Finally, the winter is behind us, and, after spring has been delayed, experts are now suggesting that we should get outdoors and enjoy our gardens and local outside spaces and look out for a riot of colourful plants and shrubs all flowering at once, during a shortened spring period. Apparently by midMay we will move into summer – but I will believe that only when it happens! As the months fly by we once again enter the final term of the school year and move into exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard this May. We have a year of respite this year! No major exams and no dreading the August results day! The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th May. June is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to get the details to me in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Thank you. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.
Best wishes,

Club Sponsor
With the Club now virtually at full capacity, we recently held our 2nd Annual Club Championships in March. This is a Club-only event and is a great opportunity for all our swimmers, including the under-9s, to compete in a friendly atmosphere. The under-9s swam in 25 m races and the 9s-and-overs swam 50 m and 100 m races. Their times in each event were converted to FINA points – those with the highest points in age categories will receive extra recognition by means of a trophy. With approximately 60 of our swimmers participating it was a hectic but fun evening, which everyone enjoyed. It was also great to hear the feedback from swimmers and parents about how much they had enjoyed the event. By the time this article goes to print, we will have celebrated the success of all the swimmers at a Presentation Evening with awards, trophies, plus speeches and entertainment. We are a small Club but we have come a long way. The Club is run mostly on a voluntary basis and at the Club Championships we had no less than 20 volunteer parents who helped out in various roles – these are parents who commit regularly by Coaching, being part of the Committee, or as Timekeepers and other poolside officials, plus other parents who stepped in and helped out with the multitude of other roles needed to successfully run an event like this. A big thank you to you all for your continued support.

Why you’re NEVER too old to take up yoga.
As a yoga teacher in my 66th year, (where on earth did that time go?!), I’ve become even more aware that if I want to keep being able to do all the things I want to do – I need to look after my health.
The reality is that for many of us as we age, we not only move less than perhaps we should, but years of poor posture, less than healthy eating habits and the onset of conditions such as arthritis, diabetes or blood pressure to name but a few, start to take their toll. I read somewhere recently – that we humans are living longer – but living sicker. But what is the point of adding another decade to our life span if that life is riddled with pain or health challenges which prevent us from actually living? I know there are some things life throws at us we simply cannot control or predict. But, almost every doctor you speak to, or article you read, or TV programme you watch (and there are plenty these days on TV telling us how to stay younger!) all these sources seem to agree on one thing: our lifestyle has a dramatic impact on how we age. You don’t need me to tell you how important exercise is. But finding the right kind of exercise which will support your health and yet be enjoyable enough for you to actually keep it up is not always easy. If you’ve never tried yoga – or maybe dabbled a while ago but done nothing since – it’s worth giving it a try. You’re NEVER too old, too inflexible or too weak to do yoga because…. Yoga is NOT a competitive sport! You work to your own point of challenge – which will be different to everyone else’s – but as you do, you will gradually improve, without strain or injury. 8
HARWORTH TODAY
Yoga encourages you to actually become more aware of your body – and if you’re in the right kind of class, which doesn’t go too fast, gives you time to understand some basic safety principles, you can adjust either deeper into a stretch or pull back – so you get just the right level of challenge for your body. For so many other types of exercise, we are still attached to our phones, watching TV screens or our mind is completely elsewhere - and we don’t realise we’ve done too much till it’s too late. Yoga can help you learn to manage pain or other conditions through breathing and relaxation techniques. I can think of no other form of exercise which can help you understand how to manage stress or pain than yoga – and even the scientific research is showing this is more than just baseless claims. The truth is - saying you’re too old/inflexible to take up yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to have a bath!! My oldest students are in their 80’s. It is NEVER too late. So, search out a class you feel might be suitable for you – try more than one teacher or style – sometimes it takes time to find the teacher who is the right “fit” for you – but it’s worth looking! And know that you could be on the way to forming a new habit which can massively change your health for the better!

LIFTING… It is often with a wry smile that a patient
recalls (confesses!) to hurting their back whilst lifting! There are many instances where we all need to lift both at work and in the home. There are the obvious scenarios encountered by trades people and healthcare workers, the not so obvious cases of admin staff lifting heavy amounts of paperwork or people for whom travel plays a major part of their work which requires the handling of suitcases/computers/files etc. Then there are the parents who have babies and toddlers (plus ‘gear’) to lug about…the keen gardener who just needs to get the job done…not to mention the DIYers!... Here’s some tips on lifting with care… 1. Plan What needs to go where? Do you need help? Are there any obstructions? 2. Spread the strain Allowing your back AND hips AND knees to bend as you lift prevents the strain affecting just one body area.

3. Keep the load close to the waist 4. Stay stable Your feet should be apart to give you a stable base and you should endeavour to move your feet during the manoeuvre in order to maintain this stability. 5. Don’t twist Once you are holding the load, move your feet in the direction you want to go rather than twisting the spine 6. Keep it smooth If you are needing to jerk or snatch the load then you haven’t got full control Trust your instincts…if it seems like a bad idea, it probably is! Our spines are designed to cope with moving and handling objects but won’t withstand misuse.

Name: Tabitha Male Sex: Age: 8 years Came into care: Feb 2018 Good with dogs: No Good with cats: Not tested Good with children: Older Tabitha has come into care with her buddy, Elphaba, as unfortunately they weren’t getting along with the new baby in the household. They were both rehomed from Mayflower several years ago but have had to be returned. Tabitha has settled better than Elphaba and is usually happy to greet visitors for fusses. She can be very vocal when the mood takes her and purrs like a tractor. A home with Elphaba would be perfect but not essential if the right home came along seperately. Tabitha would be happy in a home with children providing they give her space and time to settle around them. She hasn’t met dogs so we are unsure how she would react. Could you offer this little lady that 2nd chance she deserves?

He took a while to come out of his shell, but once he trusts you he loves attention and will gladly sit wiht you all day. Due to his nervous nature in the past we are suggesting older children only and a family who will give him time to get to know you. He has a sweet nature and will be a great companion. He tries to be clean in his kennel and once he has a routine this will not be a problem.

The NHS 70th birthday party
Reminder that the Birthday parties to celebrate the work of the NHS over the past 70 years will be hosted by the PPG on June 8th at Harworth Town Hall and on June 22nd in The Parish Rooms Tickhill. There will be an opportunity for patients to look back on the history of the NHS in the form of a timeline for the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery, celebrating medical advances and positive patient experiences. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about blood and organ donation as well as finding out who to contact for advice and support for minor ailments when a GP appointment isn’t appropriate. All this whist raising money for the Doncaster Scanner appeal through refreshments and stalls.
AGM of the patients group
Completed forms must be given in at reception at either site or to the secretary by May 2nd 2018. Six places will be up for election and patients are encouraged to stand for election by self-nomination. Forms are still available at both sites from reception.

The Clinic Commissioning Group for Doncaster NHS calls a set number of training days a year on Wednesday afternoons which are COMPULSORY for all staff. On these afternoons cover is provided by the on-call service and NHS 111 and as always Emergencies are covered by the hospital and the 999 ambulance service.

The telephone system at the surgeries
Thank you to all patients who reported that they were on occasion moved back in the queue on the telephone holding system. The Practice Manager instigated a full check and monitoring of the system by the telephone company. As you can imagine no problems raised their heads during the monitoring period and everything performed as it should do. The company were not, therefore, able to offer an explanation of what was happening but reassured the practice that all the original settings were in place. It may be that it only happens under periods of high demand. The issue is still under review. In answer to the question as to the number of telephone lines. There are 4 lines in and 4 lines out.

Harworth Colliery Football Club MAY Update! Hello and a big welcome from all at the Football club for our monthly update, as we enter the final throws of the season, and one that promises so much still at present. At the time of writing the 1st team are still top of the table and with 6 games to go are in a strong position. If we achieve our aim of winning the league, it will then be down to the FA to decide if we are succesful in gaining promotion to the Northern Counties East, a league that the club has not played in since the mid eighties. This is not only great for the club, but for local lads who have stayed loyal to us through recent times, like Josh Davies (Pictured with March Player of Month) this was the long term aim 5 years ago to improve the facilities and make step 6 status. Our last home game of the season is Saturday the 5th of May against Retford FC a team that will be coming to upset any potential party, we would love to fill the ground that day and give the players a home send off they deserve so please save the date in the diary. Not to count our chickens but if we are to go up we have some work to do with our floodlights and will require sufficient funding, gaining new sponsors into the club such as Screwfix is absolute key to the future of the club, we will be looking for further sponsors throughout the summer and will have a number of options to suit any budget so any local busineses out there then please get in touch. It could be a very succesful end of the season for the club as a whole with both the Ladies and MUSC Sunday sides getting through to their respective Cup Finals, so we wish them well. Keep a check on the dates of those as they are

yet to be decided. The Reserves look like they will achieve their best finish in a many a year following an excellent run of results. The new management have come in and brought in new players and really galvanised things and stresses players play for the club not just specific teams. The Juniors will be coming to the end of their seasons and sure all have had a thouroughly enjoyable one (once it stopped raining and we could get on with games again). The Mini Kickers has also started up again on a Saturday Morning. This has been highly succesful in gaining new teams for the mini soccer side so lets hope this can happen again. But the main thing is that young players come up and just enjoy learning and playing the game in a fun and safe environment. The Youngest age group we have is Under 7’s who have enjoyed a great first season, here they are pictured with Shirt sponsors JL Recovery & Transport, many thanks to Jake Lakin for his backing and support of the youngsters. So by the time the next update comes out we will know if all the hard work has paid dividends on and off the pitch, please try and get up on the 5th of May, your support is invaluable to us and as a community we should all be proud of the club we have right now. All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Many thanks Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@ hotmail.co.uk @jonycw 07979958255

TICKHILL & DISTRICT LIONS Your generosity really does make a difference. Recently we have helped two delightful local young children, with health and mobility issues. We have supported a national charity taking vulnerable children off the streets, before ‘the streets get to them’. We have also been able to help the Tickhill Library and the Bawtry Heritage Group. We have helped to run two Race Nights to support local community clubs in Rossington and Tickhill. None of this would be possible without your valued support.
Our due diligence protocol means that we meet every Tuesday evening to discuss and where necessary decide how to investigate all requests for help. Mostly, we support local good causes but where help is needed overseas we are able to direct money quickly and directly through our network of 45,000 Lions clubs worldwide.
We recently celebrated our 40th Charter Dinner at the Styrrup Golf Club where almost 80 paying Lions and guests raised more money to help worthy causes. Lion President Ron Lindsay presented a cheque to Mrs Jeanette Fish MBE of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Just some of the ways your donations and our service helps our community. Finally, in last month’s edition we advertised for new members. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch. We would love to hear from you. Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The Group held it’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 3 April 2018, and once again voted for the Committee to stand again, since they have been doing an excellent job. In their Annual Report they outlined the successes for the year, which included trips out to Millstones at Harrogate, York Christmas markets, Scarborough, and the pantomime at Retford, as well as a most enjoyable Christmas Lunch at Styrrup Hall Golf Club. The annual MacMillan Coffee morning had raised more than previous years, and other fund-raising events meant that cheques had been sent to Retford Hospice, and also Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The group had funded a defibrillator, which is now located on the outside wall at the Devonshire Road Community Centre, and the group are now looking to fund a further one for a different location in the town. Several members had attended an Emergency First Aid course, which had included use of the defibrillator. Some members are working on the Community Action Group, which runs the Vintage Luncheon Club for over 80s and those who are socially isolated, as well as helping with the Cinema Club, and other events organised for the Town. The weekly coffee shop and book-stall at the Town Hall on Thursday mornings goes from strength to strength, with proceeds going to deserving causes. ALL SAINT’S CHURCH, HARWORTH
– serving Harworth & Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley On 20th March we held our Annual Parochial Church meeting. This is a formal and legal meeting which is held annually. Reports on all Church affairs, Treasury, Worship, Social, Bell Ringers etc are recorded and inform us what has been happening throughout the year. When we looked at the reports, we realized just how very busy we have been and how much we have achieved, even though throughout the year we have been in vacancy. It is also a formal nomination and acceptance of Church Wardens, Deanery Synod Representative and Parochial Church Council.
are displayed in church. We are very grateful to receive these beautiful iconic figures.
Les Batty and myself, Ann Wilson were elected to serve as Church Wardens for another year. We are delighted to be able to serve our church and our parish. As Church Wardens we take our roles and responsibilities seriously; we were chosen at the APCM to represent not just the church family but the whole parish. We have also taken extra care to satisfy people’s needs for funerals, weddings and baptisms. This is more so during vacancy when the responsibility falls on our shoulders. Ian Archer our Chair and PCC members have wholeheartedly supported us and together we make a great team. Your PCC members are Joyce Letherland, Gerald Holian, Lyn Collinson, Ian and Pauline Archer, David and Marie Edwards, Liz Ellis, and Gillian Wratten We welcome Victoria Beaumont a new member to our Parochial Church Council. Gillian Wratten and Marie Edwards are our Deanery Synod Representatives. At our next PCC meeting we will elect a Lay Chair, Vice Chair, Deputy Warden, Treasurer and Secretary. There is no update on the Vicar vacancy.

Our Easter Holy Week services in Church have been wonderful. On Easter Day we used the new Gospel donated by Mr. Wright (first Colliery Manager) daughter and son-inlaw, Julie and David Horncastle. The children (and adults!) enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt and hot cross buns after the service. Sadly on Tuesday 3rd April St. Patrick’s Catholic Church held their last service as their church is to be demolished, the building has been deemed unsafe. We asked if there were any items they would us to have so thereby keeping a link to their church. It was kindly agreed by Father Peter Hunt to donate the Stations of the Cross. These will be dedicated in our church by Father Peter in the near future before they 32 HARWORTH TODAY

Ground Control
You can’t go wrong with a geranium. They grow well where other plants struggle, particularly those shady areas, or parts of the garden with poor soil. And they are so useful - they provide hundreds of pretty flowers and also smother the ground with a welter of leaves that prevent weeds from taking hold. Don’t confuse these hardy geraniums with the tender bedding plants with the horseshoe leaf-markings. They may be commonly called geraniums but they are in fact pelargoniums and not hardy so would perish in a hard frost. True geraniums are as tough as old boots. There are loads to choose from offering a wide range of colours and habits. If you want a carpet of tiny pale pink saucer flowers try Geranium sanguineum striatum. It’s great for growing in the crevices of a garden path, or even in a shallow tub or sink where its finely cut leaves show of the flowers to their best advantage. Geranium macrorrhizum is probably the most reliable ground cover of them all. It creates a low dense mass of aromatic hairy leaves about 30cm / 12 inches high. The flowers open in late spring and there are varieties in white, pale pink or magenta. These are followed by bright red seedheads providing interest well into the autumn.
34 HARWORTH TODAY
Propagation is ridiculously easy. Simply rip up a clump of the thick creeping stems and push them into the ground where you want them to establish. Make sure they don’t dry out and you can be assured of success. If you’d like a plant with a bit of height go for Geranium psilostemon. This grows to about 1.5m / 5 feet. It has deep magenta flowers with a black eye, and is a great self-seeder. If you struggle with a patch of denser shade I can recommend the blue-flowered Geranium himalayense, and also ‘Johnson’s Blue’. Both will form clumps about 30cm / 12 inches high. Whether you have a new garden which needs to be filled with colour, or an established garden with a few bald patches, plant hardy geraniums and you won’t be disappointed.

What is the evidence of being a Christian? Dear Friends,
I decided to undertake a lent course in March as part of my sabbatical project. I joined a group that discussed a book written by Peter Hollins entitled, “The orthodox heretic and other impossible tales”. We discussed only five chapters of the thirtythree and they were very challenging. In order to have a taste of the context of the material, I decided to procure the book and read it by myself. I found out that the first chapter, which we did not discuss, very thought provoking. It puts the question, “if Christianity were illegal, would there be enough evidence to convict you?” Thinking through the question reminds me of some Christians in other parts of the world where even some of their family members are giving up their relations to be prosecuted and even killed for being Christians. I wonder what the criteria would be to convict you as a Christian if you found yourself in a similar situation. The question of faith is often put to us when we fill forms in different aspects of life – job applications, pension, benefits, census, and so on. I wonder if you really mean what you put on the paper – Christian. What about when you
have a conversation and the issue of faith creeps up? I wonder whether you brush it aside or you are bold enough to talk about what makes you tick as a follower of Jesus. If you talk about your life as a Christian, is it because to you it is an imagination as a belief system or a mere tradition? For me, the evidence of being a Christian is reflected in living a life that reflects the love of Jesus. As Rollins puts it, it is “giving a voice to the voiceless, a place to the displaced, and standing up against the oppression perpetrated by those in power”. I wonder if can remind you that people encounter the presence of Christ in the lives of those who live out the way of Christ. Christ demonstrated a life of joyful simplicity, radical healing, and unimaginable love. This month, I wonder if I can suggest to you to live your life as being convicted as a Christian. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2018
Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine, and you can access the Council website and the Council Facebook page. Any queries: contact me or other councillors, we will, as always, try to help. Historic Snippets On my computer I have articles going as far back as 1923. They highlight the discovery at Harworth Colliery of the Barnsley seam, the plan to have an ‘up-to-date electrically worked colliery capable of raising 2,000 ton of coal per shift`, the link with the Great Northern section of the L.N.E.R. railway line at Scrooby and a new line to be connected with the old S. Yorkshire line near Tickhill. Another article headline is ‘Bircotes Model Village. The company is erecting an ideal model village on high ground near the colliery; there are already 200 houses completed and occupied, 40 HARWORTH TODAY
eventually 1500 will be built. The village will have churches, a shopping centre, a leisure facility, recreation grounds and schools`. The piece didn’t state who the company was, but I think it might have been Barber and Walker? The 1923 newspaper goes on to state that the total community of Harworth and Bircotes was expected to reach 10,000 population - wow, that really was forward planning! North Notts. Border School features in several articles. I can tell you that the first headmaster was Jackson Hudson, selected out of 50 applicants, and that he had qualifications in Hygiene and Horticulture - how times have changed! In 1924 the school was big enough for 200 children, in 1925 the Board of Education agreed to extend it to accommodate 408 more children, at a cost of £9,000. For those of us who attended the school, the rest, as they say, is history! Harworth and Bircotes Neighbourhood Plan Neighbourhood Plans contain lots of information about a community relating to geography, employment, economic status, population, housing, and connectivity with roads and motorways. They also contain previously agreed sites allocated for both housing and industrial development; our Neighbourhood Plan shows development sites previously agreed before we even started the process – it has to include, by law, any
such previous agreements, and this rule applies to every settlement writing a Neighbourhood Plan, where applicable. When the Neighbourhood Plan is completed it is examined by an Inspector, who follows up anonymously by visiting the area, checking the data and talking to local people. If the Inspector is satisfied, the Neighbourhood Plan is adopted; once adopted, it cannot be revoked and remains as a strategic document for 30 years. It is reviewed/updated on a 5-year basis. Questions from the Public: Why Have a Neighbourhood Plan? We knew Harworth and Bircotes was a designated ‘growth area` in Bassetlaw’s Plans, and that Harworth Estates were keen to develop the Colliery site, so it seemed fitting to have in place a Neighbourhood Plan which gives us a much greater say in new developments, such as Simpson Park and the Town Centre. Plus, we now have a Strategic Intervention Document from Bassetlaw District Council, just like Worksop and Retford, and a planned step-change programme for future improvements. What Are the Benefits? Town Council representatives meet regularly with Bassetlaw District Council and Harworth Estates to discuss proposals for their site; more importantly, they listen to our comments and suggestions and incorporate them into their plans e.g. safe traffic management around a future TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2018 primary school and now, a promise that a number of bungalows will be built at some time, on a part of the site close to local facilities. And, as a community we receive 25% of the Community Infrastructure Levy paid by developers; without a Neighbourhood Plan we would only receive 15%. This is money to be used towards the cost of improving the infrastructure, such as roads and junctions, and a new town centre. Was the Community Consulted? More so than usual, in fact the Inspector commented on the high amount of consultation carried out. A list of consultation dates/venues is available from the Town Clerk. UPDATE Neighbourhood Plan for Bawtry: this is now at the consultation stage, you can learn more on www. bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk/ neighbourhood.plan Transport arrangements to a new facility of Doncaster College, at Auckley. From September 2018, there will be a direct school bus for Tickhill, Harworth and Bircotes, and another for Barnby Moor, Ranskill and Scrooby. The cost will be a one-off payment of £280, I understand students can claim for a grant – believed to be around £150 – from Nottinghamshire County Council. Rail Services. The new fast service on the Sheffield to Retford line is likely to be introduced in December. At Worksop extensive restoration to platform canopies, guttering
and signal box is underway, and Retford has improved the waiting rooms on Platforms 3 and 4. Environmental improvements around the station and subway are continuing. Consultation with A1 Tenants about Bassetlaw District Council bringing A1 back ‘in house` ends May 25th. A1, an arms-lengthmanagement-organisation, or ALMO, was created by the District Council purely to access the Decent Homes Government fund and thereby improve Bassetlaw’s council housing stock – that funding ended some years ago. However, the decision to end the ALMO as a separate administration means that Housing Services staff will now be managed by the District Council, services will continue as normal and there will be no disruption to tenants – staff will continue to work from offices at Carlton Forest, and the brand name A1 will remain. Re-Location of Worksop Police from their current building on Potter Street into the District Councils Queen’s Building Wing will happen later this year. This brings a number of advantages for Bassetlaw residents, one being that the C.I.D. Team will move from Mansfield back to Bassetlaw. It seems they absorb grease from the pizza, and contaminate the other waste collected in blue bins. So now we know, folks. I am pleased to tell you that plans are in progress for a new play area on the corner of Thompson Avenue and Amanda Road. A1 tell me the landscaping plan has been done, equipment is on order, and the programme of work will shortly be with me. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2018 certainly a success, with quality clothes from reputable highstreet brands available in the widest range of sizes. £401 pounds was raised for use towards another Community Event for families, which will be held on May 19th to celebrate the Royal Wedding. Everyone had a really good time, I must thank local volunteers and models who made the evening such a success, and special thanks to Karen Tarburton whose idea it was - Karen broke off her holiday to attend and oversee the event. The Town Council hopes to hold a repeat show in the autumn…. I can strongly recommend it, ladies. Community Stars During the recent snowy weather, some of you may have noticed a young man riding a small truck, spreading grit/salt on local roads and thereby making them much safer to drive on. Who is this mysterious hero who is out battling the elements in the early hours when the rest of us are still in our warm beds? I can reveal it is John Durdy, who does a brilliant job much appreciated by the rest of us. Well done, that man, he’s a real star!
To Make You Smile During the really cold weather in March, I was preparing to join friends at an evening outdoor event. Warm coat, scarf and gloves were duly assembled, all I needed was my glamorous fur hat, which looks as if it came straight out of Dr Zhivago! I normally keep it in a bedroom cupboard; strangely, it was missing. I climbed onto the bed to access a row of units overhead, stood on a stool to reach other high cupboards, opened every wardrobe and drawer – no luck. I repeated this performance in the other bedrooms, but the hat was nowhere to be found. By this time my back was really hurting, so I sat for a while, trying to think where the hat could be. A sudden thought crossed my mind – was it stolen last year by the burglar? So please, if you see a man wearing a large, fluff y grey fur hat with shades of black at the tips, ring the police – that’s my hat he’s wearing!
