Harworth Colliery Football Club May Update! Hello all and welcome to the Football Clubs May Update a month where all our teams will bring their season to an end but with a few fixtures left to play for the 1st team its still up in the air whether survival has been secured so will be a nervy few weeks. Whatever happens at the end of the season on the pitch, off the pitch we simply couldn’t do any more, as a club in its first season for 3 decades in the NCEL we stand proudly as having the fourth highest average attendance, an amazing acheivement given the size of our community and the size and stature of others. As Chairman that makes me incredibly proud, each time we have asked for you to get behind us with every game you have, our Juniors have been there in large numbers and I can see that this season more than ever we are becoming a real club and that is all down to you so THANK YOU. We have worked so hard also to improve our faciities and we now have the Floodlights in place and further improvements are planned which we hope will both increase the attendances and improve spectators matchday experience. We wouldn’t be able to do this without both the volunteers and Committee we have in place and also the Sponsors that back the club at every oppurtunity.

game and well done to Judd Pashley from our U7’s who was picked as the winner with Isobel Butler runners up, thanks to all who took part and we look forward to having more inclusive competitions such as this. I would also like to thank Bradley Botterill and Farmhouse Choice for being Matchday Sponsor all season, donating a great Meat Raffle prize each week, that’s brought in much needed revenue for the club and certainly is very much appreciated. So we will see where we finish the season but what will be will be, we are covered for any eventuality. It’s not all about the 1st team though and the Reserves and U21’s will finish higher than they have done for some years and we also had an inaugural season for our U18’s and we hope that group can now kick on and integrate in with our seniors and push on. Also our Ladies have a Cup final to look forward to on April 28th at Dronfield Town so all in all it’s been a great season. We of course can forget our Fantastic Junior Section which is going from strength with numerous teams winning their leagues and others getting through to cup finals. The U15’s are at the Keepmoat on Monday the 6th May kick off 10am, if you can make it please show your support for them, they have also achieved promotion to the U16’s premier league so the future looks very bright indeed. May is always Presentation Month too with the Juniors spread out over the 3rd and 4th of May both at the Welfare Hall beginning at 6pm. Then the Seniors have theirs on Friday the 10th with doors at 7pm, if you can make either then please do so and show your support to those that have done so well throughout the Year. Again thank you to all who take their time out to back the club in any way that you do, we are humbled by the support this club receives and we look forward to pushing things further and further.

We will need that to continue and as a club I’m delighted that Jones and Co Solicitors have committed to be ground sponsors for a further 4 years which is great for both of us. Andrew Bevan and Louise Richardson are pictured here from our recent game against Ollerton Town where they were Matchball sponsors too. They also had the responsibilty of picking our design the Programme cover for our last

Arts Review & what’s going on - MAY 2019 •

Terence Bennett Three cheers for the Crucible and for its production of Standing at the Sky’s Edge, the musical about the Park Hill Flats, following three generations who lived there, charting changing times and cultures, with plenty of wonderful music and Sheffield humour. Richardhe-can-do-no-wrong-Hawley has written the music for this poignant and fulfilling work. The theatre was packed, the atmosphere was great, and the show was given a standing ovation at the end. Artist returns after 50 years! TERENCE BENNET: A RETROSPECTIVE exhibition of paintings and drawings by this Doncaster artist. In September 1967 Terence Bennett became the first artist to hold a one-person exhibition at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Now, over 50 years later, as the Museum prepares to move to its new site at the top of Chequer Road, he is to become the last artist to have a one- person display at the gallery. The large-scale exhibition brings together paintings and drawings produced over a 60 year period, from student works created at Doncaster School of Art in the 1950s, to a series of glowing watercolours fresh off the easel. Terence was born in Doncaster in 1935, the son of a painter and decorator. He knew from an early age that he wanted to paint, and in 1951, at the age of 15, he enrolled at the Doncaster School of Arts

12

and Crafts, where he was taught by T.A Anderson, Eric Platt and Jack Camm. After completing his National Service he taught art at Doncaster High School, while continuing to paint and exhibit locally. As his work developed he became known for his Yorkshire scenes, including images of the mining landscape and costal places such as Spurn Point. In 1973 Terence was awarded the Yorkshire Television Fine Art Fellowship, and over that year produced around 70 works, all depicting the Yorkshire region, some of those paintings are now in the collection of the Bank of England. Throughout his life Terrence has continued to paint, and he has been recognised by inclusion in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London for a number of years, as well as holding many one- person exhibitions in London and across the country. Terence Bennett has been described a ‘a painter of place, someone who identifies with the place he is trying to capture’ and it is this that makes for such a compelling and moving exhibition. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: through May Deli Artists including Neil McGregor, Penny Cawley and Maureen Fisher present FACES a group show of portraiture www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 17 June SYLVIE FRANQUET who reworks found tapestries combining classical imagery and a punk aesthetic. ROMILLY SAUMARES SMITH another artist who reworks old discarded materials. This is such a poor description for an exhibition by an incredible artist, which is simply fascinating, and I highly recommend a visit. Romilly has made some really intriguing and beautiful tiny and detailed sculptural works in precious metals, I simply don’t know how they have been made, tiny fairy fingers and clever technical ability must have created these pieces. Hello Everyone, Welcome to our fifth write up of the year. How time does fly. However, we are still longingly awaiting those lovely warm sunny days, I personally can’t wait to walk my dogs without being completely muffled up in coats and scarves. I would like to say a big thank you to the other people that have advertised our Mayflower Ball for us, Gazette Newspaper, Eastside Magazine and Don Gill. This has resulted in all of the tables being sold which is a fantastic result. Everyone is so excited about this event and can’t wait for an amazing evening. We unfortunately had to cancel our Table Top sale in the Scout Head Quarters in Tickhill, through lack of interest in table bookings. However, on Sunday the 7th April our Table Top sale at the Sanctuary had an incredible morning and raised more money than they had previously done. This event takes place at the Sanctuary on the 1st Sunday in the month, so please go along and support them. We are holding our usual Sponsored dog walk in Bawtry Wood which is down Martin Lane in Bawtry and starts at 11.00 am. This is an annual event and it is so lovely to see lots of dogs that have been rehomed looking healthy, fit and happy with their new owners. This is one of my favourite events and we just

hope the weather is kind to us. There will also be home-made cakes, coffee and tea available. We have a long term dog in our Sanctuary and we desperately looking for that forever home for him. His name is Gouldie, he is 4 years old and quite an energetic boy. He has been with us 2 years so desperately needs to be in a forever home. He enjoys lots of attention and loves long walks with his carers. Gouldie would be more suited to a home without children also other dogs and cats, he initially had a problem making friends with other dogs, however his carers have been working with him and he is getting much more sociable. He is a very clean boy and also well mannered. Are you taking on a Commercial Lease? If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial property tenant it is vital to understand what you are taking on. Signing up to a commercial lease is very different from renting residential property, with a range of responsibilities that can come as a big surprise if you’re not prepared. Here are some questions that every prospective commercial tenant should ask before agreeing to any tenancy: 1. What am I actually leasing? Is it an ‘eggshell’ lease/whole of property/surrounding land? This is relevant to repair obligations too. 2. What have I agreed to ‘keep in repair’? In a lease, ‘keep in repair’ actually means ‘put and keep in repair’ - you could be asked to carry out works to rectify disrepair that existed even before your lease. The phrase ‘keep the property in good repair and condition’ is even more onerous - be aware of the wording. 3. Can I terminate the lease early? Break clauses can give flexibility, but take note of any conditions limiting your ability to use this. 4. Do I have security of tenure? You may have the right to renew your lease at the end of your fixed term – this can depend on the wording in

your lease and the circumstances of your occupation. A legal adviser can assist you with assessing what your position is. 5. Can I transfer the lease or sublet? Many commercial landlords allow tenants to transfer/ sublet their lease, but only with their consent and subject to certain strict conditions. This could involve you being a guarantor, and paying the landlord’s legal costs when you look to deal with your lease in this way. 6. What other payments must I make? Insurance, service charge, VAT? Do you have to pay the landlord back for the buildings insurance premium? Is the landlord charging you for any services supplied, for example for the repair of any common parts? What amount/percentage must you pay? Can the landlord incur any expenses or are there restrictions? 7. Is the rent fixed for the whole of the term? Can the landlord review the rent? If so, when and on what basis? What happens if there is a disagreement? All of this should be set out in the lease itself. Make sure you know how and when rent review kicks in, so there are no nasty surprises later down the line.

COMMUNITY

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The group’s meeting took place on Tuesday 2 April 2019. This would normally have been the Annual General Meeting, but, due to holiday commitments this has been put back until next month, when it will take place on 7 May 2019. Members were informed about an initiative (Miles in May) by Barnsley Premier Leisure, who run all three Bassetlaw leisure centres, and supported by Bassetlaw District Council and Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS. This aims to encourage local people and organisations to commit to doing 26 miles, or as much as they can, by doing more exercise than they would normally. This can take the form of walking, running, swimming, dancing, seated or standing exercise, or even a mixture. A Pulse app can be downloaded at www.betterinbassetlaw.co.uk. For more information and to register for this challenge contact BPL on 01777 70-6500. Dates of outings were given – Wentworth Garden Centre, 22 May, £10, depart Harworth 10 am; Liverpool, 19 June, £10, depart Harworth 9.30 am; Scarborough, 7 August, £10 depart Harworth 9 am. A £5 non returnable deposit is required. A discussion was had about littering and members were reminded that the most appropriate way to deal with this is to ring 01909 533533 and ask for Environmental Services. You may be asked for a post code. It would also be

22

helpful if you have photographic evidence. A Town Councillor said that they were pushing hard for improvements to Scrooby Road, and these were considered a priority. Funding has been obtained for an accommodation project on the old North Border School site, but as yet nothing for the much-needed Community Hub building on this site. The council is looking into land for new shops, and a possible adventure play area for youngsters, but this could be a few years down the line, and investment will be needed. Jones Homes have agreed to remove the second bund and level the ground. This will then be lawned, and will have a paved pathway through to Simpson Park, providing a key access link to the town centre, along with the new civic square, for the hundreds of homes which are being built. It is all about the bigger picture, and will start to make sense as this takes shape. Sheffield City Region are paying us to develop a Master Plan, bringing all the major developments together. Funding has been obtained for extra/new litter bins, and also for some local improvements, including plants and finger posts. Members were informed that the forthcoming elections on 2 May are purely for parish and district councils, and these will not affect Brexit issues. County Councillor Sheila Place said she had received complaints about the new crossing outside the C of E school, because parked

cars are making it difficult to see people waiting to cross. Scrooby Road is being given high priority, and this will include another look at the crossing. Sheila had been helping youngsters at Serlby Park primary site, with the planting of trees, shrubs etc, creating a lovely outdoor shaded area. County Council were aware of the theft of gulley covers on Sandrock Road, Amanda Road and Rutland Crescent, and will be dealt with as a matter of urgency. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 7 May, starting at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Centre, and this will be the Annual General Meeting. All are welcome to attend.

IN THE GARDEN

Scaling the Walls What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena

24

Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upsidedown terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers. Happy gardening!

COMMUNITY Club Sponsor

A BIG SHOUT out to our

AMAZING

COMMUNITY here in

Bircotes and Harworth! T

In last month’s article we mentioned that we would be holding our 3rd Annual Club Championships – well what an event that was! This is a Club-only event and is a great opportunity for all our swimmers, including the under-9s, to compete in a friendly atmosphere. The under-9s swam in 25m and 50m races and the 9s-and-overs swam in 50m and 100m races. Their times in each event were converted to FINA points which are used to ascertain the overall top prizes. The winners of the age categories and the Coaches special awards have not yet been announced – these are kept under close wraps until our Presentation Evening in early May where we celebrate all of our swimmers’ successes over the previous year, along with a generous helping of food, drinks, speeches, and music. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those volunteers who stepped in to help us run the Championships, a big “Thank you” to the Coaching team for their continual support of the swimmers week in and week out, and of course a “Thank you” to our Sponsors. The following weekend we took 24 of our swimmers to Mansfield Swimming Club’s Acorns meet. This was the first time we have attended this meet, and in an unfamiliar set-up, we still managed to perform fantastically well, taking part in 109 events, and bringing back 4 medals (well done to Emily, Jake and Leon) and 69 personal bests – some of which were obtained as an improvement on swimming times from an event only 5 weeks previously. Next on our swimming calendar is the Rotherham Metro meet at Ponds Forge where we will be taking our swimmers to participate in 2 days of racing. It’s a long weekend (and for anybody who has spectated at swimming events, they will know how hot it can get at the side of a competition pool!), but it is well worth it and we will report back on the outcomes of that in next month’s article. In the meantime, if anybody would like to join our Club, the Club Secretary (Jo Chestnutt) can be contacted on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com, or if any local businesses would like to sponsor, or provide prizes for our Presentation Evening, we would be extremely grateful.

Following a recent incident where several things were stolen, including a ladies bike from outside of Aldi, a fundraiser was created to raise money for Pat Burrell to replace her stolen bike. As a result of this, a whopping £815 was raised! We were all so shocked at the response and therefore Pat Burrell would like to say a huge Thank you to everybody who donated or offered support in any way for the time she was without her bike to help her get to work and back, and get about the village. We have such a great community spirit here and it's so lovely to see everyone come together at times like these.

WALKING NETBALL

T Do you remember playing Netball at school? Unlike school sessions running and

jumping are definitely not allowed! Would you like to meet new people and have some fun? We are welcoming new members all the time so come and join us. Every Monday 1-2.30pm at The Pavilion, Scrooby Rd, Bircotes Please contact Judith on 07539 493864 for further details.

LEGAL MATTERS

Change to Divorce Law Changes to Divorce law will be made as soon as parliamentary time becomes available according to the justice secretary. This will be the biggest change in divorce law in 50 years. At the moment one party has to allege unreasonable behaviour or adultery if they have not been separated for two or five years. The new legislation would mean only having to assert that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without having to attribute blame or wait for at least two years. There will be a six-month period for reflection before the Decree Absolute is granted. The aim of the overhaul is to reduce conflict

between divorcing spouses. David Gauke who announced the changes said “While we will always uphold the institution of marriage, it cannot be right that our outdated law creates or increases conflict between divorcing couples. So, I have listened to calls for reform and firmly believe now is the right time to end this unnecessary blame game for good”

These changes in divorce law have taken many years to be approved and will be welcomed by divorcing couples and family lawyers once introduced. It is to be hoped that parliamentary time is made available in the near future and the long-awaited changes are finally implemented

It will also be possible in the future for there to be a joint application for a divorce. The changes are long overdue and will hopefully reduce conflict and Head of Family Law, hostility which can be damaging Taylor Bracewell for divorcing spouses and their 01302 341414, children. ANY QUERIES: CONTACT ME OR OTHER COUNCILLORS, WE WILL, AS ALWAYS, TRY TO HELP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY THE INCINERATOR… WATCHING AND WAITING ON YOUR BEHALF Last year, the planning application for an incinerator brought this community together to protest against it – individuals, groups, the business fraternity and councillors – and my thanks go to you all, you were brilliant! Since then, some of us have kept in touch with Notts. County Planning Dept. for regular updates, and this includes Richard Chambers, Chair of the Action Against the Incinerator Group, who also keeps in touch with myself. Richard and I feel it is important you are kept aware of the current situation, which is: Notts. County Planning have asked the company, N U Energy, for further information pertaining to their application, which is yet

to be received. Notts. County have suspended the application/ planning process until that information is provided. The company have asked for an extension in time, in order to gather the information that date is now 31st July. This means that we cannot assume the incinerator application won’t go ahead between now and 31st July; if it does, then be prepared, your help will again be needed, folks.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2019 So come on, what about you ramblers, swimmers, cyclists, joggers? – I bet you could do this, no problem! UPDATE Farewell to Steve Ashworth and John Durdy, who have left the Town Council; we thank them for all their contributions over the past years. For those who are interested, being a Town Councillor can be very rewarding, especially when we try to achieve something and finally succeed. It can also be frustrating at times, because councils have to operate within strict protocols and procedures, and this can mean delays...a minor success can at times feel like winning a major battle! Councillors also have to abide by the Code of Conduct – a framework of ethics and standards of behaviour which at times means we just have to take a deep breath and ignore false and sometimes defamatory statements made by some individuals. For those cynics who choose to believe the worst about people, let me emphasise that Town Councillors don’t get paid - they work voluntarily, and not for any financial or material gain. Got it? One other point to make is that the Town Council is strictly non-political. GOOD NEWS FOR THE COMMUNITY: Funding for Events. The Town Council is organising a number of

community events to be held at the Town Hall in the coming months; I understand a Summer Beach Activity is planned for smaller children, along with a Roller Disco for older children, and not forgetting a Christmas pantomime… final details will be made available later. Our thanks go to North Notts. B.I.D. for the funding, in response to a bid from Karen Tarburton, our Community Development Worker… PLUS VISIT THE COAL MINING EXHIBITION IN THE TOWN HALL, 2nd to 31st May. It will be available throughout May at the following times: Mon Tues. Wed. Thur. Fri. Sat25th

9am - 12pm 9am - 4pm 10.30am – 4pm 9am- 12.30pm 10am - 3pm 9am - 1pm

No doubt it will bring back a lot of memories for many residents; it should also be interesting for younger people – quite an eye-opener to see the environment in which their older male relatives worked… AND On Saturday 1st June, 7.30pm, a FASHION SHOW, at the Town Hall, for those who like quality clothes at a bargain price. HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES RESIDENTS AND THE BASSETLAW ACHIEVERS AWARDS These annual awards go to people across Bassetlaw who have dedicated their lives - to

helping their communities, or working tirelessly for charities, for personal achievements, and sporting successes. Those whose names I recognise from Harworth and Bircotes, and who were recently recognised for their work are: Les Batty, in recognition of his work at Harworth Church and within the community, Jonathan Wilson, in recognition of his work with the Harworth F.C. Football Teams, Amelia Durdy, in recognition of fundraising work for Bassetlaw Food Bank, and Ann Wilson, in recognition for her work as a Church Warden at All Saints Church, Harworth Congratulations to our successful winners; apologies if I have missed anyone. Remember (for the next time round) anyone can nominate a person who they think is deserving of the award. CASHLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM FOR PARKING Residents and visitors to Bassetlaw have been able to use cashless parking in Council run car parks in Worksop and Retford from the beginning of April. The introduction of a new system, RingGo, is a quick, easy-to-use mobile phone service that allows users to pay for parking by credit or debit card, rather than with cash at a machine, and you can easily top up your parking from a distance, if you need to stay longer. The facility can be accessed

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2019 by contacting RingGo on a smartphone app, calling SMS or online and pay for your parking by phone, and unlike normal parking sessions, you can simply top up your stay remotely. If you choose to pay via RingGo, there will be no need to display a ticket in your vehicle, as Civil Enforcement Officers will check which vehicles have paid for parking using special handheld devices. A SPECIAL REQUEST TO DOG OWNERS: PLEASE RESPECT CONSECRATED GROUND The Town Council has received a number of complaints about dog walkers using the New Cemetery. The Council allows bereaved relatives to take their pet if on a lead into both cemeteries, and this works well for all concerned. However, it seems some people bring their dogs (sometimes in the car) purely to let the dogs have a run around the New Cemetery – sorry, it is not a dog exercising area. Please, respect the cemetery and those who visit it. TO MAKE YOU SMILE: A NEW WORD IN MY VOCABULARY I love words, they really interest me, so when I was searching for the answer to a crossword clue “a process that birds engage in” I came up with NIDIFICATION – a word I have never come across before – which means ‘nest building` in the ornithological world. Whilst researching ‘nidification` my attention

32

was drawn to information on Bird’s Nest Soup. I learned that edible bird’s nests harvested for human consumption are those that are built by some members of the Swift family and, apparently, the nests contain solidified saliva…mmm, lovely. Edible bird’s nests have been prized in Chinese culture for more than four hundred years - due to their rarity, high nutritional value, and flavour; when dissolved in water this unique dish has, I am told, a gelatinous texture. I think I will stick to the stuff that comes in a tin! Comment: Over the last year it has become obvious to everyone that the Town Council has a big agenda, as we strive to secure longerterm, larger projects for the benefit of you and future generations; at the same time, it’s important we all remember that the little, everyday things also matter, and we welcome your ideas on how to make more improvements. It’s also important you tell us if there is a problem, no matter how small…true, some can only be dealt with by District or County Councils, but we will do our best to help you. Remember, if you don’t tell us, we can’t respond – just ask!

Dear Friends,

It’s time to talk. I have heard this so many times in all spheres of life. Recently, it is the government talking with the opposition in order to have a compromise over BREXIT. Talking over issues is not new in Christendom. Jesus encouraged his disciples to talk to God by introducing them to the Lord’s Prayer. This has become one of the most popular prayers of all times. But I wonder if we can think of some of the things we need to talk about. After Jesus resurrected on Easter Day, the story is told of a couple who were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. On the road, they shared their frustrations of the Jesus whom they hoped was the Messiah but had been killed. Luke 24: 15 – 24 state: As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

“What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third

36

It’s Time to Talk

day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” The above conversation between the couple and the stranger depicts the couple’s disappointments and doubts. It is a typical conversation that occurs in our normal lives. As we read further in the chapter, we will realise that the stranger explained the scriptures to them. This helped them in their understanding. It was when the couple had invited Jesus for supper, and he had broken bread that they realised who he was. Upon reflection I realised that sharing our stories with one another and with God can make a great difference in our lives. For example, many people are experiencing mental and emotional stress because they cannot find the space and time to share. Some people even feel very lonely to the extend that they are considering ending their lives. However, there in hope in talking to someone or an agency. Secondly, I wonder if it’s time for us to be like Jesus by being ready to walk alongside people and listening to them. They want to share their disappointments and doubts but most often, there’s no one to listen. Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, did not interrupt when the couple shared their feelings and disappointments. He did not judge them but just listened. It was after their sharing that he decided to help them with the scriptures. I wonder whether we have the time and space to help people pour out their hearts and feel safe in our presence. I also wonder if they can trust us at all. The couple trusted this stranger on the road to Emmaus. No wonder they were

prepared to listen to this stranger who had a solution in his sleeves.

This month, I wonder if I can suggest to any one struggling to be bold and talk about their disappointments, fears and struggles. You can find help in the church around you or from a professional agency. Secondly, I wonder if as a good neighbour you can free up a few minutes or hours a week to sit by someone who feels lonely or whom you know is struggling. You will be a saviour to that person and that’s what Jesus is asking us to do. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam
