portrayed landscapes in the South of France in bold and vibrant primary colours. www. doncaster.gov.uk/museums Friends of Doncaster Museum 21 April at 11am PETER ROBINSON explores another aspect of Doncaster’s History www.doncaster.gov.uk/ services/culture-leisure-tourism/doncastermuseums-service

At the end of February we saw, at Cast (in DonCASTer) the best piece of physical theatre / dance I’ve seen in many years. Gecko, an internationally-touring theatre company are based, improbably, in Ipswich. ‘The Wedding’ was a bizarre portrayal of a dystopian world where we are all married to the State. This message was clear and uncomfortable and felt real, however, there was humour and laughter (a group of four refugees emerging from their home – a suitcase), yes, it was a Shakespearian interlude of black humour, along with terror and wonderful, wonderful movement. Their work was completely compelling and the auditorium (which was sold-out) gave them a standing ovation at the end. If you missed it, you missed a treat. What a coup for Doncaster. Cast in Doncaster 8 April 7.30pm ‘KATE RUSBY’ in concert. 18 & 19 April at 7pm ‘NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS FESTIVAL’ Cast are hosting this event in April where local young people have the opportunity to perform new plays written for their age group. A number of youth theatre groups are taking part, including CATS from Tickhill. They have been involved in workshops linked to the theme of the play they were given in December and are now rehearsing, ready to perform it in front of a National Theatre director and you the audience at the festival. An exhibition celebrating the work of Tickhill artist Janet Buckle who has been painting for over fifty years. This show covers the whole of that period, bringing together a large selection of her pictures including work from public and private collections. The subjects range from small intimate still-lives and vibrant flower studies, to large atmospheric paintings of the coal-mining landscape. The show is a challenge for any cast. However, four sell-out performances and a matinee concert for primary schools later, and the message was clear… the young performers at the Elizabethan were up for the challenge!

Reece Chambers, who p played Inspector Javert, has a applied to study Drama at the U University of Birmingham next y year. He said “I want to thank o our Expressive Arts department, m music teachers and family and ffriends for all their help and ssupport, and for believing in me.”

Ambitious, large scale y productions are becoming a key feature in the school calendar, and are providing the perfect showcase for the talented youngsters at the Elizabethan. It is not hard to see why the school was granted ArtsMark status by Arts Council England in 2017. Last week’s production of Les Mis was the culmination of six months’ hard work, although auditions actually took place before the summer. Some of the youngest cast members auditioned whilst still at primary school as part of the school’s ArtsMark scheme which offers talented performers from across Bassetlaw a place at WKH (OL]DEHWKDQ WR EHQHÀW IURP opportunities such as these. Creating a more spacious feel to your home Whether you live in a cottage, a flat, a terrace or a detached property one of the biggest conundrums homeowners face is how to create a more spacious feel within a home. There are obvious choices such as using neutral tones, bringing in lots of natural light and savvy storage solutions which are all great but it’s how you utilise and make all these elements work together to make a small space look and appear more spacious. So here are my easy ways you can achieve a spacious feel to your home. Decorating When decorating a top interior trick is to include painting your skirting boards and door frames in a lighter shade than your walls. This will help to capitalise on the spacious and open feel you are trying to create as the woodwork will blend in with your chosen colour. Flooring Having multiple types of flooring such as carpet, laminate wood or tiled flooring within the different rooms of your home can make rooms appear smaller. Having one type of flooring throughout your home (or as many rooms as possible) allows for a more fluid flow as you move from one room to the next making rooms feel as if they are part of one large space. Flooring choices There are a couple of ways that you can give an illusion of having more space from the type of flooring your select. If you are choosing a wood floor select wider boards, and if you are using tiles select a larger format tile as the fewer grout lines you see the larger and more spacious the room will feel. Arranging your furniture Pushing all your furniture to the edges of your room doesn’t guarantee a larger room, pulling all your furniture away even if it’s just a few centimetres from the wall does indeed create the illusion of being spacious. Try positioning a console table or sofa a few inches away from the wall to make the room feel more open.

Selecting furniture When selecting furniture for a smaller room one tip would be to pick a sofa with legs. This gives the sofa elevation creating a sense of light and space. For a table, a round shape works well as it takes up less space and has no hard corners allowing the harmonious and spacious feel to flow throughout the room. Multiple pieces of smaller furniture will make your room feel cluttered and cramped. Instead, invest in key pieces such as one large couch instead of two sofas. Remember the saying less is more so have a think about the rooms in your home and their functionality and purpose of what the room is intended for to give you inspiration. Mirror Mirror Mirrors are an excellent way to bounce light around the room and can trick the eye into thinking the room space is bigger than it is. Placing a mirror across from a window is the best way as the light can be reflected directly into the room giving the room a much bigger feel. Window treatment To create a spacious feel, try to keep your window covering in the same hue tones as your walls and floor. This will create a seamless look and flow to a room. If you can leave your windows uncovered, this tricks your eyes into thinking your room has depth drawing your eye out into the landscape outdoors. Decorative accessories If you’re lacking on space, having a few treasured decorative items on display is key to not allowing the room to feel less spacious and cluttered. Hopefully, you are now armed with tips and advice on ways you can make a small space within your home look and appear more spacious. Don’t forget to check out our home interiors chic boutique store as well, we can provide you with some perfect home décor. Until next month

Chairs of all TRAs in Bassetlaw have been invited to meet with the Chief Executive of BDC and it was felt that this was to inform them that they still want to see tenant participation, as set up during the time A1 Housing was managing its housing. It was also felt that they would not be receiving any further monetary grants to assist in the running of TRAs. However, our group has always been very proactive in raising funding, but LW ZLOO DÎ? Harworth Colliery Football Club April Update!

Hello and welcome from all at the Football Club for our monthly update as we enter the business end of the season. It’s been a very frustrating month for the senior sides, as the weather has got the better of the majority of the games that the club had been scheduled to play. We hope that this will not hinder our progress for promotion, but, if the poor weather continues and more and more fixtures get crammed in, then peoples work commitments come into play, but everything is still very much in our hands, so lets see what the end of March and April brings. At the time of writing we have four home games scheduled in the next few weeks, a call to arms was asked for in the last magazine and I really hope that the community can get behind us. The Junior side of things continue to grow and we are seeing more and more Colliery badges where ever we go, which is great, but we want those youngsters coming and watching the senior sides. That’s when people will feel part of the club, but that’s the responsibility of the parents to do so. We are a club and people must remember this, everyone wants everything their way. I get inundated with requests for this or that, but it works both ways, don’t always take, you must also give and what we want is your time and support. Anyway, it’s been a very stop start time with very little Football played from our senior sides but the Juniors have seen more fixtures and this side continues to grow. In the next month or so we will again start up the Mini Kickers for ages 4-7, both boys and girls, keep an eye out for updates 20 HARWORTH TODAY

on this. From this, we again hope to introduce a new side next season, but the main objective is for youngsters to enjoy their first experiences of Football, as that is what it’s all about. The Sponsorship continues to come into the club and for this we are all truly thankful. Pictured are the Under 11’s with their new Rain Jackets proudly sponsored by JGD Builders - John Dickinson is a former player and coach at the club so knows what we are all about and has always looked to put back in where possible so thank you. Also pictures are the Under 16’s who have had Tracksuit bottoms Rain Jackets and Sub coats sponsored by One Call Insurance. Nick Springthorpe MD at One Call has arranged this and follows on from their very generous sponsorship of £500 worth of insurance for the Xmas Raffle, many thanks to you again. If any local businesses would like to get involved with the club at any level whether that be Juniors, Seniors, Ladies or just the club in general then do get in touch. Let’s hope for some dry nice and spring like weather, and when I come to write the next article let’s hope we are still in as strong a position as we are now! All the up to date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Many thanks Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@ hotmail.co.uk @jonycw 07979958255 TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Race night at Misson Community Hall was a fantastic night so if you didn’t manage to get there you missed a treat. This venue really lends itself to this kind of event. Big thank you to Liz and Kelvin for organising and everyone else that helped make it a special evening. The final total was £1,538 which was a great achievement. Marks and Spencer will be coming along to the Sanctuary at some point to carry out another Charity day and help us with lots of jobs that we never seem to have time to do. We will be outside the Wheatley Hall Road store every weekend in March with some of our resident dogs (weather permitting). It has been really super getting to know the wonderful staff and having their support. A huge thank you for all you have done for us over the last 2 years, you have all been stars. We have our next sponsored dog walk in Bawtry Forest on the 13th May this is a fantastic morning to walk with you beloved pet and raise money too. We will be selling cakes and hot drinks after your walk to keep those energy levels up. It’s great to see all the dogs interacting and its super for us to see them all with their new owners. Please come and support us. Ball tickets are going fantastically well there are about 3 tables of 8 or 10 left so give me a call if you would like tickets. It is at the Crown Hotel, 3 course meal with drink on arrival, disco, auction with amazing prizes etc. Price is £45. It promises to be a fantastic evening so gents get those dinner jackets out and ladies cocktail/evening wear out, tiara optional!

We are desperate for help with collections outside Pets at Home in Doncaster, so if you have a little time and would like to help please call us. Now on a serious note. We have a lovely little dog with some rather serious issues. At first, we thought she was self-harming, however, after further investigations the vets don’t now think this is the case. She is spinning her body to try and get to her tail (which she doesn’t have). We need a special foster carer for her to live in a home whilst she is still undergoing investigation. We are taking her to Lincoln University behaviourist to try and establish her problem, however it would be lovely for someone to take her home whilst this is ongoing. She is a lovely girl and loves everyone. If you feel you are able to help please leave a message on our answer phone and we will call you back. Many thanks. Please come along to check out our shop in reception, have coffee or just look around we will all be happy to see you. If you are looking for that special pet all of our kennel assistants will be able to discuss which dog or cat will fit in with your family. Our number for Ball tickets Mags 07969 203206 Janice 07590 455340. Our Sanctuary number is 01302 711330. Bye for now

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2018

Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine, and you can access the Council website and the Council Facebook page. Any queries: contact me or other councillors, we will, as always, try to help. North Notts Border School on Shrewsbury Road – Has it Got a Future? Since standing empty the school, now known as the former Serlby Park Academy Primary, KDV VXÎ?HUHG DQ DUVRQ DWWDFN and continuing anti-social behaviour, causing concern to residents living nearby. The Town Council received a letter on 19th February informing us that the owners had applied for a determination as to whether the prior approval of the authority would be required to the method of demolition and any proposed restoration of the redundant buildings. The demolition start date given was 9th April. In response, the Conservation Team at Bassetlaw wrote a detailed report, including a statement from myself, requesting an Article 40 HARWORTH TODAY

4 Direction be granted – this UHDFKHG 3ODQQLQJ 2É?FHUV RQ Wednesday 21st February; the Planning Committee granted an Article 4 Direction on 7th March, giving a 6-month delay to any demolition work. The District Council now has to organise a 6-week consultation period with other relevant authorities/ organisations. The Town Council thought it important to seek the opinion of local people and has led a public consultation exercise: we thought it important that you should have your say. We have organised a simple questionnaire, posters, plus material for our web page, and our thanks go to the schools for KHOSLQJ GLVWULEXWH WKH ČľLHUV WR those community groups who also got involved, and especially to all the local people who take time to express their opinion on the future of the school. Deadline is 18th April. Survey forms available at the Town Hall, or access our website: www.harworth andbircotestowncouncil.org.uk Planning Application 17/01728/ OUT This is an outline planning application to build a total of 650 houses on land between the A631 down to the B6463 Harworth to Tickhill Spital road, plus a full planning application to build 161 houses next to the Persimmon site along the A631 Tickhill to Bawtry Road. This application raised a number of issues for the Town Council, causing us to write to Bassetlaw District Council about: road safety – access onto 60 mph roads a school – the school start-andČ´QLVK WLPH WUDÉ?F ZRXOG PDNH the Tickhill to Bawtry road, and the road to Tickhill Spital, highly dangerous. housing – not appropriate to

build 2.5 storey housing on the site. facilities on site – a play area, and the ‘green wheel` approach around the site for walkers and cyclists is necessary, as with other large sites. HÎ?HFW RI WKH VHZDJH WUHDWPHQW plant close to housing Concern about the impact of housing on the general infrastructure of the whole town was again highlighted by the Town Council. INFRASTRUCTURE ISSUES Roads: having previously written to the new Head of Highways, a meeting on 13th March has been agreed. I want a plan of road improvements for our community. Primary Care Services: after contacting the Head of Primary Care in Bassetlaw about the need for more G.P./other community health services, I understand he will be meeting the Bassetlaw District Council Head of Regeneration and Development, to discuss health care provision for our growing population. Education: I now have every reason to believe the right facilities will become available to meet the needs of our future generations Police: I have contacted Paddy Tipping, pointing out the need IRU PRUH SROLFH RÉ?FHUV LQ Harworth and Bircotes. Severn Trent: you already know I have requested Bassetlaw District Council to seek dialogue with Severn Trent at a high level. What else? I have written to the Leader of Bassetlaw District Council, asking for/and securing support in addressing infrastructure issues; on 8th March a motion on these concerns was put to the District council by your Ward Councillors Dave Challinor and myself; the motion was passed unanimously. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2018 COMMUNITY STARS Thank you, Chris Molson, for cutting back the hedge next to the pavement along the allotments on Bawtry Road. Chris followed up on this work by knocking on my door and asking for the loose hedging to be collected – one phone call – job sorted! Days later I popped into the allotments to thank Chris, and I have never seen the gardens looking so pristine: neat plots carefully prepared, some with regular green net shelters, paths between that are straight and even, everything so colourful, tidy and in good order. Ever heard of ‘men in sheds`? – on this site we have a ‘lady in shed` (it looked brand new to me). $QG WKHQ WKHUH LV &KULVȇV ȆFR΍ HH corner` with a small table and chairs, no doubt used for some well-earned refreshment. The whole site really is a sight for sore eyes. Our allotment holders never fail to impress me – they must be the friendliest, best organised and committed group of horticulturists for miles around! And, In recent months we have seen members of the community out litter picking, and a good job they have done, too, nor are they limited by the ‘who can do what` rules imposed on councils. The last litter pick was on Wright’s Hill, on the grassed verge with no path (normally picked by Bassetlaw District Council) and it must have been tough going. So well done, Keith Hampson and Lynn Allwood, for your commitment to this community, and all those involved in previous sessions.

REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY Fashion Show 6th April, 7.30 pm, at the Town Hall. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council have organised a charity fashion show where you will be able to purchase items from many high street names at without the high street prices. Proceeds will go towards Community Events for this coming year. We also need volunteer models male and

Scuttling those Rumours “Harworth and Bircotes will be known only as Harworth” – what rubbish! Harworth and Bircotes together helped make this town. +DUZRUWK W\SLȴ HV D KLVWRULF farming community, Bircotes evolved as a ‘model` community born out of industry; together this is what makes us unique. We are proud of our history, and our name - the Town Council will never let this change! Comments from the Community Is it just Harworth and Bircotes getting new developments, new housing? No, new houses are appearing right across Bassetlaw. Here are the facts: The Government National Planning Policy Framework requires all Local Authorities to identify and annually update a supply of deliverable sites, which LV VXɝ FLHQW WR SURYLGH \HDUVȇ worth of housing Every Local Authority is set a target by Government; this is the number of houses to be built, per year, for the next 5-year

period Bassetlaw has not met its’ target of 435 new houses per year, therefore has been set a ‘catchup` target of 680 houses – a 5-year total of 3,402 The current Bassetlaw Local Plan shows a wide distribution of sites with ‘permissions` - large and small, urban and rural across the Bassetlaw District; these include Langold, Everton, Worksop (currently the largest number), Shireoaks, Retford, East Markham, Beckingham. For us, the development of Simpson Park in future years will have the greatest impact. The Police Service has taken some stick in recent years. We complain that we seldom see them out on the streets, and about the fact we can’t walk into what is now a closed station. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2018 park - but the geographical area they have to cover has increased. This situation is the result, I am told, of budget cuts so please, GRQȇW EODPH WKH RÉ? FHUV Yes, I have written to Paddy Tipping about providing the DSSURSULDWH QXPEHU RI RÉ? FHUV required for this community becoming even more of an issue because of the increase in size and population of our town, especially as I know he has plans to increase the size of the Police Force in Nottinghamshire. Quad Bikes One day in March I was driving down Bawtry Road at 30 mph when I was overtaken by two quad bikes, each with a driver and passenger; one was towing a large trailer with high sides. They obviously thought the rules of the road didn’t apply to them, and of course they were wearing the regulation balaclavas and combat jackets – their traditional disguise. This blatant disregard of the law and the fact they believe they can tear up parkland and woods and trespass on private land has, in recent years, become more than a nuisance, some quad bikes are used in crime. The Local Community Partnership (Police, Bassetlaw Council, A1 Housing) are working together to address the problem, BUT they need your help – someone knows who these idiots are, and where they store their machines. You can give information anonymously

by ringing Crimestoppers 0800 555111. Remember, not all quad bike owners break the law, but if the community isn’t prepared to help the Police stop those who do, then the problem will continue. UPDATE Planning Application 17/01566/ RES. This is the application from Jones Homes to build 71 dwellings on the colliery site, to the rear of Colliery Road. The original application showed WKH FROOLHU\ JDWHV Č´ [HG RSHQ residents objected, as did the Town council; I am pleased to report that the plans have now been amended and show the gates closed. To Make You Smile It’s a Scam! Most days I pop in to see my Mum for a chat and a cuppa. One day recently her phone rang, I answered it only to hear the familiar patter “Good morning, Ma’am, my name is Sean, how are you today, I am ringing from M****** because of the problems with your computerâ€?; my response was to terminate the call. My mother is 93 years old and has never owned a computer, but I love her normal reply to the “my name is John/Sean/Marieâ€? spiel, which is “and my name is goodbye!â€? Slam.
