Welcome to the July 2015 edition

Well exams are over for my family and I am sure that students up and down the country will be celebrating. Just the results in August to look forward to now! About the time these magazines arrive on my driveway my daughter will have her much anticipated School Prom. A great deal of preparation seems to have gone into this one evening, I do hope it lives up to expectations!

Your Local Independent Estate Agents...

I am sure that all of the end of school year activities such as sports days, summer fairs, concerts and transition days will all now be well under way. It is my first year for many years that I haven’t had a child at primary school and I think that without all these activities that remind me that the school year is coming to a close, end of term is going to catch me a little by surprise.

Harworth & Bircotes TRA held their latest meeting on Tuesday 2 June in the Devonshire Road Community Centre. A representative from A1 Housing came along to explain the reason for the changes to the warden call service, and to explain why some have had to be done via the telephone system. There was also a visit from the Head of the Customer Services Team, who explained her role and the role of her team. They are the first point of contact on the gold number (0800 590542). She urged people to get involved in attending the Estate Inspections which take place, usually twice a year, and in our Town there are three separate areas. Anyone wishing to attend should ring the above number, and ask what date the next inspection will be and let them know if you wish to be involved. Residents know where the hotspots are better than the council and others officials who attend the inspection, so it can be very beneficial for locals to become involved. The group had had a very successful outing to the Beamish Open Air Museum, when the weather had been much kinder than on other occasions. District Councillor Dave Challinor said he was pleased that the three district councillors had all been re-elected, and thanked people for their support. He talked about a scheme, which people can get involved in to give us pride in our surroundings. It is the Bassetlaw Litter Defence Volunteers Group. Some members already litter pick in their immediate area. There are plans to increase the fixed penalty for littering from ÂŁ80 to ÂŁ1000. He thanked members of the TRA and BATRA who had awarded the Boxing Club a sum of money to improve the club. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 7 July, at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome, tea and coffee and biscuits are served, and there is usually a raffle. These meetings are usually very interesting with talks from representatives of organisations which the group wish to hear from.

Patient Participation Group nt and on facebook regarding the NHS Minor Ailme Recently there was some activity in the news of the nce existe the of are , we at the PPG, were unaw Services Scheme. Until we read the information . ation inform are sharing our scheme. However, now we are aware of it, we

Minor ailment services Some pharmacies run a minor ailment scheme, which means they can supply medicines for certain conditions on the NHS. • If your pharmacy runs a minor ailment scheme that includes eczema, for example, it means your pharmacist can supply medicines for this condition and you'll only pay the standard prescription charge. • Any decision on whether medication or medical supplies are needed lies with the Pharmacist who makes the assessment. • Patients must register for the scheme with the Pharmacy. However if you're exempt from paying prescription charges – because you're under 16 or over 60, for example, or you have a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) – you won't pay for the medicine.

Update from the Practice • A recent audit for the NHS across all surgeries revealed a large percentage of GP appointments are avoidable. Of 160 appointments audited from our practice in one day, 38% were deemed avoidable. This means they could have been treated by a Pharmacist, a Nurse, a Health Care Assistant or at home. • A doctor has been appointed to replace Dr Sheehan. He is Dr DeSilva and will start in August. Until then Locum doctors will continue to be used. 6

Other conditions which may be covered include: • Coughs and colds, including nasal congestion and sore throat • Minor cuts and bruises • Constipation and haemorrhoids (piles) • Hay fever and allergies • Aches and pains, such as headaches, earache and back pain • Indigestion, diarrhoea and threadworms • Period pain and thrush • Warts and verrucas, mouth ulcers and cold sores • Athlete's foot • Nappy rash and teething • Skin conditions, such as mild acne and mild eczema • Some pharmacies also provide truss fittings, stoma products and incontinence supplies.

y of your Just ask at anmac local phar ies!

This could mean getting the correct medication for some of the above conditions free for your children or you if you qualify and you won’t need a doctor’s appointment.

• Lastly and sadly for all patients and staff Dr Saunders has announced he will be leaving the Practice in November. He will be sadly missed. We will write more at a later date.

Thank you from Neil Paczkowski The response to the article in this magazine about my mental health disorder has been brilliant and the donations have flooded in. I look to reach around £3500 when it’s all counted up which is great. I did the marathon in 3hrs 23 mins which is a decent effort. Thank you to every one for your support.

Introducing... the tree bumblebee Bombus Hypnorum - this little chap with a white furry bottom is particularly active now, and a small number of them are probably doing figures of eight by your garage roof, or outside a nesting box on your apple trees.... I've had 3 calls about them this week and I am not even on the Councils’ list of bee-keepers to call! ...if you have them, don't worry. They are not interested in you, these are the drones on the lookout for a queen... they are relatively benign and if you try and move them you will kill them. Come the end of July the whole colony except the queens die off. The queens hibernate until March. Honey bees are the only bees to go through the winter as a colony. Have a look at British beekeepers website to help identify bees. http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/do_you_have_a_ swarm.php

f y

If you ring the council with a problem about bees they will give you the phone number of one of the members of Doncaster Beekeepers association. They get a lot of calls, and if it is a genuine swarm of honey bees will be happy to help as long as they aren’t somewhere inaccessible like a chimney or at the top of an enormous tree. The council (because of the cuts) have no one to deal with bees now. So please take some time and properly identify your bees before making that phone call. Bumble bees are a protected species. Enjoy them. T

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, Everyone has been wounded in the past. It is therefore no surprise to us that most of us would want to have a time of healing in our lives. Healing takes a lot of patience and a lot of time – days, weeks, months and sometimes years. Spiritual healing is similar to healing from a deep wound. It starts from the inside and ends on the outside. Thus, it may be difficult to see the steady healing process in our lives. We only need to believe that the mending process is taking place. Most of us forget to thank God when we are mended. Psalms 103: 1 - 5 below suggest that we praise God for healing us: “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (New International Version). How often do you say thanks for having your body and spirit mended? It’s time to start. However, as you wait for healing in your life, there is also the need to play your part. Joyce Rupp, in her book, “The cup of our life. A guide to spiritual growth’, suggests that in order to be mended sometimes, you need to: o Identify and work with your emotions o Have compassion with yourself and others o Let go of your resistances o Trust and yield to God o Receive support from others o Extend and receive forgiveness o Take good care of your body and spirit I wonder if you can take sometime and work through the list above. It will do your body and spirit some good and bring healing. Here is a suggested prayer you would want to say after you have worked through: ‘God of healing, help me to mend the broken places in my life. Direct my mind and heart to

sources of hope and healing. Let me not forget all that remains for me as I ponder what has gone from my life. Be my vision and my strength. Anoint me with the oil of your love and take my hand as I move forward into ever greater healing”. – Joyce Rupp Have a blessed month.

community Hi everyone, I am writing this page whilst on holiday in Greece. The village I am staying also has its cat and dog problems. I am also involved with the groups of volunteers here that encounter the very same problems and are no different from any other town and village throughout Europe . What is important is that that there are people trying to make a difference even in small communities. Now, getting back to our Sanctuary, we were all so excited when we received a call from the Paul O’Grady show. We were asked if we would like to take a cute puppy down to the live show to promote our Sanctuary. Paul found our puppy so adorable that he decided to do the first part of the show with the puppy sat on his desk. So Amie and Louise who had taken the puppy to the studio didn’t get a look in! This was such a privilege for us and we received the most amazing publicity. We have now been open as a Sanctuary for 12 years and how things have changed. Through hard work and devotion our Sanctuary has been transformed from old garages, a cold running tap and a portal loo into the prince of facilities, with hot and cold water brick kennels, with under floor heating and a reception that we are all so proud of thanks to many donations and bequests. These projects would not have been possible without hard working volunteers using their building and decorating skills to help us create a safe and secure environment for our residents.

Finding a forever home

anyone that would like to volunteer, even for a few hours a week. We are really desperate for volunteers to man the shop. This would be in the Worksop area so please if you can spare a few hours call us . We have a vacancy for an experienced kennel assistant, however you must be willing to work rota weekends. Please call 01302 711330 and leave a message or bring you CV to the Sanctuary We need volunteers to stand outside Pets At Home or join our street collection in Doncaster on the 11th July. Our dog show is on the Recreation field up Tithes Lane, Tickhill on the 12 th July and we also need more volunteers to help on the day.

Junior has come into our care because his previous owner has had to move into rented accommodation and Junior wasn’t allowed to go. Its was a sad day when they had to part. Junior has had quite a stressful time lately. Previously a housecat, things are a little strange here and it has taken him a while to adjust. He is starting to gain his confidence now so his true personality will come shining through. Still prone to hissing when he feels threatened, he needs his new owners to be patient and give him time to become accustomed to his new surroundings at his own pace. The wait is worth it.

Thank you to everyone that has left dog food and blankets in my garage I am surprised every day by people’s generosity. We are still desperately in need of donations. If you would like to set up a direct debit of just £2 a month this would make such a difference and help enormously.

Whilst the weather is getting warmer the dogs are enjoying their early morning walks with our dog walker volunteers who do a great job. We try to make sure our dogs have at least 2 walks a day to keep them happy.

If you are considering looking for a cat or dog please come to see us we will be happy to have a chat and discuss which dog or cat would fit your life style .

If you are interested in dog walking please give us a call, we would need you to come on a Tuesday afternoon so we can carry out a health and safety talk then you could come along and walk to help keep our dogs happy.

Bye for now

We haven’t as yet made a decision on a shop and would still like to hear from

Quad Bikes in the area We continue to receive an increase of incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. Throughout January to May 2015 the Neighbourhood policing team, have seized 5 off road bikes and 3 quad bikes that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area. Some of these bikes seized have been examined and confirmed stolen property where enquiries are ongoing. Some of these vehicles will be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal. Following a Police operation a quad bike and trailer were seized by officers in April both were reported to be stolen. Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check

that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We continue to offer free property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.

and the other male received 12 months. A male from the Harworth and Bircotes area is still remanded in custody until June 2015 to appear at Nottingham Crown Court for a trial in relation to witness intimidation and perverting the course of justice. A Male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has been sentenced to five years in prison for Burglary in neighbouring forces. 2 Males have been charged with Witness intimidation and Section 4 public order in relation to an incident in Harworth and Bircotes in March 2015. A Female also involved in the incident has been charged with criminal damage and section 4 public order. All 3 are due to appear in court in June 2015.

Speeding Vehicles At the recent Priority Setting meeting the issue of speeding vehicles has been raised as one of the three main priorities in the area. The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be continuing to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area. The Neighbourhood policing team are arranging some more active speed detection dates with school in June 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and May 2015 approximately 1600 vehicles have been monitored with around 10 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.65% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area.

Water without the guilt...

Plants for Dry Spaces Alliums - the huge ones look great Cistus - Rock Rose Euphorbia - my favourite, very architectural Helianthemum - Sun Rose Lavender - plant near patios for the fragrance Santolina Sedum - almost indestructible! Senecio - the sunshine plant Thyme

But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon.

However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system.

But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant.

Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives.

A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size.

Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently.

Who remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks.

You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres! With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free. 22

Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further. A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth!

Enjoy your garden. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JULY 2015 ALDERMAN FRANK HART I am pleased to report that Frank was made an Honorary Alderman by Bassetlaw District Council at their A.G.M. in May, in recognition of his 15 years as a District Councillor and as a past Chair of Bassetlaw Council. Locally, we also remember him as a Town Councillor who worked many years serving this community, and although he has now retired from front line politics, I know he and Eileen will retain a keen interest in local developments. (I also have to tell you that Eileen looked an absolute knockout on the night!) IN MEMORY OF HARWORTH COLLIERY MINERS Thanks to those who have contacted me about details relating to a past relative. To date, we have determined that in fact the oldest man who lost his life was 73 year old Matty Cape, and I also discovered a few spelling ‘interpretations’ of names along the years – this is not unusual when relying on old records. Can you help- we have identified a further two names, and any details anyone can supply about George Makepiece, who we think died in 1928, would be most helpful.

The stone will list just the names (arranged in alphabetical order) and date of death; the record of deaths kindly supplied by Glen Mather at Harworth Estates details not only names and date of death, but age, cause of death, the location of incident plus occupation, and it is the latter that I found fascinating: pony boy, stall man, filler, ripper, rope runner and even puller/pusher. Thank you, Paul West, for telling me a ‘corporal’ was the original term for the man in charge of the haulage team.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: LOOKING TO THE FUTURE You may have noticed in early June men with theodolites measuring Harworth Crossroads. I asked them why they were doing this work, they told me it was at the request of Notts. County Highways Dept. and also that they had just completed a survey of the Blyth Road/A614 junction near the A1M roundabout. This prompted me to ask Highways for more information, and as a result I have seen initial proposals from Notts. County/Highways Planning Development for Harworth Crossroads, which includes several much-needed controlled pedestrian crossings. I don’t think I can tell you anymore about this yet, mainly because past experience tells me the plan could change several times before we see the ultimate scheme in place. I am told the scheme depends on external funding – this means money not in Notts. County’s own allocated budget but from specific regional government grants - so don’t hold your breath. However, I will keep pestering the authorities for both more information and progress updates.

A1 HOUSING: NEW BUILD

PROBLEMS

A delegation of Housing Officers and Councillors from areas outside Bassetlaw visited Harworth in June to look at the new buildings replacing the Airey Houses on Smith Square. Their interest arose because hardly any Local Authorities are building new council houses, and they wanted to know more – Bassetlaw is one of the very few Districts building new homes. I can report the delegation were genuinely impressed with the quality, design and size of the new housing site, and are viewing what A1 has done in Harworth as a model they would like to adopt.

• Who is it who has been kicking the internal doors in the male public toilets so badly that we have had to pay to have one door repaired? • Someone has stolen a hanging basket on display in Old Harworth. This theft was obviously planned as the basket could not be simply unhooked if standing at ground level. It sometimes feels as if the majority of us are banging our heads against a brick wall, just because of the actions of the minority of toe rags.

HARWORTH COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP A new community group has been established, it is dedicated to involving members of the community and getting local support to make things happen. The group members are volunteers who all care about Harworth and Bircotes. More volunteers are needed- who do you know who is willing to join the group and help shape the future for this community? For more information ring 759037 or 743239.

The repairs to the door, the cost of the hanging basket- these all come out of your Council Tax; it is your money they are wasting- if you do see anything suspicious please report it to the Council. CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU CA.B. is now available every Thursday morning from 10am – noon in the Community Information Centre; you can call into the building and book an appointment any Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning. C.A.B. do great work, so if you have any issues or financial concerns, you can access free advice that you know will remain confidential.

community COMMUNITY BUS We are now receiving bookings for the Thursday free Community Bus Service, which starts on 18th July. Anyone interested should ring 07444 538430. TO MAKE YOU SMILE Most people know I live in a bungalow on Bawtry Road; many of you know the land previously belonged to my grandfather Tommy Bannister. It was built with the help of friends, local tradesmen and the excellent Maurice Chapman. When almost complete, I stood one evening looking at our future new home when I was approached by a young boy on a bicycle. “Hey, missus, are you rich?” he asked. Looking at the youngster, I replied “not anymore, son, not anymore!”
