Welcome to
the JUNE 2014 edition
"I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June." - L. M. Montgomery
June magazine already – Where is this year disappearing to? In my last introduction I mentioned hoping to read a few books while enjoying some Easter sunshine. I did indeed manage to polish off 7 books, while enjoying a family break in Lanzarote. Only 3 from my ‘to read’ list – the others just ones that other people had left behind on the book swap shelf that I liked the look of! June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family fun days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only are they fun events, but also valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. The July issues will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th June. Please keep a close eye on closing dates if you would like to include things over the coming months, they can sometimes fall earlier than people expect and we are often working to very tight timescales to meet print deadlines. I hate it when I have to tell people they are too late to promote their events!
Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine!

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Time is flying past with another busy year. The latest Information Session was on the topic of Health Awareness and the organisation of this was very ably initiated by Kath Ripley and held in The Parish Room in Tickhill. It is our intention to run this event for the Patients in Harworth and Wadworth in the near future. So please watch this space if you are interested in attending.
underway and will be ongoing for up to 12 months. We will feedback the outcomes as they become available and in the meantime we ask for your understanding and patience. The survey asked for suggestions for any future events and received the following suggestions:Diabetes awareness, Dietary advice, Blood pressure monitoring, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Thank you to all those who passed on suggestions and completed questionnaires. Lastly some disturbing figures:
The event was extremely informative and interesting and helped us realise the importance of the organisations out there aiming to help us stay informed about our health and wellbeing as well as being active and included in our local community.
In March 27.5 hours were wasted at The Tickhill Surgery and 33 hours were wasted at The Colliery Surgery by patients not attending appointments.
Staff from Doncaster NHS, Doncaster Health Well Being Officers, Public Health, The Carers Service, Dieticians, Diabetic Liaison, the Test your Health Nurse, plus representatives from Pilates and The Tickhill & District Walking Group all attended.
We can be contacted by email at:-tickhillandcollieryppg@ yahoo.com or via either surgery.
A big thank you goes to all those people who turned up to man stalls, pass on information, advice and to carry out health checks.
Please notify the surgery if you cannot attend. Other patients need appointments and one day it might be you.
Contact us forms are available online through the surgery website and comments forms are available in both surgeries Sarah Salthouse and Jan Hart T
• Early diagnosis is important. • A healthy diet, stimulation and exercise help everyone to stay healthy. A good number of patients joined us in the Parish Room and The Test Your Health Nurse proved especially popular with queues forming for the free health checks on offer for those aged 40 to 75 and not already under medical care and attendant regular checks. Throughout the morning PPG members were in and around Tickhill inviting people to the event, asking for questionnaires to be completed and recording questions and comments. All these questions and comments will be passed to the new Practice Manager for discussion and feedback. The largest sector of comments were about the difficulty of getting an appointment. We can report that the new Practice Manager Mr Russell Gardner has set his first priority as a full review of the appointment system and the appointment booking system. This review is already 4

Harworth Colliery Football Club Well another Season has come and gone and what a busy one it has been for all of our clubs but I have to start with the news that finally after years of trying we have League Winners in our midst as the M.U.S.C our Sunday side finished Invincible and claimed their first ever title after 30+ years of trying. Massive well done to Bren who has managed the team for 10 years now and bows out on a high as he passes the reigns over to Greg Fox. It’s been some acheivement to put that amount of time in as well as covering the 1st team Managers job, so hats off to him and everyone associated, Steve Satch Hawkins, Mick Pash and Tez Griffin well done to all. The 1st team have also finished in their highest league position for 15 years in finishing 4th in the Central Midlands League, this could and should have been better, but with Injuries and availability etc etc we didn’t finish strongly enough to finish higher as we had been in the top three until the last month. We look forward though and hope next year will be ours so ensure you keep a look out for the Pre-season freindlies and support the lads. Big thank you the the Reserves and Thirds staff in Terry Griffin and Lee Anderson who have completed all their fixtures and reserves doing well also finishing 4th, the 3rds not so well but have been competitive in every game and brought some good young lads through so onto the future.
Coaching Courses etc, we really need YOU! Everyone associated at the club now is doing above and beyond, so we need fresh people, if you have a child playing at Bawtry or Tickhill, we really want them playing here! If you have something to give and just need the support then get in touch. If we don’t invest in the youth we will lose out in the Seniors so please get in touch. Well done to Dave Guy, Graham Ellis and Gavin Simmonite for managing their respective Junior Sides, its hard work but rewards are there for all to see, so from all at the Club thank you. As ever we cannot do without the Volunteers who put all thir time in free of charge but also the Sponsors of the Club as with no fixed revenue stream everything we do is through fundraising and looking for sponsors, so big thanks to Lifting Support Services Mark and Steve, Neil at Clay Lane, Sassys Hair and Beauty, GJ Photography, Pentagon Toyota and Sea Queen, all have put money into the club so many thanks for this season and hopefully you will support us in the coming years. All the upto date news and our presentation night winners can be found on the clubs website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Let’s look forward to next season and remember if you think you can help at any level we are always on the look out for volunteers and potential sponsorship oppurtunities, enjoy the World Cup Summer and hope to see you all at the Colliery 2014-2015 Jonathan Wilson Chairman: jonycw@hotmail.co.uk
Speaking of the future we really want to increase our Junior teams as the Under 16’s have now come to their end we only have two Junior sides in the 13’s and 14’s. The club will support anyone who may want to start a team up, both financially and getting people on 10

Finding a forever home
We are taking care of about 13 puppies at the moment various breeds and sizes and as all puppies are beautiful. I have fallen in love with a little one called Cher who was borne at the sanctuary along with her brother Sonny. They are both adorable and if my lifestyle was different I would be taking her home to join my 2 grown up girls and 3 cats. However I know there will be someone out there with more time on their hands to dedicate to all of our puppies including Cher. So if you have the time and energy to cope with a puppy please come and see us. Likewise we have some lovely dogs and cats waiting for their chance to shine with owners that can give these animals a second chance. Including Susie who is a little Jack Russell with 3 legs. She is very loving and is just getting used to her disability .
June and our Black tie Ball at Mount Pleasant on 20 June. Also don’t forget the annual Scrufts dog show on the 6th July at Tithes Lane in Tickhill If you would like more information about any fund raising events please call us.

Work out at Work
Workout at Work Day (#workoutatwork) is on Friday 6th June. This annual awareness day promoted by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) enables Physiotherapists to highlight the benefits of healthier work habits and increase levels of physical activity. Poor work habits include sitting for long periods, repetitive tasks, missing breaks and prolonged periods on electronic devices. This can increase the risk of developing aches and pains (musculoskeletal disorders) as well as contributing to stress, depression and anxiety. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimate the majority of days off sick are as a result of these sorts of problems and cost employers 10.4 million working days in 2012. As experts in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, Physiotherapists can facilitate patients’ recovery as well as help prevent injury and ill health in the first place. Active staff could mean reduced sickness rates, fewer compensation claims and reduced expenditure on temporary staff. Other likely benefits include increased employee satisfaction, better productivity and improved retention. The Work Foundation reports that for every £1 invested in wellbeing initiatives, businesses get a return of £3. Working out at work can mean active travel to and from work, desk based exercises or may involve a workplace walking club or lunchtime activity. Work station assessments and ensuring breaks are taken can prevent problems building up. Access to health information can make a difference and the CSP’s advice leaflets can be downloaded for free ( www.csp.org.uk) For information on how Blizard Physiotherapy are supporting Work Out @ Work Day visit www.blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk 14

Burglaries in the Area There has been a slight increase in Dwelling Burglaries although a reduction of Burglary others from last month, and we advise people to check they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours or family to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. As the weather improves also ensure that you check that all windows are shut prior leaving your property. As the weather has improved over recent weeks, it’s the time of year when we start to carry out work again in our gardens. We strongly advise that people ensure that all lawnmowers and other gardens all stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Also ensuring that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We also offer Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thefts. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSOs to call round to mark you property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below. T
Theft from Vehicles Although there is a slight reduction of vehicle crime from the previous month we are continuing to have incidents of thefts from vehicle in the Harworth and Bircotes area where most of the 18

vehicles have been left insecure, Again we strongly urge people to ensure that they lock their vehicles and do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be for Sat Navs, small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is that Insurance companies tend not to pay out if you leave your vehicle insecure and it gets broken into or stolen, so please double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked. There have also been a number of thefts of catalytic convertors from vehicles in the area these have been from residential addresses. We would ask that you bear this in mind when parking your vehicle in order to try and make it as difficult as possible for someone to be able to remove the catalytic convertor from it. Officers have been conducting plain clothes operations in the area and have checked vehicles security, If a vehicle has been found to be unlocked we have woken the owners up to make them aware of the vehicles security. T

Dealing with doorstep callers With the arrival of spring there is likely to be an increase in doorstep callers offering to carry out gardening work such as tree cutting, selling of compost also roof and driveway cleaning and sealing. Whilst these callers may well be genuine callers, we’d like to remind residents to carefully consider accepting work from cold callers who knock on your door. If there are problems with the goods they sell or the work they do you may struggle to contact them again, you could end up paying more than you thought you had agreed to, and are likely to have little recourse. You should always ask to see some identification from callers at your door. Genuine callers will normally make an appointment first and carry
identification from their company with their photograph on. Most organisations have a telephone number that you can call to verify the representative’s identity. We would usually advise not to use the number stated on their card as it could be false, and suggest looking up the company in the telephone book or on the internet. To find details of trusted traders in your area you can use the ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme. Buy With Confidence is run by Trading Standards - Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council - with support from Age Concern and Consumer Direct. For further details visit www.buywithconfidence.gov. uk . If you don’t have internet access you can call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 and they can help
you find the traders that you need. The scheme cannot guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong, but members of the scheme must deal with complaints fairly, and Trading Standards will help both sides to reach a fair solution. For further advice on dealing with unexpected callers please see our dealing with unexpected callers guide. If you are concerned about cold callers in your area you can call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or in an emergency 999. Please pass this information to family members, friends, neighbours and anyone you think maybe vulnerable.

Garden View
How low can you grow? Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed 60’s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the potbought specimen under the shade of a tree). Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the 20
pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads. Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal when displayed at waist height, you realise how wonderful these tiny creations are. Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stonewall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a

tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too.
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JUNE 2014 Looking To The Future - Visit By The Lord Lieutenant I met with Sir John Peace at the Town Hall recently, who wanted to learn more about Harworth and Bircotes. I was expecting some retired gentleman with impeccable English; instead I found myself conversing with an astute businessman who asked some very probing questions. He was impressed by the Town Hall, bowled over by the Sure Start facility (did you know it is the third most successful in the whole of Nottinghamshire?), and applauded the use of the Community Information Centre as a hub for services to benefit the people.
details of our community, and requested we keep him updated on what is happening in our Town. Q. Why invite the Lord Lieutenant to our Town? A. To help make the business world aware of the potential Harworth and Bircotes can offer…. If we can get some investment and jobs, this will boost the local economy. Ambitious? – Yes, but that doesn’t stop me trying.
Turning An Eyesore Into A Community Asset
I am aware B.D.C. intends putting a M.U.G.A (multi-use games area) on the field, and Council would therefore like to see a facility that supports more sporting activity, but even better is the option of having a building that could also be used by other community groups not associated with sport. So, we would not only have a multi-use games area, but a multi-use building as well. There is also the issue of dog walking on that field; some people pick up the dog mess, but others continue to be irresponsible and leave it. I am concerned about dog fouling on a field where there is a children’s play area; one suggestion from Councillor Anita Smith is that we create a dedicated dog walking area well away from sporting/play facilities – what do you think about this?
Last month saw me on the Tommy Simpson Field, along with architects and planners. We were Looking to the future, I outlined looking at the future use of the the plans for growth and hence the field and the potential for better Q. What do you think a new importance of the ongoing work facilities, and in particular that modern building could be on the Neighbourhood Plan. I told building surrounded by fencing used for? What do you think him about issues both current and that houses some changing rooms, this community needs, now those that will come with growth – and which is no longer used. H&B and in the future? Any ideas or traffic, public transport, education Town Council is in discussion with suggestions – please let me know; needs- and how Council was Bassetlaw District Council about I also am keen to hear the views trying to address them, and also a possible transfer of ownership of people living nearby and what about the frustrations in getting of that building; this would be you think about any changes County/other organisations on a first step towards creating a and improvements that you board with these, though we are true asset for the community. would like to see. If ownership now making some progress. is transferred to H&B, then we BUT would be applying to a number What else did he want to know about? – You! He asked There is no point in Council taking of funding pots in order to make the necessary improvements. about the population, the on the responsibility for this different age groups, the level building/improving/extending it if of unemployment, skills and the community doesn’t then use it. academic achievements, possible apprenticeship schemes, and why very few people move out of the area…..he believed this is because of strong family and community ties, and he also felt ours was a Notts County Council 08449 808080 community with a future. Land Behind Galway Road This land is privately owned, but that doesn’t seem to stop someone cutting down the trees growing there. I understand a request was placed on Facebook, asking anyone with a chainsaw to come and help cut down trees because a skateboard park was to be built there – totally untrue! I hear the real reason for all this destruction is more to do with using quad bikes, though this may not be the case. However, I have had a number of concerned residents contact me about this, and so I have knocked on a few doors along Galway Road and Galway Drive…I have also had a word with the Police, and informed the landowner about what is happening on his property.

Sports staff and hopefully some funds may be available, I will be donating £200 from my District Community Allowance, but any other donations would be gratefully received. Sadly, it has fallen into disrepair and is in need of lots of attention to bring it back up to the previous standard. Now, Harworth Hurricanes B.M.X. Last month saw the Police operating with speed guns; I noticed this on Bawtry Road. Any driver hates being caught speeding, but common sense tells us that some drivers have no regard for the speed limits in place. One of the worst places is Styrrup Road, and some drivers using Common Lane must think they are at Silverstone; much as I dislike ‘speed bumps’ I think Common Lane is one place where they are definitely needed. The second week in May saw the appearance of a traffic warden working along the shop fronts; suddenly, no vehicles were parked on pavements and the free Council car park was busier than normal…. I hope we see more of traffic wardens and less abuse of pedestrian areas.

To Make You Smile On the same theme, my Mum was out shopping recently when a van swept across the pavement and stopped next to a shop door; a young man got out of the vehicle and walked towards the shop. Observing this, Mum said to him “what’s the matter – can’t you get it through the door?” She then proceeded to tell him that the pavement was for pedestrians, not vehicles. Did he reply? No, he played safe, just looked at her and disappeared into the shop, but not before he got her glare of disgust. Oh, that a few more people would take the same approach as Mum.
