Welcome to the

August 2017 edition

“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.“ Anthony J. D’Angelo The summer holidays already! This is the ďŹ rst year that one of my children doesn’t have the long 6 week break, and won’t be joining us on our family holiday this summer, but instead has made his own arrangements for a break. It will be odd going without him, but we will be making the most of still having two wanting to holiday with Mum and Dad, although I suspect that we won’t see that much of them! August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a dierent routine which takes them to dierent shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the time too). Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 18th August. As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Enjoy the summer, and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine.

Best wishes,

ALL SAINT’S CHURCH, HARWORTH – serving Harworth & Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley MINERS STAINED GLASS WINDOW I can report that it is all systems go, we have at last been given the go ahead. It has been a long and frustrating journey at times. Now we can look forward to completion. The window has been measured by the specialists so work has begun. The format of the design was done by Graeme Willson, a stained glass window artist from Ilkley. Thank you Graeme a job well done. I would also like to thank Kath Pencott for her input into the image of the miners, Kath’s husband Ron worked at Harworth Colliery for several years. My input was to make sure the details were correct. I only hope that together we have come up with a picture you all like. I have been informed by the specialists that completion date should be around December ȴ QJHUV FURVVHG I would like to thank all the people who have supported me and helped me to raise the PRQH\ WR SD\ IRU WKH ZLQGRZ e An inspiration I had eighteen months ago will now happen thanks to the mining community a tribute to all the miners who worked at Harworth Colliery that will be seen in the FKXUFK IRU FHQWXULHV QHYHU WR EH IRUJRWWHQ Great Community, great people. & what’s going on - August 2017 •

until 9th September Doncaster Art Club Annual Exhibition. The club’s annual exhibition, including landscapes, portraits and still lives in a wide variety of media. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Howard Hodgkin

Summer is here, lots of listings have closed down for this period – but there is still plenty on, and not least a visit to the Museum of the Year, just up the road in Wakefield. Congratulations to the eversplendid Hepworth on nailing the big prize (lots of money). We look forward to seeing what comes next. Something appears to be on the cards in Doncaster www.doncaster.gov.uk/iconicbuild with a possible new cultural HQ next to the new Council Offices and round the corner from CAST. It’s a bold looking building and in these straightened times, we know what economic good new galleries can do for a town, let alone all the cultural value and self-esteem that they carry. The Central library in the town centre has long looked past its best, and to incorporate the old school, is a great idea, though it looks a bit of an awkward marriage from the artists impression. It’s such a relief that Doncaster isn’t knocking down another wonderful building, but grabbing an opportunity by the horns. The new building is due to open in Spring 2020. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sun Exhibition: until 9 September ‘Podules’ by Jan Niedojadlo These gigantic sculptures are often, though not exclusively, inspired by natural and biological forms. Uniquely, visitors are encouraged to enter the sculptures, to fully immerse themselves within these distinct ‘other worlds’ and experience the sights, sounds and smells within. Niedojadlo describes his work as ‘art to viewed on your back - and not just with eyes and brain - but experienced with your whole body’. Until 2nd September ‘XP School Art Exhibition: Are we Really Free to Choose?’ Over the summer Doncaster Museum will be displaying around 50 paintings created by year 9 students at the XP School in Doncaster. The students have created artwork in a Pop Art style to answer the question ‘are we really free to choose?’ 8

The Hub in Retford until 19 August Jo Thorpe exhibition. Jo’s work is made in a variety of techniques and the show includes paintings, drawings and prints with lots of colour. Open Monday to Saturday 10 – 4pm at 11 Churchgate Retford…. Look out for the big Carrot! www.retfordhub.org Art at the Deli: Rose Firth painter and printmaker. She writes ‘I am inspired mostly by the natural things from my garden. I love experimenting with different printmaking techniques, but I also love to paint. In these paintings I was trying to convey the delicacy and translucent quality of fabric and am always drawn to pattern and colour.’ www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 20 August ‘Open Exhibition’. Until 29 October in the adjacent gallery space ‘Dinosaurs of China’ which is an interactive exhibition running in two venues – also at Wollaton Hall, Nottingham. You will see work which has never been outside of Asia previously featuring 150 million year old fossils and full size dinosaur skeletons, revealing how dinosaurs evolved into birds. www.dinosaursofchina.co.uk with many workshops to accompany. www. lakesidearts.org.uk Cast in Doncaster outside of CAST on Saturday 12 August 12-5pm is ‘Balby-bythe –Sea’ Woodfield Club, Balby www.castindoncaster.com

Hepworth Wakefield until 8 October ‘Howard Hodgkin: Painting India.’ Hodgkin died in May, just days before his exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery opened. He was a splendid colourist, with expressive brush strokes and strange physical spaces in his canvases, which are partly pictorial and sometimes entirely abstract. I remember being arrested by one of his paintings whilst visiting the Tate as a child. He had almost painted out the whole picture with a thick cream coloured layer, it was quite a lesson in clearing out the unwanted in a picture. This show is a bit of an odd one, lots of food for thought and plenty to discuss, and the Hepworth – Museum of the Year- is always worth a visit . www.hepworthwakefield.org Sheffield Theatres following on from last month’s palaeontological themes 21 -23 August in the Lyceum ‘Dinosaur World’ described as an interactive new show for all the family. Mayflowers fund raising projects are getting well under way this year and so far the weather is being kind to us. The Scrufts Dog Show in July was a beautiful day and a huge success, it was lovely to see all the dogs that we have rehomed with their new families. Big thank you to all volunteers and everyone that attended. We are holding a LADIES night on the 11th August to be held in reception at Mayflower starting at 7pm. There will be a representative, Jess from Freedom Aloe Vera products. There will be a beautiful candle Company stall, Finishing Touches will bring along handbags, scarves, jewellery and much more. Please come along for a fun evening including coffee/tea and cake. There will be a raffle and great prizes. We are asking that if you would like tickets they are £3.00 per person. Or just come along and pay on the door, but please call the sanctuary 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 to let us know you are coming. It will just give us a rough idea how many people we are catering for on the night. Table Top sale is on the 16th Sept at the Scout Headquarters in Tickhill, there are a few tables left and the charge will be £12 per table. Please call Janice if you would like to reserve one. 07590 455340. Tracy one of our senior kennel carers thought up a brilliant idea to raise sponsorship. She lived in a kennel for 24 hours, she even dressed up like one of our canine friends. They had great fun, it went out on all of the local radio stations and she stayed in a kennel all day and all night.

Finding a forever home She was probably stir crazy by the time she was let out! But she raised lots of money which is the most important thing. Just a quick few lines about the procedure you will have to go through if you would like to adopt one of our dogs at the Sanctuary. It is always an idea to go and visit your chosen dog a couple of times before eventually taking them home. You will have to have a home check, one of our volunteers will come and check that you have a 5ft fence and your garden is fully secure. We also need to know that your chosen dog will be living inside with you and not living outside in a kennel day and night. Our volunteer will also have a chat to make sure you have chosen the correct dog for your lifestyle. If all is well the following Saturday you will then have to attend an induction talk by one of our experienced dog listeners, which most people find fascinating and very interesting. Have a great summer but don’t forget to keep your furry friends cool on hot days with access to plenty of water. If you would like any further information on any of the above please call me 07969 203206. If you would like further information regarding our adoption process please call 01302 711330. Bye for now

Margaret Godley Have a great summer

Honeysuckle I know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground DQG JURZ VORZO\ XSZDUGV XQWLO WKH\ Âż QG something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks RU WUHHV GHFRUDWLQJ WKHP ZLWK VSLGHU\ Ă€ RZHUV and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up its toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think DERXW WKH IRUHVW Ă€ RRU ZKHUH LW JURZV ZLOG $QG LW OLNHV LWV KHDG LQ WKH VXQ WR HQFRXUDJH SUROLÂż F Ă€ RZHULQJ I grow it like clematis - I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to over the cool shade they require. BEWARE DOOR TO DOOR SELLERS/POSTAL SCAMS, EMAIL AND INTERNET FRAUD. There have been several reports of bogus door to door sellers which have been targeting elderly residents. In one particular incident a large amount of money was paid for work which was never completed, we strongly advise residents not to be pressurised into paying any money upfront to any person/company until the work has been completed. There has also been a report of a postal scam whereby a postal service request has been sent requesting cash for an undelivered item or package which does not exist. They have been asking for money to be sent to other European countries such as Hungary/Romania. Nottinghamshire Police are advising residents to be vigilant as no company/ organisation would request cash to be posted. This recent postal scam has also been seen on the internet in email format stating an undelivered parcel/package is being held at a depot and payment is required to receive the parcel/package. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - AUGUST 2017 A Bench for Brian Councillor Brian Letherland was an ex-soldier and supporter of the Royal British Legion. Following his death, his wife Joyce, his family and friends collectively purchased a bench, now installed and complete with a small brass plate next to the village green, and near to the cenotaph. What is special about this bench, apart from being indestructible, are the two white plaques at either end, each bearing a red poppy – highly appropriate for an old soldier. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - AUGUST 2017 Sewage Treatment Centre, Tickhill Road, is also an issue. When the temperature rises, the smell of sewage makes life unpleasant for residents nearby. When John left school, he went to agricultural college ‘down south`, and then spent time working on farms in Australia; his claim to fame is that he drove all the way round Australia, via Ayers Rock, in a ÂŁ500 van (he doesn’t say how many times it broke down!) Apart from farming, he is involved in general maintenance, snow clearance, winter gritting and recovering abandoned cars. His lovely wife Fiona is no slacker, either, as she runs a dog grooming business from the farm as well as caring for their two children. John joined the Council almost two years ago because he wanted to make a positive contribution to the community, to see it thrive and become more prosperous. He is particularly interested in the Neighbourhood Plan and the aim to protect green spaces and deliver new leisure resources. Top of his wish list? A children’s play area in Old Harworth, and designated dog walking areas. To Make You Smile: Dirty Laundry When our bungalow was being built, Barry and I were reliant on friends and family for access to everyday facilities that normally we all take for granted. Dear Friends, This month, the part of the Lord’s prayer we will look at states:

“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heavenâ€?. I believe that in order to pray this prayer one needs to know the will of God on earth. I also believe that God’s will is to help people know him. God also wants people to relate with him as children relate with their parents. He wants us to obey his way and surrender our lives to him through his son Jesus. This implies living according to his commands. Praying for God’s will to be done also involves placing into God’s hands the struggles we HQFRXQWHU LQ RXU OLYHV ΖW PD\ EH D Č´ QDQFLDO decision, a relationship that is troubling us, or a responsibility that we have. It is a way of committing our lives to God. Praying for the will of God to be done in and through our lives on earth, as it is in heaven, can also mean that we want to be aligned with the will and purpose of God. Hence, we ask God to empower us to accomplish it. In so doing, we are asking God to help us to be the means whereby God’s purpose might be accomplished - that the justice and peace of God’s kingdom will be real in peoples’ lives. This prayer challenges us to be sensitive to the needs of the world and for guidance in the circumstances in which we encounter in our daily lives. Being sensitive to the needs of the world involve loving as God loves this world. There are many people who may be doing that already. For example, people who care for their relations and neighbours who are ill and others serving as volunteers in many charities. A quote attributed to Mother Theresa states: “Christ has no body now but yours No hands, no feet on earth but yours Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world Christ has no body now on earth but yoursâ€?. Hence, kudos to the people who have become 30 HARWORTH TODAY

On the other hand, I wonder how many of us say ‘thank you’ to the love we receive from people who have become Christ-like to us and this world. I wonder if I can suggest to you to take some time this month to think of a person or organisation that is trying to change things for the better in our world. I wonder if you may also want to write a ‘thank you’ thought or prayer on a card. You may decide to post it to them LI SRVVLEOH RU NHHS LW DW D FRQYHQLHQW SODFH at home and refer to it frequently during the month. Finally, I wonder if you want to become part of Christ’s body by thinking about what you could contribute to the world today, or in the future, to make the world a better place. You may also pray and ask God to be at work in the world, perhaps in particular situations known to you. This can be local, national or global. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,
