2015 edition “The best thing about Memories is making them” Summer already, and at the time of writing most schools are in their final week, so by the time you receive this, the school holidays will be here!

As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays. My older, increasingly independent children aren’t as keen on activities with Mum as when they were younger but I am sure we will still enjoy some family time, while they are still all at home. Just another year before the first potentially leaves for University.

August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this quiet period (and the rest of the time too).

The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Saturday 15th August. Please be mindful of my usual tight turnaround time on the September magazine as I try to avoid spending too many hours glued to my computer during August.

Tickhill and District Lions Club A busy Summer for Tickhill and District Lions with 3 Galas and a Summer Bash to report. On Friday 26th June The Scarbrough Arms hosted our first Summer Bash in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Live music from The Sixties Mix Band and a Fish and Chip supper were enjoyed by everyone and the event was a great success.

The Treasurer is totting up the figures and we will report the donation to the Cancer Detection Trust next month. We hope this is the first of an annual event in the Lions calendar.

We attended Bawtry and Wadworth Galas earlier in June and then the Tickhill Gala at the beginning of July. It’s great to see so many people attending these local events and the weather at Tickhill contributed to a record sell out of strawberries and cream! Feedback from many people is that it was the best gala they had seen for many years. Thanks to everyone who supported us at all the events.

For the 35th year running the Lions of District 105C are proud to be organising their Annual Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled on Saturday 8th August 2015. It takes place at Sandall Park Doncaster ·Opening by Doncaster’s Civic Mayor Cllr Paul Wray @ 11.30am. Entertainment music & PA throughout the day from DJ Lion Chris & DJ Legs, Tony Lister (George Formby) - 1pm, Lisa Tetley’s School of Dance - 2pm, Take a Bow – 2.45pm, Presentations – 3 30pm.

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, August is a month of harvests. In my local dialect, the month of August is called ‘Dzifuu”. It is translated as ‘too much to eat’. To some of us, we have too much to eat and indulge in.

Just about a month ago, I picked up a news item that a supermarket chain has now decided to donate food to charity everyday in order to cut down waste. It was reported that a charity would pick up the items free of charge and turn them into meals for those in need.

This company was working under pressure in order to feed the hungry in our society. However, it is also reported that almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. More than half of this is food and drink, which could be eaten. The irony of this issue is that not everybody has enough to eat or drink.

Moses, a leader of the Jews, is reported to have instructed God’s people regarding looking after the poor. ‘“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you...”’

(Leviticus 23: 22) (New International Version).

Poor people are always with us whilst we throw away good food and drink. Unfortunately, some of us have reasons for not helping them. Some of the reasons are that poor people are lazy, scroungers, wasteful, cannot manage their resources or would

not use the help given them appropriately. Moses’ instruction however, did not ask us to find a reason not to help the poor. We are to make sure that they are catered for because it can be you, a friend or a relation next time.

I wonder what steps we can take to reduce waste in our homes and use the excesses we have to help the poor amongst us. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to readers to consider making our communities ‘poverty free’ without depending on agencies, which have their resources being cut to the core. It is my belief that if each one of us gives some help to the poor, their conditions will change for the better. We don’t need hundreds of pounds to do so. There is another adage in my language, which says, ‘little drops of water makes a mighty ocean’. Just give it a try and put a smile on a poor person’s face. Have a blessed month.

The Group met on Tuesday 7 July at the Devonshire Road Community Centre for their monthly meeting.

As the Chair and Deputy Chair were unable to attend the meeting was chaired by Jane Vernon.

Thank you cards had been received from Steve Bowman and also Frank Hart.

A member had recently attended an Estate Inspection on the brick estate behind the community centre, and had found it very interesting.

She urged other members to get involved in future inspections.

PC Jim Martin attended and gave a full report, which is reproduced elsewhere in this magazine. He answered members’ queries about various issues.

Members were advised of the service at the War Memorial in old Harworth on Sunday 19 July, to commemorate VE/VJ day.

Someone from BDC Parks and Open Spaces will be invited to attend one of our meetings to advise on what can be done about overgrown trees in gardens etc.

Mike Temple asked members to observe one minute’s silence at 11.30 am, in memory of those who lost their lives in the 7/7 bombings in London ten years ago.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 4 August, at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. T

Practice Update Doctors With the retirement of Dr Saunders in November there will of necessity, be changes but work is ongoing to appoint a new doctor to replace him.

The replacement for Dr Sheehan is Dr DeSilva and he starts on a permanent basis at The Practice on Aug 5th. Dr Foster the present registrar leaves on Aug 4th 2015 to take up his second year placement within the NHS but will then return for his final year of GP training in Aug 2016. However a new registrar Dr Furhan Majid will join the practice on Aug 5th 2015 will be with the practice for 12 months. Dr Keegan also a registrar will be returning from Maternity Leave on Dec 22nd 2015 and will be working part time.

However, we were happy to talk to all patients. We received no negative comments only suggestions which we have passed on to The Practice.

Strictly Back in Town!

Appearing exclusively at TFest; Doncaster....are you ready to welcome back to his hometown Chris Madin, lead singer from Strictly Come Dancing and his wonderful, wonderful orchestra!

Chris and his 14 piece band will take festival goers on a fabulous journey through the musical eras; from swing to rock there will most definitely be a song for everyone.

“I cannot wait to be performing back here in Doncaster” Chris tells us. “I have recently moved home from London, bringing my wife and two small children with me and there is nothing like being back up North! I have worked and travelled all over the world, and most of my work is still in London I am there every week recording, so it is great that I finally have a base back here in Doncaster near my family and friends” Chris left Doncaster aged just 11 to study music at Chethams Music School in Manchester. An accomplished piano player he also became a renowned vocalist, working professionally from the age of 16 providing vocals to commercials, video games and theme tunes, developing a reputation as a sought after session singer for the industry.

After several years as one of the most sought after ‘voices for hire’ Strictly Come Dancing came along and Chris has now been a regular singer alongside Tommy Blaze for 5 years. He didn’t stop there...X Factor naturally wanted a slice of the action and in 2014 Chris provided the vocal arrangements for the groups and the male artists.

“Much of what I do takes place behind the scenes.

Arranging scores and music for artists is a big part of my job and is what I have done most recently for Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. That was my first Eurovision, having been asked every year, but been unable to make it because of work commitments. It was enormous fun, if not hard work, and yes it is something I would do again!”

the country joining me and it will be a fantastic show. I heard of TFest in 2013 through my family and followed it on Facebook and Twitter. I loved their ethos of bringing live music through local bands to local people. Everybody should have access to live music, especially children. They need to be inspired and I am hoping to do that this year myself with my wonderful orchestra. “ “We are really excited to be bringing Chris to TFest this year” says organiser Steve Madin “We wanted to make sure that there was a very definite family appeal to this year’s show, and we know that Chris, who will play for an hour and a half will bring something for everyone. We have a fantastic mix of bands this year, with this one being the real difference and the real family attraction. ”Chris will play from 4:30 on the main stage at the Cricket Club.

Arts Review

& what’s going on - AUGUST 2015

Caro in Yorkshire (Yorkshire Sculpture Park)

Every now and then you make a discovery and at the end of June the DNweekeND was on in Doncaster – it’s a loosely structured arts festival, involving many local people, with lots of things going on all over the town, some seem quite random, others programed and organised. So I went to have tea with Wendy Cope (poet) at CAST, and an excellent tea we got there – Doncaster’s equivalent to Betty’s… and the small audience had a very pleasant time of it, poetry, chat, tea and cakes… what better? I then stumbled out into the bright June afternoon of Sir Nigel Gresley Square to find the Doncaster Youth Jazz orchestra playing. Oh Wow! They are wonderful! They needed an audience 10 times the size of we few, who sat and enjoyed their magnificent playing. What a treat! Then, Later that day in the grand Mansion House salon the Quirky Choir performed a concert including the ‘Making Music’ commission, themed on Doncaster Market, they had worked with composer Anna Braithwaite who had devised a really challenging piece of music for the choir.

They were tremendous, a superb setting and wonderful fun event. The Quirky Choir is run by Janet Wood, at The Point – home of DArts - on Wednesdays from 6.45pm to 8.45pm. This concert will be broadcast via Radio 3 at some point in the Autumn.

A couple of weeks later I discovered Doncaster’s Brewery & Tap on Young Street ( Waterdale). I was not the designated driver that evening, so I could do a little tasting, and have to report that it’s very nice beer they make there, and you can wander through the brewery as its just behind the bar! All sorts goes on there, Art classes happen and Morris dancers practice in the upstairs room, but what I went to was an evening of the spoken word and poetry. Well Spoken! This happens every second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm - 13th Aug the next oneand is an informal get together for writers to read their work, and it can get very lively.

We had some excellent work put before us by writers aged from 20 to 94. And then there is a Writers’ Group which also is a Monthly event - check dates with the venue. It’s a support network/critical friend

to writers of all types. Bring a piece of poetry, prose or script to read and discuss.

Allotments make a comeback!

During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit.

During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy!

There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge.

Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses. And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the

supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of food-related concerns seems to be growing exponentially.

In the absence of clear leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food.

Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that.

Price and availability varies around the country.

In many areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites.

Registering your interest may help to encourage the search for more suitable areas – perhaps you could suggest areas to your local council? If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with.

Online scams and safety online There are a number of online and phone scams taking place at present, one scam in particular is people ringing up pretending to be the fraud department at a bank, stating that there is fraud taking place at the person’s branch.

They then instruct the person not to tell the branch and to go in and withdraw their money and put it in another bank account in another bank. If the branch staff challenge the person withdrawing the money they are told to say it is for husbands care or property purchase so as not to raise suspicion. The scam is that when the money is deposited into the new account the scammers, online immediately transfer the money into another account and then several other accounts before closing the accounts to prevent being traced. The final account the money is transferred to is usually an account abroad but authorities are finding it difficult to trace. There have been 3 incidents alone in the Tuxford area where one elderly couple were scammed approximately £90,000 all their life savings. It is highly unlikely that people who have lost this money will be able to claim this money back from the banks as the banks will see this as actions that the person or persons that hold the account have willingly participated in.

Quad Bikes in the area We continue to receive an increase of incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult

to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present.

Throughout January to June 2015 the Neighbourhood policing team, have seized 5 off road bikes and 3 quad bikes that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area.

Some of these bikes seized have been examined and confirmed stolen property where enquiries are ongoing.

Some of these vehicles will be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal.

Following a Police operation a quad bike and trailer were seized by officers in April both were reported to be stolen.

Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non-emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property.

Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen.

We continue to offer free property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. News from the courts over the past few months A male from Harworth and Bircotes has been charged with murder and remanded in custody following an incident on Wednesday 24th June 2015 where a male also from Harworth and Bircotes was killed whilst riding his push bike on Blyth road at around 2pm.

There has been a lot of press and media coverage in relation to this incident which has affected both families, who have kindly requested that their privacy is respected so they can come to terms with this tragic incident.

2 Males and a Female from the Harworth area have been found guilty at court recently for threatening behaviour and Criminal Damage in relation to an incident on 10th March 2015. 1 of the males and the female received 16 weeks imprisonment, restraining order for 3 years and £80 surcharge. The other male has received 8 weeks imprisonment which has been suspended for 12 months, £100 costs and £80 surcharge.

A male from the Bircotes area has pleaded guilty to Possession of Class A drug and Possession of Class B drug where he received a fine of £75, victim surcharge £20, costs £85 and the drugs to be forfeited and destroyed.

3 males from the Harworth and Bircotes area have been sentenced to various custodial sentences after being found guilty of being involved in Burglary offences in Lincolnshire. 1 male received 2 years, 1 male received 18 months, and the other male received 12 months.

community Speeding Vehicles At the recent Priority Setting meeting the issue of speeding vehicles has been raised as one of the three main priorities in the area.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be continuing to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area. The Neighbourhood policing team are arranging some more active speed detection dates with school throughout 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and June 2015 approximately 1600 vehicles have been monitored with around 10 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.65% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area.

The local Neighbourhood Policing Team is also working closely with the Town council and Notts County...

...Council highways department to look at improving the road layout system within Harworth and Bircotes, to improve road safety and reduce the number of Road traffic collisions in the area.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - AUGUST 2015 3RD JULY: A MINUTES SILENCE The flag was flown at halfmast at the Town Hall and a minutes silence observed at 12 noon in memory of those who died so tragically in Tunisia.

Traditionally, the flag at the Cenotaph is only lowered when there is a death in the Royal Family.

A1 HOUSING: Completion of Phase One, Smith Square The 31st July will see tenants, A1 and Bassetlaw District Council gather on the site of the new buildings to celebrate the completion of Phase 1, followed by a meeting at H&B Town Hall.

This is very much a day for the tenants; there will no doubt be speeches and photographs followed by a light lunch.

I did my own site visit in early July; as I was escorted around the different types of buildings I was very impressed by the spaciousness, the thought that had gone into the designs, the mix of different house designs on the same street, and the overall quality of the homes.

Tenants have been given a choice of kitchen units, and even the turning circle at the end of the road had been initially tested by a Council refuse lorry before it was completed.

A1 has block-booked a room at the Town Hall so that individual tenants can be seen in private and arrangements made for their transfer into their new 24

homes from the end of July and throughout August.

Incidentally, those people living on Smith Square who had their house numbers changed, any expense they have suffered will be met by A1 e.g. there is a cost to changing your details on a driving licence. Make sure you have keep copies of those costs and hand in at the A1 Office, Community Information Centre.

What comes next? Phase 2, which will see the demolition of the remaining Airey houses on Smith Square, followed by replacement new housing.

FILM CREW AT WORK Some of you may have noticed a film crew operating here in the last week of June. They were making a documentary about Tommy Simpson, and had secured permission to film areas in H&B that relate to his life. Will you be able to see the film? Apparently not, I am told, because it is intended for a French audience. Ah, c’est la vie!

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: Meeting with Nottinghamshire County Council People here have made it plain which areas cause them most

concern regarding traffic, and I have duly passed on those concerns in a meeting with Notts. County – they have now promised to visit our Town and assess what can be done.

The areas that you repeatedly complain about are:• Bawtry Road and Styrrup Road – speeding.

• Lack of a crossing near ALDI – promised but not delivered.

• The zebra crossing on Scrooby Road, near the Medical Centre, and • The nearby roundabout next to the Medical Centre, often ignored by drivers travelling on Scrooby Road towards Bircotes.

This list does not include all that we discussed; furthermore a key issue for me is how any changes along Scrooby Road will serve the population and the shops both now and in the future, as and when the Town grows.

I did not include Harworth Crossroads because I know there are plans to make changes/improve public safety, which should be completed by 2017/18.
