“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” John F. Kennedy Back to school time again already! Good luck to all those starting school or nursery for the first time, moving to a new school, heading off to College, University, Apprenticeship or first job. The holidays do seem to have gone quickly to me, but then they always do! This year I was lucky to enjoy a break in Croatia, where 14 of us enjoyed the amazing coastline and scenery, swam in the pool and sea, paddle boarded, pedaloed, took boat trips and enjoyed some great food and drink, as well spending lots of time relaxing and making some great memories. Back in July I took up the challenge to complete a Macmillan Mighty Hike - 26miles of the Thames path. I had just 2 weeks to prepare for the walk and raise a minimum of £250 for Macmillan. Fortunately, lots of dog walking, dancing, cricket and kettlebell training over recent months meant I was fit enough to complete the challenge, despite the limited preparation time. What I hadn’t fully appreciated was how long it takes to walk that distance, and how much my feet would hurt afterwards! A big thank you to Owen James at All for You Physio for providing a pre-walk treatment to ensure I was in good shape, and massive thanks to all those who sponsored me. £555 +gift aid has gone to Macmillan and my Just Giving page remains open if anyone else would like to donate to this amazing charity https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/paula-mickley

DEAR FRIENDS
T
IT SEEMS TO ME THAT EVERY SEASON IN THE CHURCH HAS ITS HIGH POINTS In Autumn we celebrate harvest with festivals and feasting, giving thanks to God for his creation and his ongoing care of it. In Winter we celebrate Christmas and the birth of God’s son Jesus, born not in a palace to royal parents but in a stable to a poor, vulnerable young woman so that God can know exactly what it is like to be one of us and so that we can know God intimately. In Spring we celebrate Easter by walking with Jesus through the last days of his life on earth. We contemplate what it must feel like to be abandoned by your friends, betrayed by those closest to you, lied about in court, and manipulated by the powers that be, to be divine but yet to accept humiliation and torture to open for us the gates of heaven, forever. In Summer we are privileged to celebrate love, as this is the wedding season, when couples make vows and exchange rings surrounded by their loved ones in our beautiful sacred spaces.
One of the most popular readings chosen by couples for their wedding ceremony in our churches is this, it is advice given in a letter to one of the first Christian churches from its founder, Saint Paul. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love knows no envy. Love does not boast. Love is not arrogant. Love is not rude. Love does not insist upon its rights. Love never becomes exasperated with another. Love never broods over imagined wrongs or slights. Love finds no pleasure in anything that is wrong. Love rejoices in the truth Love can bear anything. Love is completely trusting.
If we substitute our own name in the place of love, we very quickly form a picture of how loving we actually are. Please try it, it surprised me to find how hard hearted I could be. To be this loving is a huge challenge. But we are not left to do this on our own. We are surrounded by friends and family to love and who love us. We live and work and socialise in communities which provide us with plenty of people to practice on. And we have a pattern for our loving in Jesus who put us first. If you would like to find out more about this amazing sacrifice, please visit us in one of our local churches, you will be made most welcome. Love and Peace
Alice Curry
Pastor for Bawtry, Harworth and Tickhill Methodist Churches

LIFESTYLE
Dress for your Shape When it comes to looking good, it’s not your size or shape that matters, it’s the fit of your garments. Wearing the right clothes shouldn’t be about following the latest fashion trends; it should be about choosing what actually suits you and your body proportions to make you feel comfortable and confident. Women come in all shapes - the key is to know your proportions, and use fashion to accentuate your best features! When we dress, we are trying to present an image that is pleasing to the eye. We want to receive those compliments that tell us that we look great, because then, and only then, will we believe that we do look great! This allows us to feel good about ourselves.
are more along the lines of whether or not it will look good on you, without thinking about how will it accentuate your body shape so that it does look good on you. Colour is an important feature, and how we display it is the most important aspect.
Perhaps one of the most important reasons for having difficulty while selecting an outfit from your wardrobe would be the simple fact that the wardrobe is lacking in outfits that flatter your body shape. How many times have you played the “try on as many outfits as possible in 30 minutes” game while looking for the perfect outfit to wear, only to be left with the same decision and a mountain of clothes to put away? The actual problem is not that you have nothing to wear; it is that you have nothing in the wardrobe that flatters your figure/ colouring.
The aim should be to take the attention away from the aspect of our body that is the least pleasing to us and place it elsewhere. In order to accomplish this, you need to consider your body shape, decide which feature you wish to accent more, and discover how to accomplish that.
Here are some helpful tips:
Those of you who are top heavy and have a full bust will want to draw the eye to the lower portion of your physique. Wear a bolder color/pattern from the waist down, and a softer/plain colour above.
So, for many, the decision about “what to wear” is made as you purchase. Exactly how should you choose your outfits? Let’s start first by exploring how you currently go about selecting your clothing.
If you are thin everywhere, you will want to accentuate your figure by adding dimension. You can do this by choosing outfits that are loose and flowing, and by wearing horizontal patterns.
Many ladies are drawn first by the colors and patterns. Your thoughts
If you are bottom heavy and have full hips, you will want to select clothing

that draws the eye to the top of your body. You can accomplish this by wearing a splash of color or a bold print on the upper part of your figure, and a solid, darker color below the waist. For those of you who are wide everywhere, you will want to stay away from bold patterns or prints. Draw the eye to the upper portion of your torso to create a focal point. Those of you who have the envied luck to have a perfect hourglass figure have the easiest path of all. Also, remember that simple clothing that fits well is far better than fancier clothing that just “doesn’t look right.”

Are you taking on a Commercial Lease? If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial property tenant it is vital to understand what you are taking on. Signing up to a commercial lease is very different from renting residential property, with a range of responsibilities that can come as a big surprise if you’re not prepared. Here are some questions that every prospective commercial tenant should ask before agreeing to any tenancy: 1. What am I actually leasing? Is it an ‘eggshell’ lease/whole of property/surrounding land? This is relevant to repair obligations too. 2. What have I agreed to ‘keep in repair’? In a lease, ‘keep in repair’ actually means ‘put and keep in repair’ - you could be asked to carry out works to rectify disrepair that existed even before your lease. The phrase ‘keep the property in good repair and condition’ is even more onerous - be aware of the wording. 3. Can I terminate the lease early? Break clauses can give flexibility, but take note of any conditions limiting your ability to use this. 4. Do I have security of tenure? You may have the right to renew your lease at the end of your fixed term – this can depend on the wording in
your lease and the circumstances of your occupation. A legal adviser can assist you with assessing what your position is. 5. Can I transfer the lease or sublet? Many commercial landlords allow tenants to transfer/ sublet their lease, but only with their consent and subject to certain strict conditions. This could involve you being a guarantor, and paying the landlord’s legal costs when you look to deal with your lease in this way. 6. What other payments must I make? Insurance, service charge, VAT? Do you have to pay the landlord back for the buildings insurance premium? Is the landlord charging you for any services supplied, for example for the repair of any common parts? What amount/percentage must you pay? Can the landlord incur any expenses or are there restrictions? 7. Is the rent fixed for the whole of the term? Can the landlord review the rent? If so, when and on what basis? What happens if there is a disagreement? All of this should be set out in the lease itself. Make sure you know how and when rent review kicks in, so there are no nasty surprises later down the line.

SAMARITAN'S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD As we are nearing autumn, our thoughts will soon be turning towards Christmas and thinking about filling shoe boxes to send to children who have nothing.
The Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child sends shoe boxes filled with toys, books, pens, etc to children who have nothing - their faces are full of delight and happiness as they open their box as this is probably the only gift the children will receive at Christmas. During the last 25 years 157,782,657 shoe boxes have been sent to 163 countries and territories. If you would like to fill a shoe box, leaflets giving information and guidance on what to put in the boxes will be available from the beginning of September in Tickhill Library. Flat pack boxes will be on sale at the Library
or at the Coffee Morning at Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday, 2nd October. Items for sale at the coffee morning will include notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, hats/gloves, soap, flannels, toothbrushes, toys, colouring books and crayons, soft toys, combs, hair accessories, musical instruments. Notebooks, pens and pencils are particularly useful as this enables the older children to attend school if they have their own writing material. Due to increasing customs regulations toothpaste and sweets can no longer be included in the shoe boxes. If you are unable to fill a box yourself, why not get a group of friends to contribute and share the cost - as the well known saying goes 'every little helps'!

FREE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME COMING SOON TO HARWORTH T
Site Manager Award!
T
Ian Lockwood, site manager at Jones Homes’ Simpson Park development off Scrooby Road, has received a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the National House Building Council (NHBC). He is one of just 450 site managers from around 16,000 across the country to be awarded the prestigious accolade, which recognises those who achieve the highest standards in construction. It is the first Pride in the Job award that Ian has won in his 19-year career as a site manager, the last 12 years of which he has spent at Jones Homes. Ian, 59, of Conisbrough, said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to win a Pride in the Job award. “I have been very close in the past so to finally get my hands on one after all these years is a great feeling. I’m still on cloud nine.” He added: “At Jones Homes we always strive to deliver a quality product for our customers so I’m delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the judges. To run a successful site it’s important to have good man management skills and a dedicated workforce, and at Simpson Park I’m extremely fortunate to have an excellent team of people who are committed to their work.” Jones Homes is building 71 homes at Simpson Park, which is part of a wider regeneration of the former Harworth Coliery. The first residents have just moved in and two show homes have been launched. Construction work on the site is due to be completed by next summer. More information about Simpson Park is available at jones-homes.co.uk

Lions Eye Health Programme Working to Save Sight
Globally there are 253 million people who are blind or have moderate to severe distance vision impairment (MSVI). 1.1 billion have near-vision impairment simply because they don’t have a pair of glasses. 75% of all blindness and MSVI is avoidable. 89% of people with visual impairment live in developing countries. Lions from all over the world support various international projects. We should not forget the two million plus people in the UK living with sight loss, that’s around one person in 30. They don’t all have guide dogs, and/ or a white cane, or wear dark glasses. The majority of these people are just like you and me, but don’t see so well. It is estimated that the official number of people registered can be multiplied by 3 or 4. We are happy to promote World Sight Day, 10th October to highlight the need for all of us to have our eyes tested regularly.

T
Started in the 1950's as Doncaster Cine Guild at the height of enthusiasm for cine film, Doncaster Movie Makers has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing film formats and equipment. But we are still essentially the same as the original members - keen, enthusiastic, amateur film makers, who help each other produce films and advise on new equipment and editing software. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced filmmaker, Doncaster Movie Makers exists to bring like-minded individuals together to share knowledge, have fun and explore the fascinating world of filmmaking - from script to screen. Or you might just like to watch films. We have demonstrations, visiting speakers and film competitions. As a Club we film local events and attractions, such as the Tour de Yorkshire. In 2019 we will be showing films on themes such as “What I did today” and holding competitions for films inspired by the word “AFT” and Music Videos.
The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are a team that participate in a high paced, non-contact and exciting version of American Football called ‘Flag Football’. American Flag Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. The aim of Flag Football is to stop the ball carrier from scoring by removing their flag. The Roosters compete in the Middle England Conference Division One League, and are ranked the number one team in that division in South Yorkshire. In the 2019 season, the Roosters finished 25th out of 40 teams in Division One in the United Kingdom. The team includes a mixture of both male and female players, aged 16 and over, from all over South Yorkshire and beyond. The team currently has 4 female players who represent Great Britain in Flag Football, and two male members who qualified through to the final stages of selection for Great Britain. The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are always looking to recruit new players to the team, whether they have experience of playing American Football or not. Just bring enthusiasm and a bottle of water, as the first three training sessions are free at Rossington, Doncaster; the Roosters training ground. FRAUDSTERS TARGETING SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS BE AWARE The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has received intelligence to suggest that fraudsters are contacting social media influencers, based in the UK and abroad, offering them the opportunity to market a bogus product, service or investment opportunity. Fraudsters will present professional and credible pitches to the social media influencers and try to convince them to feature the opportunity for a fee on their social media profiles in order to entice unsuspecting followers of the influencer to sign up or make a purchase. Additionally, fraudsters are using the names of well-known public figures, implying that their opportunity or product is endorsed by the figure when it is not. The public should be aware that any apparent endorsement by celebrities, influencers or personalities does not necessarily mean that an investment, product or service is genuine. The public is urged to exercise a cautious approach to any such offer of investment, product or service with the same caution they would at any other time. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO If you are purchasing goods from a company you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, or ask friends or family for advice before completing a purchase. Professional-looking websites, adverts or social media posts do not guarantee that an investment
opportunity or product is genuine. Criminals can exploit the names of well-known brands or individuals to make them appear legitimate. Avoid paying for goods or services by bank transfer unless you know and trust the person or company. Payments via bank transfer offer you no protection if you become a victim of fraud. Instead, use your credit card or payment services such as PayPal as they offer you greater protection if you become a victim of fraud. If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible on 0300 123 2040 or via Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk NEWS FROM RECENT ARRESTS/ PROSECUTIONS/COURT RESULTS Male Charged with Possession of Bladed Article and Burglary A 41 year old Male from Harworth & Bircotes, was arrested on 14th August 2019 for possession of a knife in a public place, and Burglary and theft. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2019 KEEPING YOU AWARE OF DEVELOPMENTS IN OUR TOWN IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE; I WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED VIA THIS MAGAZINE, AND YOU CAN ACCESS THE COUNCIL WEBSITE AND THE COUNCIL FACEBOOK PAGE. ANY QUERIES: CONTACT ME OR OTHER COUNCILLORS, WE WILL, AS ALWAYS, TRY TO HELP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY Good News, Bad News. The last few weeks have been challenging for a number of reasons: State of North Notts. Border School. There are times when only plain speaking will suffice, and this is one of those occasions. First, let’s get the facts right: the school is owned by Nottinghamshire County Council, it is leased to the charity Delta Academy Trust but the building stands empty – hence the Town Council’s ambition to make better use of it. It has been/continues to be severely vandalised. Despite repeated warnings about safety inside, some people continue to trespass and enter the building, and for some, their intention seems to be to cause yet further damage.
32
Following the report of an attempted fire in the building, on 22nd July the Town Council took photographs inside the school which show the current degree of vandalism. They are shocking. We sent these to Notts. County Council, along with comments expressing our concern about the internal state of the building. We also sent them to Bassetlaw District Council, who have checked that the building itself is still structurally sound. Q. What don’t people understand about the word ‘trespass`, either on the school site, or on the property of those long-suffering residents living nearby - wouldn’t you be alarmed if you saw strangers in your garden at night?
Derbyshire; in Nottinghamshire it served only Bassetlaw. A real concern is the impact the loss of this service will have on the most vulnerable in our community – we all know that loss of contact with the wider community can lead to social isolation and health problems. The Town Council is currently researching the options for an alternative provider; if anyone has any information that could help, please contact the Town Clerk – 759037 -remember, the bus must be adapted for passengers with mobility issues. What About the Good News?
Sure Start returned to their unit in the Town Hall in August, and celebrated by holding an The Withdrawal of the official Opening Day on 22nd Community Bus Service August. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2019 Bircotes By the Beach`- it was much appreciated. Thanks also go to North Notts. Bid for funds towards several events being organised by the Town Council, including the Roller Rink, a Disco (held 23rd August), canopies for market stalls, and Christmas activities such as the Talegate Theatre Panto. And a Big Thumbs Up to those volunteers who cut back the hedge outside All Saints C of E school in August, you did a brilliant job. News from Bassetlaw District Council. Westmorland House: Following some good work by Bassetlaw Youth Council clearing overgrown areas and planting flowers, District Councillor Dave Challinor was invited to look at the garden furniture available to residents – he was not impressed! Dave has arranged for Bassetlaw Housing to view the worn-out furniture in the hope it can be replaced with seating fit for purpose. Wimpey Estate: Taking a Partnership Approach. All three District Councillors (Dave Challinor, Lynne Schuller and myself) have recently been involved in a number of issues identified by residents, ranging from much-needed
repairs to different forms of antisocial behaviour. We felt a multi-organisational partnership approach was needed and contacted a number of organisations, including Police and Housing – the result is that the new Head of Bassetlaw Housing and her team will be visiting the Estate in September. We hope this will lead to a plan of action, including involvement of local residents. N. B. We have also invited Paddy Tipping, Police and Crime Commissioner, to visit Harworth and Bircotes – we could do with some of those promised 20,000 new Police officers. Update New Colliery Gates have been fitted at the top of Colliery Road by Jones Homes in a newly built wall and, as promised, have been welded together – even better, the original pair of lions will be restored to their rightful place. The Town Council removed them to have them cleaned, but the professionals who clean other stonework such as the cenotaph advised against it because, we discovered, they are not made from stone but are a composite mixture. Town/District Councillor Lynne Schuller recently came across some bags of rubbish on a local estate. Thinking someone had been fly tipping, she quickly took a photograph, intending to send it to Environmental Services with a request to have the rubbish removed. Two young lads watching her were looking rather puzzled – who was this woman, what was she doing? When their dad appeared, she explained she was dealing with a fly tipping issue. “Oh no,” said dad. “My boys have collected this rubbish and bagged it, ready to put it in the bin”. Oops! Lynne thanked the boys for their hard work and congratulated them on their community spirit… as she later said, the moral of this story is never to make assumptions. Well, we’re all guilty of that at times!

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association On 6 August 2019 the group once again met for their monthly meeting. They were joined by Bassetlaw District Councillor, Dave Challinor. He talked to the group about the District Council’s efforts to boost footfall in the towns of Retford and Worksop by reducing parking charges in the short stay car parks to 50p for the first hour, £1 for 2 hours and £2 for 3 hours. He talked about antisocial behaviour in the area, and said Paddy Tipping, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire, had been invited to Harworth Bircotes on 9 September. One thousand police are required for Nottinghamshire. All three of our district councillors are working together on this. Dave and
36
Lynn Schuller are doing a series of roving surgeries, which involves walking around the estates, talking to residents, and putting cards through letter boxes, to try to address problems. District councillors are helping to raise £3000 in order to bring the cricket pavilion back into use. A Harworth Brass Centenary concert is to be held in the Town Hall on 14 June 2020. A commemorative programme will be available. Three will be a further concert in September. The group are proposing a trip to Carlton Park Hotel, Rotherham, for a 3-course lunch, with cabaret and bingo, at a cost of £14.95, plus coach fare. Date to be announced. It is also hoped to visit Liverpool for the Christmas markets, date to be announced. The group were grateful to the Thursday Knitters and Natters Group for their donation to the Christmas fund for Santa’s Grotto. Our group has given a donation of £500 towards the cost of the sand for the
beach on the Town Square for the week of 12-16 August. It is hoped that the weather will look favourably on us for the families to enjoy this facility. At the next meeting on 3 September there will be a talk by Emma from Aurora (the breast cancer charity). This should be of interest to many people, so everyone is welcome to attend, when refreshments will be provided. This will take place at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. OPEN BETWEEN
