DM ELECTRICAL Welcome to
the FEBRUARY 2015 edition
Last time I wrote my introductionthere were still 2 weeks to go until Christmas, which now seems like months ago. I did of course, despite my concerns, manage to get done everything that needed to be done before Christmas. Much of my January seems to have been spent considering different kitchens, thinking about layouts, assessing different appliances and explaining our plans to various builders, electricians and kitchen designers. It is approaching 10 years since we moved into our current house, (which is the longest I have ever lived anywhere) and I have been thinking I would like a new kitchen for most of that time. Hopefully 2015 will be the year that I make that happen, but at my current rate of decision making, maybe not! Please come and say hello if you are visiting the Business Showcase at Doncaster Racecourse on Thursday 26th February. It is free to attend and there are over 200 exhibitors of which Today Publications will be one of them! A great place to meet new contacts, suppliers and service providers, for anyone in business or who is considering starting a business.

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The Group met for the first time in 2015, and wished everyone a Happy New Year. The Christmas lunch at Styrrup Hall Golf Club had once again been a success, and was already booked for 16 December 2015. At this event the Group had celebrated the 90th birthday of one of it’s members, Tommy Bennett. He and his wife had thoroughly enjoyed this surprise celebration and thanked the group. Plans are afoot for outings for 2015, including Chatsworth House and Bakewell for the Christmas celebrations, a possibility of a trip to Beamish, and, of course, the pantomime at Retford Majestic. A trip to London, with a tour of the Houses of Parliament is also being considered. More details of all trips to be announced later. There are also plans for a coffee morning, with the funds raised from this going towards a production for our local schoolchildren in the Town
Friends of Cast It is over a year since the new multi-space performance venue opened in the centre of Doncaster. Cast, situated on Sir Nigel Gresley Square, has seen large audiences enjoy a wide and varied programme of music, theatre, dance and family entertainment. Anyone who was lucky enough to attend the recent pantomime will know what a welcoming place Cast is, great for families but also providing opportunities to attend high quality live performances for people of every age and interest. Cast is above all a friendly place. In recent weeks, a small group of regular audience members have been meeting with the idea of 4

Hall. We will also be holding a coffee morning for the Bassetlaw Hospice, and also the ever popular Big MacMillan Coffee morning in September. The Group continues to work with BDC, A1 Housing, the Town Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Police, to combat littering, dog fouling and anti social behaviour. New members are always made welcome, and we would particularly like to see younger members who would then be able to step up to help run this group. We also welcome ethnic minorities, and disabled access is provided for those with disabilities. Our meetings take place on the first Tuesday of each month, in the Devonshire Road Community Centre, starting at 10.30 am. So, come along. You never know what you might learn, and you could even win a raffle prize. Refreshments are available.
setting up a formal Friends Organisation to support Cast as it develops and simply enjoy being more involved with the venue. We would now like to invite people from across Doncaster and further afield to join with us and develop this idea further. If you’d like to join this new group, meet new friends or perhaps be involved in the organisation of this new group, we’d love to hear from you. Membership is open to anyone 18 or over and is free, although a small administrative charge will be required to pay for postage and administration. Harworth Colliery Football Club November Update Hello and Happy new year to everyone. Since our last update back in December the club has seen a huge turn around in results for all three of our Saturday senior sides. The first team at the time of writing have lost just 1 in 17 games and won their last 6 games on the spin, 5 of these away from home. This run of results has seen us transform our season from third bottom at the end of September to now third in the league. We are still in both cups and won the Team of the Month for the Central Midlands League for December. This has all been down to hard work on and off the field by both players and Management who can all feel proud of their efforts. We will now be looking for a strong end to the season and see where it takes us. The December player of the Month was won by Gregg Archer so congratulations to him.
themselves fourth in the table. It hasn’t been easy as we have found a lot of the younger lads appear to have turned their back on the game and the club which is a huge concern, but we have tried all we can, so it has been left to a number of lets say more experienced players to ensure the Colts have a team every week. The dissapointing thing is that the Colts was only kept in as a team to ensure the Younger generation have an outlet to perform but that hasn’t worked out how we hoped so will be looking at shaking things up next season The Juniors have had an up and down few months and have been frustrated with the number of postponements with the weather. The Under 13’s are still top but the Under 14’s have been on an awful run which they will be looking to turn round and have a good end after what was a very promising start.
We are still very much looking to add teams to our Junior set up and although there are the players we find them playing mainly at Bawtry and Tickhill. We need all to know that if anybody has any interest in starting a new team for whatever age group the club will support them in every The Reserves has also we can. We will get people through Safeguarding and seen an encouraging turn coaching as well as affiliation fees and Kit, we just need around losing just 1 of people to get Involved. It grieves all of us that parents are their last 7 league games. having to pay upto £100 for their child to play for another This has seen them also village when we have better facilities, just not enough move up to third and people willing to put the time in. If interested and want after having to cancel a to talk through anything just get in touch, we need you. game due to not enough players back in October All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on this seemed a long way Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us away and we are now on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page, keep turning looking up rather than up through the gates as it is hugely appreciated by everyone down. Another piece of associated with the club. good news is the recent
Investment by Jones Homes who are the new Shirt Sponsors for the Reserves. They are now sporting a cracking new kit and we hope that Jones’s will be supporters of the club for years to come. It really is a perfect fit for the club and we wish the new development on Scrooby Road all the very best. In the picture are four of our most promising young players, left to right Brett Garrett, Makenzie Tomlinson, Danny Siddall and Lewis Francis, Jones Homes Sales Advisor Maria Colborn. Many thanks to all at Jones Homes for their support.

community The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Changes in booking appointments The Practice Manager Russell Gardner has been working with the practice over the past 10 months in an attempt to reduce the number of instances of appointments being booked, but not attended, and to maximise the number of appointments available for all sectors of the patient population. This has been in place since December 1st 2014 and seems to be working well. The practice is aware that it is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution but it has been implemented on balanced feedback from our patient community. The practice will be reintroducing the facility to book online appointments from April 2015, this service was suspended prior to the practice manager starting, however there is a commitment to provide this service. Patient feedback or lack of it. We often receive feedback from patients which we pass to the Practice Manager but more often when approached it is with questions of procedure. All very understandable. Most times the answers can be found on the practice website thetickhillsurgery. co.uk or thecollierysurgery.co.uk. However we all can now pass on our feelings and opinions about our medical appointments every time we have a medical appointment and do it anonymously. There are forms at reception or it can be done online, through www.iwantgreatcare.org if you need help to complete the form ask at reception. This system has been operational since November 1st but as of December not one person had given feedback.
Thoughts on the safety of ASDA car park I would like to ask the people of Bircotes and Harworth whether they think that the ASDA car park is suitably laid out so as to be safe to motorists and pedestrians. Personally I think that the whole layout is dangerous and feel that a nasty accident is only a matter of time in the making. The hairpin bend near to the entrance is most difficult to negotiate at busy time especially when the side parking bays are full. Two way traffic here is almost impossible at times and shoppers walking to and from their cars have to dodge cars making the very tight turn. The side parking bays are designed such that people often park too many cars in there and rear ends stick out far too far and make things more
The form asks “Did you get great care today?” and has questions such as 1 How likely are you to recommend this practice to friends and family if they need similar care or treatment? 2 What was good about your care? What could be improved? 3 Were you involved in enough decisions about your care and treatment? 4 Was the surgery clean? 5 Were the receptionists helpful? 6 It is easy to get an appointment either by telephone or at the surgery? Mistake by the Care Quality Commission Rectified The statistics and banding initially put out by CQC and reported in the local press have been corrected and altered but without much publicity. The result is that along with other surgeries Tickhill and Colliery surgery has been re-banded upwards. However no inspection or visit has yet taken place. The British Medical Association is unhappy that any banding has taken place without an inspection or visit having occurred and without any reference to the demographics of the patients on role. Reminder February 6th 2015 is The British Heart Foundation Join the Nation day. They invite us all to wear red and donate, attend or host an event to raise money for lifesaving research. WEAR IT. BEAT IT. FIGHT FOR EVERY HEARTBEAT. Free fundraising Kits are available at:-bhf.org.uk/red or you can call 0300 330 0645
Jan Hart dangerous. The hairpin in the corner furthest from the door is the worst to negotiate when busy, if a large vehicle parks on the corner then exiting the car park is really dangerous to drivers and pedestrians. Lastly, the side road leading from the far hairpin leads out right onto oncoming traffic coming around the corner across from the petrol station. This too is dangerous. I suspect that many readers have had near misses in this car park. I have written to Asda through their "Contact Us" page on their web site, and asked them to review the layout with a view to making it safer. I would urge readers to do the same before a nasty accident occurs. Anyone wishing to contact me regarding this matter can do so by emailing me at mannifield@hotmail.com Thank you, Dave. T

Methodist Dear Friends,
Minister
Many of us remember the month of February for the obvious reason of Valentine’s Day. It is the day that many people in the world celebrate love. Wonder how many of us really mean it when we tell people whom we know that we love them. There is a story of a young man who was speaking on the phone with his fiancé. As he was ending the conversation, he said to her, “I love you”. Then he concluded, “I’ll see you tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain”. I wonder what kind of love depends on the weather? There is another story (in the bible) of a young boy who gave his lunch of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes to Jesus and his disciples to be used to feed a multitude of people. This boy teaches us that love is all about sacrificing our most valuable resources (including time) for the benefit of others. The greatest example of love is our generous God who gave his only Son to the world in order to save it from sin (John 3: 16). He gave in order to restore the world and our relationship with him. God takes tiny things in our lives and multiply them for the benefit of others. As we reflect on ‘love’ in the month of February, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite people living in Tickhill and its environs to a session on ‘the love of God’ at Tickhill Methodist Church on Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February 2015, at 2.30 p.m. It is a form of gathering, which some people call “Messy Church”. The label describes what it is – messy. It involves games, art and craft, food and a talk. Anyone of any age and gender is welcome because every activity appeals to everybody. It’s basically having fun for a couple of hours with the family in a chapel every second Saturday of the month. I wonder if you can give it a try this month. Back to the issue of God’s love, a small gift can go a long way in God’s economy. No wonder Tesco has its motto, ‘every little helps’. I wonder if I can chip in to inform readers who live in Rossington and its environs that the Foodbank is opening a satellite centre at the Baptist Church at the Holmescarr Community Centre soon. Watch out for more information from your local news centres. This month, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to ask you to review your giving by giving generously to those who are in need of food and other resources. For those of you, who are also hungry for more of God in your life this year, be reminded that you can turn to Jesus who is the bread of live. He knows you already and is yearning to have a great relationship with you. Bring your stretching situation to him now for he is ready to listen. Happy Valentine’s Day greetings. My prayer for you, your family and friends is that this year, God’s blessings will abound in your lives. Yours’ sincerely, Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T

GRASS ROOTS Don’t try to be too clever with your garden... I read this statement the other day that ‘Gardens are not just plants’ which got me thinking about the contribution that plants do bring to the garden. I’ve seen many different styles of garden in my time, from the ones that have just a single plant in them to those with thousands. So can you have a garden without plants? Although I know of no official description of a garden, I believe that plants are the defining element. A garden without plants, even just weeds, is incomplete and not seen as a garden in the eyes of the majority. A greatly illustrative and somewhat whacky example of this was seen in James May’s show garden at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show. James May, presenter of the BBC’s TV programme Top Gear, presented a full sized show garden made entirely of children’s modeling clay. It was very well done, with each plant, flower, rock, bench and even water feature crafted to its correct size, through accurate observation and careful construction, but no one, not even for one second, looked at it in the same way as the other, living, show gardens. What made this show garden even more interesting was watching the reaction of the people who were looking at it. It was quite clear from the majority of their body language that they had made their decision about whether it was a ‘real’ garden or not very quickly and at a sub conscious level. In fact the decision was made so fast that few realized that there was a decision to be made or that they had made it. All they knew was that this particular garden was just an amusing talking point with nothing in it that they could relate to.
as to what should be found in a garden. It is generally considered that these expectations of a garden are formed by and based on childhood experiences or surroundings but even though this makes the criteria of individuals vastly different, every single person expects to see plants in one form or another in a garden, regardless of what else is or is not there, because plants are a part of nearly every single type of outside environment on earth. The upshot of this is that you have a very specific criteria at a sub conscious level of what should be in your garden, which you must stick to if you want it to be enjoyable. Beware of buying that ‘novelty’ something if it doesn’t fit in with your sub conscious criteria and if that sounds like I’m stating the obvious, just think back to some of the purchases you’ve made in the past. This is an extract from Sally Tierney's new book ‘Your Enjoyable Garden - The 3 essential steps to start and keep a garden that is always enjoyable and beautiful’, available January 2015. Written by Sally Tierney MSGD BSc (Hons),. She specializes in making the most of the space in small to medium sized gardens through the use of good design and the right plants. She passionately believes that no garden should become a burden on its owners and so she goes to great lengths to design a garden that fits in with the client’s life style, not the other way round. You can see pictures of successful gardens on her website here www. yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk
I think this reaction occurred because the elements of the modelled garden did not match up to the criteria that every single person has, at a sub conscious level, 22

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - FEBRUARY 2015 YOU CARVED THEIR NAMES WITH PRIDE Harworth and Bircotes Town Council has been notified by English Heritage that the Cenotaph and its surrounding area on Main Street, Old Harworth has been given Grade Two listed status. This is a matter of some importance to Council and members of our community. Our thanks go to the gentleman who nurtures the plants he places around the cenotaph but who prefers to stay anonymous, plus a special mention for Joyce Letherland and her work in keeping the Cenotaph tidy and weed-free. REFUSE COLLECTION AND INCLEMENT WEATHER The recent poor weather did affect the refuse collection rounds, especially those in the Worksop area scheduled for Saturday 27th December. There were 25 roads which the refuse vehicles were not able to access due to snow; this in turn put the men collecting refuse on a ‘catch-up’ programme. We all acknowledge that the snowfall had an impact on everyone, but I do know that the BDC staff have worked especially hard to maintain services in very testing conditions. Ask yourself: would you want to do this job? I think we have a very good refuse 24
collection service in Bassetlaw. Gritting Roads and Paths Both Cllr. Brian Letherland and County Cllr. Sheila Place approached Highways about gritting in our Town. The response was as follows:• Priority is given to ‘A’ roads, there are many of them in Nottinghamshire, and none in Harworth and Bircotes. • Bus routes and secondary roads are gritted only when the A roads are considered to be safe and clear of snow and ice I do know that A1 gritted some paths/entrances where there are OAP bungalows and sheltered accommodation such as Westmoreland House. THE COLLIERY SITE, THE TOWERS, AND THE BUSINESS CASE I was surprised to find the small tower had disappeared, though I did know there are plans for both towers to be demolished. Council has not been given dates for any of this work, though we do now have a plan from Harworth Estates indicating demolition work
on the colliery site as Phase One (the towers) and other buildings on the site (Phase Two). The plan shows that only the building that houses the methane pump will remain. Why is this work necessary? Harworth Estates is a company whose main asset is land – land that is mainly situated around redundant colliery sites. To remain viable, the company has to use/develop their key asset, and they have done this successfully in several areas e.g. Treeton, Orgreave and hope to repeat this in Harworth and Rossington. These old colliery brownfield sites require remediation work in order to attract developers and funding, and this means clearing sites, removing toxic soil and addressing existing industrial drainage systems such as balancing ponds – all very expensive. I am aware that some residents want the larger tower to stay, but ask yourself: if you were in

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED charge of Harworth Estates, would you expect a developer to build next to a large tower? How would you be able to meet the continuing costs of maintenance of structures when no other significant income was generated from that site? The reality is that the site represents a cost pressure that can be turned into a significant capital receipt, and the fundamental rules of business means that Harworth Estates have no choice but to opt for future site development. But this is about more than just profit. Some of you may know that the sale of land to Jones Homes on Scrooby Road released monies to be used for the community; Harworth Estates, supported by this Council, were keen that such money should be invested towards replacing Serlby Park Academy – a question of identifying and addressing a high priority and area of need, we believe. This approach will be replicated elsewhere as the colliery site is developed, hence the commitment from Harworth Estates to see not just houses there, but specific community facilities and green areas, too.
A NEW TOWN CLERK January is the month Council has to interview for a new Town Clerk because Steve Bowman, the current post holder, is retiring 31st May. Appointing a Town Clerk is a lengthy business because there is usually a requirement to give notice of 3 months to the current council/employer. What are we looking for? Someone with vision, a proven track record in financial management and fund raising, and someone up to the challenge of driving the growth, development and improvement agenda for Harworth and Bircotes. Steve will be a tough act to follow; he has been a great asset to this community and will be greatly missed. CEMETERY HOUSE Many of you will be aware that Council has placed Cemetery House on the market. The truth is that the days of tied housing have gone and therefore Council took the decision to sell the house. Not everyone wants to live next to a cemetery, though it has never caused me a problem or anyone else living at the lower end of Bawtry Road, and as my Mum tells me, “it’s not the dead who hurt you, only the living”. Talking of which, who has been raiding the boxes holding rock

salt that are sited around the Town? When needed during the Christmas snowfall, all had been emptied and one box torn from its foundations. Yes, they were refilled, but those residents who really needed the salt e.g. on Baulk Lane and Herriot Close, were left without. UPDATE ON AIREY HOUSING NEW BUILD A1 tell me the building work is on schedule despite the recent bad weather; I understand is that the first houses will be ready by July. Interestingly, the builders have unearthed a few old coins and a long-handled silver spoon. They are also impressed by the quality of the sand they are finding under the top soil – nothing new to local residents who are keen gardeners. BUILDING WORK AT SERLBY PARK ACADEMY. I am told big yellow diggers have been spotted on the field next to the school; hopefully this is a signal that the long awaited new school will become a reality. Chair H&B Town Council BANKING IN HARWORTH & BIRCOTES Last week I came across an article in one of the National Newspapers about Banking in the UK , which gave the following facts: * In the last 10 years more than 2,600 branches have been closed, which has left 9,300 remaining. * Last year was a record year: 470 Branches were permanently closed, which left 121 Towns without alternative banking facilities, and there are plans to close a further 300 branches over the next 3 years. A spokesman for the Campaign for Community Banking said that the situation was bleak and would get worse. The Banks say branch Closures are due to the growing popularity of on-line banking, and mergers within the Industry. I am sorry to say the chances of persuading a bank to open a Branch in H&B seems very remote, but as always we will keep trying

TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB We have enjoyed a busy and very successful Christmas period including more than two weeks of escorting Santa around the local area. With the weather in our favour large numbers of children and adults turned out to enjoy seeing Santa and chatting to him or one of his helpers. Many youngsters left letters advising him that they had been very good and telling him what they would like for Christmas. Our sincere thanks for the generous donations made by so many local residents and children. Many thanks also to the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Grand Jeep Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh round in fine style.
Adam’s parents continue to look for sponsorship to facilitate travel and accommodation for tournaments and can be contacted by email on gittingspaul@btinternet.com During December we made a donation of £700 to the Surestart Centre in Rossington to cover the cost of twenty hampers to assist local families over Christmas. To keep up to date between our monthly reports in the Today Magazines please like our Facebook page on www.facebook.com/tickhill.lions Lion Phil Thomas T
Thanks are also due to the many local businesses which donated prizes for our Grand Christmas Draw held at the Carpenter’s Arms in Tickhill on Tuesday 16th December. In all there were 72 prizes in the draw. The willing support of local businesses means a lot to us all. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. Back in the Autumn we assisted a disabled student at Rossington All Saints School with his aim of progressing to national standard in table tennis. A grant of £500 has enabled Adam Gittings, who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, to travel to Slough, Harlow and Liverpool where he won Gold Silver and Bronze medals in the Slough Disability Grand Prix, two Golds in the BATTS Essex Disability Grand Prix and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Merseyside Disability Open. These performances have enhanced Adam’s ranking as the number one Class 11 Junior player in the country and number two Class 11 Senior player. Adam has been offered a place in September 2015 at the Bristol Table Tennis Academy where he would receive coaching from international players and coaches alongside his further education studying Sport and Exercise Science at HND level. He plays locally in Doncaster, Sheffield, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe and has tournaments coming up in the next couple of months in Southampton and Bristol.
