Welcome to

the NOVEMBER 2014 edition

“Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star.” W. Clement Stone Early in October I spent a couple of days at a Publishers Conference, meeting with many other publishers of magazines just like this one. People travelled to the Heart of England conference centre from up and down the country, one even arriving from Australia! It is always lovely to spend time with fellow publishers and we all learn from one another and some good friendships have been formed. Lots of planning for 2015 took place, and yes I will be aiming for the moon during my 10th anniversary year! I was honoured to be shortlisted for 3 awards at the evening awards ceremony, and I came home with a bottle of bubbly for ‘meeting deadlines’! We have not one but 2 prize giveaways this month. We have the return of the ‘Win a family ticket to Peter Pan Pantomime’ and also 10 pairs of tickets to the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. The Racecourse Pantomime is looking like it is going to be fabulous entertainment and I heard great reports of the Festive Gift Fair from those who went last year, in fact I am planning a trip myself this year. You may be surprised how few people enter the giveaways we run, so you have every chance of winning prizes if you regularly enter. Look out for the details of how to enter inside the magazine. The December issues will be delivered to you late November. I can’t believe that we are back to producing Christmas issues already! If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th November. December magazines are always the busiest of the year so do get your contributions to me on time.

Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

your email address and we will add you to the list. Our aim is for all patients to have as much information as possible. Seven patients gave us their mobile ‘phone numbers to pass to the practice and have their record updated. All patients are asked to let reception have up to date mobile numbers so that reminders re appointments can be sent. We are still trying to reduce the number of Did Not Attend Appointments to make it easier for patients in need to see a practitioner.

(Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) The Patient Participation Group

held a combined a Health Information Day and a MacMillan Coffee Morning on Friday September 26th 2014 from 10 -12 at The Harworth Town Hall. We send our thanks to the following organisations and groups for their support:• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Bircotes Leisure Centre South Yorkshire Centre for Inclusive Living Healthwatch Johnson and Johnson Diabetes Nurse Specialist Doncaster Public Health team Doncaster Memory Service ACCORD Mental health support group Harworth and Bircotes Smiley Milers walking group Age UK Carers Service Alcohol Services Test your Health Nurses Tickhill Surgery Practice Nurses

Without them the event could not have taken place. In the two hours about 65 patients attended, of these 11 saw The NHS Test Your Health Nurse and 17 saw Our Practices Nurses Claire and Heather. More than 80 customers attended the coffee morning. With a resulting £146 being raised for Macmillan Cancer Care. We were given 21 comments and feedback on the Medical Practice of which 3 negative comments had already been addressed by the medical practice. Suggestions for improvement were welcomed and disappointments were noted along with the praise and thanks which numbered 18. All comments have been passed back to the practice in an anonymous format. All responses will be published by the PPG. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and ideas. We also signed up 6 new members to our wider group. Using email these members along with all other members of the wider group will receive minutes of committee meetings, news and information as it becomes available and will be passed questionnaires as they become available. We thank them for joining and invite all other interested parties to send us an email with your name as well as 6

August saw a slight improvement but most patients will agree that 103 appointments booked but not attended at Tickhill in August a waste of 22.85 hours plus 64 appointments booked but not attended at The Colliery Surgery or 11.81 hours is still totally unacceptable. Please help us to reduce these statistics and in so doing make it easier for everyone who needs an appointment to get one. News The Practice has signed up to the ‘I want Great Care Scheme’. Through this all patients will be given the chance to respond and comment, after every appointment, on the care and treatment they received. A summary of these comments will be produced every month by a third party agency and we hope to pass these back to you as they become available. All GPs go through an annual appraisal; the results of the last appraisal for the GPs in this Practice are as follows:91% of respondents got to speak to a GP 75% of respondents said it was easy to get through to the Surgery 91% of respondents find surgery staff helpful 45% of respondents usually get their preferred GP 61% of respondents said the nurses were good at involving patients in their care 58% of respondents waited 15m or less after their appointment time. November this year will see National Self Care Week with this in mind please ensure you have had your Annual Flu Vaccination which is available to all patients over 65 Years of age plus some younger patients who are carers or have certain illnesses. Please contact reception to check if you are eligible and to book an appointment. You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com Kate Ripley and Jan Hart T

Harworth Colliery Football Club November Update Hello and welcome to the Monthly update from the club and as ever it has been a busy one. The 1st team have had a really difficult Autumn after going on a winless run for seven games. The majority of these though against teams that will certainly finish in the top 6, so going into November we have a couple of Cup games we are hoping to do well in and also face a number of teams that are in and around where the club is at the minute. Congratulations to Lewis Francis who was named the clubs player of the month for September, a local lad who has really settled in this season with the 1st team after breaking through from the reserves last term so well done him and keep it going, please see list of fixtures below for November and hope you can support the club.

We still have tickets available for our Halloween DISCO on the 1st of November, again I must stress how important these nights are for us to be able to continue what we are doing at the club so looking for all players and Parents from the club and the Public at large to get behind it, tickets are just £3 and should be a great night. Forthcoming Fixtures for the 1st team for November are 1st at Home to Thorne in the League Cup, and the next and only League game in November is on the 15th at home to local rivals Bentley Colliery, really hope you can make it down and keep a look out for all the upto date news on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, plenty going on our Twitter account @HCIFC & on our Facebook page, keep turning up through the gates as it is hugely appreciated by everyone associated with the club. Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@hotmail.co.uk @jonycw

dŚĞ WĂǀŝůŝŽŶ ƉƌĞƐĞŶƚƐ on Saturday 1st November 2014 Staying with the 1st team and we are delighted to have Belle View Windows and Conservatories sponsoring the new Warm up T-shirts. Next month we will announce another sponsor coming into the club but will elaborate more next month, many thanks to Danny and all at Belle View. The reserves and Colts have had a mixed month which is to be expected and hope that both can find a settled squad as that is really causing the inconsistincies but we know we have the quality to compete in both leagues. A massive plus at the moment is how both of our Junior sides are doing, at the time of writing Dave Guys Under 13’s have an 100% record in the league and are scoring goals for fun, Alex Jessop, Jack Kingston and Bradley Guy just a selection that are finding goals easy to come by. It’s great to see how well they are doing after a difficult season last year so we have high hopes. The same can be said for Graham Ellis’s Under 14’s who if it wasn’t for conceding some last gasp equalisers would be top. They have at present lost just the one which was 3-2 to the title favourites so Graham and his lads will now be looking to put that behind and really push on. Both teams doing well is a reflection of how much hard work people are putting into training etc and both Dave and Graham have good people behind them so from me thank you, keep up this hard work and it will cointinue to prove dividends. 8

Here at the Sanctuary we are getting very excited as our new reception and kennels are coming along really well and will be all ready for Christmas. So when our bleak weather appears we will have somewhere for people to sit and chat about how they can give a rescue dog or cat a warm cosy home and future. Lots of people are giving up their time at the moment to help with fundraising. Friday the 31st of October is Halloween. Mayflower would like to invite you to their scariest fun day ever! Come along and take one of our dogs into the paddock, find doggy treats and all kinds of creepy crawlies. Bring along a pumpkin and take part in our carving competition. Belle Female JUNE 2013 3.5 Years No No Yes

Hello I’m Belle, I came to Mayflower as a puppy and I had extremely deformed front legs which have now been corrected. I am a wonderful, friendly Lurcher who only wants to please. I am looking for a new home because I wasn’t getting along with other dogs on a walk but I am responding very well to my carers training. I can get a little over the top with my willingness though and I will need firm leadership. I will need to be an only dog but I do behave extremely well in the home and I am very loving towards children. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

Name: Sex: Date into care: Age on arrival: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Lived with children:

Cleo Female 14 July 2014 3 Months ? Yes Yes

Cleo was taken into care with her sister because their previous owner hadn’t realised how much hard work two small kittens were. Kittens of this age can be very destructive and need careful handling and socialisation if they are to grow into sociable, loving young cats. Cleo is very loving and would happily be a lapcat given the chance. She loves to play with other cats so it would be nice if she could be rehomed with a friend Her sister has been rehomed but Cleo is still waiting for her new family to arrive. Please don’t make her wait too long.

Tickhill & District Lions This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 8th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive. We have a new firework supplier who has promised spectacular displays. The event is jointly being organised by the Tickhill and District Lions and Tickhill Cricket Club. Entrance is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets and, as ever all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Proceedings will begin at 5pm with the lighting of the Bonfire followed by two firework displays. There will also be a BBQ selling locally supplied sausages and beef burgers. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all-round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and with the Cricket Club bar open, the bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. Aside from the Bonfire the Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with lots of great prizes on offer including a cycle voucher for all those budding Tour de France enthusiasts. Ticket will be on sale throughout the village and on our stall at the Late Night Shopping event. The draw takes place on Tuesday 16th December. If you planning to attend the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 27th November look out for the Lions Christmas float. T

Garden View

Hedge Your Bets! Ok, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear 18

the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s costeffective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings. Happy winter gardening

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Environmental Health Prosecution Following a complaint and follow up investigation Environmental Health served a Fixed Penalty Notice on a local resident after they had been witnessed fly tipping garden waste in Snipe Park Wood, the offender admitted the offence and paid the £55 notice. Environmental Health will follow up complaints of fly tipping in the Harworth and Bircotes area and some case will deploy cameras to gather evidence for prosecution against individuals who continue to ruin our local environment. If anybody witnesses anybody fly tipping in the area please contact Bassetlaw Environmental Health Team at Bassetlaw District Council on 01909 533219. The Environmental health team also deal with complaints of Noise issues which includes barking dog noise complaints, and also work alongside the environmental protection agency in relation to garden bonfires and the legislation that covers this. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 it is an offence for people to dispose of their domestic waste in a way likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health.

Vehicle Crime We continue to attend incidents where it seems vehicles are still being left insecure we would strongly urge people to ensure that they lock their vehicles. Also please do not leave anything inside the vehicle even if it is not on show whether it be Sat Navs, small change etc 22

as this may entice thieves to try to break breaak in. Another important point we need to make is that Insurance companies tend not to pay out if you leave your vehicle insecure and it gets broken into or stolen, so please double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked.

also ensure that a good d heavy heavy duty d ty lock dut lockk and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We continue to offer free property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Prosecutions of Our advice remains the same in terms Note over the past in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant 2 months and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - OCTOBER 2014 HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Harworth and Bircotes Town Council have continued to make progress with the Neighbourhood Plan for our Town, and the document is now available to view on the Harworth and Bircotes Town Council’s Neighbourhood Plan website http:harworthandbircotesnp. weebly.com/.

the Colliery site … plans were displayed that clearly showed new houses, a main road, a school, other community facilities, and even a bus terminus. Two senior managers from Harworth Estates were present to help explain the site plan, which includes accommodation for older people preferably built just behind the Town Hall, along with a path giving easy access from their homes to the Health Centre, chemists, shops etc.

The Town Council displayed the contents of the Neighbourhood Plan document at the Family Fun Day on 20th September 2014 – these are summarised on the following pages. Lots of people attended the event and commented on the options for development. The Neighbourhood Plan will have a positive impact on this area over the next fifteen years; it is really important that you are involved in commenting on and supporting this document – remember, this will be the blueprint for your Town, and it is your children and grandchildren’s future we are planning for.

• Also on display was a plan for the future development of the building on the Tommy Simpson field that previously served as a changing room for football teams but is now no longer used. H&B Town Council is trying to get ownership and then get it restored and further developed for use by all sorts of community groups, not just sport groups. … perhaps some use could be made by teenagers, but volunteers and supervision would be required. And no, there are no plans to build a clinic or houses on the field.

Further Opportunities for Involvement:

Summary of other proposals for our community, which include:

We will be holding further events to allow you to come and view the options for development and make comments. The next is:-

• Town Centre Improvement scheme for shop frontages

• The week commencing 27th October, Monday to Friday at ‘Café 81’ on Scrooby Road. We hope to see you there!

• Improved Public Realm on Scrooby Road for pedestrians/ address car parking issues

Fun Day Event, 20th September

• Creating a Public Square as part of an expanded town centre

• Improve the Tommy Simpson field – for those who don’t know, this is behind the Game Cock • Improve pedestrian/cycle routes • Improvements to existing leisure and community facilities • Improve Snipe Park Wood • Droversdale Woodland: facilitate a woodland attractive to local residents • Public Transport Improvements • Safeguard the existing disused railway line • Create a play facility in the Common Lane area • Negotiate improvements to Drainage These proposals will take years to come into force; we are planning for the future and future generations certainly will feel the benefits. Thank you for all the positive comments and helpful suggestions about what you want to see in Harworth and Bircotes, and thanks to all who bought raffle tickets – you raised £365 for The Bluebell Hospice. I have to mention the five young men called the Teenybytes who played at the event. It was obvious these are talented youngsters, and I understand they are all studying for a music diploma – serious

Useful NUMBERS:

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED stuff, guys. It was also obvious that their public address system was not the best. I did promise that if I won the lottery I would buy them some new equipment, which I know is very expensive. Sorry lads, no joy so far, but I will keep trying. Apologies to the lady who left me a message about the bouncy castle sited near her back gate. I spent the day at the event and fortunately I didn’t see anything to cause any concern during the 4 hours it was in use, just happy children enjoying themselves; however, should there be future events I will bear her comments in mind.

September Visit to Development on Orgreave Colliery Site, Catcliffe I was asked by Harworth Estates to visit this 38 hectare site and what an eye-opener it proved to be. Part of it is a growing business park; Rolls Royce, Sheffield University and Sheffield City Region were some of the names I recognised. The rest of the site currently has three large house building companies, all fully engaged in building attractive new homes and roads … BUT also pedestrian walkways connecting the streets, cycle routes, green spaces, and there is even a lake that is part of a clever flood mitigation scheme for Catcliffe that, when full, empties into the river Rother. This innovative approach is what Harworth Estates intend for Harworth Colliery site. I have asked for photographs that demonstrate the variety of housing and userfriendly ideas, so that our residents have a better idea of what can be achieved.

Fly Tipping • Because of a complaint and follow up investigation, Environmental Health served a Fixed Penalty

Notice on a local resident after they had witnessed him fly tipping garden waste in Snipe Park Wood; he admitted the offence and paid the £55 notice. Environmental Health will act on complaints of fly tipping and in some cases will deploy cameras to gather evidence for prosecution against individuals who continue to ruin our local environment. • Who has no conscience and dumped a settee behind Options? Whoever did this, let me point out that disposing of unwanted household goods is your responsibility; neither Options, or the public purse, should have to pay for your rubbish removal. Try doing what the rest of us do – ring Bassetlaw Council and pay to have your stuff removed. • The man who keeps dumping plastic bags full of empty bottles under the tree on the corner of Devonshire/Cambridge Road – stop it, it’s not the bottle fairy who make them disappear; you are fly tipping and will be fined if you continue.

Traffic Management on Scrooby Road. True to his word, County Councillor Kevin Greaves and Sheila Place brought the senior Highways officer to look at our problems … I am waiting to hear what solutions he will suggest. • Sheila Place and another officer visited two weeks later to look at roads in need of repair; I asked that they have a close look at speeding and parking problems on Bawtry Road. • County has informed us that later this year they will introduce a 20 mph limit outside All Saints C of E school

Highways Notifications • Temporary Traffic Lights on Snape Lane, 27th October will be for one day only, to facilitate new water connections, and the road will be closed overnight from 7pm on 1st November. • Resurfacing of Mayfair Close and Saxon Way is planned from Monday 24th November to Friday 28th. • Sat. 22nd Nov./Sunday 23rd Serlby Road (leading from Styrrup to Blyth Road) will be closed overnight, as will Blyth Road from Brunel Close to the junction with Serlby Road. For the second time this year Highways failed to turn up to repair East and West Street on the arranged date, despite advertising those dates in local papers. No notification or communication was forthcoming, so I sent a terse email to the manager … after tracking down the specific person responsible for this bit of road work, I got an apology and explanation. It seems there are two elements to the scheme: a. First, resurfacing at the top of East/West Street – to be done by one contractor, then b. MicroAsphalting for the rest of the East/West Street – to be done by a different contractor. So what was the problem? – A failure to co-ordinate the two contractors to work on the specified dates! Highways tell me this work will now be done in November/December – they didn’t say which year!

Young People Thanks go to the young ladies who gather in the evenings at the vacant building on Bawtry Road. 25

community Chatting with them, I found them pleasant and positive, and I note there is no litter now left there.

Sound Bites from a Technophobe: • A few residents have said their computer speed has reduced since the introduction of cable; I have checked this out with experts, who say the two systems are entirely separate and one can’t influence the other. • One resident has been investigating the cost of telephone line charges, and has found via his computer a much cheaper option – worth investigating, folks. • Harworth Estates/B.D.C. are considering potential sites for a mast, which will be needed to replace the kit for wireless deployable CCTV currently attached to the soon-to-bedemolished towers. Hopefully a mast would also serve as a visible beacon when driving on the A1 – something that tells me I am nearly home. • I understand another possibility is an aerial fixed to the new police station. Q. How long have we been waiting for CCTV – is it only 6 years?

Idiots Corner • Who left a crack pipe and needles on the slide used by children playing on the Snipe Park play area? I ask that parents and local people please report any suspicious behaviour. • Who has been stealing the large rolls of toilet paper from the public toilets? Please contact me, I will readily buy you a pack for domestic use, if you are that hard up.

To Make You Smile Re: The Resin Models of Children leading up to the C of E School and the wag who asked what Council was going to do about providing them with warmer clothes for the winter? My response, sir, is that if you buy the wool I’ll get some coats knitted for them.

Open Door Auctions success Open Door Auctions, the local family-run property business specialising in residential sales, has announced the success of its latest auctions – and is encouraging would-be sellers to come along to its upcoming events. The firm hosts bi-monthly auctions in Retford and Gainsborough, and has sold more than 110 properties so far this year. Including 27 homes via two auctions in one week this October, achieving an average of £11,000 above the guide price. The success of Open Door shows that residential auctions are becoming a very popular way to sell property; in fact, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135% increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Recent trends have also shown that more and more vendors are taking “normal” houses to auction, not just homes in need of renovation as seen on the daytime TV show Homes Under the Hammer. This is largely due to protracted sales times: at the moment, the average length of time to sell a house is 13 weeks in Gainsborough, and 19 weeks in both Retford and Worksop. Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, comments: “Selling at auction can be a great way of making sure that you get the best price and avoid any last-minute snags. With property auctions becoming more and more popular, the increase in demand for homes often leads to prices being pushed up, which is great for vendors who can also protect themselves through setting a reserve price. You also have the benefit of knowing that once the hammer falls, the contract is legally binding and the buyer has to complete within the agreed timeframe, usually 28 days.” “Selling your home at auction is becoming a successful way to move up the property ladder, so we’re inviting anybody interested in auctions to come to our next events in Gainsborough on Thursday 27 November and Retford on Tuesday 2 December.”

Thank you!

On the open market, potential buyers are able to make an offer before their own home is on the market. This can lead to complicated chains and a protracted sales process. By focusing on proceedable cash buyers, completing surveys before an auction and requiring a 10% deposit on exchange, auctioneers are able to avoid these sorts of problems. So for vendors looking for a fresh approach for selling their home, and vendors who want a quick, legally-binding sale, selling a home at auction could be the solution. This, combined with the possibility of seeing the price driven up by enthusiastic purchasers bidding against each other, means that selling property at auction is, for many people, a positive way to go.
