Be Sure of a Warm Welcome!

The Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Group held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 7 March. At this meeting Mrs E Prime, Head of Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, and said that her department dealt with such things as Refuse Collection, Environmental Health, Recycling, dog fouling, bulk items collection, etc. Sheealth, listened to the Group’s concerns regarding dog fouling, fly-tipping, needs for more skips, and other issues. It was a lively meeting as it was obvious members and many other residents felt very strongly that there was a need for something to be done to combat these issues. These have been highlighted recently in the national press and on television, so it is not only here that there is a problem. However, members felt that more could be done to encourage residents to act more responsibly. Photographs were produced and examples mentioned, and Mrs Prime promised to take on board our comments and consider what could be done, although she could not promise to solve all the issues. The Group thanked Mrs Prime for attending the meeting. Members voted on some proposed outings to take place during the forthcoming year, and these included a trip to the Houses of

4

HARWORTH TODAY

Parliament, a riverboat trip with meal, Christmas markets, pantomime, trip to Scarborough, a visit to Millhouse, Harrogate, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and possible local theatre visits. There was also a discussion regarding the amount of new buildings being built in the town, and concerns were expressed about the state of the drains and the sewers, which are already unable to cope with demand. This is being addressed by Bassetlaw District Council in talks with Severn Trent Water, as part of the work on the Strategic Intervention Plan currently being worked on by BDC and the Town Council. The committee and guests have been invited to an Awards Evening at Retford Town Hall, as they have been nominated for an award for the work they do in the community. The next meeting to be held on Tuesday 4 April, is the Annual General Meeting, when the committee stand down and members are invited to elect a new committee. Anyone interested in standing for office should make themselves known to an existing committee member ahead of the meeting. This will be held at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome to attend. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Arts Review & what’s going on - April 2017 •

Maureen Fisher

The show of the month has to be at the Djanogly Art Gallery where Winifred Nicholson’s joyous exhibition of nearly 100 works graces the 3 galleries. She was Ben Nicholson’s first wife, before he ran off with Barbara Hepworth, (he left her before their third child was born), and she managed to continue as an artist whilst raising 3 children, producing new and fresh work until her death in her 80s. She is an important figure in art and in feminism, a renowned colourist with a marvellous touch; her work is often delicate and ephemeral. Her real skill was knowing when to stop, her works are never over-worked and tired, and that is a real skill. The poet Kathleen Raine, said on a BBC programme about Winifred, that “flowers were an occasion for painting light”. The exhibition is excellent, and the café there makes a trip to Nottingham a pleasant one. Djanogly Art Gallery, until 4 June ‘ Winifred Nicholson - Liberation of Colour’ - a major retrospective of the artist’s work in this most convivial of gallery spaces. Well worth a visit. Also ‘Sarah Key -Worlds all at Sea’ a drawing show in the same gallery. http://www. lakesidearts.org.uk/ Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sun Exhibition: 8th April – 2nd July ‘ Grunts and Grapples’ this exhibition profiles the golden age of British Wrestling from the 1950s until the 1990s. Wrestling was a central part of British national life in this period with iconic figures such as Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy appearing 8

in hundreds of UK town halls and theatres night after night as well as featuring on TV. The exhibition explores how the showmanship of wrestling drew on earlier traditions of public entertainment such as music hall and circus and how this informed the development of the cast of characters, storylines and audience participation unique to the sport. Life drawing: 8 April 11-1pm and 2 - 4pm Art History Lecture: Friday 7th April 10.30 am: ‘Renoir’s Portraits’ The great impressionist painter Auguste Renoir is perhaps best known for his paintings of voluptuous nudes and social gatherings, but he was also a prolific painting of portraits, from intimate images of his family to formal commissions. £5 www.doncaster.gov.uk/ museums Village Ventures I fell over a booklet of events for this wonderful live and local organisation, which is now run by someone in Derbyshire rather than Notts county council… their publicity seems sparse, and the website non-functional… but they are still there and doing it, even though we have missed many months’ worth of shows… Saturday 22 April 6.30pm ‘Opera Dudes – Licensed to Trill’ I have seen these two clowns ( I use the word loosely) and they are great fun and sing of course too… Everton Village Hall 01777 817395 www.villageventures.org.uk Art at the Deli: April exhibition ‘The Owl Lady’: Maureen Fisher solo exhibition www. artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck from 14 April to 11 June ‘First Rain -Warli Painting’ These are stunning paintings from India, filled with an intense and detailed patterning. I first saw these works in the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green about 18 months ago, so am assuming it’s the same work and that they are on a UK tour. SCHOOL VISIT FROM NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY Year 8 students had the opportunity to work with representatives from Nottingham University this month, who came to the school to help them prepare for their GCSE options. The introduction of new, more rigorous GCSEs makes starting options in Year 9 rather than Year 10 options even more critical. Afternoon sessions invited students to consider the sort of characteristics, skills and qualities that linked well with a variety of options subjects and focused on the importance of keeping options open in the future. A good number of parents braved Storm Doris after school to attend a further session on supporting students with their choices. The session also focused on the benefits of a university education, funding and bursaries.n

IN EARLY JANUARY, staff, students and their families celebrated in style at the Elizabethan Awards evening. The event was timed to coincide with university holidays, allowing ex-Year 13s to return to collect their awards and share their stories of life at university.

Faculty Leaders, Heads of House and the Senior Leadership Team paid tribute to the students through citations, speaking highly of their positive, determined and caring attitudes and how their dedication and hard work had paid off. Leonie Leeder won The Headteacher’s Award for Unique and Distinctive Achievement. Leonie, whose GCSE results were the best in Bassetlaw in 2014, went on to achieve another set of excellent grades at A-Level, earning her a place at prestigious St Andrews University in Scotland to study History. Chair of Governors, Dr Derek Cheetham, congratulated students on their awards. He also paid tribute to the staff of the Elizabethan for their hard work and professionalism again this year. n

West Side Glory THE ELIZABETHAN ACADEMY’S production of West Side Story hit the stage at the start of March. This ambitious production was made all the more challenging by the staging, with actors performing to the audience seated on both sides of the stage. For some, it was their first time in a

leading role, yet their exuberance, enthusiasm and talent shone through.

The production was greeted by rapturous applause on each of its four nights, with many audience members unconnected with the school contacting us afterwards to pass on their appreciation to the cast. n

RANSITION EVENTS PUPILS FROM YEAR 3 TO YEAR 6 have been at the Elizabethan recently for a range of exciting transition events.

For Years 5 and 6, this has focused on our production of West Side Story, with students learning songs and dance routines from the show, as well as producing graffiti art and views of the Manhattan skyline. There are certainly some talented performers in our primaries, and with our Artsmark Auditions due to be launched at the Open Evening in

April, competition is likely to be stiff. The Year 3 and 4 project was based around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It had a distinctly healthy feel to it too, with students making their own healthy meals, planting their own spinach and testing various foods to see what they contained. They were particularly shocked at the amount of sugar in some of their fizzy drinks! n

LIERY SURGERY OF THE TICKHILL AND COL rol of your health and healthcare.) (Aiming to help you, to be in cont NHS England Health Campaign Continuing with The NHS ‘KnowOur Numbers’ campaign and helping ourselves stay well. This month we look at the last two numbers, Blood Glucose and Cholesterol Levels. Several studies have shown that people can lower their blood glucose level and therefore the risk of becoming diabetic, by losing weight and/or taking exercise and thus avoid medication. The NHS Doncaster 5 year plan has identified diabetes as one of the risks to the health of Doncaster Residents with 7.7% of adults living with a diagnosis of diabetes. This compares with 2.2% of people who are living with a diagnosis of cancer, 3.8% of people who are living with a diagnosis of Coronary Heart Disease and 2.6 of people are living with a diagnosis of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) These figures sit alongside the following statistics for Doncaster residents that show that 74.4% of adults are overweight or obese and 33.6% are physically inactive. The Diabetes website says that walking, gardening and housework are good examples of recommended moderate-intensity activities that help retain physical function, build strength, and expend calories. It states that exercising most days for just a short time, albeit important, is in many ways less critical than what individuals do during the rest of the day. For elderly adults, simply increasing their spontaneous physical activity rather than just sitting, will bestow innumerable health benefits, including preventing the loss of muscle mass, reductions in mobility, and the onset of frailty. Safety considerations. Safety is an issue as well. Safety concerns may preclude someone from walking who has a high risk for falls and subsequent fracture. Options may include exercising while seated. The same benefits of losing weight eating healthily and taking exercise apply to controlling your cholesterol levels at a healthy level and so cutting your risk of stroke or heart disease. However there’s also an inherited condition called familial hypercholesterolaemia, which can cause high cholesterol levels even in someone who eats healthily.

From ‘The Practice’ A GP Registrar is coming to finalise her GP training by working part time with ‘The Practice’ for the next 2 years. She is Dr. Xhemali. Working at the surgery, are 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners who between them are offering 36 appointments a day each day over the 2 sites. Plus an extra nurse 14 HARWORTH TODAY

is being employed 1day a week to do dressings. These changes are resulting in an increase in the number of appointments available every day for patients. The GPs all work full time in terms of hours worked but to accommodate late night and Saturday morning surgeries, no one GP is available for all the opening hours of the Practice. Therefore the number of GP appointments vary from day to day whilst still trying to meet the days of heaviest demand for appointments. The actual numbers of appointments available each day are:Monday 180, Tuesday 126, Wednesday 108, Thursday 108, Friday 162. Sat / late night 19 A total of 703 appointments per week. The Practice asks for support from ALL patients in helping them meet the Doncaster NHS CCG targets for becoming digital and electronic:• Please ask your preferred Chemist about ordering your repeat prescription through them, rather than directly through the surgery. This will save GPs, office staff and receptionists valuable time. You will still get your medication as before from the pharmacy. • Please let the surgery know of all changes to your telephone numbers (mobile and landline), address and email address. • When patients attend for appointments they will be asked to sign to consent to their summary care record regarding, sensitivities and allergies, repeat medications and acute episodes being visible to the out of hours service, hospitals and other medical professionals working with patients. The AGM of The Patient Participation Group will be held on Wednesday May 24th 2017 at 6.15pm in Tickhill. All patients are eligible to attend and to vote. Four places on the committee will be up for election. All patients are eligible to stand and can self nominate. Forms will be available from either reception area from 24th April and should be returned by May 4th to reception or the the PPG chairperson or secretary.

Harworth Colliery Football Club April 2017! Hello and welcome to the Football Club monthly update, the first for a few months following a quiet period for the club with a number of postponements and cancellations as is usually the case through February and March. We have only one place to start and that’s with the Ladies Team, newly formed this season they have gone onto to win the Division 3 of the Sheffield and Hallamshire womens league. Winning every game bar one which was a draw so have gone the season undefeated in the league. A great acheivement from all concerned. We are very hopeful to grow the Ladies section next year with a Reserves/Development team and also a Girls Junior side, I think this shows as a club how we are looking to move forward and we are very proud of what has been achieved this season and the future looks very bright.

and upwards and this goes for all our sides, we want all our Juniors to enjoy thier Football anything else is a bonus, Adam King has recently taken over the running of the Juniors and so we wish him well and again look for further growth in this Area.

The 1st team have a had a quiet few months from the number of games point of view but a very disapointing one, since the turn of the year results have been very poor and have seen us drop out of the promotion chase. We will now have to evaluate where things have fallen down and use the next 6 weeks or so to build for next season. In years gone by our position in the league would be the norm but the investment in our facilities and our attitude towards promotion and progression means this season will be viewed as a failure and one that we will certainly be having a long hard look at.

We are very proud to again have the Wilson Ellis Band and special Guests playing the Welfare Hall on Good Friday for the Robert Needham Memorial Concert, tickets just £5 and all monies raised being split between three charities, all details on Facebook.

The reserves and the Under 21’s have also seen a number of games cancelled given the wet weather at the back end of winter, this part of the club though is going to be a vital given what is written above about the first team, we must look to get better, younger players interested and buying into the club. Ones with character and heart, some players we have brought in in the past have been technically good but lack the requirements needed to progress, we want lads to push themselves and push us as a club so again this section of the club is going to be looked at as we must get this right moving forward. Onto the Juniors and its been great to see so many new teams and new players coming into the club, an Under 7’s have started up run by Dean and Amy Ellis which are now taking part in the Spring League. We have had 88 players register to our teams this season, nearly treble what we have had previously. Big congratulations to Paul Coward and Neil Canning on gaining Promotion with the newly formed under 13’s a great acheievment in their first season so onwards 16 HARWORTH TODAY

Mini Soccer has also started up on a Saturday Morning, and its for all minis who want to get involved in playing and enjoying Football, its just £2.50 with Food and Drink in the Pavilion, 4-6 Year Olds 9:30-10:30am, 6-9 Year Olds 10:30-11:30, perfect for your children to come up and enjoy.

A big thank you to a couple of new sponsors, one being our very own Today Publications, many thanks Paula for your Support, and Hannicks a local firm off the Brunel Estate, many thanks. Community Hello from Mayflower

We all welcome the light mornings and evenings together with the spring flowers starting to burst out, spring is just around the corner. It will be kitten time soon and we are already taking names of people wanting kittens, which is a good thing. So if you are wanting a kitten rather than an older cat just let us know. We do however have the most adorable cats some indoor and some that can be let out once they are aware of their surroundings. I love cats and could easily become a cat hoarder if my husband didn’t keep an eye on me. We have 3 at the moment and a stray that lives in our garage in an evening. I am not sure where it goes during the day, but at least I know it’s warm and fed in an evening. I do however keep well out of its way as it is not the friendliest cat, I have been spat at more than once, even with cat food in my hand, so I just leave it in its own little world. We have nearly come to the end of our Charity of the Year for M & S Wheatley Hall Rd, which we are all really sad about. We would like to thank both the customers that have been very generous also the M & S Team for putting up with us and making us very welcome. We have been bag packing and bucket collecting for the past year and everyone has been brilliant. When we have a final total for the year I will let you know. We have recently arranged a Race Night in Misson, this was a huge success and raised over £2000. Liz and Kelvin organised it with

Sara doing food and the rest of us chipping in where we could. It was such a fun evening and the compare was terrific, so a good night was had by all. We have lots of older dogs in the Sanctuary that just need loving homes for their last years. Most won’t need walking miles a day they just need to have someone to care for them in a loving home environment. If you think you can give an older dog a home please come to see us. We have beautiful dogs in our Sanctuary, even though our kennel assistants care for them well, it isn’t the same as having a warm snuggly blanket in your forever home. All our kennel assistants know about each dog in their care, so if you require further help and information on any particular dog just ask. Don’t forget we have a lovely pet shop in our reception area, there are lovely beds, collars, toys in fact everything that your dog or cat needs, we will look forward to seeing you. If you would like to volunteer to dog walk or fundraise or if you have any fundraising ideas of your own please let us know. If you need any other details on our procedure and opening times please give us a call 01302 711330 we will be happy to help. Looking forward to seeing you soon

My owners are moving to different houses and can’t take me with them. I have taken everything in my stride so far and my carer says that I’m simply a treasure to have around. I just love everybody and I’m always happy to play a game or simply be fussed. It’s nice here but it’s not like home. All I want is a family to call my own again. Is that too much for me to ask? In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make me wait too long.

Patrick I have had to come into care because my family have moved into a flat and I was unable to go with them. You see it is on the second floor and as such I wouldn’t be able to have access to the outside. My family understand that I’m used to being able to explore the garden so would be very unhappy being confined to the house. An independent soul who knows what he wants. I’m very lovable but please don’t expect me to be a ‘cuddle/lap cat’ I’m happy to weave around your legs though and love to be fussed. If you’re looking for an undemanding companion, then look no further cos here I am.

EVERTON VILLAGE PLAYERS

“Licensed to Trill” Cabaret in Everton A subsidy from Nottinghamshire Village enables Everton Village Players to host a cabaret show featuring top professional performers: The Opera Dudes. On 22nd April in Everton Village Hall this popular duo will be presenting a show called “Licenced to Trill”. Although the entertainers are two trained operatic tenors, who have performed at top international venues including Covent Garden, the President’s Palace in Malta, Villa Carlotta in Lake Como and various theatres in Manhattan, the show is not exactly grand opera. It’s more Il Divo meets Morecambe and Wise! Blending opera, swing, show songs and good clean ‘Carry On’ fun, this unique double act is outrageously brilliant and a whole lot entertaining. You can see more information about the Opera Dudes on their web site: http://www.operadudes.com/ Doors will open at 6:30pm and we will be serving a hot meal at 6:45 to start things off. A sweet course will be served in the interval. There will be a licensed bar serving quality wines, beers and soft drinks. Easter brings new life!

Dear Friends, The Easter season is here. Some of you may be wondering what the retailers have on their sleeves to ‘woo’ you into their shops during the Easter season. Interestingly, one of the products that has become popular on shelves at Easter is the ‘Easter Egg’. I wonder whether it is because many people talk about new life. The egg represents new life. I have therefore decided to consider the concept of the egg in relation to new life in God at Easter. Just a little bit of science may help. The natural egg has four basic parts – the shell, air cell, albumen and the yolk. The Shell supports the structure of the egg and is the first line of defence against bacteria. The air cell, the space between the egg shell and the egg white, provides the chick with air when it is ready to start breathing on its own and hatch from the egg. The albumen (egg white) has four alternating thick and thin layers. These layers are made up of fluids and gels that are used to support and centre the yolk. It also contains nutrients. The yolk produces the embryo and it is a food source for the embryo. I wonder how we experience and express God’s protection, support, and nourishment as a people who have new life from the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. The bible indicates God’s protection for those who love God, know God, and trust in him. Since Christians do not seem immune to accident and death, how are we to understand God’s protection? Another point is that I wonder what steps you or your local community take to protect those who come to you, including ‘strangers’. God comes to live in you by his spirit when you believe in him. God also supports you by giving you gifts and talents. I wonder whether you know your gifts and talents and whether you are using them to help humankind. I also wonder how you support others to appropriate their gifts and talents to help their families and society at large. 24 HARWORTH TODAY

As a Christian, I believe that God nourishes his people as they study, fellowship, break bread and pray together (Acts 4: 32 – 37). Secondly, personal study of the scriptures and prayer help individuals grow too. I wonder if I can remind you that each person needs to grow physically, spiritually and emotionally. So, whatever your faith or believes are, I wonder how you nourish your soul and how often do you do it. The newly hatched chick needs air to survive. Easter brings new life so we need God’s Spirit to fill us and give us spiritual air to live afresh. Breathing also involve exhaling. In Christian circles, exhaling involves confession of sins to God and to one another. I wonder how you deal with sin in your life. Is it a matter of, “I don’t care” or that of guilt? If it’s the “I don’t care’ attitude, I wonder how you get along with people and your own conscience. If it is guilt, I wonder how you deal with it – sulk, hate yourself, or confess and move on. What about those who have ‘wronged’ you? Are you prepared to forgive them or you’re the type who never forgive? Just to remind you that, ‘to forgive is divine’. I also wonder if I can remind you that there are many individuals and agencies that can help you deal with guilt, unforgiveness, and / or resentment. I am always reminded that the egg can only produce a chick through fertilisation. Hence, it is only through intimacy (being close) with God that will yield a new you! Have a blessed Easter season. Yours sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam

Fuchsia Perfect I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental. They are named after a 16th Century German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. In mild areas or at the seaside they can grow into huge shrubs. Elsewhere hard frosts see off most of the top growth in winter, then new shoots burst up from the soil in the spring, maturing into small shrubs about 2-3 feet / 60-100cm tall. At this time of year rooted cuttings are cheap. Grow them on for a few weeks under cover, changing the pot to a slightly larger one as they grow, then plant them out in May. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Make sure you pinch out the shoot tips frequently. It delays the flowers a little but they will become bushy little plants which produce more flowers in the long-run. Once they are mature you can more or less leave them to it. Simply sprinkle a handful or two of fertiliser around them in the spring and again in the summer. There are lots of lovely varieties. “Mrs. Popple” is tall with red and 26 HARWORTH TODAY

purple flowers. “Mrs. W. P. Wood” is paler with pearly flowers. I have a soft spot for “Whiteknight’s Pearl” which is a beautiful pale pink. If you have a smaller plot try “Tom Thumb” or “Alice Hoffman”. It’s a little known fact that the berries and inner petals of fuchsias are edible (though it’s worth noting that ‘edible’ doesn’t mean they necessarily taste good!). However there is now a variety bred especially for eating. It’s called “Berry” and produces fruit with a flavour something like a sweet fig. The fuchsia berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They don’t have a long shelf life so pick them when they are soft and squishy and eat them fresh, or freeze small quantities as you collect them, until you have enough to make fuchsia jam or add to muffins, much as you might add blueberries. School children mark Ash Wednesday Thirty school children joined the congregation for the Ash Wednesday service at All Saints, Harworth, which was led by Bishop Paul Williams. The children, from the Church of England Academy in the town, were accompanied by their Head teacher and two teachers. Along with the congregation, the children took part in an Ash Wednesday tradition when they received the Sign of the Cross made with ashes – Bishop Paul spoke to the congregation on the theme of ‘repentance’ describing it as a change of direction that reconnects us to the love of Jesus and his guiding presence in every circumstance of life. Bishop Paul said: “I was delighted to join the people of Harworth for their Ash Wednesday communion service to mark the beginning of Lent. It was inspiring to be joined by such an engaging group of children from the school as well as people of all ages from across the parish.” We are still in vacancy (interregnum) and all our services are currently being covered by visiting clergy this includes, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. The Diocese has now advertised nationally on our behalf and will keep you informed of any news. (We are not expecting a new incumbent to join us before the summer months. The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. Weapons and equipment were seized and the offenders were reported for summons to court to answer as to their actions An application will be made to the magistrates for the forfeiture of the weapons and other items. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2017 News from A1 Last month A1 sent out a progress update to all District Councillors. The report detailed where in Bassetlaw different types of work and home improvements are in progress, such as new roofs, kitchen improvements plus home adaptations such as ramps and grab rails. Westmorland House in Bircotes has had work done following a Fire Risk Assessment, including a sprinkler system and upgraded social alarm system, plus new bin storage units and a main door entrance canopy. I never realised that A1 also had to install Lightening Protection on blocks of flats – common sense, really. Evictions: One section reported on evictions, which are usually preceded by a Court Order; on occasions assistance from the Police is required. Once the property is vacant, A1 officers enter the property to empty the building and assess if/what repairs are needed before the property can be re-allocated: this can sometimes be quite a grim task, and not a job I would welcome. A1 also included details of a Pod, which had been designed, constructed and specially adapted to meet the needs of a family in Bassetlaw whose child has severe disabilities. The photos showed the Pod being lifted by a crane over the house roof and then lowered into the back garden, where it was skilfully attached to the main dwelling. I was surprised to read that the company, iHUS, are now based on the Plumtree Industrial Estate, having relocated from Bentley; good news for that family, and good news for our growing business development in Harworth and Bircotes You’re Never Too Young to Learn 2 Shires Community Bank is a notfor-profit bank that exists to benefit the community. Their staff tell me that currently they are enjoying spending time in All Saints Primary School, Harworth, teaching the children about managing money responsibly - what a good idea! 2 Shires can help people with a debt problem by giving advice on 34 HARWORTH TODAY

how to manage and reduce that debt; they will also give you a loan with very low interest rates, so that you can pay a lump sum off the debt, thereby decreasing your repayments by reducing the interest you pay back to a loan company. • Borrow £300 from a loan company – pay back £600 • Borrow £300 from 2 Shires – pay back £340. Or, you can simply avoid using a loan company, and instead approach 2 Shires. You can also open a savings account, putting in whatever you can afford, whenever you wish, and withdraw it at any time – Christmas? Holidays? Contact details: Email: info@2shires. org.uk or ring 01909 500575 Council Tax 17/18 Bassetlaw District Council is raising Council Tax by 1.9%. For a Band D property, this equates to £3.05 per year, or 6p per week. In Bassetlaw, Band A properties form 51% of all properties, and their Council Tax will increase by £2.03 per year, or 4p per week. What happens to your Council Tax? Government takes 50%, B.D.C. keeps 40%, Notts. County Council receive 9% and the remaining 1% goes to the Fire Service. Other authorities also apply their own separate precept (or levy) that appears on your total Council Tax bill: Nottinghamshire County Council are raising Council Tax by 1.75% plus 3% extra to pay for social care; like many other county councils and

unitary councils they have been given government permission to do this. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue have increased their precept by 1.9% or £1.44 for a Band D property, Nottinghamshire Police have also gone for 1.9%. Harworth and Bircotes Town Council are in the fortunate position that, because the Council Tax Base (number of properties) has grown, they could set a precept of 3.5% increase knowing that residents will in fact be paying slightly less than last year. Fly Tipping Since April 2016 Bassetlaw District Council has received 1,773 reports of fly tipping; most of this has been cleared in-year; B.D.C. does not clear up on private land. The cost of clearance is £100,000 per annum – this is tax-payer’s money – your money – that is spent. There are several fly tipping hot spots in Bassetlaw, I am ashamed to say Harworth and Bircotes is one of them. Recently, I approached B.D.C. about the land behind the Wimpey Estate that runs parallel with Snipe Park Wood. Harworth and Bircotes Town Council wanted to clear the scrub, seed the area, and keep it mown – this to increase visibility and deter fly tippers who dump their rubbish here. We offered to do this under licence on behalf of B.D.C. who had no objections. Then along came the Wildlife Trust officer, who objected because the area is a natural habitat for small creatures, insects and flora… so permission denied. Recently someone was reported for fly

ships for over 20 years, where he gained his knowledge of different countries, people and cultures.

And who is dumping rubbish on the Notts. County-owned land behind Festival Avenue? H&B has collected three blue bags left there, but why dump pieces of metal, wood or start fires? What happened to community pride? Please, report anyone fly tipping – hitting their pocket is the effective way of stopping them.

Back in England, he used his expertise to manage hotels and bars; whilst running the bar at a golf club he became addicted to the sport, playing all over Britain, even taking golfing holidays. Settling back in Harworth, he expanded his hobbies and became an expert angler; he often takes his lovely wife Jackie to France to fish for specimen carp – I suspect he also enjoys French wine!

Update Bircotes Leisure Centre Gym Refurbishment: improvement works are due to be completed in April; Planning Permission Granted for Commercial Development: site north of Blyth roundabouts, near junction 34, between the A1M and Blyth Road. The site will offer 900 jobs when in full use. Junction 34 Improvement: The work carried out on the A614 and B6463 Blyth Road junction is a £1.55m project, designed to improve the flow of traffic and road safety. Blyth Road should be open from 13th April – look out for traffic lights. New Street Naming: the houses being built on the site where the Institute once stood will be on Serlby Park Drive, apart from a few facing onto Whitehouse Road. The new, wider access road to the school will be a continuation of Swinnow Road. Councillor Corner This month I turn my attention to Councillor Steve Ashworth, who was born in Harworth at the family home of Grange Farm, Old Harworth. Leaving school, he worked first at the Airfix Shoe Factory then Harworth Glass Bulbs before becoming a self-employed driving instructor – no doubt some of you remember being taught to drive by Steve. Next came a total career change and he entered the licensing trade, working at Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor. His knowledge of bar work served him well as he then opted to sail around the globe on cruise

Despite his wanderlust, Steve has always viewed Harworth and Bircotes as home. He is a ‘doer’, always able to present ideas to Council, always willing to go and walk the patch. He wants our community to be a safe place for children to grow, to be somewhere special where all residents can be proud to live, and he is therefore very interested in the future development of our Town. To Make You Smile Inspecting a recently vacated council house, the A1 officer noticed amongst the rubbish left behind what he thought was a child’s toy – until it moved slightly. It was a live reptile called a bearded dragon, but because the house was so cold the warm-blooded creature had ‘shut down’. The creature was taken back to A1 Headquarters to warm up and after a few hours it started to move about. The good news is that later that day the A1 officer took the creature to a vet, who felt that it had come close to death, BUT it survived, was adopted, and is now living a happy family life. A1 included a photograph of the bearded dragon, which I have looked at closely … don’t tell me all dinosaurs are dead, this little dragon came straight out of Jurassic Park!
