elcome to the October
edition of HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY.
Despite my love of summer, the change in season from summer to autumn is one of my favourites. Our clocks go back an hour on 28th October, meaning the nights are darker, the leaves are falling, and Strictly Come Dancing is back on the TV! It’s time for cosy nights on the sofa, when you can relax with a cuppa and take a good look through this edition! For those of you who like to plan ahead for Christmas, now is the time to start. You might just find inspiration for that unusual gift, and if you would like to get your house and garden ready for the festive season, you’ll find all the local people you need to help you within these pages. It’s still a tough economic climate, and its important to spend money wisely and locally, to help us all through these challenging times. The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th October. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 12th October.
Best Wishes, Paula

Arts Review and What’s Going On - October 2012 Hilary Cartmel Macbeth was good, and still is, - if you can get yourself a ticket – do so. My guess is that it will be sold out. The miserable darkness of the stark Scottish landscape and chill castles was staged very simply. It’s a play where the scenes take place mostly in gloaming or darkness even during daytime there is little light. I did Macbeth for my ‘O’ level English Lit, and there was a time when I could have recited tracts of it. I haven’t seen it on stage since, and this production did it proud. It’s the first time that I have seen the Crucible main stage set up in the round, the audience tightly and completely encircling a round stage set with ‘rocks’ around its edge and echoing the image and theme of the crown which was repeated and emphasised in many ways throughout the play, continually reminding us that without the lust for the Crown there would be no plot. The action didn’t take any prisoners, Banquo’s ghost was horrifying, we saw Lady McDuff’s brains dashed out and the sword fight at the end looked and sounded very real, the witches were old hags and not some idea of supernatural spooks, the poetry was beautifully spoken. Crucible Theatre until Saturday 6 October. In contrast the Sheffield Theatres are doing some comedy in October, it’s the Last Laugh Comedy Festival including some household names. Tickets £12 - £21.50 At the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Wakefield – Kneehigh Theatre have reworked Steptoe and Son – until October13 - Darkly comic, and deeply moving, this is a 20th century icon, re imagined for the new generation. www.wyp.org.uk Closer to home on Friday 12 October at The Rock (Wesley Centre, Maltby) is John Tams and Barry Coope – in my humble opinion Tams is the best voice singing in the English Folk tradition and together they are one of the funniest duos to grace any stage. Good therapy. Tickets £10 on the door www.therock.org.uk At Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery from 20 October until 9 December the annual ‘Open Art’ exhibition begins with walls hung floor to ceiling with work from artists across the region with many works for sale. At Cusworth Hall an exhibition entitled Opposites Attract – a two person show - Ashley Jackson and Graham Ibbeson, two of Yorkshire’s best loved artists ( not counting Hockney of course) I can’t imagine what this show will look like, but I have every faith that it will work well. Ibbeson was a student at Trent Poly( as I was - but long before my time you understand) and was famous for two things, his ability to consume sandwiches and his wonderful humorous clay modelling. Tickhill Music Society’s October concert is on the 19th – Guitarist Dimitris Dekavallas program to include Bach, Guillliani and others at St Mary’s School at 8pm tickets £10 on the door Village Ventures is bringing music from American roots musicians Buffalo Gals to Bircotes Town Hall on Sunday 21 October . Marley Approx age: 4 months Yet another kitten from an unwanted litter. Although his previous owner loved Marley very much, she was unable to keep him due to her daughters allergies. Marley is just a treasure to have around. Always looking for fun, he will play with a scrap of paper for hours but he is just as happy curled up in your lap having his tummy tickled. All he wants is a family to call his own, regular meals and a basket (or lap) to snuggle up into. Not much to ask for is it? Blue
Greyhound x Whippet Age on arrival: 9 months old
Blue finds himself looking for a new home because his previous owners are now working long hours and feel it is unfair to leave him alone. We have found Blue to be a very loving and playful dog, who has quickly become a favourite with everyone who has worked with him. Blue has had an operation on his patella (kneecap) and is recovering well. Should there be any re-occurrence in the future Mayflower will be responsible for his treatment. Because he can be boisterous at times we feel he would be better homed with children that were slightly older, if any at all, just to cut down on the risk of him jumping up and hurting a youngster. Blue is a dog with lots of potential and with the right handling we feel he will quickly become a much loved member of any family. 14 | HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

arworth Brass
Harworth Brass have experienced many changes and challenges over the years. First formed in 1937 by William Appleton, the band were re-formed in the 1970’s and have been known as Harworth Colliery Band, Harworth Colliery Caledonian Mining Band and more recently simply Harworth Brass. During the 1990’s they saw success in many competiitons, winning the 3rd section and being promoted to the 2nd section in the North East Midlands Region. However in recent years their numbers dropped and they ceased to compete. Over the past few years the band numbers have grown, we have a new bandroom at the Town Hall and our conductor Claire Cowan ensures we are always busy and challenged, performing varied and interesting programmes. Previous players have returned, together with new members and the band age range is now between 11 and 82 years. The atmosphere is friendly, hardworking and enjoyable. In 2013 we will begin entering competitions again and are now looking forward to an exciting future; expanding the concert programme and getting involved in local events. The summer saw the band playing in the rain at the Jubilee Celebrations and in the sunshine (with not too much rain) at other events. We have a busy calendar up to Christmas including concerts and carols at various venues including Ye Olde Bell, Tesco,Balby and The West Retford Hotel. If you are a brass player or would like to be involved in the running of the band, and would like to meet us, we rehearse at the Town Hall in Harworth at 7pm on Thursday evenings. Should you need a brass band for a concert or wish to attend any of our concert venues all details are on our Website: www.harworthbrass.co.uk. It’s never to late to learn to Swim
They say that 1 in 5 adults cannot swim and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life! So why doesn’t everyone who hasn’t learnt to swim by the time they are adults get themselves off to swimming lessons to learn? I run a private adult swimming school at Bircotes Leisure Centre every Sunday night and have been teaching adult swimmers of all ages and abilities for some considerable time, so I reckon I’ve heard most of the reasons that people come up with. Here’s a few: swimming gets you (and particularly your hair) wet; you have to expose bits of you that you’d rather keep under wraps; it’s probably too late to learn at your age. Some of these things are true: it is very wet in a swimming pool and it is better to swim in a swimming costume than in everyday clothes. As for it being too late to learn, most adults are surprised to find how quickly they can learn. Of course it takes different people different amounts of time, and each person has different aspirations, but to be able to enter the pool and travel around without support should only take a matter of a few lessons. There is one very real fear that many adults have regarding learning to swim, and that is that they will be recognised. I guess this fear attaches itself to the fear of exposing more of your body than you care to share with the public and the embarrassment of admitting you can’t swim. Firstly I can attest to the truth of the rumour that it is very difficult to recognise people with their clothes on. I have been caught out on a number of occasions by people coming up to me and holding long and detailed conversations with me, while I stand there in bewilderment wondering who they are. Secondly, everyone in the class is in exactly the same position as you; they are there to learn to swim and are wearing a swimming costume (and probably won’t recognise you with your clothes on either). In addition, as we hire the whole pool for the lessons, there is no chance that Mark Foster or Sharron Davies will turn up unannounced to upstage you. Remember, swimming is probably the only sport that can save your life as well as being probably the most complete workout for your body. It is also fun. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to enjoy the pool and sea on holiday, go swimming with your kids or simply use the skill to get fit. It’s worth getting wet for. Michael Keeble

Introducing Rev. Jim Magee the new Methodist Minister for five churches around Doncaster, Cantley, Auckley, Bawtry, Rossington and Harworth. In 1975 I left Northern Ireland to train as a church minister, first in Edinburgh, then in 1977 Manchester, from where I graduated in 1980. Whilst in Manchester Jane and I met, in 1979 we were married. My first church was in Bramley Leeds, David our first son was born in December of 1980 in St. James’ Hospital. Over the years we have lived in Kent (where our second son Peter was born in 1984); Cumbria; Norfolk; Derbyshire, and now Doncaster. My interests are music, films, books, walking in the countryside, Dr.Who, and Strictly Come Dancing. Between us Jane and I have a very wide variety of DVD’s, CD’s, and books which range from crime fiction to poetry, and of course Dr. Who memorabilia. Besides my church work and activities, I have become since August the new Chaplain to Doncaster Rovers, this is something new and very exciting, especially on match days. Since 1989, (when I moved from The Nazarene Church into The Methodist Church), I have been researching the Celtic churches and their influence on the British Isles. As part of that research I have, and continue to use in my personal devotions and also my church services, prayers, poems and reflections created in a ‘Celtic style’. I also belong to a community that seeks to deepen personal and public prayer, especially using meditation technics such as silence. Like the early church leaders, we also seek to live by a discipleship rule of life, and a daily rhythm that is a combination of prayer, bible study and practical charitable works. Congratulations to 5 year old The last area I worked in was around former Mining Madison who together with her Communities in Derbyshire, so coming to my new role parents, Janine and Andy and amongst my five churches continues that link. A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector,
Neil Bellamy Let’s close the gate on criminality
Large areas of East Bassetlaw are rural – small villages and hamlets, farms and agricultural land. Lovely places to live and, many people would think, largely crime free. But sadly, that is not the case and often rural areas are just as attractive to criminals as town and city centres. So even in rural areas it is just as important to take simple precautions to prevent crime and together we can close the gate on criminality across East Bassetlaw.

NEWS FROM HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TOWN COUNCIL
I was pleased to see the Highways team out recently, repainting the pedestrian crossing on Scrooby Road. I was surprised to see them working on a Sunday, but of course it makes sense, as the road is quieter, therefore access to the crossing is better, and disruption to traffic minimal. It would be even better if it was a Pelican crossing; flashing lights might make pedestrians feel safer. The Nuisance Factor still persists in our community: someone thought it clever to spray one of the new gateway signs with paint. You will remember five new signs were installed, one at each entrance to Harworth and Bircotes, and they are quality signs paid for by public money. So why vandalise the sign on Styrrup Road that depicts the Church? And what was clever about stealing a small trolley from the parade of shops? It belonged to an elderly gentleman who was using it to transport his heavy shopping; it was later found dumped on Tickhill Road, broken and non-repairable. Lengthsman Pilot Scheme: Progress Report. As you know, our ‘lengthsmen’ are tasked with working in several other villages as well as our Town, and this arrangement seems to be working well. Looking at our own community, I drove down Wright’s Hill and noticed the hedges had been strimmed, the path was at least one foot wider, and foliage hiding road signs had been cut back. What a difference! Normally, this would have been the responsibility of Notts. County Council. Bulb planting in the grass verges will recommence this autumn, and the Gibbets Lane area will also be tidied up. Seeing the improvements made me think of my Mum, who often says ‘some jobs, if you want them doing well – do yourself’, and there seems to be some truth in this case. Sure Start Children’s Centre. I hope people realise how lucky we are to have this facility in our community. I was asked recently what the Children’s Centre does, so let’s look at some facts: In addition to providing excellent facilities for children and support to parents, the Centre has an antenatal clinic with a midwife in attendance, and a health visitor baby clinic. A Welfare Rights advisor attends fortnightly 86% of children under 5 in our community are registered with the Centre; Notts. County Council had set a target of 70%, so at Harworth and Bircotes Sure Start has proved to be a real success On average 23 parents attend the Adult Education classes at the Centre, and all who sat the Maths and English exam passed. The parents also won an award for developing a sensory panel. The Learning Zone Project is about to launch the Outreach Support Programme With support from staff at the Centre 4 parents have started Diploma courses and volunteering within the community, 2 long term unemployed parents have found jobs, and 3 parents are starting fulltime courses at North Notts. College – so congratulations to them on their achievement, and well done to the staff for their encouragement and help. Some years ago I was involved in one of the first pilot Sure Start schemes, and I know the importance of investing in our children and the rewards it brings. Nottinghamshire County Council has acknowledged that there is a need for Sure Start in our Town and in recognition of the benefits it brings to our population they have confirmed that funding will continue. Scouts in Harworth and Bircotes. I have been talking to a representative of Bassetlaw Scouts; they would dearly like to begin a branch in our community. We all know the values that the Scouts bring to our children and I am sure you would support the appearance of a group locally. So have a look at their advert in this magazine and contact them if interested. District Councillor Surgery. People seem happier contacting us by telephone, or visiting our homes, or by talking to us when out and about, rather than making a special trip to the monthly surgery in the Community Information Centre. Therefore the Councillor surgery will cease, simply because it is not used; should the situation change, then of course it can be resurrected. Cllr. June Evans I wish to correct a belief that Town Councillors receive an annual payment. Town Councillors receive no payment at all. The only allowance that your councillors receive is travelling expenses for attending training courses. County Councillors and District Councillors are paid and the details of the amounts are published annually by Notts CC and Bassetlaw DC. Scouting in Bassetlaw needs your help! There has been interest in Bircotes and Harworth from the young people there to start a scout group. This is fantastic news, however what is needed to give these young people the opportunity to experience the fun, adventure and life skills Scouting has to offer is LEADERS. The young people require enthusiastic and caring volunteers from the local community to become section leaders. These volunteers will be fully CRB vetted and given the opportunity to undergo fun, exciting and accredited training to equip them to be a dynamic and positive influence on the development of young people. Also they will require a venue to meet? Somewhere the size of a church hall, class room or school hall etc. So if you know of anywhere please email the below contacts. Once in place the County and District teams will be on hand to support and guide these new leaders and young people in their scouting lives.
