Welcome to

the SEPTEMBER 2014 edition

“A late summer garden has a tranquillity found no other time of the year.” - William Longgood

It seems that my decision to mention our multifamily Youth Hostel trip last month tempted fate! I said I had my fingers crossed for sunshine, however unfortunately, it rained for much of Saturday and although the sun came out for a lovely stroll around Castleton in the afternoon this was followed by thunder and lightening – which started 10minutes into our visit to the open air swimming pool in Hathersage and led to our early evacuation! We still had a fantastic time, and beautiful weather on the Sunday led us all up Mam Tor with amazing views across the Peak District. Sunshine wasn’t in short supply when I took my daughters out to Lanzarote a few days later, for a sneaky extra holiday that we managed to squeeze in this year, a great time was had by all! By the time you read this I will have also have been on our main family holiday – more about that next month, I am not planning on tempting fate again! The October issues will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Craft and Gift Fair There will be the first Harworth Jain's Craft and Gift Fair at Harworth Town Hall on the 19th of October 9.30am to 1pm. I am looking for local crafters to have a stall at the event. I have been running a successful craft fair in Langold and have just started them in Worksop and Maltby. I am hoping to have them in Harworth four times a year, with as many local people involved as possible. On the day there will be a raffle which is always in aid of a local good cause, for this event it will be Harworth Corps Drums, which is run by Peter Cox and teaches young people how to play and they attend local events. Hopefully they will be playing on the day. It will be free entry and parking. Please contact me if you would like to sell your crafts at the fair. Mark and Debbie Gore from Tickhill in Doncaster have recently been appointed by The Royal British Legion as the new Poppy Appeal Organiser’s for the Doncaster Area. In previous years the Poppy Appeal in Doncaster has raised in excess of a staggering £25,000 each year for The Royal British Legion so we are delighted that Mark and Debbie have offered to take over the organising of the appeal in area. When asked about why they wanted to get involved, Mark & Debbie said “we want to get involved in the local community and also give something back to those who have served our Country. Supporting The Royal British Legion is a perfect way to achieve both.” Mia Senior, Community Fundraiser for The Royal British Legion said “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Legion – without them we wouldn’t be able to support so many serving personnel, veterans and their families with practical help and advice.” Mark and Debbie can’t do it all alone and are looking for any extra help. Even if you could just offer a couple of hours during the 2 week Poppy Appeal, or help deliver some collection tins, they would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact them on RBLpoppyGore@hotmail.com or call Mia on 07769 877 443. T

community In July The Yorkshire Sculpture Park won the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014. The prize was presented at the National Gallery by Oscar-winning film and theatre director, Sam Mendes. The judges were incredibly impressed by YSP, and found it to be truly outstanding, with a bold artistic vision, consistently delivered at the highest level. “A perfect fusion of art and landscape, Yorkshire Sculpture Park has gone from modest beginnings to one of the finest outdoor museums one might ever imagine” said Stephen Deuchar, Chair of the Judges. And well deserved, this wonderful place has been a presence just off the M1 at West Bretton for 30 years, maybe more and has become the sort of place where the car park is packed! Who would think it? A Sculpture Park! And stuffed as the car park maybe, the park is so huge that it absorbs all the visitors and spreads them out throughout the grounds, the galleries, the shops and cafes. The main exhibition this summer is truly astonishing. I had not heard of Ursula Von Rydingsvard. She is a New York artist. Almost all her work is made in Cedar, and some of it is huge, all of it is visually strong work, some pieces evocative of landscape and rocky shoreline. I was truly astonished by the galleries and highly recommend this show. If you have time, energy and flat shoes make the short walk to the chapel and find the 6m high cast iron tree by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Free entry, but you pay for car parking www.ysp.co.uk English Heritage Brodsworth Hall held a host of events over the summer. Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 11am to 5pm a cast of actors will bring the household of 1918 to life and tell the stories of who returned from war and of those who sadly did not, and at Bolsover Castle every Saturday and Sunday until 28 September 11am, 1pm and 3pm 17th century Cavalier Horsemanship – members free, non-members £2 to normal ticket price www.englishheritage.org.uk/events 8

Claire Curneen is an artist whose work is always worth a look. She works in ceramic and her figures are not easily crafted, they hold the marks of her struggle to realise them and this in turn conveys a disquiet. I really hope this exhibition contains her St Sebastian figures which are stunning. Give Blood!

New PRO for Tickhill & District Lions

There will be a Blood Clinic held in Bawtry during September Venue: Bawtry New Hall, Station Road, DN10 6PU Date: Friday 19th September Time: 1-3.30pm and 4.30-7.15pm T

This is my first venture as the new PRO or Public Relations Officer for your local Tickhill and District Lions and I wanted to discuss communication as it seemed an important place to start! I've been having a good long think on this and started by wanting to 'push' the social media side and webpage of our Lions club being one of the younger members, to modernise our approach and so I shall. But then I thought a little harder and realised I was missing something, my Mum brought it to my attention when I told her what I was doing and it really hit home when she quite firmly explained that " I don't do that internet thing! I don't know how to Facebook , I don't even have a mobile phone and I prefer to write a letter thank you!" That reminded me that there will be a good number of the readership of this magazine in exactly that position. So with that in mind I would like to remind you the reader that we are here as a group of around 40 like-minded volunteers, raising money and giving our time to help good causes within our community and around the world and that you can see what we are about in a number of ways, modern and more traditional. We have a webpage 'tickhill-lions.com' which contains a great deal of information on what we do and how we can help. You can look us up on Facebook, just search Tickhill and District Lions and 'Like' our page, that way we can keep you up to date with what we are doing in your area and elsewhere. You can read our feature each month in this magazine and I will endeavour to keep you up to date with our exploits, activities and efforts to help. You can contact is in a number of ways too: email us at contact@tickhill-lions.com , by telephone on 08449 632462 or you can write to us at Tickhill & District Lions, 1 Heather Close, Tickhill, Doncaster DN11 9UU. So something for everyone I hope. You will see us supporting local events and raising money where we can so take the time to ask us what we do, you may be more than a little surprised by just how much work and support is put into the local area. I look forward to getting to know you all just a little better over the next year.

Harworth Brass

Harworth Brass will be performing at Blyth Church on Saturday 13th September, 7pm start.

ACTING TOGETHER A brand new initiative to support local amateur drama societies in villages in Bassetlaw was unleashed last Saturday at Everton Village Hall. It is called Acting Together and is an informal network that brings these already vibrant societies together with the aim of sharing resources and skills. The idea originated at Everton who tempted other groups along to the meeting with a sumptuous cream tea. After a group brainstorm to identify the challenges facing village drama, the official representatives of six local societies have agreed to form a mutually supportive affiliation. It brings together hundreds of local drama enthusiasts. It will enable all of the societies to widen the scope of their productions, offering an even great range of entertainment than they already do to theatre goers across North Nottinghamshire. The Drama Societies involved are Bawtry Players, Blyth Players, Haxey Players, The Youth Theatre Worksop, Gainsborough Players and Everton Village Players. Acting Together was the brainchild of three members of Everton: Linda Larder, Margaret Hamilton and Jan Bailey. Linda, who facilitated the meeting on Saturday said “We are all very excited that we can now offer even more benefits to our members as well as our audiences who will be encouraged to support each others productions”. She said that Amateur drama groups are very important to their villages, because they are part of the glue that holds village communities together. She continued “Acting Together will ensure the societies are sustained long into the future. We are also looking forward to the possibility of joint productions and tours” Other local amateur drama groups who may be interested in sharing skills, actors, marketing and resources should go to www.evertonvillageplayers.co.uk for more information. What is Pilates? Many people have heard of the term Pilates as a form of exercise but are really unsure what it is all about, so here’s the low down. Pilates is a unique method of exercise designed to improve strength and flexibility, using a mind body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture. The movements are flowing and controlled with emphasis on training core stability and balancing muscle systems, using mind and body control; these are brought together to achieve these aims through the following 8 sound principles: - concentration, centering, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control and flowing movement.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficially for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions, mental health conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy. The medical world is now realising the benefits of the Pilates method for the prevention and rehabilitation of back injuries. In order to prevent a recurrence of back pain, it is essential to retrain the deep abdominal and spinal muscles. Whilst Pilates is very effective for most people, it is important that you have an individual assessment prior to starting a class to ensure that you learn the underlying principles fundamental to achieving success from Pilates and so that the classes can incorporate your individual needs.

Blooms from Bulbs It may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems. • When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules: • Wear gloves when handling, 18

as some are toxic and can cause skin irritations • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them. Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any sign of mould (normally grey/blue in colour). • Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is ok • Damaged or split bulbs should not be selected • Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about 3 times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different. • Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development Bulbs can also be grown from seed. They take a good few years to flower, around five in my experience, but it’s very satisfying when they finally do and you can even have a go at cross pollinating to make your own varieties. Other favourites of mine are: Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’, an exquisite orange and purple flower Narcissus ‘Thalia’, a white and scented daffodil Galtonia, an imposing 60cm

The BIG Sleepout The BIG Sleepout - SAFE@LAST's signature event - returns to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire this Autumn. It's an event where people sleep rough for one night to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable young runaways. The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. SAFE@LAST is a registered charity working with vulnerable children and young people who have run away from, or have been thrown out of the place where they usually live – or are at risk of doing so. The charity

provides a 24 hour helpline, web chat and text service, support for the young people and their families, an extensive prevention education programme, a team of street workers and, most remarkably of all the only refuge in the UK for children and young people who are under the age of 16. The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for SAFE@LAST to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at The BIG Sleepout's will help the charity to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice. Come and join us at Lakeside Village, Doncaster on Friday 26th September, Crystal Peaks, Sheffield on Friday 3rd October, Barnsley (Venue TBC) on Friday 10th October or Parkgate Shopping Centre, Rotherham, on Friday 17th October. Get your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you, grab your sleeping bag and cardboard, and help raise funds and awareness for young runaways in South Yorkshire. T

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area We continue to advise people to be vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. As the weather improves also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. It’s the time of year when we start to carry out work again in our gardens now that the weather is improving. We strongly advise that people ensure that all lawnmowers and other gardens all stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Also ensuring that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We are still offering property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.

small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2014 UPDATES ON PROGRESS August and September are traditionally quiet times for most councils, but in Harworth and Bircotes there is a lot of activity that is evident for all to see, so let me bring you up-to-date on what is happening…. Petrol Station……. Will it, Won’t It Be Here Soon? Councillor Brian Letherland has been tenacious in his pursuit for information about this longawaited development, even writing to Head Office in America. He has now received a letter from ASDA confirming a petrol station will become operational in October. Our fingers are crossed that this will really happen, but past experiences with any proposed developments and the obstacles that hold up progress have left me rather cautious …… so I wait to see if this really happens ALDI Everybody can see the work ongoing on the ALDI site, they really are cracking on. I had a recent communication from a manager of the company about their intention to shortly start recruiting for staff, though I have no further details at the time of writing. When will the new store open? I am told not until February 2015 … watch this space. A1 New Buildings At my last meeting with A1 about the replacement of Airey houses, it was confirmed that work would begin in August, starting with the demolition of two houses that would then allow access onto the field behind, where new homes are to be built. It seems birds had nested in these two empty houses, so they had to be dealt with in a ‘friendly’ way. 24

Another problem was the current shortage of bricks, caused by the boom in house building. Carlton Bricks of Barnsley came to the rescue, and I was impressed by the proposed use of differing colours of the bricks and corresponding roof tiles, which I think will improve the overall appearance of the estate. Certainly this was the opinion of those residents on Smith Square who will be moving into the new homes, though my main purpose for visiting them was to seek their views on names for the two new streets. The overall result was to keep the name Smith Square but adjust the numbering accordingly, thus retaining the link with Smith Square on the opposite side of Amanda Road. I have fed this information back to A1, but can make no promises. The Colliery Site At the latest meeting on the Neighbourhood Plan, a representative of Harworth Estates (the estate side of U.K. Coal, and now two separate companies) outlined their vision for the colliery site. Yes, it does include new houses, but also green spaces, and community buildings and facilities, adequate roads and a bus terminal, and possibly a new school in the future. I have long petitioned for homes for older people on the site that would provide quick and convenient access to shops, the Health Centre and Town Hall, thus

meeting the needs of people as they grow older. When will all this happen? Possibly in the next 20 years, so too late for me to see the end result, BUT this is about future generations and ensuring Harworth and Bircotes has a future to offer to our young people. What about the current state of the colliery site? Well, I am told the shafts are currently being filled, so work is progressing in preparation for a new use for the site. It was thought-provoking to learn that in terms of the economic argument, coal is shipped from Australia more cheaply that it can be mined locally. What a crazy world! The Community Information Centre A recent tour around the building found me dodging plasterers, painters and electricians, who patiently stopped their work to accommodate my curiosity. The work will be completed in September, which means A1, B.D.C. and Credit Union will return, although the Town Clerk will stay in the Town Hall. It also means we can then repair the car park – the tendering process is currently coming underway. The Memorial Garden This feels a bit like a marathon! Why is it taking so long to get this in place? Well, one issue is funding from the H.C.A. – a government

community pot that has kindly provided the money, but requires many hoops to go through, including extensive consultation and paperwork. Then there are utility companies, Highways and Planning Approval for the design, and currently we are waiting for tree work to be carried out – again permission is needed. Despite making myself unpopular with some departments, I am confident my frustration will all come to an end and that we will deliver this project – I hope the gentleman on Baulk Lane who had the original idea for a memorial to miners killed at Harworth Colliery will be pleased with the end result.

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery Good news! Having passed on your comments and questions to the Practice Manager we are assured that we will get responses and they have been working very hard at finding new ways of meeting the needs of all patients. We will update you as things change or are in place but here are two things which are intended to help.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) This is an extension of the service already offered by some pharmacies and is an NHS Funded Service whereby instead of having to collect your repeat prescription it is sent electronically to the chemist of your choice. This can be a pharmacy near where you live, a pharmacy that delivers to your home or one near your place of work.

Please note:Patients will still have to order repeat prescription items. Patients have to complete a form to sign up for this service. Explanatory leaflets/forms are available in both surgeries. The Practice is tendering for a Care Coordinator to work with the most vulnerable of our elderly patients. The hope is to have someone appointed by September.

Come for a Health Test with The NHS Test Your Health Nurses if you are Under 74, have not been tested by them in the last 4 years and are not already receiving treatment for heart disease or high cholesterol. Or see one of The Practice Nurses if you are over 74years of age. Plus you could chat to representatives from Diabetes support, Public Health, Mental Health, Alcoholics Anonymous Family Support, groups involved in maintaining health through physical activity, and a host of other agencies to help support you in staying healthy. And /Or come along to the coffee morning and help raise funds for Cancer Care and Research whilst enjoying a drink and a slice of cake or a bun. We look forward to seeing you there.

Plus one from the PPG The Patients Participation Group is hosting a Health Awareness Session in conjunction with a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Free admission. Open to ALL our patients wherever they live. On . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . September 26th 2014 At . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Harworth Town Hall From . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10am to 12noon

Lastly we give notice that the Annual AGM will be held on Wednesday October 15th 2014 at 6.15 in Tickhill. The location will be on the website and in the waiting areas All patients are entitled and invited to attend. Three seats on the Committee will be up for election. Any patient can nominate themselves for election and forms will be available at both surgeries from reception. These should be returned to The PPG Secretary or returned to reception at either surgery. .

Retford Ramblers are always pleased to welcome new faces. Our walks are open to everyone, all that’s needed is walking boots and suitable clothing. We meet in the Chaplegate Car Park where car sharing is encouraged with a voluntary contribution being paid to the driver. Our Programme is quite varied with walks in the local area, the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Peak District and North Yorkshire. 26
