Rose Farm Residential Rose FarmHome Residential Home

And so, we welcome another year. . .2018 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always, I planned to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, like all the best laid plans, as I write this with just 10 days left to go, I have 5 magazines to finish, cards to write, shopping still to do, not forgetting 2 bedrooms mid-way through being decorated. But at least I’ve not moved house this December, last year was the last time I will do that in December! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation. The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th January. 2018 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. Wishing you a Peaceful 2018. Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Could yoga help you improve your health in 2018? For many, the end of one year and start of the next, is a time for reflection and aspiration. We look back at what we’ve done and think about what we’d like to do or achieve for the New Year. The truth is, however, no matter what any of us want to do – we need our health to be able to enjoy life to the full. My Mum used to say, you can have all the money in the world, but without your health you have nothing. She was a wise lady!

Shona Garner is a fully qualified, experienced teacher, running regular classes, and 6 week programmes (for beginners; for healthy back and core, and for stress) in the Tickhill, Cantley and Bawtry areas. If you’d like information about any of these courses then contact Shona on shona@yogaover45.co.uk or Tel: 07904 262877, or visit: www.yogaover45.co.uk

As a yoga teacher with a special interest in teaching students in mid-life or later years, I find many of my students have niggling pains or conditions which, if neglected, would hinder their plans and prevent them from living life to the full. Getting older does not automatically have to come with getting sicker. Yoga can help you improve your strength, flexibility and your general well-being and, unlike many forms of exercise, is accessible to just about anyone – regardless of age or physical health. From gentle stretches to movements which help strengthen your muscles, improve your posture and relieve the stress or tension so many of us can experience in day to day life, learning and practising yoga might be one of the most beneficial things you could do for yourself in 2018. Whether you make New Year resolutions or not, you have plans; things you love to do; people you want to spend time with – and the last thing you need is your health to prevent you from doing those things. Maybe giving yoga is worth a try? And the beauty of yoga is, once you learn some basics, you need no special equipment – and you can practise easily at home: honestly, a few minutes a day can make a significant difference to your health and general well-being. So, search out a class you feel might be suitable for you – try more than one teacher or style – sometimes it takes time to find the teacher who is the right “fit” for you – but it’s worth looking! And know that you could be on the way to forming a new habit which can massively change your health for the better!

Yoga Near You for the New Year Classes start week commencing 15th January • Yoga for beginners courses at Bawtry, Tickhill or Cantley. • Ask about Yoga for Stress and Yoga for healthy back courses – (Run in Tickhill and Cantley.) • Regular classes also in Tickhill or Cantley • Join our full day retreat: Bawtry on Saturday 20th January For anyone in mid- life or later years OR if you’re looking for a gentler approach. OPEN BETWEEN

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association On Tuesday the Group held their last meeting of 2017. There were fewer members present than normal, due to Christmas shopping and illness. Chair told members that we now have the necessary licence to enable us to sell raffle tickets legally in the future. There was a discussion about the insistence of A1 Housing and Bassetlaw District Council (along with many other organisations) that everyone should have access to a computer. They assume that even the elderly are computer savvy, or that they have family nearby to assist them. One case in point was bidding for properties. It is now only possible to bid for council properties online, and can no longer be done by telephone or in person. Another case was the recent survey, which all council tenants were asked to complete. The letter stated that it could be done either online, by telephone or in person at any A1 Housing Office. One elderly gentleman had travelled from Misterton to Harworth only to find there was no-one in the information office to assist him. It was also noted that the advertised surgeries with A1 Housing’s Neighbourhood Housing Officer were not taking place. In fact, she had not been present at the Information Office on Scrooby Road for many weeks. This will be raised by our Chair at a meeting with senior officers of A1 Housing. We would like to see her come along to one of our meetings and introduce herself to our Group, in order that we might recognise her. All agreed that the Christmas Lighting Event had been a huge success this year, and we would be sending £300 raised on our stalls at this event to Bassetlaw Hospice, in memory of our friend Sue Mann. The trip to York Christmas market had been enjoyed by all – a better outing than the one to Manchester last year. PC Jim Martin was present to talk about the telephone and on-line scams currently around. His advice is that if it seems too good to be true, then it 10 HARWORTH TODAY

He also ran through the crime statistics and court appearances for the month, and this is reproduced elsewhere in this magazine. A Town Councillor said that several members of the public had attended the recent Town Council meeting and they had praised the Lighting Event as the best ever. They particularly liked the Ice Rink and the film shows. They hoped that the ice rink would be back next year, and that the film shows would be a regular feature. Council would like this to continue but do need some volunteers, and people’s views on the type of films, and regularity of the showings. A date has been set for next year’s lighting event – 30 November, and 1 and 2 December 2018. The outdoor events area should be completed by May 2018, and so will be in use for the Lighting Event. The site where the old Airey homes have been demolished has changed the outlook for many households in that area. Bungs have been left by the developers to deter “travellers” and this is currently being used by local youngsters as a play area/cycle track. It is not known, as yet, when houses will be built on this land. Chair and Committee wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The first meeting of 2018 will take place on Tuesday 9 January 2018, when all comers are welcome. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

for the Age Concern Coffee Shop at the Community Centre, Devonshire Road, Harworth

As is tradition at this time of year, we have been reflecting on 2017 at the club and WOW, what a year! This year saw our first swim-a-thon raising £583 for Save The Children, and we held our first ever Club Championships, made possible with support from Tickhill & District Lions. We expanded the club into a younger age group with our new Sea Horses sessions for swimmers still at swimming lessons stage. We supported 10 of our swimmers aged 13-16 through their Aquatic Helper training so when not in the pool themselves, they come on poolside to help train the younger swimmers. We entered our first Masters competitions with one of our coaches, Steve Watkins, achieving a county qualifying time and our Head Coach, Ericka Willis, held the fastest time for breaststroke in the county in her age group. We saw 12 of our swimmers be selected to join Bassetlaw Swim Squad, a new collaboration focussing on producing national, regional & county swimmers. There was a huge increase in swimmers qualifying for the 2018 County Championships, 20 events so far compared to just 6 last year. Not to mention the land training, time trials, galas, coffee mornings, fun swims…..2017 was certainly busy! No amateur sports club can function without a huge amount of support and we’d like to thank the Parents for all the lifts, towel washing, cheering on at galas etc., the young Aquatic Helpers for their assistance on poolside, our Committee for their time, BPL Bircotes for hosting us, our Swimmers for continually delighting us and of course we’d really like to thank our Coaches - Ericka, Sue, Guy, Steve & Lee, you are all stars and we’d be nothing without your passion for swimming.

Eleven of our lucky GCSE Drama students were given the opportunity to spend the day working with James Worthington, Director of TailGate Theatre. In just six hours, students from Years 10 and 11 brought “Bonnets and Breeches”, the winning entry in this year’s North Notts Short Story Competition, to life. The story was written by Elizabeth Carney-Marsh and is based on the experiences of the Land Girls who worked at Clumber Park during WW1.

All their hard work was put to the test when they performed the piece outdoors at Bassetlaw Museum, as part of ‘Meet the Authors’ Book Launch event for the Short Story collection. It was the perfect setting for the performance, as it created an authentic atmosphere for

Fundamental Fundraising in aid of charity…

Students and staff at the Elizabethan got together to fundraise for various charities: Seven Year 11 students put their best foot forward in aid of the

Samaritans shoe box appeal. They took no time at all to rally support from each of the Elizabethan Houses, requesting a shoebox from each of the school’s 40 forms. Through hard work and determination they went into each and every tutor group supporting, collating and aiding each and every shoebox, then spent their break and lunchtimes ensuring each box was gift wrapped and complete. A fantastic achievement by the magnificent seven. Following Operation Christmas Child was the Children in Need appeal which, saw the whole school rally round raising funds. Students and staff took part in various events throughout the day: the treasure hunt was a great success as was the chance to win Pudsey in our special bear raffle. As always the cake sale was the highlight and raised a treat or two for the appeal. The day wasn’t just about Pudsey, as the Elizabethan were also fundraising for Crohns and Colitous UK, a charity chosen by the students. A whopping £918 was raised and divided between the two charities. Principal, Christine Horrocks was astounded at the amount raised... n

“I would like to thank everyone connected with the school for their support in 2017 & wish you all a happy, Christine Horrocks healthy and successful new year!”

Tickhill and District Lions Club May we start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held at the Carpenters Arms, Tickhill on December 12th. To the companies and friends who donated prizes, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets-thank you very much. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill, Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth, Loversall, Rossington and Wadworth area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. It is wonderful to see the looks on the faces of the young children when they meet Santa. You can rest assured that every penny you donated will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. ALL SAINT’S CHURCH, HARWORTH – serving

Harworth & Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley

Dear Readers Wishing you all a very happy new year and praying that 2018 will bring joy, peace and the blessings of God to all in our parish and community. January will be a very special month for our church and community and what an amazing start we will have to the New Year. Two years’ ago, Gerald Holian had an inspirational idea to install a miner’s stained glass window in church as a lasting legacy to the miners of our community. A very proud moment for everyone involved. As you know Gerald raised all the money £17,000 from the generosity of the people of our community.

MINERS STAINED GLASS WINDOW YOU ARE INVITED TO ATTEND a special service in church on Sunday 28th January, 2018 at 1.30pm to dedicate the Miners Stained Glass Window This special occasion will be followed by presentations and refreshments in the Town Hall. A special dedication service will take place in church on Sunday 28th January, 2018 at 1.30pm. Bishop Paul, Archdeacon David and other dignitaries will be there to mark the occasion. But more importantly we want you, the miners of the community to attend, this is your window. If any miners attending have a miner’s lamp we would love you to bring it to church and place on the altar, after the service you will be able to take it back with you. We are pulling out all the stops and working really hard to make this an occasion to remember. Please do come 18 HARWORTH TODAY

This display at the Graves Gallery showcases a series of 21 line engravings illustrating the biblical story of Job by visionary, poet and artist, William Blake. Created in 1826, the engravings were commissioned by his friend, the artist John Linnell and depict Job’s faith being tested by Satan. Blake was repeatedly inspired by the Book of Job, viewing Job’s trials and eventual spiritual rebirth as parallel to his own creative struggles. And until 17 March, also in The Graves, Dan Holdsworth ‘Mapping the Limits of Space’ presents the UK premiere of artist Dan Holdsworth’s newest series of images, Continuous Topography, which go on show alongside some of his most significant works from the past seven years. Dan Holdsworth’s latest work combines real and virtual representations of the geological landscape to explore the relationship between photography, science and technology. Created using digital mapping data to expand the photographic process, the images are informed as much by the history and tradition of landscape photography as the latest technological developments. www.museums-sheffield.org.uk

Happy New Year to everyone • Good news - A new GP joined the Practice as a salaried GP in November and some patients will already have met him. Dr Anthony Brownson, who is a very experienced doctor, will be working Monday all day plus Wednesday and Thursday mornings. On behalf of all patients we offer a warm welcome to him and wish him happiness in this role. • The Telephone System at The Colliery Surgery has been upgraded and this has resulted in a new telephone number which is 01302 986666. • Lloyds Pharmacy will no longer be submitting repeat medication requests, to the surgery, on behalf of patients, however, prescriptions can still be taken to be filled there. Patients can order repeat prescriptions on line as well as submitting them via the prescription box in reception. To access the online system patients will need to get secure log-in data from the surgery and will require ID with them when they make the request. Here is a new year message from the NHS for us to consider:-

Self-help tips to fight fatigue –

Many cases of unexplained tiredness are due to stress, not enough sleep, poor diet and other lifestyle factors. Use the following selfhelp tips to restore your energy levels.

• Eat often to beat tiredness

A good way to keep up your energy through the day is to eat regular small meals and healthy snacks every three to four hours, rather than a large meal less often.

• Perk up with exercise

You might feel too tired to exercise, but regular exercise will make you feel less tired in the long run, and you’ll have more energy. Even a single 15-minute walk can give you an energy boost, and the benefits increase with more frequent physical activity.

• Start with a small amount of exercise. Build up your physical activity gradually

24 HARWORTH TODAY

over weeks and months until you reach the recommended goal of two-and-a-half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, such as cycling or fast walking, every week.

• Lose weight to gain energy

If your body is carrying excess weight, it can be exhausting. It also puts extra strain on your heart, which can make you tired. Lose weight and you’ll feel much more energetic. Apart from eating healthily, the best way to lose weight is to be more active and do more exercise.

• Sleep well

It sounds obvious, but two-thirds of us suffer from sleep problems, and many people don’t get the sleep they need to stay alert through the day. The Royal College of Psychiatrists advises going to bed and getting up in the morning at the same time every day; avoid naps through the day, and take time to relax before you go to bed.

• Reduce stress to boost energy

Stress uses up a lot of energy. Try to introduce relaxing activities into your day. This could be working out at the gym, or a gentler option, such as listening to music, reading or spending time with friends. Whatever relaxes you will improve your energy.

• Talking therapy beats fatigue

There’s some evidence that talking therapies such as counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) might help to fight fatigue. See your GP for a referral for talking treatment on the NHS or for advice on seeing a private therapist.

• Cut out caffeine

The Royal College of Psychiatrists recommends that anyone feeling tired should cut out caffeine. It says the best way to do this is to gradually stop having all caffeine drinks (this includes coffee, tea and cola drinks) over a three-week period. Try to stay off caffeine completely for a month to see if you feel less tired without it. You may find that not consuming caffeine gives you headaches. If this happens, cut down more slowly on the amount of caffeine that you drink. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Community The Patient Participation Group Continued... • Drink less alcohol

Although a few glasses of wine in the evening helps you fall asleep, you sleep less deeply after drinking alcohol. The next day you’ll be tired, even if you sleep a full eight hours. Cut down on alcohol before bedtime. You’ll get a better night’s rest and have more energy. The NHS recommends that men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units a week.

• Drink more water for better energy

Sometimes you feel tired simply because you’re mildly dehydrated. A glass of water will do the trick, especially after exercise.

community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Sniff, Sniff! No I don’t have a cold but this month I will be sniffing a lot. Mainly because of my winter-flowering shrubs. Every garden should have a couple of plants which bravely open their petals while winter is doing its worst. Viburnum farreri or Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ or ‘Deben’ are upright shrubs which bear pretty clusters of pink-buds on their bare branches, that open into honey-scented white flowers. They are incredibly tough, withstanding all but the harshest of frost. It’s lovely to cut a few sprigs to stand in a jam jar indoors. My favourite winter flowering shrub is the witch hazel plant Hamamelis mollis. It’s a delightful shuttlecock-shaped bush that explodes with citrus-scented spidery flowers right about now. I have the orange ‘Jelena’ in my garden but the pale yellow ‘Pallida’ and the deep red ‘Ruby Glow’ are equally lovely. My dad had a wonderful winter-flowering honeysuckle in his garden: Lonicera fragrantissima, which I adored. A few years ago I discovered Lonicera x purpussi and fell in 26 HARWORTH TODAY

love. It has creamy white flowers and a really strong scent. Even if you have a tiny garden you’ll have room for a Christmas Box Sarcococca confusa. It produces white whiskery flowers from among its dark shiny evergreen foliage. I have two in pots on either side of my path and I’ve had people stop in their tracks and return back towards the house sniffing, in search of the source of the amazing sweet, heady scent. And don’t forget that there are scented snowdrops and tiny Iris reticulata which are deliciously perfumed too.

Time to get sniffing.

Happy gardening.

Harworth Colliery Football Club January Update Hello and may I start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and trust that you all have had a great Christmas. 2017 has been as ever a very busy one for all involved with the club and we wouldn’t want this any other way. 2018 is set to be even busier and hopefully the club will acheieve its aim of Promotion something we have been waiting 30 years for, but no chickens are being counted just yet and its vital that we support the 1st team as much possible in the coming months as this support grows each year and the two go in hand. I would like to take this chance by thanking all the people who make this club the one it is today, there are too many to mention but you know who you all are and without you we wouldn’t be in the position we are today, so as Chairman I thank you. I would also like to pass my thanks onto the sponsors and those that have backed the club, companies such as Signify that continue year in year out to support us with their time and effort and of course Jones and Co Solicitors, Clay Lane Construction and numerous countless others. One of the things I enjoy about being Chairman is welcoming new businesses and sponsors into our club, they range from local and small to large organisations such as British Sugar who backed us recently with a Community grant of £600. Other new and Local Sponsors that have recently backed the Club are Transdek, they are sponsoring the tracksuit tops for both the Under 8 and Under 10 girls, pictured are Dean Butler 28 HARWORTH TODAY

Also pictured is Andy Cawston of Bolham Lane Garage new Shirt Sponsors of our Under 8’s with coaches Dean and Amy Ellis, lets hope these new relationships extend well into the future. The first team remain top of the table heading into the New Year and have been on a great run at the time of writing, I don’t want to jinx anything but we are well placed for a shot at promotion, something the club has worked hard for both on and off the field for a number of years now, lets hope all that hard work pays off, we do need you though, there will be times when we are up against it and having the support behind them will I’m sure push them on. So keep a look out for the fixtures and come down to the Jones and Co Rec, lets work this as one. All other teams have been busy as we head into the New Year, the Juniors have a bit of a break or some do, the Under 10’s girls have a full calendar this month, playing Huddersfield Town away being the stand out fixture. So again thank you for all you have done in 2017 and lets hope 2018 is our year. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE WARN OF RECENT ONLINE SCAMS How to shop Online Safely :1) Always check you’re on the correct website. Criminals can set up fake websites that have a similar design and web address to the genuine site 2) Web pages you enter personal or financial details into should display a locked padlock sign and have a web address that starts with https. This means your connection to the website is secure. 3) Don’t click on links or attachments within unsolicited emails. The number of online shopping related phishing emails increases significantly during the holiday period. 4) 65% of Action Fraud reports during the 2016 Christmas period were linked to online auction sites. Don’t pay for goods or services by bank transfer unless you know and trust the person. Payments via bank transfer offer you no protection if you become a victim of fraud. CRIMINALS IMPERSONATE POLICE IN FAKE INVESTIGATION SCAM Consumers should be alert to a growing

scam in which criminals pose as police officers and ask their victims to take part in a fake undercover operation. Fraudsters are contacting members of the public, usually by phone, purporting to be from the police, or in some cases the fraud team within their bank. The criminal claims they are investigating a fraud at a local bank branch where staff are suspected of being complicit, including issuing fake bank notes, and asks their target to help in the operation. As part of the scam, the individual is requested to visit the branch and withdraw a substantial sum, often thousands of pounds, of the supposedly counterfeit cash to hand over to the ‘police’ for ‘analysis’. The victim is assured that the money will be deposited back into their account after the operation is complete. However, once the money is passed over the fraudster disappears with the cash. Criminal instructs their victim not to discuss the case with anyone in the branch, giving them plausible explanations as to why they are withdrawing the money. As a result, despite being questioned by the bank staff, the victim takes out the cash, convinced that the staff are part of a fraud. In another version of the scam, the criminal convinces the victim to transfer money to a so-called ‘safe account’ to protect their funds from the ‘corrupt’ bank staff. However, the account is in fact controlled by the criminal. All customers are reminded that the police and banks will never ask members of the public to become part of an anti-fraud operation or to transfer money to a ‘safe account’ for fraud reasons. Katy Worobec, Head of Fraud and Financial Crime Prevention, Cyber and Data Sharing at UK Finance said: “This is a particularly nasty scam as it plays on people’s public-spirited nature to assist the police. We are receiving a growing number of reports of it occurring, with people often losing large amounts of money, so it’s vital that everyone is aware. Remember, the police will never ask you to

community Community withdraw money and hand it over to them for safe-keeping.” Inspector Yvonne Dales from the fraud team at Nottinghamshire Police said: “We’d really like to raise awareness of this scam as much as we can so we’re asking our residents to spread the word and make sure their elderly and vulnerable loved ones are aware of it too. A police officer would never ask you to hand over your cash, even if they were investigating counterfeit notes. Unfortunately, we live in an age where people are not who they say they are so we have to ask people to be suspicious and be sceptical. If you do get asked to do something involving money that doesn’t feel or sound quite right, don’t act right away. End the call and contact us on 101 or call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. If it’s genuine, there won’t be any need for you to act then and there. ADVICE TO CONSUMERS ON HOW TO AVOID THIS SCAM: The police will never ask you to become part of an undercover investigation or for you to withdraw cash and hand it to them for safe-keeping. Be wary of any calls, texts or emails purporting to be from the police asking for your personal or financial details, or for you to transfer money. If you are approached, or feel something is suspicious, hang up the phone and don’t reply. Then report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or website www.actionfraud.org.uk and your bank on their advertised number. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JANUARY 2018

Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine and the Council website. Any queries: contact me or other councillors; we will, as always, try to help. Welcome 2018

Following the hectic buildup to Christmas, this is the time to think about the year ahead. For some it will bring happiness, success; possibly some disappointment and even sadness for other. Whatever 2018 brings, for everyone there will always be challenges and decisions to be made, and this also applies to the Town Council. The local focus for many this year will no doubt be on Simpson Park, but the Council will be working in the background on those ongoing important elements

32 HARWORTH TODAY

that collectively will deliver the bigger picture for the Harworth and Bircotes of the future.

Reaching Out to the Community Remembrance Sunday Despite the bitterly cold wind, local organisations along with several hundred people attended to pay their respects to those lost in conflict. I noticed some parents had brought their children; one small baby boy, snugly sleeping I his pram, had a bright red poppy pinned to his pram quilt – well done that Mum! Organised by the Royal British Legion, the ceremony went well. The vicar delivered a moving ceremony, the bugler did a great job, whilst the Fire Service and Town Council Blocked off the road. Problem: Some of us in the crowd struggled to hear. I recall an occasion in the past when the Council sound system was used, but the wind caused feedback and whistling – a better system is needed. Solved: The Town Council has hired a professional with the right sound system for next year, to ensure everyone can hear and feel involved.

Christmas Extravaganza 1st December This year’s Christmas Extravaganza was a resounding success, with many young people and families taking advantage of the Ice Rink that was in the Town Hall car park for the weekend. The Town Council worked really hard to provide something a little different this year and the feedback has been very positive - so a huge Thank you to all the people that came and supported the event and for also giving us your thoughts for next year’s Christmas Event. Harworth and Bircotes Community Cinema Many of you attended the Community Cinema screenings that were held in the Town Hall, during the Christmas Extravaganza - we hope you enjoyed them. The majority of people that attended said that they thought it was a great idea and asked was this going to be a regular thing the answer is YES if we can get enough people to help run the screenings. If you are interested in getting involved in the Community Cinema please contact Karen

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JANUARY 2018 Tarburton at the Town Hall for more details on 01302 759037.

Update Planning Applications: Outline Application for up to 6 dwellings on land fronting Harworth New Cemetery and adjacent to Styrrup Road. Refused At the last Town Council Meeting, a member of the public asked about a sign for the Miners Memorial. Action: Council has ordered a simple sign, something like ‘Harworth Colliery Memorial Garden 1913 – 2006 ’ Plus we are seeking funds for an interpretation board, which will give much more information about the history of the colliery. At the same meeting, concern was expressed about apprenticeships, especially in the building trade Action: Council has written to Bassetlaw District Council asking that all building companies/developers interested in Harworth and Bircotes should be made aware of the desire to see apprenticeships offered locally; a similar letter has been sent to Harworth Estates. Comment: it really is useful when local people attend council meetings, and not just to reply to questions. We welcome comments and ideas, and we need to know local concerns, no matter how small. Another advantage is that we can clarify some issues. Dispel stories, and best of all, work together. Please keep coming

Sometimes it pays to be patient

To my great delight, at last the forecourt at the block of 4 flats on Beverley Road has been properly constructed, covered with tarmac, and lined. My thanks go to Terry Wells at Bassetlaw District Council who, despite all his experience, had to weave his way through a unique situation to get a positive outcome – not to mention the earache I gave him, though happily he is still speaking to me! This means the tenants have a smart, designated area on which to park, and pedestrians are no longer at risk of slipping on loose gravel.

To Make You Smile

Steering my car into a space in the Town Hall car park, I suddenly braked when I saw a cat in front of me, stretched out lying absolutely still. My heart sank; I assumed the cat must have been knocked over by a car, it also that meant I would have to deal with removing the body – not a pleasant task. Finding another space, I then looked for the little creature but strangely, it had disappeared. Approaching the steps into the building, the cat suddenly reappeared full of life, winding itself around my ankles and purring loudly. What a relief!

Methodist Minister

Dear Friends, The next part of the Lord’s prayer for our discussion is, ‘Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil’. I wonder if you also believe that God is always tempting us so that he can point accusing fingers at us, judge us and then put us into a place where there is ‘gnashing and gnawing of teeth’, which some of us call hell. There are many opinions about temptation but I would want to narrow down on two most popular ones. The first opinion is from the letter of James. Don’t let anyone under pressure to give in to evil say, “God is trying to trip me up.” God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one’s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer. (James 1: 13 – 15 from ‘The Message’). Each of us has the tendency to give in to evil which leads to sin. However, God knows that we are mortal and so he encourages us to depend upon him for strength to overcome sin. “If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins - make a clean breast of them - he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. If we claim that we’ve never sinned, we out-and-out contradict God - make a liar out of him. A claim like that only shows off our ignorance of God” (1 John 1: 8 – 10 from ‘The Message’). The second opinion is that God will always be there for you when you are tempted. “No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it” (1 Corinthians 10: 13 from ‘The Message’).

of it. However, the decision to come out of the trap is yours. You can let him help you or you may want to do it on your own. Most of us have learnt hard lessons about doing things our way. In most cases, they turn out to be worse than we started. Isn’t it therefore interesting for God to remind you that there is help out there and it’s free. Christians believe that trusting in God, through his son Jesus, will be of immense help to you. He will help you to overcome temptation and sin. Friend, I am not suggesting that you will be a perfect ‘holier-than-thou’ person. God will help you fight the bits in your life that you find difficult to deal with. And it is a gradual process so he will never judge you when you fail. God will rather encourage you to come back to him and reason with him about the way forward. By the way, I am not suggesting to you that if you are undergoing any sort of help to overcome a problem then leave it and come to God. God is using most of these agencies and individuals to help you overcome the issues in your life. However, the bottom line is that you can do better if you make the effort to abide by the suggestions that have been given to you. To add to that, may I suggest to you to ask God to help you move forward please? Finally, I wonder if you can take time to pray and ask for God’s help for yourself or anyone who is experiencing difficult circumstances. Let the year 2018 be a blessing to you and others. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam (Methodist Minister - Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough & Tickhill) Tel.: E-mail:
