Welcome to the
July 2019 edition
Today
“What is lovely never dies, but passes into another loveliness, star-dust or sea-foam, flower or winged air.” Thomas Bailey Aldrich July already and the summer months might finally be upon us. Another school year is coming to an end and another set up young people are heading towards leaving behind a nursery, school or college. Hopefully although sad about leaving they will be looking forward to the challenges ahead as they enter the next phase of their education or move into the workplace. Just like in June you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends through July. You will find details of many such events throughout this magazine. Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for James performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th July. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.
Best wishes,

The annual exhibition of work by this busy and successful art group which is set up to benefit local artists by meeting, working and exhibiting together through practical sessions, demonstrations, discussions and talks. The WSA provides opportunities for amateur and professionals to meet, create and exhibit together. Further information is available through their Facebook page @ worksopsocietyofartists Bassetlaw Museum, Retford until 10 August ‘FATHER AND SON’ BY KIP AND RICHARD COMBES. Kip Combes (1924-2013) was a prominent figure on the local art scene and a president of the Worksop Society of Artists, while his son Richard is a highly respected New York-based artist who has exhibited internationally and has work in major private collections worldwide. During the early stages of World War II, Kip Combes was evacuated to Retford with his family and, apart from a period of living in Manchester, he remained in the town for the rest of his life. Richard was brought up in Retford and worked as an architect in the UK before moving to New York City. There he earned Master’s degree in painting at the New York Academy of Art and his remarkable skills and mastery of techniques have earned him multiple awards and a full membership of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Although many of Richard’s works are realistic representations of people and objects, they are not just skilful depictions of subjects. His art transports viewers into the middle of an intriguing,

unfinished story and makes them wonder about how it continues. This exceptional artistry transforms everyday spaces and objects into extraordinary images that are both absorbing and haunting. www.bassetlaw.museum.gov.uk Yorkshire Sculpture Park DAMIAN HURST has arrived and his enormous eye-sores cannot be missed as you make your way hot foot from the main carpark to the new and wonderful Weston Gallery. The Weston is a small addition to YSP, and mainly an eatery, but the gallery itself is a lovely airy light space with a really interesting and beautiful exhibition by Punjabi artists THUKRAL & TAGRA whose work discusses the problems faced by subsistence farmers in the Punjab. It may not sound artistically interesting stuff, but the show is beautiful and intriguing and enjoyable and we had an engaging visit. When in doubt, ask the gallery staff. At YSP in particular they are always friendly and helpful. Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) is the American artist who took sculpture off the plinth and made it in steel and stainless steel. We are so used to seeing what he developed that it perhaps sounds rather obvious. His work isn’t always beautiful, its hard edged and tough, but will be worth seeing, and hopefully the galleries will be well filled and stunning. www.ysp.co.uk Cupola Gallery 13 July - 24 August MAKERS MARK a group exhibition focusing on artwork where the touch of the artists’ hand is visible www.cupolagallery.com Gardens everywhere: The NGS open garden scheme is now in full swing with gardens opening up and down the country and many in our locality throughout the summer. All proceeds go to charity. You will find the yellow NGS booklets in your local libraries or visit www.ngs.org.uk Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra event at Parklands Social Club: Friday 12 July 7 to 10pm KATE PETERS PLAYS ELLA. “Having performed all over the world and with many a household name, it is a true privilege to welcome Kate to the stage” performing with the Youth Jazz Orchestra. www.dyja.co.uk/events Djanogly Gallery Nottingham 13 July – 27 July UNIVERSITY SUMMER EXHIBITION this exhibition showcases the talents of students, staff and alumni of the university. www.lakesidearts.org.uk

TILL WE MEET AGAIN DEAR FRIENDS,
As the wisdom saying in Ecclesiastes states, “There is a time for everything…”. It continues as, “What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end”. I came to the Doncaster Circuit of the Methodist Church as a Probationer Minister almost 11 years ago. Before that, my family had lived in Bradford and had become accustomed to the cosmopolitan city in West Yorkshire. We were therefore a bit anxious in moving to Doncaster, a town which we had heard of as having many prisons and secured units. In the year we moved to Doncaster, I read from the newspapers about the council and a mayor that had made a bad name for Doncaster. However, we were taken aback when in our first week in Doncaster, some people stopped to say hello to us on the streets. Some even went further to have great conversations with us. These made us felt at home because it was almost like living in a Ghanaian community. As a Minister, I have had a fantastic time in Doncaster. I started looking after two churches and finished with five. However, I had great support from my Ministerial colleagues, members of the church and the communities in which I have ministered. I wondered initially whether being a black Minister would have a detrimental effect in my Ministry. I would say that at the start, there were issues of some people understanding my African accent and I understanding a broad Yorkshire accent from some communities. However, as time went on there was a mutual understanding from both sides. Culturally, I had to learn a lot though I had lived in a bigger city in Yorkshire before coming to Doncaster. I realised that living in a suburban commu-

T
nity called for a particular way of life. I also realised that just like Ghana, most of the communities in which I ministered were close-knit, so I had to be careful of my conduct and conversations. As a Minister, my vision in Doncaster was for people to know God better and engage with him in the common things they do every day. I remember that at the start of my Ministry in Doncaster, I was interviewed by a representative of a church magazine about my plans for the church in Doncaster. My response was that I did not come to make people Christians but to help them know who God is and understand their purpose in live because God has set eternity in every human heart. I wonder if the communities that I served can relate to this vision. I believe that God had used me to help some people to realise what great potential they have in knowing God and understanding the purposes of God in their lives. However, I may have to confess that some of my actions and words may have confused some people in understanding who God is. For those people, I wonder if you can forgive me. To conclude, my family and I leave Doncaster and Yorkshire with good memories of a county where most people are warm hearted and look out for each other. We move to Southwick in West Sussex hoping never to forget the great memories of Yorkshire puddings, fish and chips, great landscapes, affordable shops and people with great faith in God. By the way, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you to the leaving service at Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday 10th July at 7.30 p.m. This will help me to formally say goodbye to you. May almighty God bless you in all your endeavours and keep you safe till we meet again. Yours sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam (Methodist Minister for Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough & Tickhill) Tel: 0130857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk

In our last article we wrote that we were planning for more galas that were scheduled in our calendar of events. The galas come thick and fast, and we
no sooner complete entries for 1, then we are preparing for entries into the next. We would like to acknowledge the hard work put in by Tamsin Watkins and Janice Wilkie who keep us in check with gala entries and payments. Swimming galas, despite the stifling heat, are great events with a wonderful atmosphere both poolside and in the spectator area. Our swimmers continue to do themselves and the Club proud: congratulations to one of our Club swimmers and Bassetlaw A-Squad members, Dominic, who recently competed in the East Midlands Regional Championships with a fabulous performance in his events; many of our swimmers also enjoyed success at the 2-day Rotherham Metro gala in May with a 93% success rate in achieving Personal Bests; and we have recently taken our younger swimmers aged 9 and under to a friendly meet with Retford Swimming Club in June where they had a chance to practise their gala technique without the pressure of the “real deal”! As you can see from the photo, we had lots of smiling faces, and they all did really well. Finally (at least for the

time being) we have another 3 galas between now (at the time of writing) and the end of July. Busy, busy… #nonstopswimming Now for something slightly different… in the coming weeks, when the weather warms up (so I am being told), we will again be participating in “open water” swimming at Hatfield. This was a great event which the Club (both swimmers and parents) enjoyed last year and I am reliably told that the water is “quite inviting”. This has not convinced me sufficiently to join in, so I will watch enthusiastically from the lake-side as everyone else dons their wetsuits and braves the pondweed. I would like to end this newsletter by conveying our thanks to the Tickhill & District Lions association - we are delighted that we have just received some funding from the group which will enable us to further develop as a Club. This is very much appreciated and a BIG Thank You to them. If you are interested in competitive swimming for your child (Stage 7 upwards) so that they can improve their techniques, progress in swimming and compete at Club and County events, you can contact myself, Jo Chestnutt, in the first instance, at bircotesswimclub@gmail.com T

JAMES ‘Live After The Races’ Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 17th August Following the release of their brand new album ‘ Living In Extraordinary Times’ last year, James are back with new songs. The Mancunians returned in 2018 with the ‘Better Than That’ EP and they followed with their 15th studio album, aptly titled ‘Living In Extraordinary Times’. Taken together as shot and chaser they prove James to be as vital, visceral and urgent as ever. James are one of British indie rock’s most celebrated and enduring bands. Formed in 1982 in Whalley Range, Manchester, their
debut ‘Jimone’ EP was released in November the following year on Factory Records and made Morrissey and Johnny Marr into early fans. The band went on to produce a string of huge hits during the next three decades, including ‘Come Home’, ‘Sit Down’, ‘She’s a Star’ and ‘Laid’. New President
Outgoing President, Ron Lindsay, was delighted to welcome George Collier as the new president. George has chaired our Welfare Committee for the last year as well as being joint Press Officer, with Pete Booth. He will now combine the press role with the presidency of the club. A Tickhill resident since 1989, George is a former secretary of Tickhill Cricket Club and a regular at Bircotes gym. George thanked Ron for his hard work and dedication during his two years tenure. Ron has expanded the membership, been actively involved in virtually every fundraising event and supported dozens of worthy people and community groups during his time in office. Most notably Ron guided the club through the arduous task of gaining full charitable status.
Charter Dinner
In a typical small charity 30p to 40p of every pound donated goes to cover administration costs. In April we hosted our 41st annual Charter Dinner, held at the Styrrup Hall Golf and Country Club to raise money specifically for our administration account so that every penny you donate throughout the year goes to good causes.
LCIF Lions Clubs International Foundation We continue to donate each year to Lions Club International Foundation to support eight critical needs around the world:- vision, youth, disaster relief, humanitarian causes, diabetes, childhood cancer, hunger and the environment. LCIF directs money to local Lions clubs in areas affected, for example, by a natural disaster so that local Lions can control the money. Email: Phone: Website: Facebook:

THE PARISH OF HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES, STYRRUP AND HESLEY (All Saints’ Church, Harworth) T Hi! I am Rev’d Becky Hancock, wife of John, mum to Ellie and James and dog-walker of Desmond and Nigel!
I am a second-year curate serving in Bawtry and surrounding area. For those of you unfamiliar with Church lingo that basically means I am in the final stages of my training before becoming a vicar in my own parish. As I write this, I am on placement with Revd Nicky Skipworth at All Saint’s Church in Harworth for the month of June. I was recently asked by an inquisitive 9-year-old, “Becky, why did you want to be a vicar?” and I answered honestly with “well actually, I didn’t want to be a vicar, it was never part of my plan!”. You see, my life was very different prior to ordination in 2017. I had worked for a global banking organisation for 22 years in various roles in IT Management and prior to leaving to begin
WATERSLACK ROAD, DN11 8DW
theological training in 2014, I was an IT Programme Manager responsible for implementing projects in France and the UK. I loved my job, so, why on earth leave and train to be a vicar? After the birth of my first child, almost 13 years before leaving the bank, I went along to my local parish church to explore the possibility of God. As I explored faith, I had a gradual realisation that God had a plan for my life. It took me a few more years to realise that his plan for me was ‘vicar-shaped’!! As I obediently (and at times reluctantly) embraced his plan, some words that Jesus spoke just over 2000 years ago became a reality for me. John’s gospel records Jesus telling his disciples “I come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10) and I can honestly say that this has been my experience. Although I was happy with my life, I realise now that there was a Jesus shaped hole giving me a sense that something was missing in my life. I am thankful for
the courage that I had to walk through the doors of my parish church all those years ago. If you haven’t yet explored the possibility of God, or if you feel that there might be a Jesus shaped hole in your life and you want to know more, why not pop along to All Saint’s Church to discover what Jesus’ offer of life in all its fullness might mean for you? Recent experience tells me that a warm welcome awaits you when you walk through those church doors.
Every blessing, Becky
We gather for worship at 10am on Thursdays and Sundays For up to date event information and advice on how to make a baptism or wedding booking, find us on Facebook at ‘All Saints Church, Harworth and Bircotes’, or call Nicky the Vicar on 07734 233742 To enquire about hiring our Church Hall on Main Street, please ‘phone the Caretaker, Steve Ellis, on 01302 745439.

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The monthly meeting of the group took place on Tuesday 4 June, and it was well attended. The Chair said that recent raffles have taken place, with the proceeds going towards purchasing improved gifts for the Santa’s Grotto at the Christmas Lights event. A recent visit to Wentworth Garden Centre had been enjoyed by the group, when the weather had been very kind to us. A further outing to Liverpool takes place on Wednesday 19 June. The coach to Scarborough in August is full, as it is always a popular outing.

Though those that did attend seemed to be enjoying it. People complain that nothing is ever done, but when Town Council spend money putting on events, not enough people turn out to support them. There was a better attendance at the Fashion Show in the Town Hall. Some great bargains were available.
A series of events planned for the forthcoming year was given – on 2 August there will be a roller rink on the Events Area, followed by Harworth Beach, 12 – 16 August. TO CONTACT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE DIAL 101 for Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 For a more detailed list of crimes and incidents, members of public can look on www. police.uk website which will enable members of public to filter down to street/area level you want to look at for detailed list of incidents/crimes in that particular street or area. The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. POLICE WARN PUBLIC OVER RECENT ONLINE SCAMS :FAKE TV LICENSING EMAILS An ongoing TV Licensing phishing campaign, first identified by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) in September 2018, continues to be reported to Action Fraud in high numbers. Fraudsters are sending the public fake TV Licensing emails that are designed to steal their personal and financial information. Since April 2018, Action Fraud has received over 900 crime reports with victim losses totalling more than £830,000. HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF: • Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details. • Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic, even if someone knows your basic details (such as your name or address). Remember, criminals can spoof phone numbers and email addresses to appear as companies you know and trust, such as TV Licensing. • Your bank will never call and ask you for your PIN, full banking password, or ask you to transfer money out of your account. WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE FALLEN VICTIM: • Let your bank know as soon as possible and monitor your bank statements regularly for any unusual activity. • If you suspect your identity may have been stolen you can check your credit file quickly and easily online. Use a reputable service provider
and follow up on any unexpected or suspicious results. • If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible on 0300 123 2040 or via Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk NEWS FROM RECENT ARRESTS/ PROSECUTIONS/COURT RESULTS OVER PAST 3 MONTHS. Male sentenced to 9 Years 8 Months for Burglary and Robbery A Male from Harworth & Bircotes recently appeared in Nottingham Crown court on 8th May 2019 in relation to offences where he repeatedly targeted a 71-year-old victim over a four month period, committing a series of offences including robbery, burglary and harassment. The Male pleaded guilty to a total of Fourteen offences of Robbery in July 2018, Burglary and Theft in August 2018, Two counts of Theft in July and August 2018 , Possession of a sharp pointed blade/article in a public place in July 2018 and Nine counts of Breach of a restraining order on conviction in April to August 2018. The male was sentenced for all Fourteen offences at the hearing where he received a Total sentence of 9 years and 8 months imprisonment. Speaking after his sentencing the Officer who dealt with the case PS Kate Long said: “The male put the victim through a horrific ordeal having taken advantage of his kindness and vulnerabilities. He had already been convicted for similar offences against the same victim and had an indefinite restraining order upon his release from prison In March 2018. This did not deter him and within two weeks of being released from prison he started to target his victim again. He showed absolutely no remorse throughout our investigation. I’m very pleased we’ve been able to take this very dangerous man off the streets and I hope his lengthy prison sentence brings some comfort to the victim who has shown immense bravery throughout.” JUVENILE CHARGED WITH THEFT A Juvenile from Bircotes appeared at Mansfield Magistrates on the 7th May 2019 for theft of a motorbike in 2018, for theft of a motorbike which was subsequently found and recovered that took place in Bircotes in June 2018. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JULY 2019 KEEPING YOU AWARE OF DEVELOPMENTS IN OUR TOWN IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE; I WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED VIA THIS MAGAZINE, AND YOU CAN ACCESS THE COUNCIL WEBSITE AND THE COUNCIL FACEBOOK PAGE. ANY QUERIES: CONTACT ME OR OTHER COUNCILLORS, WE WILL, AS ALWAYS, TRY TO HELP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY 16th May: Visit by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire Sir John Peace visited Bassetlaw, looking at developments across the District. His final official visit was to the industrial sites in Harworth, where he noticed there has been considerable growth since his last visit. Then he and his party called at the Town Hall for lunch, and I was invited to join them. He asked me to tell him about the vision for Harworth and Bircotes, and I was happy to paint the bigger picture for him, covering housing, industry and employment, and the potential for retail developments – and I included the bigger, aspirational projects the Town Council want to see happen. I finished by pointing out that infrastructure improvements were a high priority. He also asked about the local provision of public services and how we could meet some of the gaps…I couldn’t resist, I gave him a frank but honest summary of what people tell me this community needs. Well, he did ask! Update Harworth South Public Consultation, 6th June, at the Town Hall. I popped in to look at the revised proposal for this future development on Blyth Road. The aim is to generate around 3,500 jobs, across all sectors and types - such as managerial, administrative, technical support, driving, payroll, warehouse staff,
34
manufacturing skills, plus a range of supporting roles. The intention is for flexible contracts, with both full time and part time jobs…this would be a significant boost for local employment and the local economy - here’s hoping!
piping and other materials, plus deliberate vandalism, the internal structure of the building is now being affected. Please, warn your youngsters – IT IS NOT SAFE! EVENTS Damage to New Equipment, Snipe Park Play Area. Someone chose to damage the Fono D.J. Kiosk, which has proved to be very popular with youngsters. At times I think we all despair - it makes me wonder - why would anyone do this? However, the damage was rectified, and Council went ahead with the planned Fun Day on 31st May. Those who attended the event enjoyed the activities on offer, and the performances from Live and Local The Town Council was involved in a Community Litter Pick on 28th May, involving councillors and members of the public working their way along the shop fronts on Scrooby Road. Those helping out were motivated by the knowledge that this activity is linked to funds for new bins - talking of which, New Bins and Signage – the plans have been submitted to Notts. County Highways to approve the proposed placements of this new street furniture. The Fashion Show, 1st June, was a great success, very well attended and much enjoyed. The good news is that it raised £259, to be used towards future community events planned for the summer in the Town Centre. (Keep an eye out for event information on the Town Council’s website and on Facebook, plus this magazine and local notice boards)
Interacting with Notts. County Council. I met with officers from Notts. County Council on 31st May to discuss Harworth and Bircotes, the evident growth of the Town, and the infrastructure needs of our community, plus the plans the Town Council has for the future. They were very interested in the possibility of future accommodation for over 55’s and people with disabilities. I did ask “where is Harworth and Bircotes in your Capital Programme?” – I was specifically referring to Highways and our roads and road safety – but got no answer. Everyone at that meeting knew that the bigger projects need commitment and Capital funds from a higher level, such as the Local Enterprise Partnerships; what we need is support from County to access that funding, which is why I keep trying to get the message across. WARNING – Keep Your Youngsters Out of Empty Building. I know teenagers sometimes forget about the law and trespass; even worse is that they don’t recognise danger. In June there were a number of incidents involving the Police because of teenagers trying to access the empty North Notts. Border School, and this includes invading the gardens of nearby properties late at night. Apart Bassetlaw Museum is asking local from causing ongoing nuisance to those who live close to the school, these youngsters are putting n Notts County Council 08449 808080 themselves at risk; due to n Bassetlaw District Council 01909 533533 theft of roof n A1 Housing 0800 590542 slates, copper

And a special Thank You to everyone who has used the Town Hall and/or car park whilst building work has been carried out; you have put up with banging, drilling and reduced parking spaces, everyone has been tolerant and understanding, and no-one has complained… you’ve been amazing. Planning Applications 19/00577/FUL: Application to build 2 pairs semi-detached bungalows and construct new access. To Make You Smile: Local Elections – What Happens After the Last Vote? I find the process of elections an experience with a sense of drama and theatre about it. After a final hectic day of campaigning, candidates wearing their colourful Party rosettes gather together at Worksop from 10pm, waiting for their ballot boxes to arrive from the polling stations so that the verification of ballot papers can start – this usually means getting home in the early hours, returning later that morning for the count to start at 10am. When counting for their own ward begins, candidates collect near the appropriate table and watch, trying to gauge the final outcome…you may see smiling faces, or sometimes a stiff upper lip is required; if it’s a close-run thing you can sense the tension. Body language during the count is interesting to watch; normally everyone is very polite and stand with their own colleagues, and I notice some opposing candidates avoid eye contact with each other, almost as if they’re invisible. During the day, as the results are announced for a particular ward there are loud cheers and clapping, followed by a short speech by the successful candidate – all this whilst the counting for other wards continues. This process is repeated throughout the day until every ward has been counted; you can expect to return home at some time in the afternoon, perhaps feeling disappointed, or elated, and in my case, totally whacked!
