The summer holidays do seem to have gone quickly, but then they always do. This year I have been lucky enough to visit Orlando, Florida for the first time. 13 of us made our way around all of the Disney Parks, Universal Studios and various other Florida attractions. I now need another holiday to recover! Lots of great memories have been made however.

VAL HUNT Do you know about JUST A CARD Campaign? This aims to encourage people to buy from Designer/Makers and Independent Galleries and your local Shops in your town or village, by reinforcing the message that all purchases, however small, even ‘just a card’ are so vital to the prosperity and survival of small businesses. The campaign came about when Artist & Designer Sarah Hamilton saw the quote “If everyone who’d complimented our beautiful gallery had bought ‘just a card’ we’d still be open” by store keepers who’d recently closed their gallery. This prompted a call to action! Designer/Makers and independent shops and galleries need a voice. People seldom realise the considerable costs involved in exhibiting at design shows or keeping a shop open. Stand fees, power, materials, wages etc need to be met before even a penny of profit can be realised. Running a shop is often a labour of love. Without dedication and passion, and crucially sales, it would be another boarded up eyesore. This is true for all the things I list on this page. Without your support and/ or the purchase of ‘just a card’ then there would be nothing to list here. www.justacard.org Now then, it’s that time of year when you need to be dusting off your masterworks and preparing them for exhibition in the Doncaster Open Exhibition 2018. Application forms are in all the local libraries and the Museum itself. Delivery dates for ‘judgement’ are 20 to 23 September and the show, which is hung ‘salon-style’. The show runs from 13 October to 9 December. Be a part of it! Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sunday Exhibition: Until 16th September ‘ENDANGERED AND EXTINCT: RECYCLED SCULPTURES’ by Val Hunt. Miners Pension Compensation We are successfully claiming compensation for former miners who transferred out of the Mineworkers Pension Scheme. Many miners were advised to transfer their British Coal Pension to a private pension scheme which paid considerably less! This was bad advice and many retired miners or their widows have lost out.
Example 1 - £110,000
Example 2 - £48,000
Mr D, a former miner from Barnsley, was made redundant in the late 1980s. After the pits closed he was encouraged by an agent of the Prudential to transfer his Mineworkers Pension Scheme to them. We were able to show that this was bad advice. The Prudential eventually accepted this and agreed settlement of £110,000.
Mr F, a former miner from Doncaster, was made redundant in the 1980’s. He was advised by an agent of Sun Life to transfer his Mineworkers Pension Scheme to them. He was promised he would get a much better return which wasn’t the case. We submitted a formal complaint; Sun Life agreed to award Mr F a lump sum of £48,333.34.

Hi Everyone, We hope you are all enjoying your summer break. I know how difficult it has been to try and keep your pets cool in the heat, it’s also been really hard walking your dogs, as the ideal time is closer to 9pm when the weather has cooled slightly, that’s if we are able to stay awake until then! Here are some special people to thank. Charlotte and Rob MacConnachie have taken part in a 3 Peak Challenge. Charlotte and her colleagues from Cannon Fire APG Group carried out a sponsored walk on the 11th August. They have raised sponsorship for 3 worthwhile Charities including Mayflower Sanctuary. So a very big thank you and we hope your legs were not too sore at the end of the Challenge. One of our regular supporters will be at the Austerfield Village Show on the 2nd Sept so I hope it is a good day and everyone has fun and supports all the Charities there. We will be holding a Ladies only night in our Reception at the Sanctuary in October (date to be confirmed) keep an eye on our Website. This will be glass of punch, coffee and cake. There will be interesting stalls and if you haven’t started your Christmas shopping maybe that’s a good place to start. Tickets will be £ 5 to include the above. Please support this event ladies, I think you will find it will be great fun. Please see our lovely special selection of cats this month. Penny is our cattery manager and she will be happy to chat to you about all the cats in her care.

Tilly Female 3 years July 2018 Possibly ? ?
Tilly came into care with her buddies Rupert and Tabby because their owner was being evicted and was unable to take them with him to the new house. As previous housecats they have found life difficult here and have struggled to settle but are getting there now. Tilly is proving to be a fussy little lady although she can be a little tentative at first. She is good with other cats, particularly Rupert. She has previously lived with a dog but it chased her constantly so she may be wary of any canine friends. A home with Rupert would be perfect but Tilly would be happy to be homed alone. All she wants is a family to call her own again and a warm lap to cuddle up on in the evening. Not much to ask for eh ???
Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:
Rupert Male 2 Years July 2018 Possibly Some Older
Rupert came into care with his buddies Tilly and Tabby because their owner was being evicted and was unable to take them with him to the new house. As previous housecats they have found life difficult here and have struggled to settle. Rupert is quite a timid little chap and as such he may like to remain as a housecat in his new home. He gets easily spooked by loud/sudden noises. He is very shy at first meeting but once he gets to know you, he can be quite fussy with a purr like a tractor. All he needs is a little time and patience for his true personality to come shining through. The wait will be worth it. He is extremely close to his buddies so a home with one of them would be preferred. He has previously lived with a dog but it chased him constantly so he may be wary of any canine friends.

$ KRVW RI JROGHQ 'DÎ? RGLOV Garden centres, nurseries and catalogues are full of daffodil bulbs now. I have to exercise supreme self-restraint every time I wander in! I think I get asked more questions about daffodils than any other plant, apart from roses. I think it’s because they are ubiquitous in the spring and so we assume they are easy to grow. They are...and they aren’t, so I’ll answer the most common questions I get asked here. I think the question I get most is ’How do I get P\ GDIIRGLOV WR Ă€ RZHU PRUH WKDQ RQH \HDU"Âś It’s a good question. It’s tempting to think that the only thing you have to remember about planting daffodil bulbs is to set them pointy side up, but it’s a bit more complicated than that if \RX ZDQW WKHP WR Ă€ RZHU HYHU\ \HDU The trick is to set them deep enough. If you plant them just below the surface, as so many of people do, they dry out, which means they lack the food and moisture to get them through until the following year. The result is an uninteresting clump of leaves rather than a host of golden daffodils.
The third question I’m often asked is, ‘How far DSDUW VKRXOG , SODQW WKH EXEV" They should be planted about 3 inches / 8cm apart in holes about 10 inches / 25cm deep. It looks deep when you are dropping them in EXW LWÂśV ZRUWK WKH HIIRUW IRU WKH UHSHDW Ă€ RZHULQJ &KRRVH WKH ELJJHVW Âż UPHVW EXOEV \RX FDQ Âż QG for each variety. 7KH Âż QDO TXHVWLRQ , JHW DVNHG LV Âľ:KHQ FDQ , FXW GRZQ WKH IROLDJH DIWHU Ă€ RZHULQJ"Âś , ZRXOG suggest waiting for 6 weeks. If you have a very small garden and can’t bear to have untidy foliage lying around you might be better treating the bulbs as annuals (daffodil bulbs aren’t generally expensive.). Or you can plant them in an aquatic basket, and after Ă€ RZHULQJ \RX FDQ GLJ WKH EDVNHW XS ZDWHU WKH bulbs regularly then replant in the autumn.
You can plant daffodils any time now, to the end of October. Sooner is better.
Alternatively, you can buy dwarf varieties of GDIIRGLO ZKLFK KDYH GDLQWLHU À RZHUV DQG IROLDJH VR \RX FDQ KDYH SUHWW\ À RZHUV ZLWKRXW WKH resulting foliage posing a problem.
The next question I get asked a lot is, ‘What’s WKH GLIIHUHQFH EHWZHHQ GDIIRGLOV DQG QDUFLVVL"Âś
Whatever you decide, remember plant deeper than you think and‌
This is also a good question. All daffodils are narcissi, but not all narcissi are daffodils! ‘Daffodils’ is the name we give to narcissi with large trumpets.
Happy gardening!

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2018 Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine, and you can access the Council website and the Council Facebook page. Any queries: contact me or other councillors, we will, as always, try to help FIGHTING FOR HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES 1. Harworth and Bircotes Campaign Against the Proposed Incinerator. Planning Application to Nottinghamshire County Council: Ref. No ES/3860 for a 20MWE WasteTo-Energy Power Generator on Harworth Industrial Site. I found out about the application via another source and so had to request details from Notts. County Council, which we have shared with you, QHDUE\ SDULVK FRXQFLOV DQG Č´UPV RQ the industrial sites. Please note, there will be a Public Meeting on Monday 3rd September, starting at 6pm, at the Town Hall, with John Mann M.P. and a Notts. &RXQW\ &RXQFLO 3ODQQLQJ 2É?FHU ZKR wants to hear your views. This is a huge issue for everyone associated with our community - the potential impact on health, local business, property values, and future development is unthinkable. Fighting this proposal on your behalf is our primary concern – this is why the Town Council has taken the lead, why we will be objecting to this proposal to incinerate waste refuse on Lords Wood Road, and why we have taken the following action: Priority for Council: getting the 40 HARWORTH TODAY
application details into the public domain and raising public awareness about: • 320,000 tonnes per year of Refuse Derived Fuel – waste collected from councils, trade and industry • Waste transported by H.G.V.s – 7am to 7pm – a total of 70 in/out journeys per day on both Blyth Road and Snape Lane, along with 58 in/out journeys of lighter vehicles – that’s an increase of 128 journeys per day, 5 days a week, and an increase in vehicle-caused pollution. • The incineration of waste is planned to be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week • The size of the plant: 4066sq.m would occupy 2 plots on Lords Wood Road site, with a height of 30.6m (100ft) – and the chimney stack would be 65m (195ft) high. • Emissions from the chimney stack: particulate matter (PM) is condensed solid or liquid particles suspended in the atmosphere; particles less than 2.5 microns are associated ZLWK DGYHUVH KHDOWK HÎ?HFWV Č‚ D UHDO concern! Priority for Council: Adequate Consultation Period: Our size of population makes this more challenging than for smaller parish populations; hence the Town Council immediately asked for an extension to the consultation period – the new date for the end of consultation is 14th September. Priority for Council: Assisting the Community. This is why we put posters in public places, prepared objection letters for people to sign, along with a petition. We have a Fact Sheet/other information for people to read/learn more about this proposal – all available from the Town Hall and Council website - and we have held 2 drop-in sessions. Some councillors have knocked on doors, some of us have distributed material to the business community, and I have liaised with other organisations who also have concerns about this proposal. This is a most important issue for the Town Council and the people of Harworth and Bircotes to consider and respond to, along with those working in nearby business parks or living in neighbouring communities
- and I am grateful for the help and support from Town, District and County Council colleagues, members of the public, and from the business community. I am impressed by the number of people who have signed a letter objecting to the proposal, and by all those who have signed the petition – thank you. But, this work has to continue up to the 14th 6HSWHPEHU Č‚ ZH FDQQRW DÎ?RUG WR EH complacent – this is about our future welfare, please let Notts. County Council have your comments. An Important Point: Democracy means that everyone has the right to express their own opinion. The Town Council has details of the planning application and the address of the Planning Dept. at Notts. County, should you require it, plus a Fact Sheet with data assembled from the application – without bias –by a 3ODQQLQJ 2É?FHU You can also comment on line via the County Council Website link http:/ www.nottinghamshire. gov.uk/planningsearch/plandisp. aspx?AppNo=ES/3860. 2. Still Fighting for Harworth and Bircotes. Last month I mentioned Ζ ZDV KRSLQJ RÉ?FHUV IURP Nottinghamshire County Council would visit Harworth and Bircotes and see for themselves the potential this Town has; the good news is they will be here in September. This presents as an opportunity to enlighten them about the development, so far, of Harworth and Bircotes and the Colliery site; importantly, it is also an opportunity to help them see the big picture outlined in the Neighbourhood Plan for a new Town Centre, and in particular, the plans for improved WUDÉ?F PDQDJHPHQW DQG SHGHVWULDQ safety on Scrooby Road; previous ZRUN KDV LGHQWLČ´HG ZKHUH ZH QHHG more pedestrian crossings, and the one near the Health Centre certainly needs to be upgraded/made safer. Knowing that preparation is key, I have worked on my strategy, with plans, designs, statistics, and evidence of need for future investment that supports the Neighbourhood Plan, all to hand for them to see. I had to smile ZKHQ FRQČ´UPDWLRQ RI the visit was followed by a request TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

What is true is that the Town Council and Bassetlaw District Council are exploring funding options and looking at how we can bring the school back into use, which must be disappointing news for those spreading the rumour that Bassetlaw Council is planning to knock it down and build houses! Have you ever had one of those moments when you see something, but for some reason your brain doesn’t accept what your eyes are telling it?
