December already and the last magazine of 2017. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction. At that time, I was preparing to move house, so we are now approaching our first anniversary of moving into our new home. Many changes have taken place, not least the removal of a couple of internal walls, and a new kitchen into that enlarged open plan space. A few more changes are planned before the year is out!

The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2018!

From the Practice The uptake on flu vaccinations from the surgery has been disappointingly low this year although the Doctors are aware that some patients are having their vaccinations at their chemist of choice. There is concern that full medical histories are only available at the doctors and should any reaction occur it will be the GP who the patient will need to see. Equally as funding follows the vaccination process, by not having their vaccinations at The Surgery patients are reducing the amount of funds available to spend on patient care next year. Any patient who qualifies for a flu vaccination and has not yet had one should just ask at reception and they will be given an appointment. The festive season is upon us and you are asked to be aware of the dangers of Spiked Drinks affecting all ages and both sexes. There have been several instances reported so please do not leave your drink unattended and should you realise that drink has been out of your sight, the advice is ‘do not drink it.’
From NHS Doncaster Christmas and New Year are busy times for the NHS so please help us by choosing the right services in Doncaster if you need care at short notice. Don’t forget that when your doctors’ surgery is closed on Sat 24th December it won’t reopen until Wednesday 28 December. So, if you are on prescription medicines, please make sure you have enough to cover this period, or order a repeat from your GP now. Similarly, when your surgery is closed on Sat 31 December it won’t re-open until Tuesday 3 January, 2018. So please check your medicines now. Pharmacists are a great source of health advice and over the counter medicines if you feel ill. Please make sure you know the pharmacy opening hours for the festive 4

season. Or you can ring NHS 111 for free confidential health advice over the telephone. GPs will be on duty round-the-clock over the Christmas and New Year period. If you feel unwell and need to talk to one, ring your normal surgery number and you will be either automatically transferred to one or an answer-phone message will give you the number to contact them. The Same Day Health Centre, based at Cavendish Court, South Parade, Doncaster, is open every day of the year but you must ring first to get an appointment. Ring 0300 123 3103 and you will usually get an appointment within 24 hours.
From The Patients Group In his annual report ‘The State of Care’ Sir David Behan the Chief executive of (the Care Quality Commission) has stated that, “In general the quality of care is good across the UK. However Health and Care staff, and the services they work for, are under huge pressure. The combination of greater demand and unfilled vacancies means that staff are working ever harder to deliver the quality of care that people have a right to expect. However, there is a limit to their resilience. The fact that front line care has been maintained, in the toughest climate that most can remember, is a testament to the efforts of frontline staff, managers and leaders.” With this in mind The PPG would on behalf of all patients, like to thank all staff at The Tickhill and Colliery Practice for their continued care and dedication. We wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2017. T

Be Like a Sheperd It’s Christmas again! Hooray! Dear Friends, this is the child in me hoping that every day is Christmas. I have hence, decided to suspend the series on the Lord’s prayer and talk about Christmas this month. At Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. This is good news to the world and this good news was expressed by an angel to a group of shepherds on the plains of Palestine on the night Jesus was born in Bethlehem. “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ (Luke 2: 8 – 12)

the dangerous terrains of Palestine to walk some distance. They may have left the flock at the mercy of wild animals and fellow ‘bandits’. Secondly, they took the risk to come back to town to face abuse and rejection again. The third risk they took is stated in Luke 2: 17, “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child”. The shepherds’ reaction to checking the facts of the good news resulted in them sharing the news of the birth of the Saviour with everyone they came into contact with – maybe including the people who might have abused and rejected them and possibly, their fellow ‘bandits’. People may not have believed them but they did not care. I supposed they shared the news daily. I wonder if you have caught the buzz of the good news of Christmas and if so, how are you sharing this news. For some of us, we only share the good news and do good at Christmas. Maybe it may be that time of year when we want to tick the box and overcome our egos. Personally, I believe that the good news of Christmas is to be shared with everyone frequently, as the shepherds did. Share it at work, at home, and in the community. Forget about what people will think of you and just share. Like the shepherds, let everyday be Christmas to you as you believe in the good news of the birth of the Saviour and put a smile on someone’s face by doing good to people daily.
The Bible in the Old Testament depicts shepherds as people of responsibility and great love. King David summarises their nature when he described God as a shepherd in Psalm 23, one of the psalms that most of us have connected with at weddings and funerals. On the other hand, by the time Jesus was born, shepherds were not in the good books of people in Palestine. They were seen as scruffy bandits and thieves. Hence, Jesus, describing himself as the shepherd in the gospel of John chapter 10, had to describe himself as the good one.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year greetings to you.
Luke went further to state that the shepherds, on hearing the good news, hurried to Bethlehem to see for themselves what has happened. If they live in today’s world, we may state that they wanted to check if the news was not ‘fake’.
Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam
I wonder if you have realised that the shepherds had to take risks in order to confirm the good news. First, they had to leave their flock on

Harworth Colliery Football Club December Update! Hello and welcome to this Months update from around the clubs at Harworth Colliery. Firstly I would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year as we hope to have the same at the Football Club. The first team remain top of the table heading into December with a few points to spare as well. They have been involved in some great games through November where they have shown great battling qualities to keep their unbeaten league run going. One of the games v Thorne losing 2-4 only to go and win it 5-4, its imperative we keep this run going as we have historically always suffered in the second half of the season. The big crunch game comes on the 2nd of December against Retford FC who appear to be our main rivals both geographically and for promotion. Like us they have made great strides to improve their facilities in the hope to get promotion. The game is away and we really hope that we can take a great following to the game. The hard work is beginning to pay off for the Under 21’s, claiming two great scalps in beating both Staveley FC and Handsworth in the past month. To put this into perspective the club has won just three games in the previous two seasons all against Worksop Town. The two wins this season have come against the teams that have won the league for the past two seasons, this should give the lads the belief to go and claim more scalps as the management have always known that the ability was there. A small note about Callum Robinson who turned 16 in September and plays for our U16’s, Callum made his debut against Handsworth and has won two of the three games that he has played in. This should give great hope to all the young players that they can step up, well done Callum and long may yours and the teams good run continue. The Reserves are still doing well at present, they sit 4th and remain in the League cup so will hope for a good run in that, we have the players to get some silverware in the cabinet if we can keep some consistency. The Ladies have at the time of writing just lost their first league game away at Chesterfield FC, these are types of clubs that the ladies are now playing but still holding their own, which is great to see and the success of this side is filtering down to the Girls. 16 HARWORTH TODAY
Last months article highlighted the new Under 10’s and we now have an Under 8’s girls managed by Kirsty King and very kindly and proudly sponsored by King Cones a new business in the village that is itself doing incredibly well and the club are delighted that they are giving back to the community and to get another new team off the ground. Huge thank you to Austen and all at King Cones, go visit them and see their new menu lots to keep you warm and content during the winter months. The club are immensley proud that local businesses continue to support the club and long may that continue as we need you. Mini Kicks has unfortunatly had to end for now but will begin again once we have someone to run this, more than likely in the New Year. The club will be holding its Annual Christmas Raffle during December with all teams and players asked to sell on behalf of the club. If you or any local businesses have any prizes you may wish to donate then please get in touch on the details below. Again we wish you all a very happy Christmas. Doncaster Sheffield Airport launches airspace consultation A public consultation on proposed changes to the airspace around Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) has been launched which will outline potential minor changes to the routes that aircraft depart and arrive into the airport. DSA is participating in a UK-wide initiative to modernise airspace known as the Future Airspace Strategy (FAS) backed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which will involve moving away from the traditional groundbased navigation and over to a new satellite navigation system known as Area Navigation (RNAV). The government’s objectives to modernise UK airspace policy are a welcome step which could bring wider benefits across the UK such as noise reduction, less CO2 and other emissions, plus fuel and time savings. The airport has taken the opportunity to utilise this new technology to develop and consult on improved departure and arrival routes from the site, investing over £250,000 in the design process. The new technology will allow aircraft to operate with greater accuracy within their designated flight paths when departing and arriving from DSA. The routes have been designed to be very close to the current routes but improved, where possible, to reduce disruption to communities surrounding the airport. This process will allow us to ensure that we are using our airspace in the most efficient way, whilst also reducing disruption to local communities. We have made considerable efforts to design these proposed routes to the benefit of local communities and to ensure safety. We have worked closely with local stakeholders to develop these proposals, including our Airport Consultative Committee made up of elected representatives, local public agencies, local business, residential communities and airport users. We would encourage all interested parties to participate in the consultation process. The consultation will run until 15th December 2017. More details including the full consultation document can be found on the DSA website: www.flydsa.co.uk/about-us/dsaconsultation/ T 18 HARWORTH TODAY
Tickhill Parish Room After a very busy summer Tickhill Parish Room is getting ready for the Christmas Festivities. We start on the 23rd November, opening for refreshments and hot drinks (including mulled fruit punch), with some stalls on the front of the building. We are hoping it is not wet, or windy on the night! The tree on the front will have its lights officially switched on at 6 p.m. – along with the rest of Tickhill, if all goes to plan. There will be 102 trees put up and lit throughout Tickhill this year – the most ever. This means our lovely building will need to be decorated well in advance of the 23rd – so Christmas will seem to last quite a while this year! The Parish Room is available for anyone to hire for any occasion, not just Christmas. Our lovely Grade II listed building itself is run as a Charity and we rely on donations from members of the public and bookings. We are not funded by anyone. Although we have a busy diary we do still have vacancies on some days/evenings of the week for your own ‘function’. Please ring me for details or call in and see for yourself – we are open for coffee every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year!

ALL SAINT’S CHURCH, HARWORTH – serving
Harworth & Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley
Dear Readers Christmas is such a busy time of year for everyone, so this joyous season let us try to take a step back from our busy lives and enjoy time with our loved ones. It is also a time to reflect on the year that has passed, as we think of those who are far away or no longer with us. Many people say the first Christmas after losing a loved one is particularly hard. But it is also a time to remember all that we have to be thankful for.
In our last article I wrote that we were hopeful we would have some good news regarding a vicar for our parish as we had received two applications with an interview date arranged for September. Unfortunately for our parish, both applicants had decided to take up other positions in the country. It was very disappointing but the Bishop has assured us that they are continuing to be proactive in seeking a new appointment in Harworth and our parish is very much in his prayers. The hope is that we will soon have a priest who will serve us for many years to come with faithfulness and confident hope. We will continue with our Sunday and Thursday morning Services and also Baptisms, weddings and funerals, so please rest assured our church life will go on as usual until we have a new appointment. Update on Miners Window. Graeme Willson, artist and his colleague have been sourcing the special glass that is required for the window, they recently made a visit to English Antique Glass in Birmingham. The Company are able to supply three of the five flashed glass colours they were looking for. Currently, they are searching throughout the country for this specialist glass; Graeme has informed us that there may be some 22 HARWORTH TODAY
uncertainty about the December installation date. We know there is a lot of interest in the window and once installed we will arrange to have our church open for anyone to come in and have a look. A dedication service will take place I hope to give you further details in the next edition of this magazine. Grand Christmas draw ticket sales. Special thanks to everyone who has purchased a ticket, also thanks to Asda for allowing us to sell tickets in their store on Fridays and Saturdays throughout November. The draw will take place at the Brass Band Concert on Sunday 17th December at the Town Hall.
Dates for your Diary Tree of Light Memorial Service 3rd December at 3pm. Invitations have gone out to those who have had funerals in our church over the last year to attend this service. This service is a short service with Carols and readings. There will also be quiet times and the reading out of the names for those for whom we have conducted funerals in the last year or so and candles will be lit. The centerpiece of this service is our special tree upon which we invite you to write out messages and leave them on the tree. This service is open to anyone, so please do invite any friends or family and anyone you know who has been bereaved. Rev’d Irene Tissington will be officiating this service. The Christmas Wreath Until fairly recently in history, certainly up to Victorian times, people could never be certain they would safely survive the harsh winter. So, they developed rituals and displays to help them get through the darker days. One such symbolic display of hope was the Christmas wreath. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. Now we hang them on our doors and use them as table centrepieces because they look wonderfully opulent and festive. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. This became fused with ‘wrethe’ from middle English which means a twisted band or ring of leaves. At this bleak time of year, it’s traditional to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn a wreath. In past times the addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations were taken 26 HARWORTH TODAY
down, the edible parts would be eaten and the bounty of summer could be enjoyed in the depth of winter. Making a wreath is fun and relatively easy. You can make a simple and cheap evergreen circle or push the boat out and create an elaborate bauble ring. You can buy a ring of flower-arrangers’ foam. Soak it in tepid water, and then stick sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows into it using wire if necessary. Or you can make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay. This will need to be held in place using thinner gauge wire. You can then wire in foliage and decorations. I will just warn you about holly though; working with it can be a painful experience so wear gloves and maybe have a box of plasters handy! If you want to try something different you can use a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, threaded popcorn and cranberries or woven red and yellow dogwood cut from your garden and interweaved with battery-operated lights. Use your gardener’s imagination.
Happy Christmas gardening.

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association
On Tuesday 7 November the Harworth and Bircotes Tenants & Residents Group held their monthly meeting at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. Under discussion was a recent letter sent out to all A1 Housing Tenants, regarding changes to their tenancy agreements, and asking them to complete a survey on this matter. Members were urged to complete the survey, which can be done either on-line, if you have access to a computer, (or with help from a relative with a computer), by visiting the Information Centre at the Town Hall, or by using the Freephone number of 0800 590542. It is concerning the policy about succession of tenancy. The survey should be completed by 6 December, when any comments will be taken into account before the final decision to vary the Tenancy Agreement. Members were also informed of continuing roadworks on Scrooby Road. The Treasurer said that on a recent trip to the bank they had advised her to pass on a warning to members that there were still some very new-looking, shiny but old £1 coins in circulation, so check your change carefully in shops etc. Also, there are some fake £5 notes circulating – yes, even the supposedly fake-proof ones!
Be Sure of a Warm Welcome!
Three members had attended the recent film shown at the Town Hall, and were disappointed that only about nine people were present. We often hear it said that there is nothing to do, and yet when a film show is put on the response from the public is so poor. Let’s get the word out and encourage people to support a great new venture. The next cinema club showing is during the Christmas Lights Event weekend, and the film will be advertised once it is known what will be shown. Members were urged to get the word around. It may be possible to arrange some transport if there is enough interest. A member was concerned about the house near the traffic lights on the corner of Scrooby Road and Shrewsbury Road. The garden has become a dumping ground and it is an eyesore. BDC Environmental Services will be informed. The next meeting of the Group will be on Tuesday 5 December, at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. New members are always welcome.all, BircotesH

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2017 Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine and the Council website. Any queries: contact me or other councillors; we will, as always, try to help. Developing Harworth and Bircotes. Part 3. Previously, I have written about the regeneration of Harworth and Bircotes in terms of Housing, Town Centre Development, and the Infrastructure needed to support growth. Another priority is improving the local environment and public spaces, giving people a sense of pride in the place they call home. The Town Council has done much to make noticeable progress in recent years, such as in the old cemetery, as well as opening the new cemetery on Styrrup Road; purchasing and improving the public toilets and the Community Information Centre has made them valued community assets. We have provided gateway signs and planters, hanging baskets along the shop fronts, seen new bus shelters installed, and the Community Bus Service is much appreciated. We have attracted funds for the Miners Memorial and the planted area with new paving alongside it, and next will be the Community Area near the Town Hall, and these ongoing improvements and community projects will continue. Importantly, we rely on you to tell us what else is needed, and where, and what you think could be done to improve our current environment. Keeping all the different strands of the main regeneration priorities 32 HARWORTH TODAY
together, so that we get the right result, is complex but achievable – a bit like a complicated knitting pattern that eventually produces a wonderful Fair Isle jumper! Yes, I know we are still at a very early stage of major changes and yes, it will take years to achieve, but of primary importance is planning for connectivity, linking new developments with our established areas via new roads and pedestrian routes. The work currently going on with developers, planners, Highways, County Council, Bassetlaw District Council and, with your help, this Town Council is about getting the right ideas, designs, structures and environmental features in place, ensuring our public domain is fit for purpose. Council Communications Apart from keeping you informed through this magazine, you can also keep updated via the Council’s Facebook page: harworthandbircotes towncouncil, or the Council website: www.harworthandbircotestowncouncil.org.uk Housing Needs Survey Recently I made you a promise that I would ask Bassetlaw District Council for a second Housing Needs Survey, so that we have a clear understanding of the types of housing local people want to see. I am happy to report that the survey is now in progress, from 27th November until 15th December. How can you access the survey? There are several ways: by the Council website or the Council
Facebook page, or by using a paper questionnaire available at the Town Hall. We are also carry out some face-to-face interviews in different sections of the Town, so that we gather a representative crosssection of your opinions. I know local people have a wide range of suggestions – bungalows, bigger houses, smaller houses, starter homes and single accommodation, private and social so please, complete the survey and tell us what you think is needed; it’s important because your opinion gives this Council and Bassetlaw District Council evidence on which to base housing needs locally. Simpson Park: Public Consultation, 8th November Many people attended, and there were two main levels of interest on view. 1.Housing: The road past Asda will be extended into the site and the first two housing developments will be built either side of the new road. Jones Homes and Kier Construction were on hand to answer questions from the public. It is anticipated that work on the new road will start next year, plans for the housing developments are about to be submitted to Bassetlaw District Council. 2.The Master Plan for the whole site was on view, which featured a link road connecting Blyth Road to Scrooby Road, and a large green area for recreation and natural wildlife. I was pleased to see that Harworth Estates have

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2017 listened - the Plan includes a new primary school with a pedestrian link from the Town Hall area, plus proper facilities for safely managing school vehicle traffic. This is the bigger picture, the vision for the future, and it will take many years to complete. Visit from Notts. County Highways Last month, some Harworth and Bircotes Town Councillors met with a planner from Highways to discuss road and traffic issues in our Town. This lady had certainly done her homework, having previously walked the patch; she also knew about every housing development, both active and pending, large and small. It’s interesting how planners think – she started 15-20 years ahead in the future and then worked backwards to the present time, talking about possible alternative routes, how to lessen the load on Scrooby Road yet protect the shops and make pedestrian access to them easier. She identified long, medium and short-term interventions, and outlined possible options for a final ‘grand scheme`. Even better, she confirmed she was meeting with NEXUS to consider their thoughts on the future town centre…we await the outcome of their combined views with interest. Heritage Lottery Fund: Award for Worksop Bassetlaw District Council has been awarded £1.2m to renovate buildings of architectural interest at the top of Bridge Street; the plan is to restore old buildings back to their former glory, making this area a better place for visitors and residents. We seldom notice architectural features when out shopping, but we all know maintaining them is expensive, especially as there are strict rules on what can/cannot be done to a listed building. Q. Did you know the site of a
Norman castle is hidden behind the shops at the top of Bridge Street? – so that must be why they call it Castle Hill! New District Policy on Fly-Posting Bassetlaw District Council plans to introduce a new Fly-Posting Policy, these are the key points: 1. Fly-posting is unlawful. It relates to putting up a poster, placard, banner that can be seen from the highway/in a public place, usually by someone advertising a business. In time they become an eyesore, making the place look untidy and uncared for. 2. If in breach of the policy, a fixed penalty fine may be issued. 3. Anyone wishing to advertise an event must seek permission/check if planning permission is required. 4. There are rules designed to help charities and community groups, (and someone with a missing pet) and some posters e.g. Neighbourhood Watch Area, are indeed welcome. BUT there is a problem: permitted posters should be removed after an event, not left for someone else to deal with it; NOR should they be fixed in the middle of a roundabout or at a busy road junction, presenting a hazard to drivers. Please, do remember that it is your responsibility to check if you need permission, and to remove posters/ placards after a community event. We Have a Problem Due to ongoing abuse of the Portaloo in the Tickhill Road Cemetery, Council is having to consider removing it. I won’t offend you by describing the state it is regularly left in so that it is not fit for public use, I will tell you we are not prepared to ask our staff to continue cleaning up the disgusting mess regularly found in it. Again, we have a case of the few spoiling things for the majority, but the situation has now gone beyond the point of all reason. A Serious Problem has arisen
with schoolchildren entering the Simpson Park site whilst construction vehicles are working, despite clear warning signs. We all know the dangers of an industrial site, and the company, V.H.E., is very concerned that a child might be injured, so have asked me to alert parents/grandparents to the fact that the site is dangerous to children, it is not a playground. The large hills of sand on the site may appear attractive to youngsters, but nobody wants to see a child injured and hospitalised. Thanks go to Serlby Park Academy for responding so quickly and warning the children of the risks they are taking. A Further Problem is theft by youths entering the site and getting close to big machinery whilst in operation; they are taking huge risks and yet are very abusive to staff. V.H.E. have involved the Police, but what an example to set for younger children! CONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY Council Meetings It was a pleasure to see about a dozen people from the Harworth and Bircotes First Community Group present at the last meeting. Council listened to their suggestions, answered their questions where we could, and we asked for their opinion on a couple of agenda items. They were also very patient, listening to some items considered essential to Council but not necessarily of great interest to the public e.g. Health and Safety report – well done, folks! Christmas Events Weekend of 1st December. Switch-on Lighting Event, 4.30 pm, Friday 1st. The ice rink will be in place all weekend, also on Saturday and Sunday (2nd and 3rd Dec.) the community cinema will be showing Christmas-themed films – times to be confirmed. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2017 more than 50 retired people attending and all, it seems, enjoying themselves. There is very positive feedback from those attending, and the volunteers find it a real pleasure to serve the oldest members of our community and see them enjoying themselves. What makes it successful? Meeting old friends, catching up on their news, and importantly, having a laugh! Some (not all) of our 80+ population have health problems that restrict their mobility and consequently their social life; having use of the door-to-door community bus service overcomes any transport problems. Some Special Stars: thanks to all the volunteer helpers, who do a brilliant job! Thanks to Asda, Aldi, and County Councillor Sheila Place for kind donations. N.B. Christmas Luncheon Club: 20th December, Tickets £3.50, available from the Town Hall. Another Star! I was reading through the new draft Housing Strategy for Bassetlaw last month, which I believe to be a wellresearched document that outlines District Council policy on meeting future housing needs across the whole District; turning the pages I came across a full-size colour photograph of one of our residents, Shelley Middleton. Shelley and her neighbours in Smith Square proved to be a proactive and effective group when talking to A1 about new houses, long before the old Airey Houses were knocked down and replaced, and I remember her telling me that people in Smith Square “are a community, we all look out for each other”. Well, they certainly did that, and the photograph of Shelley shows her wearing a hard hat and hi-vis jacket, trowel in hand, laying bricks. Now that’s what I call getting involved! To Make You Smile: Posh Nosh Looking for items to top up a box of 34 HARWORTH TODAY
foodstuff meant for the food bank, I found one tin at the very back of a cupboard that was well hidden by other tins and jars. Despite my best efforts it wouldn’t budge, it was welded to the shelf; it took a tall young male visitor to later wrestle it free from its gooey anchor. I discovered the tin contained green flageolet beans. What? I had never heard of them - where had they come from? I have since learned there are 3 different types of flageolet which are regarded as ‘the caviar of beans’. In France they are highly prized, Italian people refer to them as cannelloni beans, but to me and you they are a type of haricot bean. Did I give the beans to the food bank? No - looking at the date on the tin it should have been used years ago! Talking of food, especially during the festive season, I think it appropriate to mention the food bank. I know they are expecting some difficult weeks in December and January, especially with the introduction of Universal Credit to Bassetlaw this month. What do they need? Well, nothing fancy, just the basics staples we all buy and keep in our kitchen cupboards. I try to include the odd tin of tuna or meat, just to provide a bit of protein, sometimes I take nappies, and because I just can’t imagine having to live without them, I occasionally provide toilet rolls, soap and toothpaste. Donations of food/other items can be left at the Town Hall. On behalf of the Town Council, I wish you all a very happy Christmas.
