Welcome to the
FEBRUARY 2018 edition February is an odd month, Christmas is a distant memory, yet Spring still feels a long way away, despite the availability of the daffodils, that I love to bring in to my home at this time of year, as a reminder that longer days and warmer weather is on the way. In this month’s magazine look out for the 10% off voucher within the Torne Valley advert – valid on anything within the store not already reduced. New advertiser The Chandelier are offering all readers some special deals within their advert too. Both could be a way to brighten a dull February day! Look out for other offers, we often have them! As always, we welcome some new advertisers this month as well as lots of long standing ones who continue to advertise within our pages as a great way of getting customers. If you contact any this month don’t forget to tell them where you found them. The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 8th February. Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.
Best wishes,

My money this month is 15 to 17 Feb ‘Trump the Musical’ and wonder if it will still be as president that the subject of this ‘disturbing, irreverent and very silly’ show will entertain us…. I am imagining something ‘Beyond The Fringe’ -ish here. And 8 – 10 Feb a show of quite a different complexion – Noel Coward’s ‘Private Lives’. 20 March - Exhibition on Screen Vincent van Gogh. 27 Feb, a piece of physical theatre from Gecko entitled ‘The Wedding’. …and plenty more www. castindoncaster.com Djanogly Art Gallery in Nottingham until 4 March ‘Viking: Rediscover the Legend’ on tour from the British Museum including treasures from many of the well-known hoards ever discovered in this country. www. lakesidearts.org.uk Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sunday. Peter Lavery is best known for his seductive advertising photography, but for the last 50 years he has been photographing circus performers around Britain. All shot on a plate camera, the work is an impressive collection of circus subjects. These intimately detailed photographs expose moments of ordinariness in extraordinary lives. Lavery has had an enduring interest and passion for the subject since dropping in on a small indoor circus in his home town of Wakefield in 1968. The son of a Yorkshire miner, Lavery progressed via Leeds Art College to the Royal College of Art in London, where he studied photography. Before finishing his course there, he had already started travelling, and living rough, around the country in search of circuses. Circus Work is considered one of the most important examples of human and social documentation produced in Britain. This is

If you look closely at his pictures you will discover the ghosts of this workforce revealed by tiny traces of an intangible presence: abandoned tools, official notices, scuffed paintwork and, perhaps most poignantly, the scribbled graffiti of defeat marking a farewell to the workplace. www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Sheffield Theatres in the Lyceum ‘Hairspray’, ‘Beautiful’ the Carole King musical, in the Crucible ‘Frost /Nixon’ and in the Studio a new and local play ‘Chicken Soup’ from Orgreave to the Brexit-vote, food-bank times. www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Tickhill Music Society 9 February at 7pm Rosalind Ventris (viola) and Richard Uttley ( piano). Hello to everyone from Mayflower Sanctuary, I would like to say how overwhelmed we are to have had so many treats, toys, blankets, food and lots more brought to us over the Christmas period and they are still coming. Everyone’s generosity is amazing. All our residents had a wonderful Christmas getting into their parcels and tiring themselves out playing with their new toys. We have had the busiest December and January we have had for a few years. However, we did take a view before re homing over the Christmas period. We don’t like to re home over this time if there is to be a full house or lots of activity which is pretty normal at Christmas. We need our new pets to be given a chance to settle down before subjecting them to a riotous household. When I went to the Sanctuary last Saturday I actually saw an empty pen, I have really never seen that previously, however it won’t be long before it is taken as we still have a list of waiting dogs. Our cattery transformation has started so all of the cats have been moved to a safe place at the opposite part of the Sanctuary whilst the work is taking place. We should have new cat pens up and running in a few weeks I am told. We are organising a big event to raise funds on May 18th it is a 14Mayflower Animal Sanctuary,

Members had attended the pantomime in Retford, and all agreed it had been a great outing. Our own Chair, Judy Turner, had been invited on to the stage by the comedian and had done really well, causing much merriment. Well done Judy. Members were asked to consider what outings they would like for this year and these will be discussed and voted on at a future meeting.

By Rachel Leverton
Greenhouse Joy I am an impatient gardener. By February I am always eager to get started and my greenhouse means that I can do just that.
You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but I like to because it lets me get an early start in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants alive through the winter. When I had an unheated greenhouse my frost-tender plants rarely survived.
A greenhouse means that I don’t fear the weather, I can potter in my garden all year round and I can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and it’s well worth trying to incorporate one into your space.
I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t smell and doesn’t produce the excessive amounts RI ZDWHU YDSRXU DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK SDUDI¿ Q 0DNH VXUH \RX XVH D TXDOL¿ HG HOHFWULFLDQ DQG WKDW all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it very economical.
Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems.
At the other end of the year make sure you have ventilation, or your plants will cook. If you can afford it go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch.
Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy as big a greenhouse as you can accommodate because I guarantee that no matter how big it VHHPV DW ¿ UVW \RX ZLOO ¿ OO LW You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. It’s important to have level foundations 22 HARWORTH TODAY
I arrange my greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for my tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so I can collect rainwater. It’s my little haven in February; where I plant seeds and imagine what my garden will look like in a three months’ time.
