Harworth Colliery Football Club February Update! Hello and welcome to the first Update of the season from us at Harworth Colliery, as ever the start of the season has been a manic one with new sides, new players, new coaches and new teams to come up against. I must start though by thanking the new and existing sponsors of the Club, we do try and mention them in this piece but without the support of our sponsors we simply wouldn’t exist let alone try and grow the club, Jones & Co, LIFTING Support Services, Farmhouse Choice, Crown Conservatories, Mech FS, Signify Signmakers have all again commited to support us for this season and beyone and from all at the club I would like to thank you all, it makes things even better that they are all local to the Village so know what we are about, we also have new sponsors into the club to which we are again very grateful to which I will touch on later. The First team at the time of writing have won their first 3 league games so Brendan and all the coaches are doing an excellent job. It’s not been an easy time with dropping down a league but they have worked hard to retain as many players as well as adding quality where possible as well as promoting the younger players such as Ben Temporal who won the Jones & Co August Player of the Month for his promising displays for reserves and development sides. Having someone who knows the club inside out like Bren is crucial to us to get back some of the identity we appeared to have lost during our promotion and stint in the Northern Counties. Wherever possible try and get up and follow the lads as your support could well be a determing factor in our chase for promotion again this year. A huge game and occasion coming up for us is Friday night 4th of October where we face local team Askern FC, it would be great to have a huge turn out on the so called Floodlit Friday. Our reserves are under way too managed by new Coaches Dan Kirk and George Talbot, played two winning one and losing one upto press. The Reserves plays a crucial role in the Football Club as it has done for a number of years so we wish them well. One thing the club has promoted for a number of years is Youth and the U21’s have started excellently winning two out of two and with a large part of the squad playing for the 1sts we have real high hopes for them this term after years of being the whipping lads among the big boys, the home games are Thursday nights so again if at a loose end have a gander at not just the future but very much the now. A new team for us this is season is the Development team that plays on a Sunday morning and continues with the
8
MUSC name as it was vital we kept that going after 40 years in the league we had to ensure it remained and we are delighted to be doing it with 16-19 year olds as we look to bridge the gap between youth and senior Football, managed by local lads in Shay Dunning, Graham Ellis and Shaun Temporal they are in good hands and yes we know there will be some difficult times which they have faced already but started with an excellent 1 all draw with Ordsall FC but its all part of their development and progression. The Ladies have also made a great start winning two in two, so all in all it’s been a great start for the club, but we are not governed or monitored by victories, although this is great its vital we continue
Our Football for all policy and continue to grow and invest in what we do, that’s why continued sponsors such as this publication is vital to us, thank you Paula, also new Sponsors such as One Site Laser, another local firm based on the Plumtree offering quality and bespoke laser engraving, we are humbled by your support as I know Paul Noble and all of the U13’s are with JRC Plumbing who have kindly sponsored their kit and pictured with the board that is proudly positioned around the ground, the kit looks great and the lads can’t thank you enough. All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Many thanks Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@ hotmail.co.uk @jonycw 07979958255

Arts Review & what’s going on - OCTOBER 2019 •
There have been some shows worth beating a path to this summer. At the YSP, which is always worth the trip even just for a good walk there is a wonderful show by the American sculptor David Smith. The Park has imported work, some of which I was not at all familiar with, which is lyrical and of the landscape. Smith was known for his hard edge and challenging steel and stainlesssteel sculpture, he moved Sculpture into abstraction and was very much working alongside the post-WW2 Abstract Expressionist movement in the USA. The curators have brought together work which fits with the Yorkshire landscape and is a complete knock-out. I can’t recommend it enough. You don’t have to be too canny to avoid the dreadful Hirst’s which abound on the north east lakeside. The catalogue describes them as a ‘powerful presence’, all they have going for their vast brightly painted scale is the Hirst shouting loudly ‘I can afford the foundry fees!’ Yorkshire Sculpture Park Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) see above. Until 3 November in the Longside Gallery is an exhibition about art and child development. After receiving high levels of interest and popularity, ‘WE ARE BESS’ photographic exhibition has been extended. The exhibition features 20 modern women, from household names to the local community, including Sue Perkins and The Right Reverend Libby Lane. The Parish of Harworth and Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley ALL SAINT’S CHURCH, HARWORTH
Dear Readers, What a celebration we had in our parish for the five fantastic events spread across four days all celebrating the life of our community, as part of the oneLIFE Bishops’ Mission 12-15 September. Absolute massive thanks to everyone who helped in any way to make these events a great success we couldn’t have done it without you. With special thanks extended to the Karen Tarburton and the Town Council and also Harworth Church of England Academy for helping to host the events. We began the events with a Charity Hymnathon held in church. £100 was raised for our nominated charity Avondale House. The cheque was presented to Matt of Avondale during our Lamplighter Community Pilgrimage. The Pilgrimage started either end of the town – we prayed, sang, chatted and shared memories under a cloudless sky. Special thanks to the teachers from All Saint Church of England Academy who joined us from school to the short act of thanksgiving at the Civic Square. Next up was the was the free fancy dress kids’ party on Saturday afternoon at the Town Hall. The response from the parish was massive, 70 children attended with their parents, carers – all free of charge. The children were entertained by the fabulous Mr Dan Children’s performer. We had face painting by Paul Martin and his daughter Isobel (they literally never stopped for the full three hours)! A fancy dress competition, loads of food with sausage rolls and brownies provided by Clarkes Butchers. It was definitely a huge success so much so we are thinking of doing this again! On Sunday we held our Back to Church Sunday All Age Harvest Thanksgiving. All food bank donations received have been taken to Bassetlaw Food Bank. Our last event was held at Harworth CofE Academy on Sunday evening a charismatic worship led by Archdeacon David. The school choir sang their hearts out and everyone was so moved at their singing.
T
Thursday morning worship - a great alternative to Sunday. Pre-school children and doggies always welcome, too. No need to come on a Sunday, too. And .... looking further ahead... 3 November - our Patronal Festival and Gift Day. 3 November at 3pm - Tree of Life annual remembrance service. For anyone who has been bereaved, no matter how and when. It doesn’t have to have been a funeral in church or even led by a priest. We will be taking a collection to install several benches in the churchyard. 9 November at 7pm - Double Treble concert in Church. Come and enjoy beautiful music sung by two very talented vocalists. A Charity event 50/50 split with Church and Royal British Legion. Further details on Fb page. Belonging and Believing Have you ever wanted to be Christened and/or Confirmed, join us at our Belonging and Believing learning about faith together sessions starting on Fridays 20th, 27th September, 11th, 18th October and 8th and 15th November, plus a party on the 29th November. This is for children (over 5 years of age) and adults. If going on to receive Holy Communion or be Confirmed adults and children will need to have been christened beforehand. To book a place or for more information please contact Gillian Wratten on 01302 742463, You are welcome though just to turn up! We gather for worship at 10am on Thursdays and Sundays. For up to date event information and advice on how to make a baptism or wedding booking, find us on Facebook at ‘All Saints Church, Harworth and Bircotes’ or search for us at Church of England web portal, www.achurchnearyou.com. Raff is a playful man who walks lovely on the lead but may get a little excited to get out and about to begin with. He is clean in his kennel but may need more house training in a home. Raff gets super excited to see you in the mornings, so much that he gets a little drooly! He knows some basic tricks such as; ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ and will need further training to keep this up.

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association At the Group’s meeting on 3 September 2019, members were pleased to welcome Emma Walker from the Aurora Wellness Centre. Emma talked about how Aurora can help cancersufferers and their families, from diagnosis and right through treatment and even afterwards. There are treatments available at the Aurora Centres to help ease the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and there is always someone available to listen to your worries, and others in similar circumstances to exchange thoughts and ideas. Anyone can call in to the centre in Worksop Town Centre, which is located in the old library building, and also on Scott Lane in Doncaster. There are also centres within Bassetlaw Hospital, Doncaster Royal Infirmary, as well as in Mexborough Hospital. Apparently, this area is a high-risk area for many cancers, such as breast, prostate, lung, bowel and cervical. There are screening programmes for some of these, but not all, but there is a push for more screening programmes to be brought in. Emma left a number of brochures for members, and also some more for us to put in place at the Thursday morning coffee shop at the Town Hall. Members were
20
urged to visit their GP at the first signs of anything abnormal as this gives the best chance of cure. Members thanked Emma for her frank and interesting talk. Other matters under discussion were the trip to Liverpool Christmas Market, and the annual Christmas lunch at Styrrup Hall. Plans are underway for our usual MacMillan Coffee Morning on Thursday 26 September in the Town Hall. The spate of recent break-ins was discussed, and members were urged to tell their friends and neighbours that it is vital that these break-ins are reported to the police. We were also made aware that the police had been busy patrolling for many weeks, but cannot be everywhere at once, and it would be counterproductive if they were to let everyone know of their activities in trying to catch the criminals involved. It is very obvious that they are local with local knowledge, as they are able to hide easily. It is important to remember that we have our own home-grown criminals and we have always suffered these types of crime, but social media has made us more aware. We should be careful of taking the law into our own hands and forming vigilante groups. Work with the police, and even if they do not immediately come out, once you report a crime it can be linked to others, and a picture of what and where it is happening will emerge. It is only by logging all crimes that a case can be made
for more police. Members are now knitting mufflers for dementia sufferers at both Doncaster and Bassetlaw hospitals, and patterns are available for anyone who would like to help. Come along to our Craft afternoons which take place every Tuesday afternoon from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Devonshire Road Community Centre, where you will receive a warm welcome, and refreshments are provided. It is still hoped to have someone from Avondale to come and talk to us at a future meeting. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 1 October, starting at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome to attend. OPEN BETWEEN

Dear Friends. This year particularly, I have become more aware of the gift of the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
I think it may have started with the beautiful early spring which followed a very mild winter. Cast your minds back to the blossom which seemed impossibly to better the blossom of Spring 2018 (the like of which I had never seen before.) I remember driving through our village where the cherry blossom lay so thickly on the ground that the tarmac was transformed into a pink petal carpet, patch after patch, as I drove past dozens of trees in a floral ‘snow storm.’ The gardens of Japan could not have matched our fragrant display. Then, of course, we experienced the early summer heatwave which was so lovely to start with but soon became something else entirely when it became too hot to travel, work and sleep comfortably and when the health of the elderly, young children and animals was threatened by the relentlessly mounting temperatures. It helped to bear the extreme heat knowing that it would end eventually with the onset of crisp mornings, cool nights and refreshing rain to refill reservoirs and water butts. It will not surprise you to know that I believe that the order and variety and refreshment of each season is a gift from God. You probably know the bible story of Noah and his Ark and the animals ‘that went in two by two?’ But perhaps you are not as aware of the ending of the story. God promises that ‘while earth remains there will always be a time for planting and a time for harvest. There will always be cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.’ (Genesis Chapter 8, verse 22) As our warm summer days change slowly and seamlessly into the colourful beauty of Autumn which will in turn give way to frosty mornings and the promise of snow. Let us thank God for the

T
gift of our seasons which make our lives more varied and richer.
I offer you a blessing written by my friend Ruth Burgess of the Iona Community: Walk with us God, through sharp frosty days and bright crunchy leaves into winter. Rest with us by warm firesides and tell us stories into the night. Take us outside and show us the stars and fill us with wonder. Bless us and our families, our friends and our neighbours with love and with courage. And never let us forget the stranger who needs to share our wealth, our shelter and our hope. AMEN Yours in Christ,

TO CONTACT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE DIAL 101 for Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 For a more detailed list of crimes and incidents, members of public can look on www. police.uk website which will enable members of public to filter down to street/area level you want to look at for detailed list of incidents/crimes in that particular street or area. The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. You can also search back over any month period over the previous 5 years.

POLICE WARN PUBLIC OVER RECENT ONLINE SCAMS :Criminals Targeting People with Universal Credit Scam Action Fraud has received 63 reports about a scam in which fraudsters target people with offers of “low cost” loans or “free” government grants. What the victims aren’t told is that the money they’ll receive is actually an advance payment for Universal Credit. The criminals use the personal information they’ve obtain under false pretences to make an application in the victim’s name. After the fraudsters have taken their “fee” from the advance payment, the victim is then left to pay back the total amount once their repayments begin. How you can protect yourself: • Never share your personal or financial information with someone you don’t know and trust, especially if it’s in response to an offer of “free money” or a “free grant”. • Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) staff will never approach you in the street or ask for your personal/financial details over social media. • If you have concerns about your benefits, you should visit www.gov. uk/contact-jobcentre-plus • If you suspect your identity may have been stolen, you can check your credit rating quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway, using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results. If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - OCTOBER 2019 KEEPING YOU AWARE OF DEVELOPMENTS IN OUR TOWN IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE; I WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED VIA THIS MAGAZINE, AND YOU CAN ACCESS THE COUNCIL WEBSITE AND THE COUNCIL FACEBOOK PAGE. ANY QUERIES: CONTACT ME OR OTHER COUNCILLORS, WE WILL, AS ALWAYS, TRY TO HELP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY News on the Incinerator Mike Hankin, Planning Applications Senior Practitioner at Notts. County Council, sent me the following information, the key points of which are: ‘Despite discussions with the developer, further information requested by Council will not be submitted; Council will press ahead and make a decision on the planning application using the current information they hold. It is a matter of record that Council considers that this information does not fully assess the full extent of the environmental impact of this proposed development. It is anticipated that the recommended decision for this planning application would be

The people of Harworth and Bircotes, the Business Community, the Town Council and Bassetlaw District Council, along with the M.P. John Mann and County Councillor Sheila Place, all had a part to play – not forgetting individuals like Richard Chambers and many others who worked so hard to get us to this point. Thank you.
A Community Transport Scheme. As promised, the Town Council has been searching for an alternative to the recently withdrawn CT4TC community bus, and are in discussion with Bassetlaw Action Centre to see if there is a way of providing a transport service, particularly for our older residents.
Community Anger, and Community Support The series of incidents causing damage to/theft from cars and then homes quite rightly caused anger in the entire community. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - OCTOBER 2019 you report every crime to the Police – it is this hard evidence that will influence the decision-makers to give us more Police officers. Thank you, everyone. C.C.T.V. We have a number of cameras in Harworth and Bircotes, which are monitored 24/7 from a control room in Worksop; staff working there can speak directly to Police. The cameras are positioned on the advice of the Community Safety Team and Police, and some can be moved to different locations, as required. The good news is that cameras around Snipe Park have been replaced so as to give greater visibility – the bad news is that we can’t put cameras on every street! Our Own Beach: the better weather over the Bank Holiday proved how popular this facility is. It was a delight to watch the small children playing in the sandpit; a grandfather watching the little ones at play said to me “wonderful idea, great to see”. The structure was funded by a grant from North Notts. BID (Business Improvement District) and the Tenants and Residents Association paid for the sand, so NO cost to local people; the joy of the scheme is that it now belongs to us, and therefore can be easily reassembled and made available whenever a spell of
decent summer weather is forecast. A Reminder about Events at the Town Hall. A Fashion Show at 7.30pm on October 5th is organised for those who like quality at bargain prices, and: A Craft Market on October 6th is a new venture; we are expecting around 15 stalls – come along and have a look. Improving the Public Domain. The work involving partial clearance of the 2nd Bund, laying a path to connect with Jones Homes, and grassing the area is now complete. If you enjoy Jane Austen, you might be interested in ‘Tea with Mr Darcy – A Food and Fiction Experience` at Rampton Village Hall, 1-to-3 pm, Sat. 19th Oct. To Make You Smile: Proud as a Peacock I recently had an appointment with my G.P. at their Finningley surgery, which is opposite the duck pond. Turning into the long drive past the building to reach the rear car park I noticed something grey moving near a parked car – I realised it was the back end of a large bird pecking at the ground. In the waiting room a gentleman from Harworth said that whilst walking from his car towards the surgery, he had encountered a peacock striding towards the car park. The receptionist explained there is a family of them living across the road and local people feed them; apparently, the birds like looking in wing mirrors, but occasionally pooh on the cars! When I returned to my car, I found the peacock standing motionless, displaying his glorious tail

feathers and staring at the passenger door of a shiny red car – he was admiring his own reflection! I decided the people of Finningley must be very tolerant - beautiful as they are, peacocks are very noisy birds with a strident, ear-piercing call; I’m more than happy to wake up to the song of a common garden blackbird!

COMMUNITY and Chairperson Mieke Foster).
After the long summer break the Club returned, raring to go, and ready for more training and more galas to attend. First up was the Sherwood Colliery Robin Hood meet held at Ponds Forge, to which we sent 21 swimmers, some of whom swam for the first time in a licensed gala. Together, they swam in 69 races and achieved a 67% personal best rate, which is a good achievement post-summerbreak. Two of our swimmers were awarded medals (well done to Harry King and Aimee AlyWeston), and one more of our swimmers achieved a County Qualifying Time (well done to Max Fisher). Over the coming months we have more galas to attend in the bid to improve our times and to obtain those County Qualifying Times before

the end of the year.
And finally, we were delighted to receive our SwimMark accreditation. SwimMark is SwimEngland’s recognised kitemark for the development of effective, ethical and sustainable Clubs. This involves a lot of hard work, especially for a small Club and is a great achievement... yet again. Many thanks to everyone on the Committee who worked so hard to deliver this.
Each year we appoint a Club captain and we are pleased to announce the Club Captain for this year is Abigail Foster, ably supported by Vice Captains Liam Willis, Holly Foster and Katie Wells. Thanks go to retirees Tyler Gibson who continues to support the Club and to Dominic Gillow who is now part of our coaching team.
Even though we are a small Club, we are continually making progress.... we gain results at every gala we attend, be that PBs or County Times, but more importantly in developing confidence, satisfaction and enjoyment of our swimmers. There are many smiling faces, and we try our utmost to uphold our motto: Swim, Enjoy, Achieve.
The Club also recently supported the fundraising activities and Open Day held at Bircotes Leisure Centre raising money for Weston Park charity (photograph shows Head Coach Ericka Willis
