2017 edition And so we welcome another year … 2017 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always I had such plans to be organised well ahead for Christmas so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, missing things, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! As I mentioned last month I did add an additional challenge to December this year, with our house move which took place over the 8th/9th/10th December. I write this a few days later from our new home, where huge numbers of boxes have been unpacked, but many remain unopened! Christmas cards remain unwritten, presents not bought, never mind wrapped and with 5 magazines to finish – and using mobile broadband as unfortunately we are still waiting for our home broadband connection! So it looks like I will be working and preparing right up to Christmas again! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation.

Gerald Holian attended in order to show the Group the artist’s impression for the proposed stained glass window to commemorate the mining community, to be installed in the Lady Chapel at All Saints Church. He has visited Karen Tarburton who has advised him on ways to access funding, and she will meet with him again to help him get this fundraising underway, using social media as well as more traditional methods. The meeting was also attending by Nicola Perkins who was well known to us when she previously worked for A1 Housing, in her role DV 7HQDQW /LDLVRQ 2ɝ FHU 6KH now works for Nottinghamshire NHS and she invited us to join a group which will give us the opportunity to have our say about any proposed changes within the NHS. She will attend our meetings from time to time, to update us and we will be contacted via social media, email, text or other means. The Christmas Lighting Event had been a success in spite of the usual moaners on social media, who fail to ever give up any of their time to get involved, and make it even better. The trip to Manchester Christmas markets was enjoyed as a day out, but it was overwhelmingly voted as

probably not the best we had attended, due to it being spread out, and leaving us feeling we had missed some of it. We didn’t even lose anyone, surprisingly! Karen Tarburton talked to us again about her role as Community Development Worker for the Town Council. She mentioned that the bunds have now been removed, and the ownership of the land has now been passed to the Town Council. She had held a consultation at the Christmas Lights Event when residents were able to show their preferences for the surfacing and seating proposed for the area, to be known as a Town Square, where we can hold outdoor community events. It is hoped that this will be completed by this time next year. Anyone who did not have the opportunity to be involved in the consultation can visit Karen DW KHU Rɝ FH LQ WKH 7RZQ +DOO She stressed again that this land cannot be used for car parking, and that the council are aware of the need for further car parks in the town, and this is being actively pursued. More news on this at a later date. The Town Council are also looking into the possibility of organising a walking bus, to alleviate the problems outside the Church of England school. The next meeting of the group will be held on Tuesday 3 January 2017, starting at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. The Group wishes everyone and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Harworth Colliery Football Club January 2017! Hello and may I take this oppurtunity to wish all a very Happy New Year and hope you’ve had a great Christmas. It’s an old chestnut but the club has had a very busy few months with new sponsors coming into the club, and also very pleased to announce another new team. For the first time we have an Under 7’s who will take part in the Mini Spring League, big thanks to Dean and Amy Ellis for taking the team on well supported by Adam King. This means that this season alone we have introduced 4 new teams into the club, Under 7’s, 8’s 13’s and a Ladies side who at the time of writing have won every game so the future is certainly looking bright. The 1st team will be looking to kick on in the new Year but face an incredibly difficult month, playing all 5 games in January away from home and all against teams in and around them. This month will determine our season, we have again applied for Promotion so lets hope we come back after the Xmas Break suitably refreshed and ready to take on these challenges.

Other new sponsors we have are Matthew Hancock Decorator who has kindly sponsored the Under 15’s new Training Tops, you can see in the picture Matty’s Mum Lynn who is on the Juniors Committee. All the players would like to thank Matthew for his support, a local lad who played at the Colliery for many years wanting to put a bit back in for the next generation. Good luck with the business and please contact him for any decorating needs you may have.

The remainder of the senior set up have found things more difficult with the reserves and certainly the Under 21’s in very tough leagues, but it is about development and we want all the good young players leaving the Juniors set up to be progressing through to these sides and having a good platform to do so. Away from the field of play we continue to look to improve the grounds facilities, we already have the ground at a standard good enough for promotion but we must always look forward and look to improve, we want everyone coming into the ground to enjoy their experience and ensure we have every amenity that our supportors deserve. We are delighted that we are now into our second year of sponsorship with Jones and Co Solicitors and they continue to back the club after sponsoring the new training tops for all the 1st team players and Match day Volunteers. Also Jones Homes have continued their sponsorship of the Reserves and Raz Patch was on hand to model the new kit paid for by them. It was a pleasure to have him back in November for the short time but we wanted Ryan to be in the photos as he is someone who has progressed through the ranks and now playing in Australia at a great standard.

New Images Photography has also come on board and Nicola Watson is now the Clubs official Photographer, Nicola will take in as many games as she can in her busy schedule and all the photos are published on our website and Social Media Pages, we want the club to be as professional as possible and people like Nicola coming on board and the Sponsors we have backing the club we really are a Club going in the right direction. Last but not least big thank you to the Local Aldi store for allowing our Under 13’s and some of the 9’s In to bag pack in December raising £308.12, a great amount and thank you to all who gave so generously. All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page, keep turning up through the gates as it is hugely appreciated by everyone associated with the club. Sheffield Theatres until Saturday 21st ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ runs at the Crucible and in the Lyceum you will find Swan Lake (St Petersburg Classical Ballet), Sister Act and Blood Brothers – but not all on the stage together…. The galleries are usually busy with people; they do a lot of Children’s activities in the galleries which brings in whole families. People were scratching their heads trying to unlock the meaning and make sense of the objects on show, just as you might with a cupboard full of random objects, this show is a bit of a detective game, there are lots of clues, but one isn’t sure where it’s leading, but the experience is not an unpleasant one. You can hear Helen in conversation about her work on Wed 25 Jan at 6pm booking required. Also until 19 March, there is a show made up of works from the marvelous Cambridge Kettles Yard (which is having a make-over), it’s always a joy to see a wall of Alfred Wallace’s paintings. www.hepworthwakefield.org York Art Gallery y until 19 March a major exhibition ‘FLESH’ including works

Family Candlelit Carol Service REVEREND CANNON WALKER warmly welcomed students, staff, parents and governors to the Elizabethan annual Christmas Carol Service at St Swithun’s Church. Our award winning choir started proceedings with their beautiful rendition of My Christmas Tree, followed by a selection of poignant readings and carols. The highlight of the evening were the wonderful songs sung by our Family Choir, with students from Carr Hill Primary School and the Elizabethan. They sang ‘Christmas is a time to

love’ and ‘Walking in the Air’. Academy Principal, Christine Horrocks gave thanks to all involved in the evening and spoke about the true meaning of Christmas and the important role our children play in our future, quoting Nelson Mandela “Our children are the rock on which our future will be built, our greatest asset as a nation. They will be the leaders of our country, the creators of our national wealth, those who care for and protect our people.” She wished everyone a very happy and Peaceful Christmas and New Year. NEW YEAR GREETINGS TO EVERYONE. We hope you have managed to avoid the two viruses that seemed so prevalent in November and December. Patients are reminded that all patients with Sickness and Diarrhoea should avoid contact with others outside their home, for 48 hours after the last symptom or episode. Information from the Practice The Practice wished us to pass on their thanks to all patients who attended the surgery to have their vaccination against influenza or ‘ flu jab’. Having your vaccination at your GP’s surgery allows staff to check your medical record for any contra-indications before the procedure as well as entering the vaccination, if given, on to your medical record at the time.Â

If you don’t have weighing scales at home then most chemists have scales and height measuring devices for use by the public. Next month we will look at Blood Pressure readings. If you are interested in joining The Patients’ Group or which to contact us with comments or questions you can do so via the comments box in either surgery or by email at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com

Dear Friends, Many people may have their Christmas cards in their living rooms and some people may have the scraps from the turkey and &KULVWPDV SXGGLQJ WR Č´ QLVK +HQFH Ζ ZRQGHU if I can cast our minds back to Christmas and consider the nativity scene again. This time I wonder if we can focus on the young woman Mary. I wonder what would have happened if Mary had said ‘no’ to the angel who visited her to announce the birth of Jesus through her. Just from the start, the odds were against her. She was a young girl engaged to Joseph. Both of them lived in a tiny village called Nazareth. I wonder if you can imagine how life in the countryside in Palestine could be at that time. People held dear to the Laws of Moses and other religious rules. Hence, for a young girl to be pregnant before marriage must be against the ‘norm’ of the day. It could be similar to Victorian Britain. She risked facing shame, gossip in the village, and probably being rejected by her family and the entire village. What about her relationship with Joseph? He was getting ready to marry a virgin girl but not someone who was pregnant already. Saying ‘yes’ to the angel’s request was therefore a big decision for a young girl who did not know what the future was going to be. I wonder if I can use this opportunity to remind folks that we are just entering a new year. I may have to stop and wish you a happy new year now. However, for some of you, this year may not be happy because of some decisions you may have to take. You may say ‘yes’ to a promotion in a job or to a marriage proposal. These moves may cost you a strain in some other relationship. Garden View

By Rachel h l Leverton

The Big g Garden Bird Watch In the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days. Birds d play l a vitall role l in our gardens’ d ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to wind-fall fruits. If you’d like to attract more birds to your garden there are several things to consider. Lots of people hang up a bag of peanuts when the weather turns grim then become disheartened as it hangs there unused. So here are my handy tips. Food - When I was a child my dad told me to only feed birds in the winter, but now the experts advise putting out food all year round. There is a dizzying array of bird food available but a good VWDUWHU PL[ LQFOXGHV VXQČľ RZHU VHHGV FDQDU\ seed, hemp and husk-free oats. Use a good tubestyle feeder and clean it regularly as a build-up of bacteria and old food can kill birds. If squirrels are a problem you can by rodentproof feeders. I also have one tube-feeder which is set within a sort of cage which keeps larger birds out, letting the smaller ones access the food unimpeded. Protect birds from prowling cats by planting something prickly and groundhugging around the bird table or feeder – Berberis darwinii is a good one, but you can also FRQIRXQG FDWV ZLWK D FROODU ZKLFK Č´ WV DURXQG the bird table stand and prevents them from jumping up. Water - A supply of clean water is very important for drinking and bathing. A sloping bath is best WR DFFRPPRGDWH GLÎ? Plants - Birds like cover so plant shrubs, trees and climbers. If you can manage it a mixed hedge RI KDZWKRUQ KROO\ GRJ URVH DQG URZDQ RÎ? HUV cover and food, and is also very pretty. Train honeysuckle and ivy over arches and pergolas. Pyracantha’Soleil d’Or’, Cotoneaster frigidus ‘Cornubia’ and rambling roses that will produce lots of rosehips are great for house walls and fences. If you have room for a tree try the bird cherryy (Prunus ( padus) p ) or a crab apple pp such as Malus ‘John Downie’. Nesting - Dozens of bird species make use of nest boxes. Put up new boxes now because birds use the winter to scope out good breeding spots. If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them. Come the spring put out some extra nesting material for them to grab: sheep wool, pet hair, wool scraps can all be pushed inside a wire cage or a terracotta pot Hopefully this has given you some ideas. And don’t forget to take part in The Big Garden Bird watch on January 28th and 29th Happy Gardening TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Hello my name is Jenson, and I'm looking for a new home and a family to love me, and for me to love you too.

8

I love lots of exercise, running , bike riding and swimming. I just love playing with my tennis ball I could play throw all day long.

I'm too big and clumsy to be around young children and need someone with strong leadership skills to be my master.

At the moment I am in Mayflower Animal Sanctuary (01302 711330). If you think I could join your family please pop and see me.
