Welcome to the April 2015 edition

April already, and Easter is nearly upon us. Two thirds of the way through the school year and exams are once again looming, only a month to go now, until formal exams start. Two children in my household will be taking exams this year, one doing AS levels and another doing GCSE’s. That also means 2 separate exam results days to look forward to in August! Good luck to everyone reading this with exams on the horizon. We enjoyed celebrating Today Publication’s 10th anniversary during March, and as part of this I stepped outside of my comfort zone and agreed to be a guest on Andrew Isaac’s ‘Doncaster is Great’ radio show on SineFM. A podcast of the hour long show which went out on 18th March may still be available on the SineFM website should anybody wish to have a listen! A kitchen update for you. My new kitchen is due to be delivered the same day as the pallets with these magazines on, by which time the old one will hopefully have been removed. After hours of research, all of my shiny new appliances are also due on various days of the same week. So the fun is about to begin! It is possible that we will be spotted making full use of our range of local restaurants and takeaways over the next few weeks, until the new kitchen is fully operational. More details next month!

The Group met for their meeting on 3 March 2015. Chair announced that BATRA’s Den had awarded the Boxing Club in Harworth/Bircotes a sum of £3000, to help in the running of the club. This was the first amount of money to be paid out to any group in our Town, since BATRA’s Den had been operating. The group were very distressed to hear of a member discovering the burnt bodies of two foxes. RSPCA were investigating. Another member warned all pet owners to be aware that someone is putting down poison, possibly on contaminated dog chews, and this is resulting in severe haemorrhaging. It is hard to imagine who could commit such dreadful acts. Do be vigilant when walking your dogs.

There were discussions about the solar panels which were being installed on some of the bungalows in the town, by contractors for A1 Housing, and also the warden alarm systems which are being installed in some bungalows. Members were informed that the next meeting would be the AGM when existing committee members stand down and a new committee is elected, but if no one comes forward to stand for election then the existing committee can be re-elected. The AGM will be held on Tuesday 7 April, at 10.30 am in the Devonshire Road Centre. As always everyone is welcome to attend, refreshments are served, and a raffle usually takes place.

Harworth Colliery Football Club April Update Hello and welcome all of you to the latest update from Harworth Colliery. Over the past month or so there has been so much happening and also as the run into the close of the season is upon us the Club has a lot to look forward to. At the time of writing nearly all of our clubs go into the final stretch of the season with a chance of winning some silverware, which is some acheivement for a club of our size. The 1st team over the past few months have had a brief spell at the top of the table but really through virtue of playing more games then our competitors but have settled now into the Top 6 which the club will be more than happy with given the awful start we had. We are though still in two cup Competitions, one of which is the Final of the Northern section of the Floodlit Cup, this will be played at our Home Ground on the 14th of April 19:30 Kick off V Title contenders Clay Cross Town. We would really appreciate a large home following to back the lads so hope as many from the Village can make it as we hope to progress to the Overall Final against the Southern Section winners.

been sown up at Home on the 15th of March but after kicking in all game lost 2-1 to Title challengers Moorends who had two shots all game, but that’s Football! The Lads really deserve it and thats not being biased, the type of Football and how they have approached each game has been a pleasure, lets hope the next article we show you them with the League. Our Under 14’s ripped up all the Form books after beating Ordsall Rangers in the Under 14’s Challenge Cup 2-1, not only were they from a league above but had been unbeaten all season, they know face another Premier Divison side in the Final Scawthorpe Scorpions. Date to be arranged, same attitude and approach and you will be just fine. Other good news on the Juniors front is that Adam King will be taking an Under 8’s team next season, he has already started training on a Saturday morning on the Astroturf at 11am and will be looking to get a team together over the next few months ready for next year, if you have a child under 8 and interested then please get in touch. On a Fundraising front we have organsied another 70’s/8o’s DISCO night at the Welfare on the 18th of April, tickets £3 and Fancy Dress will be TV/Film/Music Themed, last years night was a rip roaring success so please get behind us. All the up to date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page, keep turning up through the gates as it is hugely appreciated by everyone associated with the club.

Photo sees Gregg Archer, Tommy Durrant and Matty Bradley receiving the award for the Central Midlands League Club of the Month from Chairman John Cornthwaite The Reserves after also suffering an awful start are in contention of the League and Cup. The new manager Mark Latham has recently taken his Level two Coaching badges and is also working with the Junior teams, we wish him and the team luck and lets hope they can find the consistency and a good run of form and you never know, the fact they are in the running at all is testamanet to the hard work done both on and off the field. The Colts too are turning into a bit of a cup team, they have reached the Doncaster and District Challenge Cup Final and through to the Semi’s of the Division One KO Cup, it will be an uphill task but we love to play the part of an underdog and will be ready to give it all. Please keep an eye on the Website and Social Media Pages for dates of these as they are both played at neutral venues. Onto our Juniors and what a few weeks it has been, at the time of writing the Under 13’s need just a point from our last game to secure the League Title, we all hoped it would have 6

Mattersey Primary School: In Search of the Fallen Over the last year, the staff and children at Mattersey Primary have been following the progress of our caretaker, Pete Cox, who has been searching for the fallen local lads who fell during the first World War. Pete and a group of like minded friends have travelled across Europe and other places to visit each grave of those named on our local Retford/Mattersey war memorials.

At school, we have been most interested in finding out about the soldiers who came from Mattersey. Up until quite recently one man, Edgar Glasby, was proving to be pretty elusive. In recent weeks, an accidental discovery enabled Pete to locate this soldier, who turned out to be buried in the cemetery in Mattersey – just up the road from the school! The children were very excited to be told of this discovery and were invited by Pete to visit the grave with him to pay their respects. As well as visiting the grave, the children helped to clean the headstone and to lay crosses in remembrance. They noticed that some of the lettering had worn away and were quite dismayed by this. We would be most interested in finding out more about Mr Glasby and in particular we would like to make contact with his family. If you know him as a relative, please contact the school on 01777 817265 and ask to speak to Mrs Patton (Head Teacher). It is hoped that we might be able to restore the headstone and would appreciate support from the local community to enable this. If you are able to help – please contact the school on the telephone number above…… World Book day 2015 Last week we celebrated World Book Day in the usual manner of dressing up as book characters. Every child in school joined in, as did all of the staff. A fun day was had by all… T

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, There is a story of a black South African woman who stood in an emotionally charged courtroom listening to white police officers acknowledge the atrocities they had perpetrated in the name of apartheid. Officer van de Broek accepted that he was guilty for the death of her son. He and his police friends had shot her eighteen-year-old son at point-blank range. They partied while they burned his body, turning it over on the fire until it was ashes. Eight years later, this same policeman and his friends arrived to seize her husband. Hours later, van de Broek came to fetch the woman. He took her to a woodpile where her husband lay bound. She was forced to watch as they poured petrol over his body and ignited the flames that consumed his body. The last words her husband said were “Forgive them.” As van de Broek stood awaiting judgement, the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked the woman what she wanted. The woman stated, “Mr. van de Broek took all my family away from me, and I still have a lot of love to give. Twice a month, I would like for him to come to the ghetto and spend a day with me so I can be a mother to him.” That was not all. She added, “I would like Mr. van de Broek to know that he is forgiven by God and that I forgive him, too. I would like someone to lead me to where he is seated so I can embrace him and he can know my forgiveness is real.” As the elderly woman was led across the courtroom, van de Broek fainted. The story of Good Friday rings a bell in this story. Jesus was tortured and crucified amongst two thieves. Whiles dying on the cross, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23: 34). I wonder who has offended you and how you’re dealing with the situation. Yes, humanly speaking, you want to break even with the person but what happens afterwards may be devastating. Other people would want to keep the hurt in themselves and bear the brunt of anger and hatred. That is not the spirit of the Easter season. At Easter, Christians believe that God in the form of his Son Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead after the third day. Through that we are liberated from sin and all its clutches. We are forgiven when we confess and repent from our shortcomings. We can therefore come to God and ask him to help us forgive those who have offended us. We can also ask him to help us ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. As you celebrate Easter, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider reconciling with people who have offended you in the past so that you may have the peace you need in your life. Have a blessed Easter season.

managers job in the village to try and get my life back and stop the anxiety taking over my life, but the damage was already done and I would have to muster up e. confidence just to leave the house.

My name is Neil Paczkowski I have lived in the village all my 32 years, I will be taking part in this year’s London Marathon representing and raising money for ‘The Mental Health Foundation’. I’ve been training 4 times most weeks since September last year, be it in wind, rain or snow so it’s not been easy (especially the frosty snowy mornings we had in January), the hard work is still to be done with these next few weeks leading up to the event. Judging from the feedback there’s quite a few people I know who have seen me on my travels running to Doncaster and back or around the village, and that feedback has mostly been positive, the rest think I’m mad for doing it! My reasons for putting my body through this are 1) to raise as much money for ‘The Mental Health Foundation’ (my target is £3000) 2) raise awareness of mental health and how common it is (1 in 4 people will experience some form mental health disorder at some point in their lives) 3) the challenge 4) the experience of running in our capital city seeing all the major landmarks.... But my 5th and final reason for doing this is........... I have and still suffer from a mental health disorder. Over the last 6 years I have suffered from periods of depression and an anxiety disorder which has been present nearly every day but differs from mild symptoms to severe with no real warning except the change in my behaviour or train of thought which can affect my social life and work life. The mild symptoms I can just about control in public and will go unnoticed by friends or family. For friends and family who might be reading this it will be the first time I have mentioned it so it will come as a big shock to most of them, some may have seen changes in my behaviour deteriorate these last 6 years. It all started when I got a job working away at potash mine near Whitby which meant I worked long unsociable hours away from home. My routine of going out with friends every weekend was nearly no more. It affected me more than I thought at the time, this coincided with an injury which stopped me from playing football for 3 years. No football and no drinking with friends, 2 of the things I loved doing were shut out from my routine. Over them 3 years working away and not playing football, my confidence and self esteem started to deteriorate and the anxiety levels grew intense, so I got a new job near home and football 20

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

I know people will be reading this and thinking “Patch the joker, the mischievous lad at parties or in the changing room lacking confidence?” The truth is I was drinking quick and hard when I was out to calm the anxiety and give me ‘confidence’. Every other social situation I had to plan in advance over and over in my mind to avoid any awkward moments I was scared of encountering, which were all a negative thought process I had made up in my mind. It wasn’t till 2 years ago I decided enough was enough and went to the doctors to seek help, I went on a course of medication and on a cognitive behavioural course in Worksop to help me. I stopped the medication after a month and I bluffed the therapy making out it wasn’t required and quit the course after just 2 months. I felt I had the character in myself to get through it on my own. I was wrong because the anxiety would always still be there in some form or other so last year I decided to see the doctor again, who suggested medication and to make some changes in my life. So I decided to cut down my drinking, stop smoking and stop putting myself into so many situations which would trigger my anxiety. This is when I looked at the London marathon to give my mind something positive to focus on as well as to do something I have always wanted to do. So it was a no brainer to approach the mental health foundation for a place on their team and raise money for a charity I could relate to. Currently I still suffer from bouts of anxiety but nothing compared to what I did 2-3 years ago. The changes I have made have had a positive impact along with the support and understanding from my loving girlfriend (who was the only person I told) who has been brilliant since day one. The reason I have used this outlet to go public with this and not facebook or face to face is because I felt I didn’t want to come across like I was attention seeking, instead I felt if I put it in here, people would find this article if they were interested in my story. I hope it gets a positive reaction and those that read this who are suffering from some form of mental health disorder don’t feel they are on their own and that there are others out there too. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope I’ve educated a few people about mental health. Regards Neil If you would like to donate please follow the link below and fill out the necessary information and the money will go directly to the charity http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/NeilPatch T

garden view

Garden Projects... ...GO! “April is a great month for a garden project “ April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.

Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.

Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.

By Rachel Leverton

Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.

Quad Bikes in the area We continue to receive incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem that seems to have increased again over recent weeks/months and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely 26

We continue to offer free property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. News from the courts over the past few months A male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has been remanded in custody until June 2015 to appear at Nottingham Crown Court for a trial in relation to witness intimidation and perverting the course of justice. A Male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has been sentenced to five years in prison for Burglary in neighbouring forces. A Female from the Harworth and Bircotes area pleaded guilty to three shop thefts at the Asda Store Harworth in November 2014 was sentenced to 10 weeks imprisonment. 2 Males have been charged with Witness intimidation and Section 4 public order in relation to an incident in Harworth and Bircotes in March 2015. A female also involved in the incident has been charged with criminal damage and section 4 public order. All 3 are due to appear in court in June 2015.

Anti Social Speeding Vehicles Throughout January and February 2015 In January 2015, the neighbourhood policing team have seized 3 off road bikes and a quad bike that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area. All four vehicles have been subsequently be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal. At the recent Priority Setting meeting the issue of speeding vehicles has been raised as one of the three main priorities in the area. From speaking to several of the residents in the Harworth and Bircotes area over the past few months, the issue of speeding vehicles continues to be a big concern along with drivers using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts. The concerns from the residents are that the general driving standards and inconsiderate driving from all age groups of motorists is on the increase – not just in Harworth and Bircotes but in other areas too. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has been working with local schools between January and march 2015 where the local beat team has been working with pupils from the school on active speed detection work in the area. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place In January to March 2015 there have been 5 days of speed detection work with the schools, approximately 1300 vehicles have been monitored with around 10 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit.

‘Making a difference locally.’ Over the past couple of years I have put together an occasional article on shopping, with a bent towards supporting small local suppliers. My interest is all about maintaining local sustainability and diversity, and keeping here that which is special and particular. This article looks at NISA, the acronym stands for National Independent Supermarkets Association but when it began in 1976 the ‘N’ was for Northern, and its beginnings were very local. The first meeting of the two directors was in the Millstone in Tickhill in 1976. Peter Gavin was a director in a wholesale grocery company in Rotherham and Dudley Ramsden a retailer from Grimsby. They were introduced by a rep for Nestle because they both wanted a cheaper way to buy in bulk and so be able to offer goods at a competitive price to their customers. For 11 years, they ran the NISA business from a meeting room in the Crown Hotel in Bawtry. At its beginning there were 30 retailers turning over £20 million annually. Grocery retailing has always been driven by volume. Buyers would arrive at the Crown to negotiate costs. Orders were handled directly from the retailers and deliveries went directly from the producer to the shop. NISA handled all the paperwork and invoicing, at this stage NISA didn’t touch the goods, it had no warehouse, it just negotiated, ordered and invoiced. NISA is a unique member owned organisation, helping independent retailers remain competitive in the food and drink markets. NISA is now based in Scunthorpe, where there is a strong trading team and the support services that retailers need. The Scunthorpe Central Office was opened by Princess Anne in 1990, along with grocery central warehouse and distribution facility. This stocks 12,000 products, including 3,000 chilled and frozen lines. Today NISA represents over 1134 registered shareholders operating over 2,500 stores, including 270 former Costcutter retailers, worth over £100 million who joined the group in 2012. NISA does not own any stores itself. All their shareholders retain their independent status. They benefit from the group’s products and services whilst maintaining full control of their stores. Nisa recently announced that it had appointed former Tesco and Aldi director, Nick Read, as its new chief executive. We tend to take for granted long established organisations, now very much a central part of Tickhill’s townscape, Taylors of Tickhill is a NISA store, and was involved with NISA from its beginning. Taylors business grew from modest beginnings - Os and Bessie Taylor together with their two small boys, a family with no capital, took over the lease on a beer-off in 1946. The building, the right hand side of the present property, was a condemned 3 storey slum with no mod cons. A butchers shop occupied the 28

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

left hand side. Mappins and then Stones Brewery owned the building and some repairs were made, the top floor removed, and only when fit for habitation did the family move into the property, but for many years the toilet was down the yard, the family living in the shop, on the ground and first floors.

T

Both Os and Bessie were born in Tickhill. At 14 years old, Os worked at Firbeck Colliery yard taking the wagon numbers, and was later a porter at Tickhill Station. His mode of transport was a push bike, and he would cycle out to Westwoodside for a 6.30 am start to load celery into wagons there. Coincidentally, Bessie’s father had been the licensee of the Millstone pub 1930s which is where NISA was conceived Os and Bessie took over the lease in 1946, but Os continued to work on the railways for another two years before he felt that Taylors had built up enough to join Bessie in the business. The first days takings, as recorded in their ledger was £1. 10s. ( £1.50). The hours were long and late, as it is with the alcohol trade. They had been in business ten years when they took the opportunity to buy the premises that Taylors of Tickhill now occupies. They knocked the two shops into one, and in 1962 introduced the very new self–service method of shopping. When we moved to this area in 1991 Os and Bessie were still very much present in the store, Bessie on the till adding up in her head faster than the till itself.

T

Roy joined the business 1956. When Peter Gavin met Dudley Ramsden in the Millstone in 1976, Roy was chairman of Gavin’s wholesale business (which was called Escafeld ). Taylors was one of the first stores to be part of NISA. In 1981 Christopher joined the business, and regular shoppers will know this as a family business with Celia and Julie also very much present. The member-owned status of NISA means the member always benefits, particularly through the day-to-day trading terms and surplus profits that are reinvested back into the company. NISA’s turnover is £1 ½ Billion, enormous as this sounds it represents only 2% of the UK grocery market. Aldi owns 5% of the UK market. Every three weeks NISA launches a new raft of offers, discounts, BOGOFFs are launched with about 300 product changes on promotions. Incidentally this takes one day to set up on the Taylor’s computers in order for the till to know what is going on and the customer to reap the benefit.

T

In 2008 ‘The Making A Difference Locally’ charity was launched assisting more than 2,000 retailers in donating money to local charities and good causes in their communities –Taylors of Tickhill have donated £3,450 in Tickhill and NISA has distributed £6.5million nationally. Incidentally Ramsden’s family supermarket in Grimsby has recently celebrated 70 years in business, and Taylors will be doing the same next year. A while ago I ran into a friend as I came out of Taylors, he said ‘We can’t afford to shop there’, my reply was ‘ I can’t afford not to’.
