Welcome to the

Experienced Gas Safe Plumbing & Heating Engineers

2017 edition

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. “ Melody Beattie Those of you who know me and my family personally will know that my daughter was at Manchester Arena on the night of the terrorist attack. We will forever be thankful that she and her friends came home safely to their families that night, when so many will never be able to do so. In the days that followed we received large numbers of calls and messages from so many friends and the love, care and support was very much appreciated. July brings the end of another school year and all of the activities associated with this period. I have many happy memories of sports days, end of year concerts and preparations for moving to the next stage of life. For another of my children, this year it is the end of school life and another set of A Level results is awaited! The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 12th July.

community Community Hi Everyone, Warm sunny days are just around the corner, and we are so looking forward to enjoying our walks with man’s best friend. We will be holding their annual Scrufts Dog Show on Sunday 2nd July. There will be Rosettes for 1st,2nd,3rd prize, plus raffle and stalls. Food and drinks will also be available. It takes place at the recreation ground at Tithes Lane in Tickhill. Entry is free. Hopefully the weather will be glorious for everyone and you will be able to bring a rug and a picnic hamper for a fantastic fun/family day out. We here at the Sanctuary love this event as it gives us the opportunity to meet all of our dogs that have gone to their forever homes. Please come along to support this event, we will look forward to seeing everyone. Marks & Spencer Wheatley Hall Road Doncaster have been at our Sanctuary for 3 days this week doing lots of projects to help us. They have worked so hard, gardening, painting and generally tidying up. They sent a team of 10 every day and they were amazing. I still can’t believe these people took time out of their busy store to help us, but help us they did, in the hands on best way possible. We are still working with M & S for on- going fund raising projects which we are really excited about. At last Roxy our long term beautiful Staffy went to her forever home at the weekend, we are so pleased for this lovely mature girl, we even have a video of her enjoying her new garden. May you enjoy your new home for years to come Roxy, you waited a long time for this, so it’s your time now. A lovely dog was found in the road with a nasty injury to her leg. She was taken to the vet by a passer-by who then asked us if we could take her, which we did. We thought her

Finding a forever home injury was going to be ok, however unfortunately she has had to have her leg amputated. She is the most loving creature and deserves a wonderful home. She is not ready to be viewed as yet as she is with a foster family until she heals a little. But look out for her on our web site in the next few weeks. (We have named her Grace) This brings me onto vets fees, last year our bill was close to £60,000 for the year. This is a lot of money to find when you are a charity and rely on donations to keep you afloat. If anyone would like to make any contributions/ donations to help with vets fees for Grace please either forward a cheque or ask about giving a donation by direct debit every month. As little as £3 per month would make such a difference. We are arranging a table top sale in Tickhill Scout Head Quarters on the 16th of Sept . If you would like to hire a table they will be £12 each. Please come along and bag a bargain. If you would like to book a table please call Janice 07590455340 If you require any further information about the work we do please call us 01302 711330 we will be happy to help Bye for now

Name: Poppy Female Sex: Date into care: Feb 17 Age: 6 years Good with dogs: Unsure Good with cats: Yes - KitKat Lived with children: Older Poppy came into care with her buddy Kitkat due to illness in the family. They are very bonded and aren’t usually far from each other. Either snuggled up together snoozing or grooming each other Therefore a home together is essential for this pair. They can be a little wary of strangers but if you have the patience and are calm you will be rewarded with lots of purrs and ‘kitty kisses’ They would probably be suited to a calmer household where they can settle in at their own pace. Could they come home with you?

Name: Blue Male Sex: Date into care: 23 May 17 Age: 1 Year Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: Unsure Lived with children: Older Blue is a lively dog whi is looking for an activ family, He loves attention and loves to sit on your knee for cuddles. He is still young and needs his basic training to be started to try and harness his enthusiasm. He walks well on the lead but sometimes needs encouraging along.

community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Take a seat This year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting. If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest. Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all.

My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. ,I ¿ QDQFHV DOORZ \RX FDQ EX\ EHDXWLIXO WHDN wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care. Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from longlasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, UHVLVWDQW HDV\ FDUH V\QWKHWLF ¿ EUHV ZKLFK absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards. They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are cleaned easily by vacuuming, with a broom, or by beating them. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it!

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JULY 2017 Harworth Allotments I called in on some of the allotment holders recently and was very impressed by what I saw; the plots were so tidy, so smart, the produce so cared-for, and it was obvious a lot of work had gone into each individual plot. To those men and women working on the allotments – you should be proud, folks, you’re doing a great job. $SDUW IURP WKH EHQHČ´ W RI JURZLQJ your own vegetables, there is another advantage to having an allotment: being part of a group with a common interest. Chatting, helping each other, and generally putting the world to rights – I reckon it’s as good as any golf club and much cheaper! Food Banks Here in Bassetlaw, food banks became fully operational in 2013. The demand for their services is measured in the number of food parcels given out, though a parcel might be for 1 person, or a couple, or a family. In 2013, the number of food parcels distributed was 539, this demand has risen every year and in 2016 the number was 1185. :H NQRZ WKH QDWLRQDO Č´ JXUH IRU WKH Č´ UVW TXDUWHU RI VKRZV D 17% increase, but for Bassetlaw WKH Č´ JXUH LV D LQFUHDVH Ζ GR try to help with supplies; I know that strict criteria are used, people cannot self-refer and most clients only get the one food parcel, so the system is not abused. The main centres are at Retford and Worksop but a satellite food bank also operates from H&B Town Hall – ask for details if you wish to donate. Councillor Corner Gillian Wratten is very much a local person – born, educated and later married in Harworth, she has spent her entire life and raised a family in this community. Gillian recalls the time when Harworth and Bircotes was a prosperous place, but then came the economic downturn – the closure of the shoe factory, then Glass Bulbs, and Č´ QDOO\ +DUZRUWK &ROOLHU\ Č‚ *LOOLDQ describes it like a cancer spreading DQG DÎ? HFWLQJ WKH ZKROH WRZQ She also believes local people are proud people, and she became a councillor in 2010 in the belief that the town could reclaim that pride. 28 HARWORTH TODAY

Gillian was involved in developing the Neighbourhood Plan, believes that developments will make this place great again, and encourages anyone who shares this aspiration to join the Council. As she says, “it can only get betterâ€?. Shed Burglaries Two months ago, I returned home at lunchtime; as I parked my car I heard an alarm ringing out and noticed that Trevor Jones had dashed from his allotment to check if my bungalow was being burgled. Later I discovered that someone had attempted to break into my shed in the rear garden. They had sawn through the hasp on the bolt, removed the padlock, but as soon as they opened the door the alarm was triggered. It is hard work and at times can be challenging; my golden rule when I was able to campaign was to respect the views RI RWKHUV DQG DQVZHU TXHVWLRQV honestly. It can also have some amusing moments. I remember once campaigning with a colleague in Retford who was talking to a gentleman at his front door. “Sorry, mate. I’m voting royalistâ€? was the response. I also recall being in one Bassetlaw ward known for its highly desirable, expensive housing; I was amazed to see the lady of one house standing at her front window making rude hand gestures as we passed – so much for being ‘posh’! On a more serious note, this year I was telephone campaigning within this community and despite my ‘cold calling’ not one person was rude to me, regardless of which party they supported.
