So how’s your New Year’s resolution?

Many people vow to improve health and fitness at this time of year...maybe stop smoking, cut down on alcohol, eat better, lose weight etc.....

If this is you then how can you make sure that your New Year promise carries on past the first few days of January? First of all look for the positives... don’t think about what you are giving up...focus on what benefits the changes you are making will bring you...a healthier body, more energy, a longer life even?! Making changes IS difficult, us human beings are creatures of habit, we like to stay in our ‘comfort

zone’ doing what we always do but if we change nothing then nothing changes! Small sustainable changes are the way to go; a small change makes a BIG difference long term You are far more likely to achieve your goals if you actually enjoy your new lifestyle and the changes that go along with it. For instance if you want to improve fitness then choose something that you enjoy and is fun! If you love Strictly and are missing your regular Saturday night fix then why not try a FitSteps class to learn the Latin and Ballroom steps mixed with fitness moves-no partner or dance talent required! At our Rosemary Conley classes we have a variety of

different exercise classes so you’ll find something that you enjoy. We offer the whole package-come along and lose weight with us or simply join us just for the exercise if fitness is your goal. T

A Postcard from the Swedish Mountains Lee Jackson Report from

Having developed a fondness for New England, in both the fall and the Snow, our visit to the Swedish mountains prompted an immediate question “why didn’t they consider calling New England New Sweden instead”!

There are of course very sound historical reasons that the six states across the Atlantic reference these shores not least due to the fact that the area was originally settled by the pilgrim fathers from South Yorkshire. But following our visit to Sweden it is clear that the architecture of the New England region resembles more closely that of the Scandinavian settlers and I was soon equally enthralled with the Swedish landscape. Faced with the need to satisfy a three year thirst for the Ski slopes I pondered the possibility of a four day break for my son and I, and settled on the top Swedish ski destination of Are, pronounced “aura”. With a short connection in Amsterdam our 6am flight from Manchester got us into Trondheim (Norway) shortly after midday. Though our primary purpose was to get as much time on the piste as possible the 2 hour journey across the E14, proved a delight rather than a delay. After a few miles of red barns dotted along the frozen riverside in Norway we headed up into the mountains, over the Swedish border, and amongst the vast frozen lakes, before descending into Are and the immediate promise of the pistes. We soon realised that our equipment hire would have been better arranged at one of the mountainside locations rather than the resort centre, still at least we got a quick glimpse of the village and after making our way quickly to 10 10

of Bliss Travel

the Are Continental hotel, we grabbed some floodlit skiing and tobogganing in Are Bjornen, the family focused area. Though only a small number of blue level pistes are lit we were able get an easy entry back onto the slopes and ended the evening with dinner at the hotel overjoyed with our day and our snow filled Nordic surroundings. Our stay at the Are Continental was driven through the limited options in booking late within the school holiday, and trying to stick to our budget for the overall 4 day trip. A few online comments suggested that the hotel was very functional and a few kilometres beyond the centre of Are but as our trip was largely about hours on piste and we were minutes from the lifts at Bjornen it seemed to fit the bill. Though the comments are completely accurate, both in terms of hotel design and location, the public areas of the hotel were sufficiently cosy to provide a welcome refuge after a day on the slopes and I would have no hesitation in returning there all be it with the recommendation of a car in preference to the limited availability of the ski bus. The fashionable ski resort of Are sits by the lake of the same name and links the resorts of Are, Bjornen, Tegerfjall and Duved. On this visit our skiing was limited to Are and Bjornen which provided sufficient variety for an intermediate and a youngster just getting to grips with the blue slopes. Our days in Are were packed from start to finish on the slopes, interspersed with great Scandinavian food on the

BESSACARR & CANTLEY TODAY

mountain and cinnamon infused breaks for hot chocolate. Of particular note was the area of Ulladalen, a meeting point for alpine and cross country tracks and a frozen vista of Nordic beauty deserving of an extended stay in the Ulladalsstugen restaurant. In comparing the Swedish skiing experience to that of the Alps there is a unique and effortless cool to the Nordic option. The associated bling that comes from the fashionable requirements of the high profile alpine resorts sits very differently to the natural Swedish approach where a rucksack containing sausages for the piste-side barbecue is much more valued consideration. And though the panorama does not include the array of mountain spikes of Austria, France or Italy, the atmosphere on the slopes makes for a unique Nordic mood that is equally compelling. There is also much else to do in the Swedish mountains and the offpiste options in Are are much more than a simple side show. For starters the sport of cross country skiing is engrained in the Nordic way of life and is more popular than the downhill version. There is also the opportunity to travel across the vast lakes much faster by arranging a skidoo safari, and with ice fishing and husky sledding also on the agenda we really did need more time to get the best of Are and the surrounding region. For further information on Ski Breaks to Sweden call Bliss Travel on 01302 719000. T

My Child Ran E A G L E a Huge Bill

[L E G A L ]

& it has left me un’APPy

We are hearing more and more stories about parents being slapped with big bills due to their children playing games on iPhone/iPad and other similar devices. But what can you do if this happens to you? If you have received a bill that your child has run up: In the first instance contact the company and tell them that your child ran up the bill without your knowledge and more importantly without your authority. Some, but not all companies will have sympathy with this and write off the bill. If the company refuses to write the bill off you need to be more persistent. Write them a letter and state the following: • the age of your child; • that you did not know that your child was incurring a bill when playing the game; • that you did not give permission to your child to incur a bill; and • that you did not consent to the purchase. You should also state that technically the gaming company has entered into a contract with your child, as it is he/ she that purchased from them and 18 18

agreed to pay and that in the circumstances the ‘contract’ formed with them is void. The reason for this is that a ‘child’ cannot create a legally binding contract in these circumstances and the effect is that they will not be able to sue you for the money. If you try the above routes and they fail there may be an alternative solution if the company automatically debited your credit card. If this is the case you should contact your card provider and explain to them that i) you did not authorise the purchase and therefore the charge, ii) it was your child that purchased without your permission; and iii) in the circumstances you would like to make a claim under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. If your provider agrees to your claim they will reimburse your account with the money you have paid and then take the matter up directly with the gaming company. However, please note 2 important points; 1) this only works if the amount in dispute is more than £100 and 2) it does not apply to ‘debit’ cards. Finally, if all else fails report the company to the office of fair trading (“OFT”). In this respect the OFT says that gaming companies should follow the following principles: • Making sure players are told about any costs, accurately and prominently, upfront before downloading or signing up to a game, or agreeing to make a purchase. • Games should not imply payments are required or are an integral part of the way the game is played, if neither is the case. • Games should not encourage children to make in-game purchases through aggressive sales techniques. • Payments should not be taken unless authorised. For example, users must be made aware they will only be required to enter their

BESSACARR & CANTLEY TODAY

password once every 20 minutes, regardless of the number of transactions made within that time. Information about the business should be clear and prominent, in particular, so consumers know who to contact in case of queries or complaints. Obviously prevention is better than cure, so if your child plays with games online consider the following: • Passwords – make sure that your child does not know your password so that they have to ask you when prompted for this; • Restrict in-app purchases with a password/Pin. – a simple but effective solution which will mean that if your child attempts to do something that is going to cost you money they will be prompted for a password; • Apple. Tap Settings > General > Restrictions, then choose whether you need to input your password every time you make a purchase • Android. Set a Pin with your Google Play account. All purchases will then require the Pin. • Blackberry. Making in-app purchases on a Blackberry is possible once you’ve logged in with your Blackberry ID and password. You will stay logged in for 20 minutes after entering the password. • Unlink your credit/debit card from your account. This will stop your card being automatically debited but will not stop a bill being run up; • Use parental controls on your device. Most devices have parental controls, ask your mobile network provider what is available to you.

Garden View

A Shady Space

Light levels during January & February are low and the days are short, but now the winter solstice has passed, days are slowly lengthening. There are however, areas of the garden which never receive much sunlight, and these shady spaces are often the conversation starter when I speak to gardeners. A south facing garden is on the priority list of most house hunters, but in reality there must be around the same number of houses built on the dark side of the road! If you’re lucky enough to have a front and back garden, then you should have somewhere to grow the sun lovers, but it’s often a rear shady garden which causes most frustration. So what’s my answer? Embrace the shade! Shady spaces can be much more atmospheric than those open to full sun, they have a great earthy smell and can support a diverse range of plants and mosses. My suggestion is to layer the planting, so that it looks like the creation of shade is intentional. I would probably go as far as to erect a structure, such as a pergola or shade sail over the top, creating a cosy outdoor room, and use lighting 22 22

to visually warm the space at night. Your layering process begins with the boundaries. The first stage is to paint them black, and before you scream ‘BLACK?!’ out loud, hear me out. Painting the boundaries black will help them to fade into the background once plants mature. The second stage is to clothe the fences and walls with climbers. Although hated by some, Ivy is perfect for this, but other things to try are shade-tolerant Honeysuckles or wall shrubs such as Hydrangea petiolaris and Garrya elliptica. For additional flower colour, why not cram in a couple of Clematis? Introduce height with a small tree such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ or the evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei. Clump forming bamboo makes a great vertical accent, as does the banana Musa basjoo. Next in our ‘shade lasagne’ are the shrubs such as the purple leaved Acers, Viburnum tinus, Box (which can be clipped into shapes to add formality) and Sarcococca. Smaller perennials such as Astilbe, Aconitum and Hellebores provide colour and finally ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium scholopendrium supply wonderful glossy ground cover. So there you have it, a shady oasis,

BESSACARR & CANTLEY TODAY

and as with most things in life, if you fully embrace it, a north facing shady garden can be magical. T

Until next time, happy gardening ,
