Welcome ‘‘

HALLOWEEN 2013

to the OCTOBER 2013

edition of Bawtry Today

As October arrives, I usually have to consider putting away my sandals and pulling on my winter boots. My problem this year, is that I threw away more than one pair of very old boots at the first signs of Spring – my way of ensuring that I would definitely have new ones this year, but now that means I am going to have to make a rare shopping trip and a successful one at that, before ~ Albert Camus I can wear boots this year, and I am beginning to regret that now! I have a feeling that my winter coat situation may be similar – I must learn not to be so ruthless during my spring clearouts! I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there are just 2 more magazines before Christmas now! So if you need to communicate details of Christmas events, or get your Christmas advertising campaign underway then now is the time to contact me. The November magazines will be delivered from 25th October and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 11th October.

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a fl ower.

KEL ELLIOT IN CONCERT Kel is

a singer songwriter with the unusual distinction of being a double bass player. her songs are upbeat, lyrically optimistic and musically infectious. A sassy jazz singer, Kel’s performances are packed with humour, irony and a touch of mischief, with songs representing a modern approach to jazz and blues , drawing on influences as diverse at ella Fitzgerald and Bonnie rait. her band comprises guitar, keyboard and percussion - i have seen this band and highly recommend it to you… they are brilliant. £8.50 adult £4 child.

community Earlier this year research found that food prices are rising four times faster than the average person’s income* and families are finding it more and more difficult to eat healthily on a budget. But a local expert on healthy eating says it’s possible to trim your shopping bills and your waistline with the help of a new recipe book from weight loss organisation slimming World called Family Feasts on a Budget. Nicky, who runs the Bawtry slimming World group every week at Bawtry hall says: “People often think that eating well is expensive but, with a little know-how, it’s possible to cook tasty food that the whole family will love and that’s good for them too.” Family Feasts on a Budget includes a collection of more than 50 delicious money-wise meals for four. the recipes, including meat, veg and fish dishes, all cost £6 or less – that’s £1.50 or less per person – and show that eating

Money-wise meals for the whole family healthily doesn’t have to break the bank. All of the recipes in Family Feasts on a Budget have been created in line with slimming World’s well known Food optimising healthy eating plan. the plan is based on the science of energy density and satiety, meaning slimmers can fill upon healthy, everyday foods that are low in calories yet satisfying. slimmers are encouraged to cook meals from scratch using ‘Free Foods’, which can be enjoyed freely on the plan without weighing or counting, like lean meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, pasta and rice so they can whip up a variety of fabulously filling meals and get the most

from their shopping budget. Nicky adds: “Whatever your family’s tastes – and however fussy they are – you’re bound to discover dishes they’ll love in this new book. From classics like bolognese, Chicken chasseur and Fisherman’s pie through to new ideas to serve up including Paprika pork, turkey burgers with tzatziki and tuna and salad pasta, the recipes suit all cooking abilities. every recipe is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to help novices know what to expect and to tempt the taste buds too. Whether it’s choosing cheaper cuts of meat or breathing new-life into your leftovers, there are lots of clever ways to shop and slim on a shoestring. ”Family Feasts on a Budget is available priced £4.95. everyone’s welcome to pop along to the Bawtry slimming World group at Bawtry hall every thursday at 3:30pm and 5.30pm or any other slimming World Group or for more information they can call Nicky on 07779 274468. Tickhill Lions Club This year’s fundraising bonfire and fireworks extravaganza will be organised jointly with the Tickhill Cricket Club and held on Saturday the 2nd November on the cricket field on Alderson Drive. The bonfire will be lit at 5-30pm with two superb firework shows to follow. The first display will start at 6-00pm with the second after a short interval at approximately 6.45pm. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged, and as ever, all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community and around the world.

the Cricket Club bar will of course be open so bringing your own cans etc. will not be allowed. Novelties and glow sticks will be available for the kids (big and small) and the Cricket Club will be organising a barbecue so don’t have too much tea. this is a family friendly event and whilst noisy, the bangs will not be over the top. the firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view.

in July the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening Programme was launched to reduce the number of men dying from AAAs - caused when the largest blood vessel in the body, the aorta, swells and ruptures, causing massive internal bleeding. Doncaster & Bassetlaw hospitals Nhs Foundation trust is providing the AAA screening Programme across south Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

hilst thinking about our own death is not a comfortable prospect, it is one of very few certainties which we will all face in due course, and it makes sense to ensure that YOU make important decisions about what will happen to your property and assets after your

death rather than for your family to discover that the government will be making those decisions for them at a time when they are coping with the pain of bereavement. It is by no means the case for example that your spouse or partner will automatically inherit everything when you die. Depending on the value of your assets, if you die “intestate” i.e. without having made a will, your estate will be distributed according to a set of rules set down by the government, regardless of what you may have wanted. If you are unmarried and do not own property jointly with your partner, they may get nothing and could even have to leave the property where you lived together so that it can be sold. To avoid this, everyone should consider making a will. They can then ensure that their estate is disposed of in accordance with their wishes, they can appoint executors to deal with the administration of their estate after death, express views about the type of funeral they would like, and, in appropriate cases make decisions now which will reduce the potential tax liability on death. Jones & Co solicitors can advise you about the whole process of making a will, and planning to reduce your liability for taxes on death, as well as advising on trusts, lifetime gifts and many other important financial matters.

Creativity begins at Home Rosemary Firth Art classes Doncaster. The classes held at Rosemary’s Bennetthorpe home are still thriving as they begin their third year. Creative people take part in painting, drawing, batik, felt making, print making and many more artistic activities every week. rosemary used to run her classes from Gallery 12a on Doncaster’s south Parade, but when the lease ran out she decided to continue her classes from home. “At first it was planned as a temporary measure until i found other premises, but it worked so well from home that i didn’t need to look any further”

she creates her own batiks, collagraphs and mixed media work, exhibiting at local exhibitions whenever possible, and recently winning first prize in the Brevonart open exhibition. most students are total beginners when they start, but they are all made to feel very welcome by the friendly atmosphere and copious refreshments. some places are now available on most classes. Tickhill & Bawtry Probus Club

As the long summer days shorten into autumn many of us face the prospect of fewer days out and about, more time in the house and more pressure to reduce the seemingly endless list of jobs which must (?) be done! An escape plan is needed and many of the retired professional and businessmen in Tickhill and Bawtry find the answer in membership of Probus. We meet at the Millstone Hotel on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month starting at 10 for 10.30am. We have a speaker at each meeting and afterwards many of us can be found in the bar for a pre lunch drink. Lunch is also available. Why not come and see if this escape

route appeals to you – you will be very welcome to attend as a guest at any meeting except the Annual Lunch on November 28th which has to be prebooked. Our programme to the end of the year is as follows: 10th October. “Lone Star State” by M Walpole. 24th October. “York Minster Revealed” by Derek Marker. 14th November. “Remembrance” by Members. 28th November. Annual Lunch at the Millstone (members only) 12th December. “Galapagos. The Extraordinary Islands” by B Campbell. something for everyone as the year draws to a close.

Simply Voices Presents Simply Voices presents You’ve Got a Friend: raising money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in December 2012 my family and i, and our many friends, were shocked to get the devastating news that i had cancer. it put an abrupt end to my involvement in Christmas concerts both with simply voices, the large Doncaster mixed choir i run with my husband, stephen Burnage, and with Barnburgh male voice Choir, and suddenly normal life was put on hold. having initially been very well cared for in Doncaster royal infirmary, my treatment was taken over by Weston Park Cancer hospital and a journey of determination began. in may of this year, i was given the wonderful news that the cancer had completely disappeared. ever since my diagnosis, our family had talked about giving 22 22

Retail Association

A great summer was had by all in Bawtry culminating in a fantastic St Leger festival where retailers and businesses in the town had flown Ladbrokes flags to mark the occasion! they say ‘that winter comes on the tail of the last horse of the leger’ and this year it has been very true. still, there is much to look forward to even in colder climes. october, is National Breast Cancer month, and Bawtry’s lingerie boutique & she Knows is once again collecting unwanted bras so that they can hoist their bra-bunting on 17th october. last year approximately 300 bras were collected but this year they are hoping to stretch the unique

24 24

bunting even further around the town! Collection bins are placed at robinsons, elite hair, Crown hotel, Jones & Co solicitors, etc, Bawtry Gym, one Call insurance and the Breast Care units at Doncaster and Bassetlaw hospitals. it is requested that a £2 donation is made for each bra and the money will be equally shared between Doncaster charity Aurora and Breast Cancer Care. And, when the bunting is taken down all bras that are wearable will be sent to Africa to be used. to make the event a Bawtry wide event other retailers are declaring the day ‘Pink thursday’ when participating shops will be decorated in a pink theme, host special offers with some even offering a glass of pink fizz!

Friday 29th November will be our Christmas light switch-on in conjunction with trax Fm road show. Pop the date in your diary and look out for more details next month and at www.bawtry.org - it’s shaping up to be quite an event! During the month you may spot a gent or two that towers above usual Bawtry clientele! reigning rugby league World Champions New Zealand are moving into the Crown hotel for a week as they train for the next world cup in the area. they will be visiting schools in the area and also playing the Cook islands at the Keepmoat stadium on 20th october at 3pm. So as you can see there’s lots going on as usual. See you around! T

Improving dementia care in Doncaster – work with us We all know someone who has or will have some form of memory loss, whether this is diagnosed as being dementia or not. Our aim is to work with local people like you, to provide a better understanding of what it means to live with memory loss: whether this is you, a neighbour, friend or relative. In Doncaster we are developing peer support for people with dementia and their carers, accompanied by our dementia befriending scheme. The aim of both services is to help people achieve a good quality of life and give them the added confidence they need to remain independent in their own home. We are hoping to work with local shops, businesses, clubs, groups and networks, as well as healthcare professionals to increase the awareness of dementia and the role that everyone can play in helping to support our local community. Garden View

The Late Show Good planning and preparation can make this time of year a dramatic moment in the garden, but if you feel your outside space lacks autumn pizzazz, the work for next year’s spectacle begins right now. You still have time to plant late flowering herbaceous perennials and hardy grasses, both of which have beautiful flowers in bloom right now, but aim to do this at the beginning of the month. Experiment with vivid red Helenium such as ‘Rubinzwerg’ which look fantastic when planted in front of the biscuit coloured flower spikes of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, or try the much lower, but no less dramatic double pink flowers of Colchicum ‘Water lily’ towards the front of the border.

another species which offers colour and texture to match this diverse range of plants. As i sit in the autumn garden right now, perched on a cold metal bench, i can admire the wonderful tall arching stems of stipa gigantea swaying in the gentle breeze. standing proud since July, this majestic grass will carry on performing until the heavy snow flattens the delicate oat-like flower spikes.

if the subtlety of the grassy flowers are not enough to sustain your need for autumn colour, then try Aster ‘october skies’ for a splash of late season lilac. the daisy like flowers are produced in abundance over a long period of time, and the great news is that it’s happy growing on dry poor soil in sun or even

part shade. it won’t get much bigger than 45cm tall so doesn’t need staking and the colours seem to intensify as the light levels fall. As we progress further into the month, the bright yellows, oranges and reds synonymous with october, slowly deepen before fading to a muddy brown. As the aroma of decay intensifies, i notice the evening light fades faster of late, as the autumn sun sets on another gardening day. happy Gardening. T

Market Hill Car Park. it should not be forgotten that the car park (in the ownership of the town council) has in place a 24 hour tro (traffic regulation order) and this is applicable 365 days of each year, whether on a chargeable or non-chargeable period. it should not be assumed that the market hill can be utilised for other reasons without prior permission. it should also be noted that ‘clamping’ on private car parks in the vicinity is a possibility and that such actions are not within the town Council’s control.

community council is therefore currently considering the repair/ replacement of the turnstile in the Gents’ block at a cost of circa £2k. the facilities are provided for the benefit of visitors to Bawtry and after a petitioned request from the business community – they will be monitored on a regular basis. Currently the toilets are being cleaned by an outside contractor who has received positive comments regarding improved cleanliness.

Highway statutory notices have already been posted regarding the introduction of a permanent taxi rank on the high street to be situated alongside the frontage of Jones, solicitors. it is anticipated that the next step by DmBC will be the implementation of the rank. highway concerns can be reported to DmBC Customer service Centre on Doncaster 01302 736000 or via the ‘red phone’ at Bawtry Community library.

Be Calm – & Bunker on!

Be prepared for a right royal laugh as Everton Village Players bring another great comedy to the stage with “Bunkered” by Lynn Brittney. It is set in a Royal Naval Intelligence Cold War bunker which has somehow been forgotten by the MOD for over 20 years. But four men and women, all dedicated naval personnel, just carry on manning it, still hopeful that they will get their pensions. the trouble starts when Peter, a Chief Petty officer, decides to bring in an old pal to restore the equipment in preparation for his imminent retirement. imagine the surprise at royal Naval hQ when they suddenly start to get signals from what they think is a defunct facility! What is going on? time to call in the marines with of course hilarious consequences. “A witty comedy with manic farce that will have you rocking in your seats”.
