“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise” ― Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

The year is racing by, Halloween and Bonfire Night are upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner. Once again, we have lots of activities and events being promoted on these pages – we are lucky to live in such active communities. By the time you receive this issue the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early magazine delivery—don’t forget to change your clocks early on Sunday 28th October. Are you getting organised yet? Last month I urged you to consider anything you wanted to get done or achieve before Christmas and to get yourself booked in with the many businesses offering their services within these pages. For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! The December issues will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th November. This will be of course the Christmas issue, and it is always a jam-packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you get your items to me in good time if you have something you would like included. Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine.

Best wishes,

You know, things such as whether Rugby Union is better than Rugby League, or whether Manchester United was ever the same after the departure of its Number 7. +DUZRUWK %LUFRWHV Tenants & Residents Association

The monthly meeting of the *URXS WRRN SODFH RQ 7XHVGD\ 2 October. Present were County Councillor Sheila Place and District Councillor Dave Challinor. Issues discussed by the two Councillors were the proposed Unitary authority which would see district councils disappear, and merge with other County Councils. They explained WKH HÎ? HFWV LW FRXOG KDYH RQ XV being geographically remote from County Hall. A similar proposal in Devon and Cornwall had proved to be disastrous. It would be a costly exercise, and when it is realised that it is unwieldy and cannot work HÎ? HFWLYHO\ IXUWKHU H[SHQVH would be incurred to put it back to where it had been, and where it works very well. There is an on-line questionnaire where members of the public can make their feelings known at http://online.ors.org.uk/ questionnaire/179097. The other issue discussed was the proposed Waste to Energy Incinerator. The result of the planning decision will not be known until the new year, but there has been a massive response with an overwhelming number of objections to the proposal, and many of these are from local businesses who feel very strongly and who have said they will move their existing businesses out of the area if this is given approval. Town Council has submitted a very strong objection. Funding of ÂŁ450,000 worth of investment has been received from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the Pilgrim Roots Project, for the 2020 400th anniversary RI WKH 0D\Čľ RZHU UHDFKLQJ America. Details can be found on Bassetlaw Council website.

Funding had been given to the Harworth Colliery Football Club by District Councillors, John Mann, and a local businessman who wished to remain anonymous. This will provide team strips, Astroturf, LED lighting, a purpose-built sports building for rehabilitation, corporate facilities, seating, and refurbishment of the old pavilion near to Asda for the use of junior teams.

The group were pleased to report that their recent 0DFPLOODQ &RÎ? HH PRUQLQJ KDG raised in excess of ÂŁ500.

Dave thanked those who had attended his civic ceremony, conducted by our lovely new Vicar, Nicky Skipworth, and the ÂŁ117.35 raised on the day will go to the air ambulance.

The group’s next monthly meeting takes place on 6 November, also at Devonshire Road Community Centre, starting at 10.30am.

Sheila Place is looking for funding more zebra crossings on Bawtry Road, she and is also hoping to get some more speed signs. PC Jim Martin talked about the rumours regarding Avondale Nursing Home. Police, Town Council, and District Council were unaware of this, as it did not need change of use planning consent as it still comes under care home status. He stressed that there are no VH[ RÎ? HQGHUV SDHGRSKLOHV etc in the establishment. It is a halfway house for recovering addicts, to enable these people to reintegrate into society. Whether we like it or not it is here to stay. Any incidents should be reported either to the manager, or to the police, and these will be investigated and dealt with, in some cases removing them due to continuing bad behaviour. We had a drug problem long before these people took up residence. Some residents go out to work, and some are being encouraged to work on the Snipe Park Wood upgrade.

The group also wish to remind everyone that they hold a craft afternoon every Tuesday from 2 till 4pm at Devonshire Road Community Centre. If you don’t knit or crochet, you can simply enjoy a chat, a cuppa and a biscuit. All are welcome.

September and October saw the Club take part in swimming competitions at Bircotes, Retford, 6KHÉ? HOG 0DWORFN DQG Cambridge with many personal bests and medals achieved. The highlight of the month came in the form of the opportunity for our swimmers to try Open Water Swimming. 16 children and 4 parents (including the Club’s Head Coach and Chairperson) took part, with the youngest swimmer being only 8 years of age. The event WRRN SODFH DW +DWČ´ HOG 2XWGRRU Activity Centre and was hosted by an Open water swimming company, SwimyourSwim , who provided specialist coaches for the event. Due to the warm summer we had the water temperature was still pleasant with wetsuits on. Everyone involved had a fantastic time and many can’t wait till next year when the water once again warms up enough for us to swim. Open Water swimming is a fantastic sport

or recreational activity but we recommend that anyone wanting to pursue this activity does so at an approved regulated facility that has been granted permission for swimming. If you are interested in Open Water swimming please visit SwimyourSwim website for further information.

We are pleased to report that the Club’s Captain, Dominic *LOORZ DJH SLFWXUHG is now ranked number one in Nottinghamshire in the 200 metre Individual Medley event. As a Minister, I do encourage people to remember their loss in whatever form so that they can learn from their lives and apply the good examples and lessons in life. For instance, I am leading a memorial service at Harworth Methodist Church on Sunday 18th November at 3.00 p.m. However, I also realise that sometimes we need to learn the not-so-good aspect of peoples’ lives so that we do not repeat their mistakes. Talking of the not-so-good bits of the lives of people who have passed on is something most cultures do not encourage. For example, my older brother passed on about three months ago. He was about twenty-two months older than me and we loved each other to bits. However, I was the only family member he was able to connect with in the last thirteen years of his life. He cut RÎ? Leaf matter: Leaves matter Oh, those autumn leaves. So pretty on the trees but they can be rather inconvenient in the garden. If they drift too deep on the lawn the grass underneath will die so there’s nothing to do but rake them up. However, these fallen leaves are a little autumn gift from nature and with them you can create leaf mould. Leaf mould is free garden nourishment, and it’s like feeding your VRLO ZLWK WKH ¿ QHVW ¿ OOHW VWHDN /HDI PRXOG is what’s left when the dead, fallen leaves from deciduous trees and shrubs are heaped up and allowed to rot down. As they slowly decompose, only the toughest bits remain, eventually forming crumbly, dark brown crumbs, a bit like chocolate sprinkles. Leaf mould is easy to make, a delight to handle, and you can’t possibly overfeed your soil with it. Micro-organisms are the driving factor, SHUIRUPLQJ DQ DOFKHP\ WKDW JLYHV WKH ¿ QLVKHG SURGXFW DQ DOPRVW PDJLFDO TXDOLW\ ,WV ¿ EURXV nature retains moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a great mulch for trilliums or wood anemones, whose natural habitat is woodland. I adhere to a policy of only collecting leaves where necessary. Where they have fallen and are not obscuring the grass I leave them for the earthworms to pull into their burrows (I wrote last month about how I think of earthworms as my friends and so do nothing to discourage them).

Simply sweeping leaves off paths and decking or patios will keep the garden looking cared for. I also remove any that have drifted around my herb garden because herbs like to be able to breathe. These tasks alone give me enough leaves to create plenty of lovely leaf mould. If you have enough room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost. It’s quite simple to construct a leaf cage using chicken wire and posts. You can even bag your leaves in punctured black bin bags and put them in an out-of-the-way corner. The puncturing is necessary to allow air to circulate. A leaf heap made this autumn will be ready by next autumn. While you’re tidying up the leaves it can be tempting to cut down faded perennials. But if \RX OHDYH WKHP LQ D PRQWK RU VR \RX ZLOO ¿ QG they have turned into wonderful sculptural winter skeletons which look incredibly beautiful in the frosts. Nottingham County Council is concerned that the current uncompleted spoil heap has now formed a crater on one side into which water gathers; if not addressed, the water will eventually make its way towards the base and de-stabilise the tip.
