Rumours for Hair Welcome to
the APRIL 2014 edition
“You cannot open a book… ...without learning something” Confucius As a child I was an avid reader, Enid Blyton and Noel Streatfeild being 2 of my favourite authors, but first study and then work, and then a young family and other responsibilities reduced my reading time to the extent that the only time I would pick up a book would be on holiday. But a couple of years ago I resolved to give myself a little more ‘me time’ and part of that included reading. A simple pleasure but one which can be incredibly satisfying, and, depending on the choice of literature, totally enriching and potentially life changing. So whatever genre floats your boat this Easter I challenge you to settle down with a cup of tea and a book or two for company. Open your mind and see where a good book can take you, whether it be learning a new skill or hobby, re-visiting a classic from your youth, honing your detective skills with a crime thriller or just a good old ‘chick-lit’ holiday book! The May issues will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 4th April. Apologies for the early closing date, as you probably know I have 3 school aged children and where possible I like to take time off during their school holidays, so this month I have brought the print date forward a week so I am not at my busiest during their holidays – you never know maybe I will find some time for reading too!
Enjoy April and I will back in a months’ time with your May magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

Harworth Colliery Football Club It has been a very busy few months for all of our teams as we begin to play catch up following the awful spell of wet weather. All teams have a good run of games and will need to delve deep into the sqauds as injuries and suspensions normally kick in most at this time of the year. We have had changes within the club with Dan Footitt taking over as Secreatry from Rob Waite, we wish Dan all the very best with what is one of the most important roles at the club, in fact the past few months have seen lots of ups and downs but the club are still striving to achieve promotion but to do this we must get the ground up to standard and the work still to be done is as follows: • Replacing the steel rope with either extending the walls or Scaffold Tube and Clamp • Having a separate entrance onto the pitch for the players from the changing rooms • Building a turnstile • Extending the dugouts and the hard standing around them into the stand
All of this Investment costs money and so fundraising is top of the agenda, one night we do have on the 12th of April in the Welfare Hall is the 70’s/80’s night at just £2.50 a ticket its an absolute steal for what will be a great night, tickets are now at a premium so if interested get in touch ASAP. We will also have our Annual Sportsmans Evening which will be in July. One thing we must not forget though are the Juniors and we are still very light in teams, the Under 16’s have now come to an end and will go into playing senior football from next year so we wish them all the best, this leaves just the Under 12’s and under 13’s, so if any of you readers are interested in running a team then get in touch as the club will support you all the way. Jonno Bownes who plays for the first team will be holding a Football Camp with fully qualified Coaches for ages 6-13. 9am-3pm from 14th – 18th of April. This will be held on the AstroTurf and surrounding pitches and will be a great experience for all involved. Contact jonathanbownes@live. co.uk for more details. As ever keep upto date with all the news and fixtures by visiting our webste, Harworth Colliery F.C. on Pitch Hero also follow us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page.
• Having a seated area with a minimum of 50 seats • Toilet facilities on the ground

• Most importantly getting the floodlights up to the standard that the league requires

Growing Old
A frightening number of patients are told by health professionals that having to slow down is part of growing older and they are going to have to start putting up with aches and pains. Yet this needn’t be the case. Of course we cannot stop the body from growing older and there will be changes that are part of the normal ageing process. Bones become less dense, muscle strength and flexibility is reduced and there will be evidence of joint ‘wear and tear’. A reduced metabolism may lead to weight gain which in turn exacerbates these problems. The great news is that numerous pieces of research indicate that you can help yourself enormously by combating these changes with physical activity. Regular physical activity will help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce the loss of bone density, strengthen muscles and keep joints flexible. Exercise also means a healthy heart and good circulation with the added benefits of an enhanced mood and a good nights sleep. As with most things, there may be glitches associated with increasing your physical activity – either problems getting started or obstacles to overcome along the way. Physiotherapy can help. Physiotherapists can carry out a musculoskeletal assessment in order to offer you specific and expert advice on exercising and achieving good physical condition. Pain and stiffness associated with common complaints like arthritis, neck and back pain can be treated in order to help you achieve your goals.

False Labelin In the last article I wrote with the shopping basket I looked at a solution for food waste. In this one I highlight some issues to do with food labelling and local reliability. After the Horsemeat hoo-hah in the Autumn you would think that food manufacturers would have got their house in order, but it seems to be far from the case. The Guardian published some findings from a laboratory in West Yorkshire (8th February). Food testing is the responsibility of local authorities Trading Standards departments. Their findings are alarming. One third of the food they tested was mislabelled. The headline horrors included a herbal slimming tea which was neither herb nor tea, but glucose with an obesity prescription drug, that had been withdrawn due to sideeffects, at 13 times the normal dose, fruit juices containing EU-banned additives, cheese with very little cheese in it, beef mince with pork and poultry in it and the worst, to my mind was a Vodka (not my drink) made from a substance used as an industrial solvent and also found in antifreeze. I bet that would go to your head, and everywhere else besides. The Guardian article didn’t name names, but you can bet your bottom dollar that much of this is in ready-meals produced for sale in supermarkets, where with lots of additional flavouring cheap chicken can be substituted for more expensive ingredients. No horsemeat has appeared in recent tests but plenty of meats are of the wrong species. 12
So try this locally. Do the analysis test. I did in a Tickhill butchers. I asked for the recipe for their pies. They looked at me as if I was going batty, and gently explained to me that there isn’t a recipe. Beef and potato pie, is beef and potato with some seasoning, and the pastry is flour, butter, lard and water. That’s it. With the cuts from central Government many councils have reduced their checks. ‘Which’, the consumer watchdog, claimed that 10% of councils did not check that food was correctly labelled. The only way to be sure that you are eating good quality meals full of wholesome ingredients is to buy the ingredients locally or directly from the business doing the cooking. We are lucky in this area, we have a huge amount of choice. Pies are made in house, sausages are made in house, bread and cakes are produced locally and some fruit and veg can be sourced from local growers. This is not simply the domain of people with a good income. If you visit the blog of Jack Monroe http:// agirlcalledjack.com You will find recipes for meals which cost very little. She, Jack Monroe was a single mum to a toddler when she lost her job with the Fire and Rescue Service and went from earning a very good salary to scraping by on benefits. She
HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY
documented her struggles to feed herself and her son on just £10 a week on her blog, along with ingenious and delicious recipes that cost only pennies a portion. The Guardian began featuring her recipes, and she has since become an outspoken voice in the national media calling attention to food poverty in the UK, as well as continuing to write about budget cooking. Her first recipe book, ‘A Girl Called Jack: 100 Delicious Budget Recipes’ has just been published. The Food Programme on Radio 4 (Sunday 2nd March) focused on Butchers’ Shops. They are apparently doing well across the Country seemingly in the wake of the Horsemeat scandal. They are a meeting place, with lots of banter, chat and advice, and the product is often very locally reared, well hung and reliable. Our local butchers will be able to tell you who raised the beef they are serving. And likewise our fishmongers know the provenance of their fish.

A Christian Tradition Dear Friends, Just opposite the manse in which I live is the Sprotbrough Country Club. As I look out from my office window on a sunny but cold February morning, what stick in the air are a few palm branches from two trees outside the pub. These remind me of Palm Sunday, a Christian tradition. A week before Easter, Christians celebrate Palm Sunday - the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. In other words a week before Jesus’ death and resurrection, he had a ‘red carpet’ treatment as he entered Jerusalem. The Bible states that people from all walks of life raised palm branches and laid some on Jesus’ path (with some clothes) as he rode on a donkey whiles they shouted ‘Hosanna’ meaning ‘save now’ (Matthew 21: 6-9). Red carpet treatment is rampant these days especially at almost every award ceremony or VIP visits. Some of us seem to think that the people we adore and sometimes we worship have some form of salvation for us as we treat them special.
I wonder what needs saving in your life, home, work, school, community or family this lent and Easter season? I’m not reminding you that it’s time to do away with chocolate or coffee again. This may sound great but it takes more than that to instill self-control in our generation. Acknowledging Jesus as Saviour, as the people in Bible times did, is a step in the right direction as we ask for his help in our dealings in this world. Interestingly, salvation is free and one only needs to open up and ask for it. On the other hand, because it’s very simple, many people find it too good to be true. But just to reassure you that it’s not a hype to ask for it. It’ll do your soul good. However, if you still want to know more or need some help, kindly contact a church near you or this writer on 01302857952 or frank.okai-sam@ methodist.org.uk It is my prayer the good Lord will keep in you perfect peace as you celebrate Lent and Easter in a special way this year. God bless.

Climbing the Walls
If your garden is short on space, rammed with plants, or you simply have an unsightly vertical surface to cover, climbing plants can be used to great effect: from clothing frameworks such as pergolas and arches to hiding sheds and even neighbours! Whether it’s as fast growing as a Triffid, a dainty floral twiner, or an evergreen clinger, I’m certain there’s a climber out there for you, it’s just a case of meeting your perfect match. For those of you lucky enough to have a south-facing doorway, why not spoil yourself with the highly scented fragrance of Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). Not only is it evergreen, but it boasts the added benefit of a claret-red leaf colour in autumn. For those with a north-facing entrance, how about a plant combo starting with an early flowering Clematis tolerant of shade, such as ‘Frances Rivis’, followed by the stunning pink flowers of Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’, perfect in shade with the added bonus of being a thornless variety. If it’s a shady spot and a fast growing evergreen you require you really can’t beat Ivy, but I understand many people are not huge fans, so why not put in the extra effort and seek out a great alternative known as Pileostegia viburnoides. It’s a bit of a mouthful but not only is it evergreen, it will

provide white flowers in summer and like Ivy is a self clinger, but nowhere near as vigorous. As well as the other common examples, such as Wisteria (only plant this in full sun and if you are prepared to tie it in and prune it twice annually), Honeysuckle and Pyracantha (great for deterring intruders due to its woody thorns), there is a whole range of other shrubs which can be grown against a wall or fence, not forgetting trees of course, such as the beautiful trained fruit trees we often see in Victorian walled gardens. Shrubs planted at around 30cm away from the base of the wall or fence can be manually tied in and make excellent wall cover, often with the added benefit of flowers. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ for example, or Garrya elliptica make unusual evergreen wall coverings, and look great with a second flowering climber twining through. Don’t forget the huge variety of annuals available which you can grow from seed, such as Sweet Peas, Morning Glory, or maybe try climbing French beans as an edible wall covering? Do ensure that you provide sturdy wires for plants to travel up. The best and most cost-effective way is simply to fix vine eyes (spaced horizontally around 2m apart) to the fence or wall and vertically at 30cm intervals. Then use a taught

GreenThumb celebrate their 10 Year Anniversary This year GreenThumb Doncaster West are celebrating their 10 year anniversary. Lee and Jayne started GreenThumb Doncaster West franchise back in March 2004. They had seen the impressive results of the GreenThumb treatment at a relatives garden in Cheshire. After making enquiries they found there wasn’t a branch where they lived in Doncaster and so ended up buying a franchise. Ten years on they are still here and now employ 4 lawn treatment operatives and treat over 3000 lawns in and around the Doncaster area. They have built their business on giving good customer service and carrying out the work in a professional manner. This has worked extremely well and they still get many new customers each year from the recommendations of their existing customers. Lee says “We know that the GreenThumb treatments work well and give good results, however we always say it is a partnership between us and the customer – we can apply the treatments but it is then down to the customer to look after their lawn with regular cutting (not too short!) and watering if the weather is dry”.

From the Priority Setting Meeting held on January 8th 2014 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. Thefts from Vehicle We have seen a slight reduction in thefts from vehicle over the last month in the Harworth area but we would still strongly urge people to ensure that they do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be for Sat Navs, small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is would you please ensure that you ALWAYS lock your vehicles and double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked. There have also been a number of thefts of catalytic convertors from vehicles in the area these have been from residential addresses. We would ask that you bear this in mind when parking your vehicle in order to try and make it as difficult as possible for someone to be able to remove the catalytic convertor from it. T 20
Burglaries and Shed Breaks There has also been a reduction in burglary dwellings and burglary other (sheds, garages etc) over the last month. Although this is a good sign we would ask that people remain vigilant especially as we approach Spring and begin to start work in your gardens again. This has typically been the time of year shed breaks in the area begin to increase. If anyone requires security advice please contact your local PCSO as we do have leaflets we can supply which contain information on security. As usual we are asking people to secure belongings which are stored inside sheds as much as possible and also to have a good quality padlock fitted. To further enhance security we would ask people to consider security lighting close to their sheds in particular the door area. Also to ensure that nothing is visible from outside for example if you have a shed with a window maybe think about putting a curtain or sheet up that will cover this so the contents are not on display. Shed alarms are also something to consider and if you require any further information please make contact with your local PCSO T

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2014 2014/15: A NEW FINANCIAL YEAR April 1st signals the start of the new financial year; at the end of February/beginning of March, councils set and agree their budgets to support their services for the coming year. You are all aware of the Government cuts to council grants and the financial pressures this puts councils under as a consequence; you may not know that in the last two years 9 councils have got into difficulties and have been placed into the ‘transitional assistance’ category by Government.
6th March was Budget Night
owned Queens’s Building, which means the remaining floors will be reorganised to accommodate Council staff, adopting an open-plan model. I can also tell you that Bassetlaw recognises it will have to downsize, and this process is well under way for staff (so far this has been through voluntary early retirement/voluntary redundancy), for senior management, and for the reorganisation of directorates and services.
Budget for Harworth and Bircotes Town Council
for Bassetlaw District Council. As Cabinet Member for Finance – not the simplest job - I presented the budget for 2014/15. The facts are:
services and employ more staff e.g. not all parish councils have a cemetery – we will soon be using two; very few operate public toilets, and having a Community Information Centre that provides access to other services is, we believe, an essential service for the people of Harworth and Bircotes. This next financial year sees a reduction in grants to parish councils; for Harworth and Bircotes this means almost £45,000 less income. Fortunately, your Town Council anticipated this effect of the downturn in the economy and planned their budget accordingly, and some efficiencies will be made. Interestingly, about 50% of parish councils in Bassetlaw have raised their precept; the remainder have either kept them the same as last year, or even lowered them. What have we done here? – kept the precept the same and avoided any increase.
A New Supermarket
2014/15: this next financial year Bassetlaw District Council has to operate with £920,000 less money. B.D.C. also has to find, in the same year, a further £1.45m – this in readiness for April 2015/16.
At last the company have confirmed they intend to start building in May 2014; I hope this news stops all the rumours that have been circulating.
All parish/town councils receive grants from District; these grants form part of their income, along We estimate that by 2017/18 Bassetlaw will have to make a total with their precepts. Harworth and Bircotes receives the largest of £4.5m in savings because of funding cuts – a huge amount for a amount of grants, due to the fact that we have by far the biggest small District council. population, run many more How will B.D.C. find this money? I don’t yet know all the answers, but already Bassetlaw is sharing services with other councils, and Notts County Council hopefully will be sharing other resources e.g. the Department Bassetlaw District Council for Works and Pensions in Worksop is moving into the A1 Housing ground floor of the Council-

Council Tax Bassetlaw District Council has taken the decision to raise Council Tax this next financial year by 1.5%. What does this mean for local residents? For anyone living in a Band A property this means a total increase for the year of £1.53, or 3p a week. Those in a Band D property have an increase of £2.29 for the year, or 4p per week. What happens to the Council Tax? Well, Bassetlaw acts as the collecting agent; most of the money goes to County Council, and some to the Police and Fire Service; the remainder is used by District to support services to the public, such as refuse collection, environmental services, licensing, planning etc.
Letter From The Public
I received a very complimentary letter from a lady, praising the work this Council has done in recent years. However, she did raise the issue of no banking facilities. I totally agree with her, and my best efforts to raise interest in establishing a bank in our Town have so far failed. It doesn’t help when you read, on an almost monthly basis, some of the difficulties banks have got into, especially at the investment end of their business. It seems we have little chance of persuading some banking mogul to open a small branch here, given the bigger problems they seem to be facing. This doesn’t mean I will stop trying!
A Special Thank You... To all those who use the Town Hall every Wednesday and Thursday. March 20th saw the Blood Transfusion Service using the Main Hall, which meant the cancellation of the Brass Band session and the Bingo; sometimes this falls on Wednesday, which means the Zumba class is cancelled. Many of you will know that an appeal for blood went out the previous weekend because stocks had fallen so low for two blood groups, and operations were in danger of being cancelled. I have been asked a number of questions about the Blood Transfusion Service… Why Thursdays? The Blood Transfusion Service book one year in advance, and every year our Deputy Clerk, Helen, asks them to avoid Thursday, if possible – it isn’t always possible, so this year two sessions will be on Wednesday and the remaining two sessions on Thursday. Why do they use the Main Hall instead of another room? The answer is that: a. The size, in order to safely accommodate the number of donors b.Health and Safety:-you do not handle body fluids in areas that are carpeted, especially on the scale of the Blood Transfusion Service. Why does Council charge? We charge for the hire of the Hall to cover the cost of utilities, wear and tear, and the deep clean we have to carry out. The Blood Transfusion Service, who use our Hall from midday to 8.30pm, is part of the NHS, it has a budget for the hire of accommodation, and all Parish/Town Councils do make a charge… here we offer a high standard of facilities and our
DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3600 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk
charges are less than some other local venues. I should add that the Blood Transfusion Service are very satisfied with the service they get from us. So to all our regular Wednesday and Thursday users of the Hall, thank you for making a small sacrifice for the greater good of many others.
C.C.T.V. Following enquiries from Councillor Brian Letherland about the lack of any appearance of C.C.T.V. in our community, Bassetlaw District Council has explained that the issue regarding the transmission of a signal back to the control room in Worksop has now been resolved. The District Council has to work with the supplier; we understand that a scheme has been approved and the order placed, and Bassetlaw is trying to now get the supplier to agree a new installation date.
Bike Ride: Saturday 14Th June In conjunction with Dinnington Cycling Club this will be the date of the Tom Simpson Retro Ride, followed the next day by the Tom Simpson Memorial Race; the latter is an event Dinnington have promoted for many years and which is part of the GB National Junior Road series. Both days will be filmed by Yorkshire Television. Retro Rides are, it seems, new to Britain, and held for cyclists riding pre-1987 bikes and wearing copies of old team kit; the plan is to limit the field to 500 for this first year. The Town Hall will be the temporary H.Q. offering a number of activities, including film of Tom Simpson during the day.

Horses Several people have approached me about horses, and particularly the mess they leave behind. You may be surprised to learn there is no legislation about horses, unlike dog fouling….. I have no idea why, unless it has something to do with horses existing on an entirely vegetarian diet, unlike dogs. I have checked with Environmental Health and they are trying to find out more.
Congratulations... To Bircotes-born Mick Brennan, for being selected and competing in the Paralympic Winter Games at Sochi. Mick came 10th in the world, is the best in Britain for downhill skiing, and has set the standard for other paralympians to follow.
Councillor Frank Hart District Councillor Frank Hart is stepping down in May from civic duties after many years in public office. Many of you know Frank and his wife Eileen, and a good number of you have been helped by him in the past. We wish him well for the future and hope he and Eileen have a great time during retirement.
To Make You Smile When working as a midwife I once spent the night with a family in Doncaster; the mother was in slow labour and I didn’t want to leave her and then later be called out in the middle of the night. The father was a miner on strike, it was winter, there was no coal and the house was cold, so I suggested everyone went to bed and I would rest on the family settee until needed. I woke up early hours to find the family Labrador had climbed up onto the couch and had snuggled up beside me, keeping me warm! A healthy baby boy was born later that morning, but after that experience I made sure I always had a bag of coal in the boot of my car.
