welcome to the MAY 2013 edition of Bawtry Today.
‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’ English proverb
The origin of this saying dates back to the 18th century, its meanings however are less clear. The first part means simply ‘don’t discard your winter clothing’ but ‘till May be out’ has more than one interpretation! Some think it refers to the month of May, others believe it is the May blossom of the Hawthorne that we need to wait for. Which ever version you prefer there haven’t been many opportunities to discard winter coats yet this year, and I for one hope that May will bring with it the promise of warmer weather.
The June issue will be with you around the time of the Bank Holiday at the end of May, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 10th May quite early this month due to the way the weeks fall, so don’t miss out.
Best wishes, Paula x

New Healthier Fitter You Hi Folks! Last month i talked about taking control of your calorie intake and the importance of eating Breakfast! this month i am going to start by talking about metabolism. You want your metabolic rate to be working with you, not against you. You ideally want your metabolic rate in the highest gear possible so it burns as much energy as possible meaning your body holds less body fat and burns through the body fat you already have. let’s use an ideal scenario to give a clear picture. once awake you should be having breakfast to kick start your metabolism and get your engine
going. You want a nice white hot furnace before you start your day. once your day has begun you should be eating small and often. A small well balanced meal (not snack) every 3-4 hours will keep your metabolism white hot and enable your body to continue burning body fat. Without calories in your stomach you reduce your body’s ability to burn body fat stores. it’s a bit like you cannot burn a candle without oxygen, well your body NeeDs calories in order
to burn body fat. hence if you miss BreAKFAst or lUNCh you are slowing down your metabolic rate and risk gaining weight when you snack or over consume later that day (and you will). hopefully by now you are eating breakfast daily and making breakfast, lunch and your evening meal important parts of your daily routine. What about exercise i hear you runners shout?! T
EXERCISE
The truth is you can control your weight without exercise, it is just so much easier with physical activity than without it. if you are eating the correct amount of calories in small, well balanced meals then great but if you are not and you are just missing meals in an attempt to lose weight then physical activity is KeY to drive your weight loss. When you undertake exercise of any form your body will recover afterwards and most importantly it compensates. 16 16

Garden View
if you’re reading this you probably have an interest in gardening, but even armchair gardeners must be happy that spring is now well under way. May brings with it a wonderful selection of flowers, mainly in cool blues, purples, pinks and whites, and some great fragrances too, including the heady scent of Lilac. it’s an old fashioned shrub which has fallen out of favour, and for the majority of the year it looks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bush smells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze. Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mown grass and you have the most perfect spring fragrance, better than any air-freshener. After a long winter with more snow than i can ever remember, and yet more depressing news about our economy, i think what we all need is to enjoy a little nostalgia; i’m not talking bunting here, but bedding plants. towards the end of the month is the time when bedding plants and other tender perennials can be planted outside. thousands of people will flock to garden centres up and down the country over the coming weeks, and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the year to the outdoor retail world. it’s an opportunity for the nurseryman (or woman) to display
A jar of nostalgia row after row of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray by tray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop. each standing to attention, faces held high, their label pointing forwards and each doing their utmost to shout “buy me, buy me”. the flowers shine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiled fruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bi coloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of blackberry and raspberry jellies? Choosing your colour scheme for this year’s bedding display (be that just the one hanging basket or a front garden that looks like a victorian public park) is exciting, and a totally personal task. i’ve know it can cause arguments between couples, but have also known marriages which have survived successfully on the basis that “you plant your side and i’ll plant mine”. there are those who like a multi coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed tray of Petunias for example), those who prefer to stick to a muted pallet of 2-3 ‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue and white) and then those trying to achieve a swiss

But whatever your preference i don’t think it really matters, because buying annual bedding plants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’s good for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant for passersby to enjoy, and most importantly great at making you feel happy at home. Popular canal side coffee shop to re-open May 1st will be a special day in shireoaks. The pretty village near Worksop will get its Coffee shop back. right by the bridge over the Chesterfield Canal, Nona’s was a very popular stopover for walkers and cyclists as well as a meeting place for local people. then in June 2011, the owner, moved the business to the brand new hollingwood hub on the canal near Chesterfield. this has proved a great success and is a very popular venue.
May Queen celebrations 2013 Gringley May Queen 2013 organised by Gringley summer activities with performances by Breakthrough Kids.
the Gringley may Queen celebrations will be held on sunday 5th may. it will commence at 11.00am at st Peter’s C of e Primary school, mill road, Gringley on the hill. here we will have performances by Breakthrough Kids and the crowning of the may Queen Ceremony. refreshments and craft activities are also available at a small charge and the profits from these will go to Gringley summer Activities. From here we will parade around the village departing at approximately 12.30pm, it would be great if the children could come in fancy dress and there will be prizes for the best. We will arrive at the Blue Bell pub from 1.30pm where there will be a bouncy castle and food available. 22 22

on the very first day of opening in the new premises, laura elliott was taken on as an apprentice. she learnt about baking, customer service, book keeping etc. she rapidly earned a positive reputation amongst the customers for her happy, welcoming manner. she passed her NvQ from Chesterfield College in record time. laura feels that the time is now right to start her own business, so she has taken over the lease at the original Nona’s back in shireoaks. she is presently working hard to decorate the premises, get new furniture and spruce it up ready for the grand opening on may Day. this is proving a bit hectic because she is still working at the hollingwood Nona’s until 21st April. laura will start off with a similar menu to the tried and tested one. everything is homemade; there will be drinks, sandwiches, light meals, ice creams and of course a selection of cakes to die for. in addition, there will be a supply of information about the canal supplied by the Chesterfield Canal trust. Kath Auton, membership secretary for the trust, said “We all wish laura the very best of luck. she is a very special young lady. Whilst she will be sorely missed at hollingwood, i have no doubt that the people of shireoaks will very quickly take her into their hearts.”. T

Advice on CCJs
from Jones & Co
James Murray of Jones & Co gives advice on County Court Judgments & how to avoid damaging your credit rating.
A CCJ is a judgment that a county court issues when someone has failed to pay money that they owe. CCJs are a simple way for creditors to claim the money they’re entitled to. The Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines records CCJs for 6 years. Banks and other lenders can do a CCJ check against the CCJ register when deciding whether to offer credit. Getting a mortgage or loan with a CCJ is difficult. Even if you get credit, you may end up paying a higher interest rate. The moral of the story is to react quickly to a judgment entered against you and be realistic about your chances of successfully setting it aside within 1 month when deciding whether or not to pay it.
For more information or to arrange an appointment
Nearly all CCJs go on the register.
Please contact:
james.murray@ jonessolicitors.co.uk • Never pay it: If you don’t pay it, it’s shown as unsatisfied.
• Remove the CCJ: The only way to remove a CCJ is to ask the court to set aside the judgment because you have a genuine reason to dispute • Pay in full within 1 month of the judgment: it. Be careful though – if your application to set The CCJ will be removed from the register aside is unsuccessful and is heard more than 1 month after the date of the judgment it will show • Pay in full after 1 month of the judgment: up on the register even if you subsequently pay The CCJ stays on the register but it will be it in full; the 1 month runs from the date of the recorded as ‘satisfied’. judgment, not the date of the hearing.

community Hello everyone, this has been another really busy month for us with a heavy influx of cats and dogs, but fortunately it has also been busy with people adopting our residents. Before anyone takes one of our dogs home they attend a saturday morning induction meeting which usually lasts for about an hour and a half. This enables everyone to ask as many questions as they have time for and is especially helpful to new dog owners. our dog listeners are very knowledgeable and do a great job of making a new dog owners life a little easier. i know i ask every month but we are really desperate for dog walkers. Come on everyone i am sure there are lots of people out there wanting to get fit and help a charity at the same time. We do what we can regarding fund raising and there are still tickets left for our latest fund raiser Wild West night at Ye old Belle at Barnby moor on the 8th June. tickets are £20 includes supper disco and a live band, Also raffle and prize for best dressed, we need to make this evening a success as the money we hope to raise will help to keep our dogs and cats well fed and watered. if anyone has any time on their hands and would like to involve themselves in fundraising please let us know, we always need help especially at our July dog show and sponsored dog walk at the end of the year. so please call us it anyone would like to become involved just call us on 01302 711330 or 07969 203206

community The year commenced with one member short due to the resignation of andy West due to work commitments. This vacancy was filled following an election on the 3rd May, 2012 by Peter Holland. august 2012 saw the resignation of Kate sleight, for the same reasons, and again following an election in october, the vacancy was filled by John Walsh. The council is currently made up of 12 elected members and 1 co-opted member (who happens to be from the business community). During the course of the year the town council has given observations on approximately 39 planning applications (which is greatly reduced on previous years) to DmBC who are the planning authority/ decision makers. T observations have also been made to dMBC as the licensing authority on a number of licensing applications, following concerns from residents but the town council is not the decision maker or a statutory consultee. The town councils position on licensing is not one against business but more to do with saturation point – and to attempt to protect the residents who live in and around the areas. a triage group was formed but no progress has been made on the topic. T one part of DmBC’s cuts thankfully, is thriving and has been supported by the Council & others from the outset, and that is true community involvement. this being Bawtry Community library. the New hall (A council asset – but leased to a charitable management committee) also continues in its 31st year to provide facilities for the local community and beyond. B.A.r.s. (a registered charity) also continues to maintain play equipment on Wharf street play area and organise an annual sports day (with support from the town council). they are now progressing to a million pound plus project at the memorial sports Field, to which the town council has ring-fenced £53k and support for the future. make observations/requests in the interest of the parish. one such request was further pursued and although perhaps not an ideal solution, nevertheless is perhaps better for pedestrian safety. That is the change on Tickhill road from north to south side parking and restrictions at the Pemberton ings junction. another success was the local control of the Gainsborough road Toilets. initially there was a capital expend to create a pay facility, and contract cleaning but this has now been brought in-house at a greatly reduced cost. despite recent attacks on the town council – the facility was re-opened on a petitioned request by the business community. T other areas in which the town council continues to bring pressure – so far without result – are the verge on south Parade, a one Way system for top street, a pedestrian crossing near to the Post office, station road, reduced speed limits and residents parking to name a few. T to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee a plaque was placed on the
wall of the Pinfold and Jubilee medals were presented to the pupils at the mayflower Primary school. A jubilee sports day was also organised by BArs and was well attended. T
The Memorial sports Field is used by senior and Junior Cricket, senior and Junior Football and Bawtry Bowling Club, who in majority assist the council in keeping costs down by carrying out a lot of maintenance work themselves, with some council support. The council is very appreciative of the voluntary help from the clubs. T the Allotments continue to be well used and a waiting list is still in place for new users. For the 2013/14 financial year a slight increase in rent has been approved but even with this prices, equate to 69p and 39p per week per full/half plot. the council thanks John Brouard who annually collects the rents on behalf of the council and assists with some maintenance work free of charge. community forgotten by some of those surrounding it, is the Market Hill, it is perhaps controversial with some, but the council has looked after the local council tax payers interest for the past 10 years, and during such time has been fortunate in not having to levy any increase in the local precept currently standing at £26k during that time. The original intention was to charge until 10pm of an evening and following discussion this was first initiated up to 6pm, then after discussion to 8pm with an intention to a move to 10pm. The move to 10pm was sanctioned in May of 2012, with an implementation date of 1st November, 2012 and at the same time, following a request from a business, a tick over tariff was also introduced. during the 10 year period the tariff charges, above the half hour local tariff, have only increased once and only very slightly and are still some of the cheapest in the area. The upkeep of the Market Hill is met from council funds. T the Christmas eve carols around the tree was once again, very well attended. the Window Dressing competition was again won by Womack’s and several businesses got involved. excel Parking services presented the shield and certificates to runners up. T of late the Council is having to defend itself from within, which is not an ideal situation. Nevertheless, being a councillor is more than attending meetings, it is representing the resident’s primarily (from whom we get some of our money) and the businesses in a fair manner and in the interests of the community as a whole not just those who ‘shout the loudest’ or particular sectors. We are not a ‘cosy club’ and never have been, we follow democratic laid down procedures in all that we do and are and always have been Non-political. The name of the game is to ‘work together’ in the interest of the parish in totality something we as a council, in majority, are striving to do and we hope for the future others can also. T

community We have just had a day out in Much Wenlock, the small shropshire town, similar in many ways to Tickhill, and with its own poetry festival, now in its 3rd year, with Carol ann duffy (poet laureate) as its patron. The highlight of our trip was not the poetry or the performances we saw, but the general activity in the town, of people getting together to enjoy events and discuss the relative merits of what they had seen. The town was very busy (many, presumably like us from elsewhere), the tea- shops and pubs were heaving and business was brisk. This is what lies ahead for us with the first T- Fest now looming in september. at Much Wenlock we paid proper ticket money for one evening event, more than the ticket price for a whole days worth of activities at T Fest, which is promising to be Yorkshire good value. Cast in Doncaster will be opening its doors soon, the new performance venue on sir Nigel Gresley square. it’s called CAst as it is at the heart of Don-CAst-er….and punning aside, a new cultural venue in Doncaster is a welcome thing and with the opening of its doors i very much hope that there will be some exciting and innovative, difficult and demanding work shown in the town. Misson & Springs WI P3 & P4 helped the March meeting of Misson & springs Wi along. For those not in the know, this was the supper of pie and peas (of course!) which followed the business part of our evening. We welcomed Joan and sandy from the south Yorkshire Federation, who conducted our aGM and oversaw the re-election of the President, Joanna Phillips and the committee who will continue for another year. The members voted in favour of the resolution which will go forward to the national aGM in June, and we are sure that everyone in Bawtry will be delighted that it is in support of local high streets. the hieroglyphics at the start of this article refer to one of the quizzes which tested our love and knowledge of food, as we ate our pie and peas and liz rowe’s delicious sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Flowers will be our theme on Wednesday 24th April when James Wood will talk about his family’s long involvement in floristry, and demonstrate some of his many skills in floral display. We shall be delighted if you can join us at the Community Centre, vicar lane in misson at 7.30pm. For further details, don’t hesitate to contact Joanna Phillips on 07747 443374. T 42 42
