Welcome to the March 2015 edition
This month Today Publications celebrates its 10th birthday! It is 10 years since the first issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. I thank everyone who has supported any of the 5 publications that we now have during those 10 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they find them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! I hope that you will continue to enjoy YOUR community magazine for many years to come. I know that many of you always read this introduction and following my comments last month you may be wanting to know how my quest for a new kitchen during 2015 is coming along. Well I am pleased to report that some decisions have now been made, and by the time the next magazine arrives it is possible that some work may have commenced! More details in future issues!

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The Group welcomed a new member who had recently moved into the town. We hope she enjoys our group meetings and will continue to attend. Further news on planned trips, including York and the Dungeons, and a Christmas market trip to Bakewell and Chatsworth House, were all discussed, as well as the trip to Retford’s pantomime on 4 January 2015. After the general election it is hoped to be able to arrange a trip to the Houses of Parliament. There is also the possibility of a visit to Beamish Open Air Museum. PC Jim Martin gave his report, which is reproduced elsewhere in this magazine. He also told us they had been working outside the schools, in a bid to curb speeding, but he said that the use of mobile phones whilst driving, and driving without a seat belt continue to be more of a problem even than speeding. He fully endorsed the use of the Emergency Contact Disc, where next of kin, and medical information can be stored, and kept on display in the now defunct tax disc holder. This information could

One member told of finding a carrier bag full of human excrement and toilet paper on a field adjacent to Cumberland Close. It is hard to imagine what kind of person would do this. Comments were also made regarding the amount of litter blowing around in the recent windy weather. Tenants were reminded about the “Meet and Greet” event at Retford Town Hall (an A1 Housing Event), and were told that transport can be provided if necessary, by contacting Customer Services at A1 Housing. We still hold a craft afternoon every Tuesday from 2 pm to 4 pm at Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome, and refreshments are available. Methodist Minister Dear Friends,
By the time you will be reading this letter, we will be in lent already. Lent is when people decide to do away with some pleasures as a way of fasting. It is to prepare for the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland produces a bimonthly worship material with the title ‘Roots’. In April 2014, it published and distributed a free copy of ‘Roots’ with the title ‘A Generous Life’. I wonder if I can use a bible passage from Isaiah in that issue to remind you of some of the reasons why we fast in Lent. It comes in the form of a conversation between two people labelled as numbers 1 and 2. Below is the conversation: 1. Why do we fast, but God does not see? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to share your bread with the hungry? 1. Of course, I know what it is to feel hunger: when it happens I go into the nearest restaurant! 2. You serve your own interests on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. 1. I have the best interests of my work force at heart: I pay them the full amount of the minimum wage, so that my business can remain profitable and I can continue to employ them! 2. You fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting, as you do today, will not make your voice heard on high. 1. I’m always happy to discuss difficult issues with others, and if they find it hard to share my point of view, I shout louder! 1. Why do we humble ourselves, but God does not notice? Humility? You won’t find anyone more humble than me! 2. Is this the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? 1. I’ve always said that there should be equal rights: if some people choose to live in poverty, that’s up to them! 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 1. It’s true that I do have a couple of rooms in my house that I never use, but I need somewhere to keep all my possessions, don’t I? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to bring the homeless poor into your house? 1. When I see children looking so dirty, with the ragged clothes hanging off them, it really makes me appreciate the good quality clothes I’m able to buy. 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: when you see the poor naked, to cover them? 1. Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? 2. Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am! Have a blessed period of Lent. Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T 10

We offer a full welfare benefits service, benefits checks, form filling, support at assessments and tribunals. We can also offer a Supported Appointments Scheme for individuals who due to unforeseen circumstances do not have family living close by. We would arrange to pick them up at their home, take them to the appointments, stay with them, and take them back home for a fee of £20, inclusive of transport. We can help with any medical appointment or even routine social appointments such as hairdressers. When we take an individual to a Hospital Appointment we would be going into the appointment, to take notes and explain what was said in the appointment to relatives. garden view
The greenhouse guide “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.” A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary. 18

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a predesignated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials. By Rachel Leverton

Saturday 7th March, Tickhill Scout & Guide HQ Open 10.30am till 2pm
(Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.)
Dr Tim Sheehan The deadline for the inclusion in the February edition had passed long before we received information about the untimely death of Dr Sheehan. However we felt we wanted to include our respects in the first available edition and it is with sadness that we report his death on Friday January 23th 2015 at his home and say thank you for the 10 years of service he gave to the patients of this practice. We have heard many kind anecdotes and comments almost all emphasising his willingness to be available to his patients. As the quotation says ‘No man is an island’ and his passing will have a big impact on the practice which has lost not only a business partner but one of its five doctors and that in its turn will affect us all and will require patience and understanding , as we look for appointments, over the next few months. Appointments not attended The Patients Group Represents all 9300 patients and is there to act as a conduit between the patients and the practice and vice versa. The committee has representatives from Harworth, Bircotes, Wadworth and Tickhill and all contribute without fear or favour. Quite rightly and in accordance with the data protection act we do not have access to patient data and accept, without question, the statistics shared with us which we make public. These are the same statistics which are passed to NHS Doncaster Care Commissioning Group and The Care Quality Commission. Anyone wishing to check on these figures can do so via these organisations. NHS Apprentices Along with many businesses the Medical Practice has Apprentices who are following a course in Business Administration. You may have encountered them working in reception or at The Saturday Flu Vaccine Clinic. These apprentices are learning on the job, they have mentors, are eager to learn and to help. It therefore saddens us to report that one of these young people was subjected to verbal abuse by a patient and was deeply upset and affected by this treatment Zero Tolerance Policy. It with equal regret that as a result of the above incident that we have to remind everyone that no NHS facility tolerates abuse and in line with other medical practices this practice has a policy regarding abuse which follows:
Lots of great stalls and a raffle in aid of Scouts. Who will also be serving refreshments. The stalls this time include Pins and Doodles, Edna’s Lair, Krafty Katz, Fluffy Bears, Little Goodies, plus knitted goods, sewing crafts, button pictures, books, jewellery and much more. Thank you for your support, this is a good fund raiser for Tickhill Scouts. T

“Violence or abuse towards any person on our premises will not be tolerated. It is the practice’s policy to remove anyone behaving this way from the list of patients. Arrangements would be made to register our patient with a practice in Doncaster which has special facilities enabling them to manage violent patients.” Please help to make the best outcome we can at this very difficult time. Thank you. T

Vehicle Crime There has been a recent decrease of vehicle crime in the last month, I would like to thank residents for making sure their vehicles are secure and not leaving any valuables on show inside the vehicle that would encourage persons to break into them. Please continue to be vigilant and ensure that you lock your vehicles and please do not leave anything inside the vehicle even if it not on show whether it be sat Navs, small change etc… as this may entice thieves to try to break into vehicles. I would also like to remind people that if you leave your vehicle insecure and items get stolen from within the vehicle, the majority of Insurance companies will not pay out due to the vehicle being insecure as they say it is negligence leaving the vehicle unsecure. Nottinghamshire Police have also recently successfully prosecuted several offenders that have had involvement in vehicle crime, which along with residents being extra vigilant have had a positive impact in reducing overall vehicle crime in the area.
Prosecutions of note over the past 2/3 months 2 Males from the Bircotes area were recently arrested and remanded in custody for an Aggravated Burglary at Langold in January 2015. Enquiries are continuing in relation to the Burglary. A Male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has recently been remanded in custody until June 2015 to appear at Nottingham’s Court for a trial in relation to witness intimidation and perverting the course of Justice. 22

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MARCH 2015 APPOINTMENT OF A NEW TOWN CLERK I am pleased to tell you that a new Town Clerk has been appointed. Her name is Wendy Davis, she lives near Retford, and she has a lot of experience. Hopefully she will be starting before Steve Bowman retires in May to ensure a smooth handover. People mistakenly think ‘that’s a nice little job, I could do that’…. WRONG. It requires a number of qualifications, including accountancy and employment law, plus the CILCA qualification, as well as people skills. I could never do the job – it requires a high degree of patience and diplomacy! EMPLOYMENT: THE NEED FOR LOCAL JOBS Our community has one of the highest rates of unemployment in Bassetlaw. The future plans for developments in our Town includes both housing and commercial growth, which in turn will create jobs, reassure future investors and retailers and boost our local economy. So far we have seen the appearance of new homes and investment from ASDA and ALDI, and it looks like the CoOp store will soon be occupied.
The Neighbourhood Plan identifies specific areas in H&B which we think are suitable for the different types of development – it puts them where we want to see them. So it was with some excitement that I learned about a proposal for a commercial/industrial development that will eventually offer jobs for local residents. The proposal is in the initial stages and details are still confidential, but the people who own the land will be consulting with you, the people of Harworth and Bircotes, about their plans. They have contacted me and are hoping to hear your views sometime in April. AND another company/ landowner has submitted a pre-planning application for a scoping exercise (which means checking out things like on-site environmental conditions) for another commercial site; they are looking at a future business park for Harworth…... so fingers crossed.
Within B.D.C. is a small team of highly qualified officers whose remit is to secure advantageous development and growth for the residents of Bassetlaw. They are proving to be quite successful and have attracted significant investment; not only do they talk to companies who are thinking of investing in the District, but they negotiate with Notts. County, Highways, Water Boards, Utility Companies and many other organisations. They also work across all departments within the District Council, talking to planners, architects, environmental and conservation officers. It is this team who have guided the investment – current and future – towards Harworth and Bircotes, and assisted greatly with the Neighbourhood Plan. They say success breeds more success:• A developer I met recently was quite excited by the changes he saw in the Town, and

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED this resulted in a further successful meeting with other members of the company. • We have seen the approach from the Police to work with the Town Council and share premises, and • We can see the start of the new build for Serlby Park – some of that funding came from the sale of land on Scrooby Road where houses are currently being built. • At last plans were drawn up/ implemented for new council houses to replace the Airey houses. No council homes are being built anywhere else in Bassetlaw; the first houses should be ready by July. • Money has been set aside to improve access to H&B from Blyth Roundabout; I am hoping further investment will be made for Harworth Crossroads and have asked for details. • I am waiting to hear if the Government will give Harworth Colliery site Housing Zone status; I know they are through to Round Two. • And let’s not forget the fantastic Multi-Use Games Area recently installed on the Tommy Simpson Field. Residents used to say “we are a forgotten community” – well, not anymore! The growth plan for Harworth and Bircotes is about more than
just houses, it’s also about jobs; as a resident of this community and as both a Town and District Councillor I fully support the plans for bringing new dynamics into our Town. I am aware not everyone welcomes change; I hear occasional comments e.g. “why do we need all these houses?” Oddly enough, this is just what the several hundred residents of Old Harworth said when the mine opened and Bircotes was built, all those years ago. Let me tell you why H&B will change, develop and grow – it’s because this is not about you, or me, it’s about our children, our grandchildren, and giving them and their community a future. BROADBAND IMPROVEMENT H&B Town Council have received a consultation letter about a proposed upgrade to the telecommunications radio base station on land off Scrooby Road. The letter tells us:• Vodafone Ltd. And Telefonica UK have agreed to jointly manage a single network across the U.K. • They are in the process of upgrading their existing telecommunications radio base installation in H&B; it will be managed by Telefonica. • This will enable the site to be 4G capable and improve the
2G/3G capacity, thus meeting the growing demand for high speed data access due to the growth of the smartphone and tablet devices market The proposal relates to the existing 20m. Monopole and 300mm Transmission dish. The installation of a replacement Monopole of the same height will also include 6no replacement antennas, 2no 300mm Transmission Dishes, 3no RRU’s mounted below the antennas, plus alterations within a ground based equipment cabin. (Phew!) The accompanying plan shows this will be sited at the rear of the Recreation Ground where the current mast sits. Any comments can be made to the company about this proposal, H&B Town Council will provide you with the contact details. ROAD WORKS WARNING: MONDAY 2ND MARCH TO TUESDAY 10TH MARCH 2 way temporary traffic signals will be operating on Snape Lane, to allow new water connections to be installed. NO BANK IN TICKHILL Tickhill residents have learned that their HSBC branch will close in April. They have previously lost 25
NatWest and Santander; they will now be left with no banking facility at all. Sound familiar? It’s almost as if the Banking Industry is driving us away from what we expect and value from them; I see it as manipulating us into online-banking, regardless of if we can’t/don’t want to use this option. SPEEDING ON BAWTRY ROAD I have received a number of complaints from concerned residents about this issue, and so I have contacted a senior manager at N.C.C. Highways, plus two County Councillors. He tells me he will ask one of his team to look into this further (I have noted the date!) yet I know they have already visited Bawtry Road at the insistence of County Councillor Sheila Place. TO MAKE YOU SMILE Years ago I was working as a nurse on night duty when an elderly gentleman was admitted to the ward as an emergency. Undressing him ready to put him into bed, I discovered he was wearing combinations – not flannel, not thermal, but knitting wool. They were made of beige 4 ply wool with a fleck of maroon, had ribbing at the wrists and ankles, buttons up to the neck and a proper ‘fly’ on the pants. The old gentleman told me they had been hand knitted by his patient wife. I remember my amazement at this act of dedication; what I would call a true labour of love!
