Welcome to
the MAY/JUNE 2014 edition
“So many books, so little time. Frank Zappa Since your last magazine I have been lucky enough to spend Easter in Lanzarote. I have to admit that we did very little while we were there, and saw hardly anything of the Island beyond our resort, however, I did manage to read 7 books! 3 of them were ones on my ‘to read’ list and the other 4 just ones that other people had left behind on the book swap shelf that I liked the look of! My son didn’t get to do much reading for pleasure while we were away, he like so many other teenagers, has exams this summer so for him it was Revision Guides only! I have managed to introduce my youngest to The Famous Five though, and as a result have lost my Kindle for the time being as she downloads them to read on it. Once again we welcome several new advertisers to the magazine this month. Many who contact me for any of my 5 community magazines are very pleasantly surprised how little it costs to advertise. We reach 25,000 homes across the south and east of Doncaster, so if you run a business please give me a call to see if we can assist you. Don’t forget when contacting advertisers old or new please say where you saw their advert! The closing date for the July & August magazine is Monday 16th June. If you have something that you would like included then please make sure it is with me by then.
Best wishes, Paula x

Blizard Physiotherapy “Saturday Breakfast Run” Charity Appeals For
‘Hosts With The Most’ To Help Transform The Lives Of Lonely Elderly People In Doncasterr Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is appealing for volunteers in Doncaster willing to welcome a small group into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year. The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours. The monthly gatherings exist as a vital lifeline of friendship for the charity’s older guests, however, the regular outings for the popular group in Doncaster are currently under threat due to a lack of volunteers able to host the tea parties. Contact the Elderly’s North and Midlands Executive Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Doncaster is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a decent sized teapot is eligible! Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” Anyone interested in volunteering please contact Mary Robinson on 01535 632 592 or email mary.robinson@ contact-the-elderly.org.uk T 4

Country Show and Open Day Sunday 18th May 2014 This year the fourth Northern Racing College Show has been renamed Country Show and Open Day. The show, which is a joint effort with Doncaster College, has been expanded to include small animals, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. as well as the usual Fun Dog Show and classes for horses and ponies, including jumping and Handy Pony. In addition there will be classes for donkeys and driving classes for horses and ponies. Visitors to the show will also be able to visit the Northern Racing College and its facilities and those of Doncaster College’s Animal Care Department, both of which are on the Rossington Hall site. It promises to be a good day out for all the family. Further information can be found on the website www.nrccharityshow.co.uk T
Bessacarr & Cantley Ward Councillors I do think there may have been some misunderstanding after our entry in the March/April edition of Bessacarr & Cantley Today. Our article stated that we could no longer produce Focus the Liberal Democrat newsletter; that if you were interested in being an Independent councillor you should contact any one of us and thirdly that I (Eric Tatton-Kelly) was standing down in May. I am standing down. I have had ten enjoyable and busy years representing the residents of this ward. I hope I have made a difference; certainly it is not through the lack of trying. But there comes a time when it is time to go. The Party has been aware of this for at least a year now. I wanted all to understand that this is a matter of age alone and my standing down has nothing to do with events surrounding Monty and Paul. I have been a party member for 50 years and will remain a member. I have no wish to be contacted regarding Independent councillors. From experience over years I have realised Independents do not survive long in our borough. You will by now have received Focus number 100 indicating that the Liberal Democrats continue as before. May I recommend our candidate for the May elections, Diana Simpson. Diana has been a friend and colleague for many years and I am quite sure she would continue the Liberal Democrat reputation for good service. community Our building work has started and we are all getting very excited. We have been left a sum of money from a lovely benefactor with the proviso that the money went towards a project. We have needed a new Reception area for quite some time and this has given us the opportunity to start this new build. We hope that other kind hearted people can contribute to help us finish this project.
Finding a forever home
The reception will enable us to offer a warm friendly and inviting environment; we will also then be able to offer group and school education sessions and seminars to help educate children and adults about caring for animals. The ongoing work will be a little disruptive so please bear with us when you come along to view any of our dogs and cats. A big thank you to all the Mayflower Angels that have brought washing powder, washing up liquid, black bags etc this has saved us a fortune. Please everyone feel free to contribute if you would like to. This is a great benefit to us. We still have some lovely puppies that need good homes, if you think you can give a puppy a home and have bags of patience and energy please come and see us. We also have some beautiful dogs and cats waiting for that special person to give them a home. We have had to re arrange one of our fund raising events. The photo shoot for your beloved pet has been postponed to the 6th July to coincide with our Scruffs Dog Show in Tickhill. 8

Traditional Chinese Medicine
Herbs & Acupuncture Meet Dr Yuan – Master in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
FREE CONSULTATIONS Dr Yuan – Traditional Chinese Herbs & Acupuncture Therapy Dr Yuan has practiced as TCM doctor for over 24 years. He is a master in acupuncture and TCM. However what is rare about Dr Yuan in comparison to your average TCM doctor is that he is one of the best you will ever find in the UK. His experience is so extensive that for many years before he moved to the UK he trained Chinese doctors in hospitals to specialise in their fields. He has now been in the UK for a few years. He had a practice in Doncaster town centre and Peterborough. Some of his patients still travel from Peterborough to seek his advice! Dr Yuan is now running his practice from home in Cantley and will also make home visits in the Cantley and Bessacarr area if preferred.
• Psoriasis • Menstrual problems • Cough • Asthma • IBS • Infertility • Back / Shoulder Pain • Migraine
• Arthritis • Eczema • Acne • Sciatica • Depression • Stress • Sports Injuries • & much more
We offer: Acupuncture; Herbs Therapy; TCM Therapy Massage, Cupping Therapy; etc.
What are the acupuncture and herbs used for? Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has existed for over 4,000 years. The methods used by Dr Yuan to diagnose a patient are centuries old. In those days they didn’t have x-rays to check your lungs, but just by looking at your tongue and checking your pulse he can see the conditions of internal organ function and circulation. TCM does not treat your ailments with more side effects, instead it looks at your body as a whole, considering that perhaps there is another problem elsewhere that scans are not showing. By treating your whole body, ALL of your immune system and ailments get better, not one at a time. There are no side effects to TCM!

Do you suffer with headaches unnecessarily?
Headaches are something most of us are familiar with – whether it’s the occasional alcohol induced fog or a more debilitating weekly occurrence. But did you know that problems in the neck are estimated to be the cause of headaches in 18% of the population? (Other causes include migraine, cluster headaches, tension headaches and serious pathology). Stiffness in the joints and tissues of the spine can cause headaches with the patient typically experiencing a dull ache or boring pain on one or both sides of the head or face. Accompanying symptoms can include nausea, blurred vision, dizziness or light-headedness. These headaches may be occasional or frequent and can last from a few hours to a few days. Patients (more often female than male) usually have a long history of headaches and may have visited their GP many times over the years. Symptomatic treatment using painkillers is often unsatisfactory in the long term. If you have headaches like this, it could be that the root cause of the problem is in the neck. An appointment with a physiotherapist would enable them to assess and test your neck to establish the presence of any movement dysfunction in the spine which could then be corrected with appropriate manual therapy techniques, exercise and advice. Meanwhile, keep your neck healthy by checking your posture, taking regular breaks from any activity where your neck is held in one position, relaxing if you are prone to stress to reduce tension across your shoulders and avoiding using too many pillows in bed.

A concert in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Featuring: Crime figures across the area are generally looking good year on year. However, the most concerning area of crime at the minute is vehicle crime, particularly theft from vehicles. I cannot stress enough the importance of not leaving anything on show. Even the sight of a small amount of change left on show will give some criminals enough motive to put a window through. Do not leave empty carrier bags, or ones containing nothing but rubbish on show. They do not know that they contain nothing of value, and will want to have a look to check. Some people decide to leave their cars unlocked to avoid having a window put through, but this is not the answer. The majority of criminals are opportunists, and will try every car door on a street and search them if unlocked, whether there is anything on view or not. Please follow the above advice, and most importantly report anything suspicious. If there is someone acting suspiciously, this is usually for a reason, so do not think that someone else will ring. Even if we do not catch them with anything on them, if they keep getting reported and stopped by us, they will think twice about returning to the same area again. Call South Yorkshire Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or via their website. T

Bessacarr & Cantley Community Forum The Bessacarr & Cantley Community Forum was originally one a number of community forums set up by Doncaster Council in 1999 to improve communication between the Council and local communities and to give those communities a voice. In 2006 the Forum set up its own constitution, independent of the Council, and became selffunding. The Forum aims to promote awareness of local issues, and provide an environment where these issues can be discussed. The Forum is open to all residents of Bessacarr and Cantley, and all stakeholders in the area who are interested in helping the organisation to achieve its aims. There is usually a speaker, and local councillors often attend although the Forum is non-political. The Forum meets on the second Wednesday in January, March, May, July, September and November. The meetings remaining this year are on:

Planes, Trains and Bikes to Berlin by Lee Jackson – Bliss Travel There can be no more appropriate a travel game for a visit to Berlin than eye-spy, especially for a visitor of my age with many memories of the Cold War. As we arrive in Hauptbahnhof station after a very comfortable rail journey from London we look for something beginning with “B” and the list is endless, Bear, Brecht, Brandenburg, Bauhaus, Bowie but top of our own list, and not an obvious choice, is the word “Bicycle”, more easily associated with Amsterdam but as we will find out a common feature of modern Berlin. Following a superb journey through the German countryside, via Brussels and Cologne, and in the first class comfort of Eurostar and then German Railways, we arrive both relaxed and excited about our break to Berlin. Our enthusiasm to visit Berlin by rail had been hugely rewarded with sumptuous comfort on the Eurostar train and an easy connection in Cologne. At the centre of our visit is a 5 hour guided bike tour where we will get an insider’s guide to the city under our own steam in the warm spring sunshine. Berlin is easily and superbly covered through its rail and tram system. At the same time many of the popular visitor attractions, especially those of the former Eastern side of the wall are easily covered on foot. On arrival we make a quick stop at the Berlin Info Store in the station to obtain a group pass for the transport system, which at 18 Euro for the three of us is fantastic value and includes our journey to Schonefeld airport for the flight home. After our rail journey we welcome the opportunity to walk and follow the river Spree by the Reichstag and the new German Parliament buildings and on to our hotel on Fredreichstrasse. Almost immediately we spot groups of people making their way around the city on organised bike sightseeing tours and I feel more relaxed about my children’s ability to negotiate the Berlin traffic! Our hotel base is very well located right by Fredreichstrasse station, conveniently close for the central sights and with immediate S-Bahn and U-bahn rail connections. The Eurostars hotel is
modern, clean and comfortable with an indoor pool that may bring a welcome relief in the heat of summer but holds no such draw with so much in the city to discover this time around. Having dumped our bags it is just a 10 minute walk down Fredreichstrasse to reach the former control point between East and West Berlin famously known as “Checkpoint Charlie”. Little remains of the actual crossing point, only the wooden guard hut from the US Sector remains, and alongside it actors dressed in US military uniforms to make the most of the tourist desire for a photo opportunity. However, alongside the former checkpoint is a museum that records the history of the divided city and includes amazing examples of escape attempts by those trapped in the East. The relics, including a specially made welding unit constructed to hold a person, an adapted VW petrol tank that carried many escapees to the west and a zip wire harness that was used successfully by a family in the dead of night. We spend almost two hours looking through the information and exhibits and could easily spend more time there given the extent of the material. Instead, with the evening approaching we decide to walk to Potsdammer Platz as a likely venue for dinner. The area had stood barren for many years before being developed under the umbrella of the unified city were German property developers and architects have turned the area into a futuristic entertainment hub. After a few photographs of the imposing architecture we notice a hive of activity in the Sony centre and walk in on the German premier of the new Spiderman movie but elect to stay clear of the crowds and exit in search of dinner.

Garden View
A Thorny Issue Whatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional English gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again. Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. That said they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the 60’s with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion. Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you 24
need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil. Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle. Problems include; brown scale, rose aphids, rose leaf-rolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said there are disease-resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent. For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact. On a sunny wall try; Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’, a great repeat flowerer with small double pink flowers, ‘Lady Waterlow’ for silky pink blooms and healthy foliage, ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for exquisite scent, or ‘Etoile de Hollande’ for a splash of rich scarlet red. Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for
BESSACARR & CANTLEY TODAY
covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester Cathedral’ which look fabulous when under planted with lavender or lush low growing evergreens. Finally for a wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’.
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Bessacarr and Cantley Ward Councillors CANDIDATE FOR MAY ELECTIONS
FOCAL POINTS BESSACARR LIBRARY IS TO REMAIN OPEN. Mainly due to a number of volunteering Bessacarr residents unwavering work setting an example to the rest of the Borough, the Council has made the decision that they will not close the Library.
A DECISION ON THE FATE OF CANTLEY LIBRARY HAS BEEN PUT OFF FOR THREE MONTH. The uncertain fate of this library has been going on for a few years, mainly due to the neglected state it has been allowed to deteriorate to. In order for this Library to remain open volunteer residents will need to equal, if not better the achievements of the Bessacarr volunteer team. Your Bessacarr Councillors have put up argument after argument to keep the Library in its present locality. We have always been told that its present location is not fit for purpose, so we suggested the closed Sycamore School or the St Wilfreds Court Newsagent shop that had been closed for about six years be used, but we found obstacles in our way at every turn. Suddenly after six years a number of business people want the shop. According to the Council no community group could afford to take on Sycamore and when we were approached by a person who wanted to use Sycamore for a private but community minded business plus the Library we were informed rules and regulations would not allow. Many people say “Bah humbug” when the word politics comes into a conversation, but the achievement of you residents, coming out and voicing your opinions about this Library and achieving the delay to its closure is the use of politics. Not Party Politics but community politics. Your action has put the Council back to the point of thinking about the means of keeping the Library open. Too keep them there it is essential that volunteers come forward to help run it. 28
BESSACARR & CANTLEY TODAY
As expected, there was no rush forward of anyone to join Paul and Monty on the Council this May so under the circumstances when we know who is standing we may issue a statement as to who we think will work best with us to maintain the service that you have had for the last 16 years.
BESSACARR PRIMARY REQUESTS THREE MORE CLASSROOMS Your local Councillors are extremely concerned and are raising the issue within Council about three more classrooms proposed for Bessacarr Primary School. We are at a complete loss to understand the closure of Sycamore Primary School in Cantley when within a few months two more classrooms required adding to Bessacarr Primary in Ellers Avenue. The request for an additional three classrooms follows on from more and more development on Lakeside. Your Councillors are currently stating that these decisions are totally unfair to the residents of West Bessacarr who have suffered since the 1990’s the overwhelming congestion caused by parents delivering children to school by car, the congestion increased further by the introduction of two more classrooms in 2011 and now threatened with a further three. The time to say no was in 2011, but the first residents knew the classrooms were coming was when they arrived on trucks.
Saturation point has long since been reached, “Say no now” We call for the enlargement of Lakeside Primary School which is near enough to the large Lakeside Car Park to cater for the children by car and the children of the residents of Lakeside, or the re-opening of Sycamore Primary School. Monty Cuthbert 01302 539902 Paul Coddington 01302 532915
