingham. one of the nicest of men, and as an artist quite revolutionary in his pursuit of the study of the natural world, most notably butterflies and after he retired he went weekly to Cresbrookdale in Derbyshire to draw. As a lecturer he used to load up the minibus and drive us out to the countryside to draw in the depths of winter or at the coalface at Gedling Pit, or rehearsing orchestras in the concert hall in Nottingham. i am proud to have counted him as a friend. his work is wonderful and i would urge you all to go and visit one of these shows and reap some of his enjoyment of being out in a field, completely absorbed whilst observing what is around you. www. lakesidearts.org.uk . T Picture: by Jonny White at Doncaster museum – Canoodling Gnus!
if you watched Professor alice roberts’ Horizon program (BBC2) in early July - What Makes Us Human – you would have grasped the main conclusion amongst all the heavy science and rather soft and slightly soppy delivery of the happily pregnant doctor of anatomy. The thrust of the argument of what makes us Human is culture, our ability to cooperate and to create culture. so dear humans, here is some of what’s out there locally for you.
doncaster art Gallery and Museum Another exhibition by an old chum of mine, a very different show entitled Beastly Machines: Kinetic sculptures by Jonny White 6 July to 7 september. many of you will be familiar with the large cutlery sculpture of Jonny’s at the millennium Gallery in sheffield. in this exhibition the sculptures use the latest microprocessing technology to create moving animals. Also don’t miss the Art workshops at Cusworth hall as detailed in last month’s Arts review www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums. T an outdoor sculpture exhibition near southwell at reg Taylors in Normanton, called sculpture in the (swan) sanctuary 60 artists with 150 original works of sculpture. there must be something in there that you will like – plenty to discuss! 27 July to 8 september www. sculptureinthesanctuary.co.uk garden plants and pots etc for sale and café for sustenance. T The Hepworth in Wakefield has a painting show by William scott until 29 september – this is a centenary exhibition of the painters work- he
is best known for his still life work. www.hepworthwakefield.org.uk . T Harley gallery making and Drawing and Drawing and Pots until 11 August and About Face from 21 August a two person exhibition by George hardy and Yelena Popova www.harleygallery.co.uk . T The rock at the Wesley centre in Maltby will be on summer recess throughout August. T shakespeare at Hodstock Priory – Twelfth Night performed by the handleBards – 4 men, 4 bikes, 40 characters (?) and a 926 mile tour, inspired by the summer olympics last year this theatre company are getting on their bikes and travelling from Glasgow to london carrying with them all the necessary set, props and costume to perform this most well known of shakespeare’s plays. Well that’s spare underpants and a toothbrush, a bottle of water and some sandwiches, no room for anything more…31 July to 1 august at 7pm – bring a picnic from 6pm tickets £12 / £8/ £2 for school age children www.hodstockpriory.com/ buy-tickets T

Calling all Doncaster’s Musical Youth artist Janet Wood is on a mission to bring together doncaster’s musical youth in a brand new choir which will perform alongside other youth choirs in sheffield and Barnsley in a regional celebration of young voices.
it will be a choir with a difference. We want young people aged 11-19 to spend time in the gallery at the Point and use the visual art on display as inspiration for writing new songs and lyrics. Janet explains more: “this is a musical adventure driven by the young people themselves. the benefits of singing have been well documented. it’s a great way to express creativity and meet new friends. it’s also loads of fun and just makes you feel good!” Using visual arts to inspire choirs is all the rage this summer. the National Portrait Gallery has just announced its new choir, and we hope that by 2014 the Yorkshire version will see 90 young people sharing their own words and music at a high profile regional arts venue. We’re running free taster sessions in the summer holidays for anyone aged 11-19 who wants to come along and give singing and songwriting a try. You never know we might find the next louis tomlinson, lesley Garrett or tony Christie! singing in the Gallery Free Taster session info: Wednesday 31st July 2-3pm Wednesday 14th august 2.-3pm To book your place please call 01302 341662, email darts@thepoint.org.uk check our website www.thepoint.org. uk/get-involved or pop into The Point for a chat. 12 12

Garden View
Designer Gardens it is estimated that just 3% of the UK population employ a professional garden designer, with most people opting to design their own outdoor space, or adapt one they may have inherited. the first decision to make when starting a plan is whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. By this i mean do you like a structured garden with big sweeping curves and strong lines, formality and symmetry, or do you prefer a more informal space that looks like it ‘just happened’, almost by mistake, (these are much harder to achieve as you are often trying to recreate something nature does best). there was an industry debate recently which explored the idea of modern gardens being ‘over designed’. Just like in clothing fashion, there’s a revival of a certain era every so often, and it’s the same with design outdoors. once up on a time, formal terraces were all the rage with pretty-coloured bedding schemes and clipped hedging. then, decades later, these were dug up and replaced
with sweeping natural ‘landscapes’ , where trees and lakes were carefully located to make them appear as though they had always been there. Which is right? Well, neither, it’s personal taste and as long as it fits with the house style and surrounding landscape, i think you should do what makes you happy. After all, that’s what gardens are for, to be enjoyed. once you’ve decided on a style, take some measurements of the boundaries, starting with the house. Use circles, curves, squares and rectangles to make some nice shapes on the plan, then choose a material to fill them in with. Usually the largest space will be the lawn, then patio or deck, and pathways, then fill the gaps with plants. Next month is the perfect time to plant, so we’ll be looking at planting plans in detail then. in 2008/2009, laws were introduced
TOP TIPS
Jobs to do this month include:
14 14
Keep things simple. Don’t over complicate the basic design layout Use pergolas to add height and shade Consider hedges instead of fencing to add structure bawtry TODAY
make space for at least one small tree Consider the maintenance of the new garden - decking and gravel are cheap, but require more maintenance in the long term
regarding things like changing levels in your garden, such as only being allowed to raise decking by 30cm above ground level, any higher would require a protective rail or balustrade; and also the consideration of sustainable ways to manage water, and where possible retaining it within the garden. so, before planning any major works to your garden, check with your local planning department that you don’t need permission
Until next time, happy gardening,
Lee...

Austerfield Study Centre NEWS
What's the problem? The old Primary School in Austerfield was built in 1882 and when DMBC acquired it in 1973, was established as an environmental education centre. Over the years it developed its capacity to take over 10,000 children a year in its hey day, employing 6 people. Sadly staff have been reduced over the last year and now, with cut backs, it is closing its doors. Once it goes, it will be very difficult to re-open.
What does it do? Teachers book their classes into the centre and choose one of the many activities which enrich children’s National Curriculum learning in science, geography, history, physical and social development. They either come for a day or use the bunk bed dormitories and tents for overnight(s) visits. For some children this is their first and possibly only experience in the natural environment. Children have safe use of woodlands, ponds to dip, and heathlands to explore on the adjacent Mosaic Reserve. I meet adults who recall happy memories of trips to Austerfield, especially those ‘staying away from home’ magic moment memories.
th
The 40 Anniversary Celebration It took place on Saturday 22nd June to raise awareness. £623 was raised. It was organised by the social enterprise voluntary group. Help to make this a success came from local volunteers and Thorne Sea Cadets. Many local businesses were involved from sponsorship to raffle prize donation including:The Co-op, Bawtry Paint Balling, Bawtry Golf Club, The Mayflower, Adam & Eve, The Town House Pantry, Bawtry Bonbons, Percy's, Bawtry Flowers. A massive thanks to all involved. 40 candles blown out and happy birthday sung to the centre
What's Happening? A social enterprise, set up by the local community, is looking into the feasibility of securing its future. They hope not only to continue to offer environmental education to children, but also become a village community centre, something Austerfield lacks at the moment. DMBC have extended it’s support until July, giving more time to allow this to happen.
Now the real hard work starts. Talks with DMBC continue, a not for profit company has been registered and work now revolves around ensuring the sustainability of the project, securing funding and importantly, gathering support from the wider community.
Tony Sutton of Austerfield rode his bike 163 miles in 10 hours to raise money for the centre. He has so far raised £485. Late Sponsors can still be offered via the link at the bottom of this page until the end of September.
THANK YOU For all your support

Epworth & District Agricultural Show Celebrates 67 Years
Country traditions and heritage are celebrated in August in Lincolnshire Taking place on Monday 26th august on epworth show Field, the event will once again be celebrating all that is great about our rich country heritage. the one day event is packed full of attractions and competitions for everyone to take part in, as well as a beer tent with a range of real ales and ciders, and plenty of variety in cuisine with the many food stalls and also trade stands so you can even do a bit of shopping. Keeping agriculture at the heart of the show, there will be livestock and equine competitions, vintage tractors and cars, a horticultural tent, dog shows, and an animal enclosure for you to get up close and personal. there will also be live music and entertainment throughout the day with the worldfamous titan the robot, Britain’s Got talent Gary magic, and up and coming artist rita Payne. “Despite the awful summer weather we had last year, there was another great turn out for the show with a great line-up,” says Dave hayes, Chairman of the epworth ad District Agricultural society. “We were extremely proud that we didn’t have to cancel the show with the poor weather. thankfully we managed to keep on top of the conditions of the show field and kept the show open which is important to our regional agricultural industry.” “With all the celebrations the country saw last year, this year is a little quiet, but we are sure 20 20

We are a small school set in a rural location serving the villages of Mattersey and Mattersey Thorpe, just outside retford. our on-site preschool, Mattersey Preschool, offer places for children from the age of two. Government funded places are available, which enable 2,3 and 4 year olds to access up to 15 hours of childcare. We have developed an excellent relationship between the two settings which enables smooth transition into main school. Children can attend mattersey Primary from the september after their fourth birthday. Places are available in all year groups throughout the school. our school forms a focal point within the local community and we have many community links, including ongoing projects with mattersey Archaeological Project (mAP), Blue skies and other community organisations. our dedicated staff work hard to ensure that our school provides a safe and friendly environment in which children can learn and develop. small numbers on roll allow us to deliver a highly personalised learning experience which meets the needs of the individual, while at the same time, encouraging independence and confidence. high expectations ensure that our pupils aim to reach 28 28
bawtry TODAY
their highest potential and to aspire to make a positive contribution to society. over the last year we have seen huge changes to both our indoor and outdoor environments, with the development of our allotment area and outdoor gardens. our outdoor classroom is currently under construction and our latest project is to develop our library facilities to include a section for the local community. We are always looking for ways to improve our teaching and learning experiences and are introducing some of the latest computer/ hand held tablet equipment. We offer extended provision with a breakfast club from 8am and an after school club which runs to 6pm. holiday club is also available during the school holidays. A range of extra-curricular activities are on offer, from gardening to football to art, enabling children to learn a wide range of skills. During our last ofsted inspection (march 2012), we were graded as ‘Good’ overall and it was commented that ‘Pupils show strong support and commitment towards each other. Pupils talk very positively about how well they get on together and the lack of bullying……one of the school’s major strengths is its support in providing services for parents, pupils and the wider community. A wellplanned curriculum provides good opportunities
for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. extracts from the conclusion of the report were: “Children enjoy their time at this welcoming and stimulating setting. they are happy and settled and demonstrate a strong sense of belonging within the security of the setting.” “Children are valued and their individuality respected.”, “Children are happy and settled and have formed good relationships with each other and staff. they are helping them to feel good about themselves because staff frequently provide support, praise and encouragement, while managing their behaviour well.’ our setting aims to: • provide high quality care and education for children below and at statutory school age; • work in partnership with parents to help children to learn and develop; • add to the life and well-being of the local community; and • offer children and their parents a service that promotes equality and values diversity. Motoring
Bentley Mulsanne By Tim Barnes-Clay Cars oNLY get you from a to B, right? Wrong. some are masterpieces of engineering that go far beyond the original purpose of a motor vehicle. You only have to visit a major automotive show to see how many people flock to glimpse the cars of now and the concepts of tomorrow. Cars enable us to be free; they take us places – discreetly, blandly or boldly, depending on the sort of car they are – and the image the marketing men have created around them. Bentley needs no introduction; it’s one of the world’s ultimate luxury brands. it’s not just marketing spin either; the facts speak for themselves – over 80% of Bentleys are still on the roads today. that says something about the legendary build quality of the car. A recent visit to its famous factory in Crewe gave me an deeper insight into why the make is so jaw-droppingly marvellous. the crème de le crème is the mulsanne. so, strangely enough, that’s the car i concentrated on during my visit. i wasn’t interested in asking questions about fuel economy and other running-costs – after all they‘ll be at the bottom of your list of queries if you’re in the market for a vehicle with the same price-tag as a four bedroom new-build in suburbia. the boys at Bentley obviously care deeply about the mulsanne transporting you in the most glorious style possible, preferably with a chauffeur at the wheel. And why not? After all, it’s a mammoth motorized status symbol – a message to humanity that you‘re incalculably wealthy, and a person with fine taste. inside, the aroma of leather and wood shrouds you instantly. And there’s a reason 32 32
bawtry TODAY
for this: over 170 hours – that’s almost half the entire assembly process – goes into fashioning the cabin of the mulsanne. each steering wheel can take 15 hours to handstitch while stainless steel brightware twinkles perfectly, thanks to an exhaustive 10 hour finishing process. the wood veneer takes five weeks to turn from a rough root ball into a full set of mirror-matched, fine-polished leaves – and a time-honoured tanning process is even used for the leather; this is what gives off the heavy, worn bouquet that is so reminiscent of vintage Bentleys. the entire passenger area is also enclosed within a ‘ring of wood’ waist rail with an uninterrupted panel of timber gracing the mulsanne’s dashboard. inverted dial needles within the instrument cluster are suggestive of early Bentleys, while the whole console design is a clever nod to the Bentley wings motif. in the midst of all the wondrous wood and luxuriant leather, you also start to respect how the most up-to-date in-car technologies have been discreetly placed within the opulent interior. the upper dashboard houses a multimedia screen, placed tastefully behind an electrically operated veneered flap, while below sits a leather-lined media player contents drawer with connectors for iPod, UsB and more. After swapping seats with the chauffeur, who’d driven me legally on the roads of england, it was time to experience the car in a different setting. We’d travelled all the way to Anglesey race Circuit and i wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to see what this beast could do without the threat of blue lights. i discovered the mulsanne guarantees vast clout at low revs, while maintaining high levels of poise at any speed. Dab the accelerator and you’re immediately rewarded
with outstanding acceleration. 0-62mph arrives in just 5.3 seconds and the unrestricted engine will propel you to 184mph. the car is also stacked with intelligent safety equipment that learns how you drive. this means, even if you try and switch every gadget off on track, the car will stick to the twisty bits with hardly any tail waggle at all. Put bluntly, the mulsanne is as near to flawlessness as you can get. so, if you can splash the cash – why wouldn’t you want to absorb all of Bentley’s past and present, wrapped up in its crowning glory? the mulsanne is not just a car – it’s an investment in British history, culture and craftsmanship – and when the moment takes you, power and prowess.

Cemetery Complaints have been received and action taken regarding the standard of grass cutting. We are aware that on some occasions grass can be left on monuments, and our contractor has been requested to clear grass from such. Compared to the standard of maintenance in some church yards today the general condition of our cemetery is good. T

community after not attending any last year, sharon & i get to go to three weddings over the next few months. Weddings are great, aren’t they? everyone is happy, you catch up with folk you haven’t seen in a while and there is always plenty of first class food. then there’s the traditional element; normally the bride wears a beautiful long white dress, the groom puts on a fancy suit and silk tie, there are the photos, the formal toasts and funny speeches, the tossing of the bouquet, the cutting of the cake and the driving away in a “modified” car. No matter how many weddings you’ve attended; these elements are always present and they are all valuable parts of the day, even though the actual legal part only takes two minutes. even these days when the common practice is for people to live together for years, a wedding is still valued and most
The Commitment of Marriage teenage girls long for the day when it’s their turn. the average wedding day in the UK costs £18,244 so while many don’t hold anything back in their relationship until they are married, while most couples already have gadget and furniture-filled homes; nevertheless, we all still celebrate the determination of one man and one woman to remain faithful and committed to each other “til death us do part” and push the boat out to do so. the best weddings of all are Church ones – where God is the reason and the centre of the marriage; where the couple state their complete dependency on God to be the husband or wife they should be. Where the couple embark on their decades together determined to show their
spouse the grace, dignity and mercy that God has shown them. the Bible says “a cord of three strands is not easily broken” and that gives us confidence that we don’t have to enter marriage alone. Given that 42% of marriages end in divorce (would you go in a plane that only has a 58% chance of arriving safely?), there is something very special about getting married, something that God put in the heart of every human being; a lifelong, exclusive, intimate commitment that only a married couple can know. And therefore i am looking forward to this year’s weddings more than ever.
