SCROOBY ROAD CONVENIENCE STORE

Welcome to

the MAY 2014 edition

“So many books, so little time.” Frank Zappa Last month I talked about reading, and I am really hoping that by the time you read this I will have managed to polish off a book or three from my ‘want to read’ list. I am writing this, only days after you received your last magazine, however, all being well you will be receiving this shortly after I return from a few days of Easter sunshine. A lazy trip is planned, with plenty of time for reading and generally relaxing – not that I shall be allowing my eldest to do too much relaxing, I’m afraid he will taking very different books with him, as he heads ever closer to impending GCSE exams! As always we welcome several new advertisers to the magazine this month, it must be the time of year that attracts lots of businesses to promote themselves. Whether contacting advertisers old or new please don’t forget to say where you saw their advert! The June issues will be delivered to you late May – around the time of the Bank holiday. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th May.

Enjoy April and I will back in a months’ time with your May magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Health Information Day

Charity Appeals For

‘Hosts With The Most’

Two “Thank you” messages and a warm welcome.

To Help Transform The Lives Of Lonely Elderly People In Doncaster

The overall figures showed that 89% of all patient ratings at the Colliery Surgery were good, very good or excellent and at the Tickhill Surgery it was 88%.

Firstly thank you to all those patients who completed the annual national Patient Satisfaction Survey questionnaires last October.

Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is appealing for volunteers in Doncaster willing to welcome a small group into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year. The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours. The monthly gatherings exist as a vital lifeline of friendship for the charity’s older guests, however, the regular outings for the popular group in Doncaster are currently under threat due to a lack of volunteers able to host the tea parties. Contact the Elderly’s North and Midlands Executive Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Doncaster is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a decent sized teapot is eligible! Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” T 8

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

The full results can be seen on the practice website or in the surgery waiting room. However, only patients who attend an appointment during the survey period are eligible to complete one of the forms. In October 2013 97 patients from the Colliery Surgery provided feedback and 121 from the Tickhill Surgery. As there are 9,200 patients registered with the practice this means only 2.36% of people have had the opportunity to express their views. As all patient’s opinions are important. We want to enable everyone to give us their thoughts. With this in mind “contact us“ forms are now available in both surgeries. By completing one of these it enables patients to ask questions, provide feedback and make suggestions. When completed these can be posted in the Comments Box at either surgery. Or why not email us at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com We will also be canvassing your views at our events, open meetings, galas and flu clinics. Secondly a big thank you to Graham Daniel the practice manager who retired at the end of February. He together with Dr David Fearns and Mrs Julie Dodd the Deputy Practice Manager, were the key figures in establishing a Patients Group and it was their hard work and dedication in ensuring that the patients group was kept informed and linked to other agencies that has given us, the patients, a real chance to ensure our voices are heard. A big welcome to the new Practice Manager Mr Russell Gardner who started mid March. We hope he has a long and enjoyable relationship with the practice and patients. community Our building work has started and we are all getting very excited. We have been left a sum of money from a lovely benefactor with the proviso that the money went towards a project. We have needed a new Reception area for quite some time and this has given us the opportunity to start this new build. We hope that other kind hearted people can contribute to help us finish this project.

Finding a forever home

The reception will enable us to offer a warm friendly and inviting environment; we will also then be able to offer group and school education sessions and seminars to help educate children and adults about caring for animals. The ongoing work will be a little disruptive so please bear with us when you come along to view any of our dogs and cats. A big thank you to all the Mayflower Angels that have brought washing powder, washing up liquid, black bags etc this has saved us a fortune. Please everyone feel free to contribute if you would like to. This is a great benefit to us. We still have some lovely puppies that need good homes, if you think you can give a puppy a home and have bags of patience and energy please come and see us. We also have some beautiful dogs and cats waiting for that special person to give them a home. We have had to re arrange one of our fund raising events. The photo shoot for your beloved pet has been postponed to the 6th July to coincide with our Scruffs Dog Show in Tickhill. 10

The arrangements for our Black Tie Ball are well under way and the local community are being very generous in providing auction prizes. The event is being held on Friday 20th June at Mount Pleasant Hotel which promises to be a fabulous evening. Please call to book tickets which are ÂŁ35 each, this includes dinner 3 course meal, disco, auction and raffle, also a photographer to capture you looking beautiful in your evening dress. This is one of largest fundraisers so please help us make it a special night.

Do you suffer with headaches unnecessarily?

Headaches are something most of us are familiar with – whether it’s the occasional alcohol induced fog or a more debilitating weekly occurrence. But did you know that problems in the neck are estimated to be the cause of headaches in 18% of the population? (Other causes include migraine, cluster headaches, tension headaches and serious pathology). Stiffness in the joints and tissues of the spine can cause headaches with the patient typically experiencing a dull ache or boring pain on one or both sides of the head or face. Accompanying symptoms can include nausea, blurred vision, dizziness or light-headedness. These headaches may be occasional or frequent and can last from a few hours to a few days. Patients (more often female than male) usually have a long history of headaches and may have visited their GP many times over the years. Symptomatic treatment using painkillers is often unsatisfactory in the long term. If you have headaches like this, it could be that the root cause of the problem is in the neck. An appointment with a physiotherapist would enable them to assess and test your neck to establish the presence of any movement dysfunction in the spine which could then be corrected with appropriate manual therapy techniques, exercise and advice. Meanwhile, keep your neck healthy by checking your posture, taking regular breaks from any activity where your neck is held in one position, relaxing if you are prone to stress to reduce tension across your shoulders and avoiding using too many pillows in bed.

Garden View

A Thorny Issue Whatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional English gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again. Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. That said they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the 60’s with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion. Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you 16

need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil. Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle. Problems include; brown scale, rose aphids, rose leaf-rolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said there are disease-resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent. For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact. On a sunny wall try; Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’, a great repeat flowerer with small double pink flowers, ‘Lady Waterlow’ for silky pink blooms and healthy foliage, ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for exquisite scent, or ‘Etoile de Hollande’ for a splash of rich scarlet red. Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester Cathedral’ which look fabulous when under planted with lavender or lush low growing evergreens. Finally for a wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’.

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

Burglaries in the Area There have been several successful arrests in relation to burglaries where last month it was reported that currently there are 2 males and 2 females from separate incidents currently on police bail pending further enquiries in relation to Burglary offences in the Harworth/ Bircotes area. Over the past month there have been further arrests and charges in relation to Burglaries :There has also been another Male arrested and charged for burglary in the Harworth and Bircotes area and due to appear in Court in May 2014. A male has also been arrested and charged for conspiracy to commit Burglaries in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire area. The male is due to appear at court in April 2014. T 20

A Male is due to appear at court on 23rd April 2014 for 3 x shop thefts and failing to attend initial court hearing where it is anticipated he will enter a guilty plea.

Theft from Vehicles We have seen an increase in thefts from vehicles over the last month in the Harworth and Bircotes area where most of the vehicles have been left insecure, we strongly urge people to ensure that they lock their vehicles and do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be for Sat Navs, small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is that Insurance companies tend not to pay out if you leave your vehicle insecure and it gets broken into or stolen, so please double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked. There have also been a number of thefts of catalytic convertors from vehicles in the area these have been from residential addresses. We would ask that you bear this in mind when parking your vehicle in order to try and make it as difficult as possible for someone to be able to remove the catalytic convertor from it. T

Dealing with doorstep callers With the arrival of spring there is likely to be an increase in doorstep callers offering to carry out gardening work such as tree cutting, selling of compost also roof and driveway cleaning and sealing. Whilst these callers may well be genuine callers, we’d like to remind residents to carefully consider accepting work from cold callers who knock on your door. If there are problems with the goods they sell or the work they do you may struggle to contact them again, you could end up paying more than you thought you had agreed to, and are likely to have little recourse. You should always ask to see some identification from callers at your door. Genuine callers will normally make an appointment first and carry identification from their company with their photograph on. Most organisations have a telephone number that you can call to verify the representative’s identity. We would usually advise not to use the number stated on their card as it could be false, and suggest looking up the company in the telephone book or on the internet. To find details of trusted traders in your area you can use the Buy

With Confidence scheme. Buy With Confidence is run by Trading Standards - Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council - with support from Age Concern and Consumer Direct. For further details visit www.buywithconfidence.gov. uk . If you don’t have internet access you can call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 and they can help you find the traders that you need. The scheme cannot guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong, but members of the scheme must deal with complaints fairly, and Trading Standards will help both sides to reach a fair solution. For further advice on dealing with unexpected callers please see our dealing with unexpected callers guide. If you are concerned about cold callers in your area you can call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or in an emergency 999. Please pass this information to family members, friends, neighbours and anyone you think maybe vulnerable.

MY QUEST

on and then finally visit every one of them and place a cross on each grave and a wreath on each memorial, in every theatre of operations. As a personal project I will be visiting all those killed from Clarborough, Hayton, Welham, Clayworth, Mattersey Village and Harworth & Bircotes. I have been researching for the last 2 years and now we are ready to go. The plan was to start with our 1st trip with a 1 day run out to Ypres visiting about 30 graves and laying a wreath at Tyne Cot Memorial Wall and the Menin Gate. Ron Murray a 80 years young veteran kindly agreed to lay the wreath’s for us to get us started. This was done on the 8th March 2014. After this we shall be visiting Germany

My name is Pete Cox, I am caretaker at Clarborough Primary School and Drum Major of The Harworth Corp of drums. My friend’s Paul Stephen (Nobbie), Darren (Daz) and myself decided over a few beers in the beautiful city of Ypres one warm summer’s evening in 2011, waiting for the Last Post Ceremony, that we must do something special for the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Great War 1914. A plan was developed that we would find everyone who appeared on the Retford War Memorial. Once done, find where they had died, where their graves were or if they were never found what Memorial they appeared

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2014 be prioritised on a safety-first basis, so major roads, junctions, crossings and high crime areas come first. Highways are also experiencing a very high number of fault reports and are working hard to address these, they apologise for the delay and will carry out the repair as soon as possible.

HIGHWAYS I have had cause to raise a number of issues with Highways.

FRACKING I recently attended a meeting on this subject; lots of questions were asked about safety, pollution, earthquakes, and the risk of higher house insurance and falling house prices in areas where there is fracking. I later had a word with the managers of IGas and asked about Harworth and Bircotes…. It seems that where there was previously coal mining, the fracking process becomes very complicated, and therefore the chances of fracking happening in our community are, I am told, very low.

1. Cancellation of proposed carriageway resurfacing on East and West Street: I received notice of this the day before work was due to start on 7th March; I asked why the job had been cancelled and was told this was due to ‘various technical reasons’ – not good enough, Highways! Further enquiries have shown that the real problem was not enough money left in the budget to complete the job. April signals the start of the new financial year for County and I am assured the job will now be done in December. 2. Replacement of street light columns along Scrooby Road. You will have noticed that where some street lights stood, there are now stumps wrapped in black and yellow tape. Apparently the base of the columns had rusted so had to be removed; managers tell me the contractor has promised new lights will be in place by May. 3. Hill Road Faulty Street Light. Highways tell me they are responsible for 107,000 electrical maintenance assets – lighting columns, bollards, signs, etc. – and repairs have to

My thanks go to County Councillor Kevin Greaves for his assistance.

HORSES... ... A very helpful lady rang me to explain that, as a horse-owner, she rides on the highway but not the paths. On the rare occasion when the horse has to use the pavement and also leaves a pile of manure, she always returns and removes the mess.

& DOGS A lady on a mobility scooter stopped me to complain about dog fouling. She had previously challenged a man whose dog had left a pile on the pavement; his response was ‘The Council is paid to pick it up’. WRONG! It is his dog, his responsibility, and he should do right by others who live in this community. Council is always willing to install extra dog bins, so tell us where else you want them. And please, keep your dog away from designated child play areas.

LIST OF TOWN COUNCILLORS CLLR MRS JUNE EVANS Chairman 49 – 51 Bawtry Road, Harworth DN11 8PA Tel: 743239

TO MAKE YOU SMILE I recently changed my car, so instead of my grey dog-friendly box-shaped vehicle I now have a sleek 2 litre automatic, which is a joy to drive. There is, however, a problem – it is silver, as are many other cars, and I keep ‘losing’ mine in car parks. I recently returned to the car park and pressed the fob to unlock my car, but nothing happened, despite repeated attempts. Tugging at the door confirmed my worst fear – I was locked out. A gentleman in a car nearby who had obviously been watching me called out “I think that is the wrong car, love, yours is the one behind”. He was right, and I thanked him for his assistance, but the grin on his face confirmed that he thought I was a total moron!

And There’s More….. A construction company is now taking measurements at the rear of the Community Information Centre in readiness for the building of an extension; this, and half of the original building, will be the new base for the Police. We continue to make progress on the Neighbourhood Plan; I am still pressing for a traffic management plan, and have invited representatives from Notts. County to come here and help get something better for the future. June Evans Chair, Harworth & Bircotes Town Council

community We have a couple of great events this month from The People-For you. Nottingham Playhouse are touring a WW1 commemorative play – The Second Minute –and the Donni Folk Festival with some great musicians playing in the Town. Many people’s image of folk music is a bearded old guy with his finger in his ear. This is folk music, but not exclusively. Fantastic harmony singing and rousing sea shanties I do love, but it is a broad church of brilliant musicianship and socialist lyrics and sometimes electric guitars. There is no such thing as a fascist folk singer – as the genre’s name declares it is music of Folk, of ordinary working people, those who tramped the Derbyshire hills for the rightto-roam or who were pressed into service . If you only see Chris Wood to hear his song of the murder of Jean Charles de-Menezes you will have spent your money well.

Village Ventures this month presents: Nottingham Playhouse are touring their play The Second Minute round Nottinghamshire this month and it will be playing at Bircotes Town Hall on Sunday 11 May at 7.30. To mark the centenary of the WW1 and based upon the archive letter collection of the Sherwood Foresters regiment, this poignant and uplifting production weaves together heroic comic and heartbreaking tales of soldiers and families through their own words. In doing so the play explores how this most elemental and vanishing form of communication managed to hold the country together whilst a generation of men was being destroyed. tickets: 010320 752642 or call into the Hall £8/£4 child/ £18 family ticket www. villageventures.org.uk T
