2015 edition
How the months seem to be flying by! I have had a very busy month since last writing, although it has also included a relaxing break with my family enjoying a sunny week in Lanzarote during the Easter holidays. As soon as last months magazines went to print I set about emptying my kitchen and ended up with boxes piled high in the garage and my study and by the time the magazines arrived from my printers my old kitchen had been stripped of the old cupboards. The magazines and all of their accompanying leaflets were sorted from the corner of the kitchen surrounding by large boxes containing the new kitchen cabinets and various new appliances! Good job the weather remained dry as we also had boxes of magazines all over the driveway! The kitchen is now complete apart from a little decorating that will be done as soon as I have this magazine to print. Andy and David of AJ Installations have done a fantastic job, looking after all aspects of the refit and helping to ensure everything went smoothly with as little disruption as possible. A big thank you also to Stuart at DC Interiors for all his design input; helping me include the features I really wanted, home visits checking on progress and the supply of a beautiful kitchen which maximises the space available. I’ve only waited 10 years to get this kitchen!
The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th May. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, Every person and every institution has a birthday and the church is not different. The church’s birthday was at Pentecost day, which is about 50 days after Easter Day. It is also called Whitsun but it does not usually fall on the Whitsun holiday weekend in the U.K. On Pentecost Day, Jesus’ disciples, who were in a locked room because they were afraid of being arrested or persecuted, had a wonderful experience. As they prayed, a rushing wind came into the room and the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also empowered the believers in Jesus to praise God in many languages that they had not learned in the ordinary manner (Acts 2:5-13). The result was that the timid disciples became bold and powerful. They also spoke about the resurrected Christ and the Lord increased their number. Symbolically, this miracle reminds us that the church is multilingual, multicultural, and multiracial. It is a community in which all people are drawn together by God’s love in Christ. The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 3:28: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” We rarely get a heavenly wind and tongues of fire anymore. Nevertheless, God pours out his Spirit upon all who put their faith in Jesus Christ and become his disciples. He also calls us to be a peaceful community that celebrates diversity in its many forms. As we gear ourselves for the general elections this month, I wonder if I can encourage each one of us to vote. This act of voting is part of the power given to us as members of a peaceful community. Not every person in the world has this wonderful privilege so please use it. Secondly, I wonder if I can encourage you to continue to engage with people who may be different from you especially, the under-privileged and people of other cultures and language. It is sometimes difficult but the Spirit of God will help you to do it if you are available. Talking of birthdays, may I take this opportunity to inform you that Harworth Methodist Church is 90 years in 2015? Hurray! As part of its celebration, the church is organizing a weekend of fun and thanksgiving on Saturday 16th May and Sunday 17th May respectively. Events planned for Saturday afternoon include a photo exhibition of the life of the church, a barbecue, games and stalls. An evening concert will crown the day. On Sunday, the Minister will lead a thanksgiving service at 10.30 a.m. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity that the Methodist Church in Harworth has provided for the community over the past 90 year. I wonder if I can take this opportunity to invite each an every reader to come and celebrate with us. Have a blessed season. Yours sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam

community y meow!
Hello everyonee ank and a big thank he response you for the we have had from last month’s feature. We have had some lovely people asking if they can help with fundraising, so that is a start. However we are not out of the woods yet and money is still tight. We are trying to attend as many of the fund raisers that we can over the summer months but we are still short of people to man stalls etc. Even though most of us work our holidays around our fundraising we are still in need of more volunteers. Could anyone man stalls for us at the events below. You would have to collect enough bric a brac (maybe from friends and family) to make money from a tombola stall, or if anyone has any other ideas that would work that would be fine. Otherwise we will have to decline these events. We have so many events being offered to us and we could do without declining them, but unfortunately we need volunteers.
Finding a forever home
Our Sanctuary has a small area in reception that you can purchase dog beds, toys, leads, harness’s and lots of other interesting bits and bobs. So even if you are not looking for a cat or dog please come up to our reception area and take a look at the numerous things on offer. There are really beautiful dog beds ranging from £5 to £15 pounds so come up and take a look. Now a little about our lovely dogs and cats. We still have Tia the chocolate Lab with a skin complaint that has given her bald patches but she is looking much better now and is the friendliest girl. We also have Olive the beautiful Springer Spaniel who is just longing for a new home of her own.
6th June Ranskill Primary School Festival 14th June Clumber Park, Fun Dog Show 12th July Town Fields Gala at Doncaster
So if you have any idea’s we will be happy to support you with literature and a gazebo. You will need a folding paste table as our tables will not go into a car. Unfortunately we have had to close our shop in the Manton area of Worksop but we are hoping to move our shop into Worksop itself in the not too distant future. We are also looking for volunteers to man our new shop. If this is to be a success we need the shop to be open 6 days a week, so if you have an odd day in the week or on a Saturday that you could give up to help us please let us know. We also need good quality items or unwanted gifts to fill the shop, so if you are having a change of decor and spring cleaning, please donate to us it will give us such pleasure to see our new shop full of quality items.

Jack the Jack Russell is still with us. He came in with his friends but they were rehomed immediately, it is so sad to see his little face week after week he desperately need a home full of love and cuddles . He is however a typical Jack Russell with attitude.
We re-homed May a beautiful black and white short haired cat 3 years ago, but unfortunately her mummy has gone into a Hospice she is very sad and needs another caring forever home.
2nd May: A Tombola (with a difference) will be held outside the Parish Room Tickhill on Scarecrow Festival Day. Please come along and say hello (and win something special!) 9th May: We are holding a Table Top sale at the Community Centre on Doncaster Road in Bawtry (just past the children’s nursery coming into Bawtry) Tables are limited and are £10 each. There will be tea and cakes to purchase. 17th May: We are holding our annual Sponsored Dog Walk in Bawtry Forest. Please call us for sponsor forms. There will be refreshments to purchase too. This is usually a beautiful fresh morning so bring your walking shoes and enjoy a walk before your Sunday lunch. 11th July: We will be rattling buckets on the streets of Doncaster so please come along and say hello. 12th July is our annual Fun Dog Show at Tithes Lane Tickhill, we all love this event as we are able to see lots of dogs that we have re-homed. If anyone would like to help with any event please call us 01302 711330 and just leave a message.
Please remember now the sun has at last appeared and I know we are all really happy to see the sunshine please remember don’t leave your beloved dog or cat in a hot car.

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The Group held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 7 April 2015. Members voted to keep the existing committee for a further year, as it was felt that they had done a sterling job. Plans for summer outings were discussed and it was decided to visit Beamish on Wednesday 27 May, and Whitby on 12 August. Members were not happy to hear that it is proposed to site a prefabricated building on land adjacent to Thoresby Close to serve as a pre school nursery, and will be sending a letter to Bassetlaw District Council, expressing their feelings, as the land is a designated play area. Members also learnt that the Town Council are proposing to trial a community bus service, to serve areas of the town not currently served by a bus service. This would do a figure of eight to get people to the town centre and back, and would need to be pre booked.
Sunday Rambles‌ Retford Ramblers Group are always happy to meet people who would like to join one of their Sunday walks. Experienced walkers or anyone just wanting to give it a try will be made welcome. Our Programme offers walks of varying lengths and in a variety of locations in our local area, in Lincolnshire and of course the Peak District. We walk on most Sundays and meet in the Chapelgate Car Park where car sharing is encouraged. Our Group is part of the national Ramblers organisation who are this year celebrating their 80th year. Ramblers are a charity dedicated to protecting the public rights of way which makes the countryside more accessible for everyone. Please contact us if you would like any further information or would like details of our forthcoming walks. Email retford.ramblers@gmail.com or telephone Mike on 01427 880984 T
Large bags of bones had been discovered in a car park, and it was thought there was some connection between this and someone who is believed to be killing deer and selling the meat in the town. Police to be informed. Inconsiderate parking on Baulk Lane is causing residents to step out into the road, which is dangerous, and the police will be informed, as this causes an obstruction. Concern was expressed at the lack of cooperation from BDC Environment Health Dept, and this will be communicated to the Chief Executive, who will be warned that the Guardian will be contacted if this continues. There was also concern about the abundance of rats in the area, and the lack of pest control. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 May 2015, starting at 10.30 am in the Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome. T
VE Day Commemoration. 70 Years The government have decided that the above will now be remembered. Sat 9th May Bells will be rung by Cathedrals & Churches throughout the Land, at 11:00 am. In the evening of the 9th May Beacons & Bonfires will be lit. garden view
Chelsea 19th - 23rd May
The Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion.
By Rachel Leverton Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watered-down version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots.
The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breath-taking.
For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land.
And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins.
In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day... Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavilion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes. Chelsea draws over 150 000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over five days instead of four, such is its popularity. 18
HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY
Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world.
The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia. Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come.

Speeding Vehicles At the recent Priority Setting meeting the issue of speeding vehicles has been raised as one of the three main priorities in the area. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has been working with local schools between January and March 2015 where the local beat team has been working with pupils from the school on active speed detection work in the area. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. In January to March 2015 there have been 5 days of speed detection work with the schools, approximately 1300 vehicles have been monitored with around 10 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2015 HARWORTH HOUSING ZONE It was with some relief and also great pleasure that I learned on Budget Day that Harworth will be one of the twenty housing zones outside London. I know how much work by both Harworth Estates and Bassetlaw District Council went into the bid; I am proud to say that Natalie Cockrell (now a B.D.C. Officer and originally from Harworth) contributed greatly to the application. The Government rule for any Housing Zone dictates a minimum of a further 750 houses; in total over 1500 houses could be built during the next decade on the colliery site. You won’t see houses quickly springing up, instead Harworth Estates tell me that being a Housing Zone enables them to complete the necessary remediation work more speedily and thus start on the construction plans earlier than planned. This is where the Neighbourhood Plan becomes so important, so that there are fresh green spaces, play areas, and eventually a primary school, and we want to ensure other community needs are met, such as pedestrian areas and cycling routes.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS: are you interested in helping deliver benefits to the community e.g. improve Snipe Park Wood or have a Community Transport Service? Are you willing to join a working group to make projects happen? Do you have ideas about what we need, or you think is achievable? If yes, then contact any of the people listed below: Wendy Davis - Town Clerk Anita Smith, Janet Flynn, Gillian Wratten, June Evans - Numbers are listed in this booklet AND HARWORTH SOUTH: A1 INDUSTRIAL AND LOGISTICS PARK For those of you who missed viewing the plans at the Town Hall on 16th April, this proposal is to develop the 84 hectare (207 acre) site to the south of Harworth between the A614 Bawtry Road to the east, and Blyth Road to the west, close to the A1(M). B.D.C. has identified Harworth as a strategic location
What will it mean for local residents? Jobs! – providing a future for local people, a secure income, and for some the opportunity to gain new skills. for employment growth and job creation, and it is believed that this commercial development will complement the significant planned growth in housing. The plan is for different types of employment: B1 is Business – offices, research and light industry. B2 is General Industry, and B8 is Storage and Distribution. I know discussions are ongoing about the local road network and potentially new road junctions; it is therefore important that people living nearby are consulted and any concerns they have be taken into consideration.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED meeting with A1, I was told Phase 1 should be completed by July and tenants will be able to move into their new homes. The houses are a mix of 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms, plus bungalows, and they are built with varying but complimentary coloured bricks and roof tiles. Following consultation with tenants, the name Smith Square will extend to include the new housing, apart from a small cul-de-sac known as Simpson Walk. Thanks for the co-operation from those residents on Smith Square whose house numbers have been changed. BIRCOTES POST OFFICE: PROPOSED MOVE TO NEW PREMISES AND BRANCH MODERNISATION District and Town Councillors have been advised that, following public consultation, Bircotes Post Office will move next door into The Pit Stop. This change, I am told, is part of a major programme of modernisation. There will be two tills on the retail counter in an open plan branch, longer opening hours, improved accessibility and the majority of Post Office products will still be available. Public Consultation ends 27th May; I understand posters giving information will be distributed, along with contact details, otherwise contact Wendy Davis, Town
Clerk. I have already sent my comments. TARMAC ON MAYFAIR CLOSE: Highways have notified me that re-surfacing work on both Mayfair Close and Saxon Way will begin 7.30 hours, Thursday 7th May. It will end 17.00 hours, Friday 8th May. Some residents may struggle, as 7th May is Election Day; you may also wish to ensure you have enough basic provisions in stock! Thanks to those residents who made their concerns known to Notts. County, fingers crossed this work will now happen and not be cancelled at the last minute! Solar Panels: let’s stop the rumours right now – the selection of which properties get solar panels has nothing to do with A1, the Town Council or benefit payments; it is entirely the responsibility of the firm installing them. Remember, out of 6,900 council properties across all Bassetlaw, the funding available for solar panels covers just 1,000, so the selection process is quite strict. Anyone who wants to see the email I received from the company carrying out the work should contact the Town Clerk. Advice Bassetlaw is a collaboration between several advice and support organisations e.g. Citizens Advice Bureau. Your Town

Council is currently having discussions with Advice Bassetlaw about offering their services from the Town Hall. GATEWAY SIGN ON BLYTH ROAD: at last the sign has been repaired and reinstalled, following the damage done by a car driven by a drunk driver WHO IS IT WHO repeatedly paints Swastika signs in the gents section of the public toilets? I can’t believe any sensible adult would do this – does the person responsible understand how offensive this is? This goes beyond graffiti in the mind of the British population – STOP IT, you idiot! FLY TIPPING: the dumping continues; seems the service road behind the shops is currently a preferred site – I have contacted several agencies for advice on how we can stop it in this site. PROBLEMS It isn’t the easiest job, being a Town Councillor. You are the butt for moans, criticism and sometimes nasty comments, often about issues you have no control over, and I am tired of telling some residents that this is not a paid job, it is done by people working VOLUNTARILY. fouling, fly tipping and selfish parking; furthermore it is your fellow residents, some of your neighbours or other people you may know who are doing this... Council needs your help, your support, your knowledge and information to tackle the problems. Recently, a young woman came to my house with photographs of rubbish and old tyres that had been dumped around the Town. All was on land belonging to private landowners, so technically it was their responsibility to move it. However, we took the photographs to Environmental Services, who agreed to move it when they saw how bad it was. I have to thank that young woman for her help; she certainly qualifies as a ‘good citizen’. TO MAKE ME SMILE Recently I have been in a rather dark place. However, when I was at my lowest ebb, a huge bunch of white roses arrived at my door, along with a very supportive message from a group of people living in this community. It made a real difference to me, it let a bit of sunlight into the pit I felt I had been pushed into, and it gave me the courage to carry on as a Councillor. Thank you to everyone for the encouragement and support you have given me.

Tickhill & District Lions Club s
The fifth Tuesday of the month has historically featured a social event with wives rather than a business meeting and on 29th March twenty nine of us enjoyed a meal, a general knowledge quiz and a chat at the Three Tuns in Stainton where the 63rd of our 65 Giant Easter Eggs was raffled off, and won by Lion Ken Green. Our sincere thanks are due to all the bars, clubs, restaurants and retail outlets which took one or more of our Easter Eggs and especially to all of you who supported the draws for those eggs. Your support, whether for the Christmas Float or any other fund raising initiative means a lot and is great encouragement to Lions in our efforts to provide help when we can. You will be aware that we aim to use the bulk of the funds available to assist local welfare projects and initiatives, but, just like our Government donating a percentage of GDP on foreign aid, we are aware that around the world serious tragedies occur and in many areas acute sickness is rife. Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) is an organisation supported by Lions Clubs which maintains a reserve of cash enabling it to assist urgent problems immediately rather than waiting to raise funds . Funds donated by Lions Clubs like ourselves also help to restore sight to over 3000 people round the world daily through cataract surgeries and have prevented serious vision loss for more than 30 million. 271 million treatments for river blindness have been provided through the building or expansion of 660 eye care hospitals and clinics and the treatment of many thousands of eye specialists and eye health workers. LCIF is therefore worthy of a little help from all of us. Dates for your Diaries On Friday 26th June we are holding a “Summer Bash 2015” in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers and Lions supporters not to miss. Tickets will be £20 with all proceeds to be donated to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. We can be contacted through the following: Email : contact@tickhill-lions.com Phone : 0844 963 2462 Our Website : www.tickhill-lions.com Our Facebook : facebook.com/tickhill.lions
