Welcome to

the AUGUST 2014 edition

I am Summer, come to lure you away from your computer... come dance on my fresh grass, dig your toes into my beaches. - Oriana Green As I write this the school term is close to an end and thankfully summer seems to be with us. While these magazines are being printed I will be heading off with a large group of friends for a weekend in the Peak District, staying in a Youth Hostel. Several outdoor pursuits are planned including a bit of walking, sightseeing and swimming in an outdoor pool as well as sometime just enjoying the summer so fingers crossed for lots of sunshine. Last month I mentioned how busy the end of term would be for me, with the many extra demands on my time as well as getting these magazines to print. A local business sensing that it could also be a stressful time for me, kindly invited me into their salon for a reflexology session. Julie at Scandalo in Tickhill, turned out to be an accomplished reflexologist, and I enjoyed a relaxing hour, which was not only a stress reliever but also gave me an insight into aspects of my health to be mindful of. Thank you very much to Julie and the team at Scandalo, I can thoroughly recommend booking in for your own reflexology experience. The September issues will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 1st August. No, this isn’t a misprint – it really is the earliest deadline ever! Much the same as the last couple of summers I would like to take a couple of weeks off during August, while my children are enjoying their school holidays, so the closing date has been set very early so that I can get the magazines to print and then enjoy some relaxation time. Apologies if this does cause you any inconvenience normal midmonth closing dates will be resumed in September!

Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Blizard Physiotherapy, have started a ‘CASH BACK’ scheme together with St Patricks School in Bircotes. For every appointment made by a pupil of the school or one of their relatives, Blizard Physiotherapy will donate £1 back to the school for the school to use in whatever area they require. Clinic director and physiotherapist; Jenny Blizard said “We have been established in Bircotes for two years now and believe that it is really important to get involved within the local community and thought that raising much needed extra funds for the local school would be a really great way for us to make a difference” “We have had a really positive response from St Patrick`s and it is great to help a local cause, so much so that we are now looking to roll this initiative out 4

Harworth Colliery Football Club August Update The Football club are gearing up for the new 2014-2015 Season and as ever it will throw up plenty of challenges that we will have to get our teeth into, after watching the World Cup though it will be good to get down and actually get the lads out on the Training and playing fields and get on with the Job at hand. The Club has had a big decision to make during the close season and that was whether to keep the 3 Saturday teams or concentrate on two, people need to remember that we are a village club and we come up against clubs that just concentrate on the one and some have a lot larger population to choose from. It would have been easy to lose a team but we must as a club give the young lads who pass from Juniors to Seniors a chance to progress and so we will be keeping the 3rd team but changing their name to Harworth Colliery Colts, yes there will be tough times during the season but we must give everyone the oppurtunity to play.

All the Improvements and teams cost money and we are proud to state that we are the only club in the area that does not charge the Juniors. Teams in Tickhill and Bawtry ask for £100+, To enable us to do this we must fundraise and the Juniors will be in ASDA helping to bag pack on August 9th, so thanks to ASDA for allowing us in. If you are in on that date please give generously! Along with this, on the 16th of August we have a Summer Disco night in the Welfare Hall (See poster and Facebook page for Details) tickets are £3 and is a follow up to the hugely succesful 70’s/80’s night. These events are vital to the continuation of the club and hope all the village can get behind us for what I’m sure will be a great occasion again. All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page, hope to see you all at the Colliery 2014-2015 Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@hotmail.co.uk @jonycw

The 1st team will begin their campaign on the 9th of August, fixtures are yet to be announced so please keep an eye out for these, we really want to get the whole community involved whether spectating or involved in supporting the club financially through local businesses. It was hoped that the 1st team would gain promotion last year as we have been working hard to improve the ground facilities but that wasn’t to be, but that doesn’t we mean we stand still and over the close season we have again been making improvements and huge thanks to Matty Roberts of Roberts Builders, Neil at Clay Lane and Micheal Wapplington for there assitance and hard work, as well as Ross Lowder and Gus Brammer for cutting through the old Rope Gear that surrounded the pitch, this will be replaced with Walls and Scaffold Tubing bringing the ground upto date. Still plenty to do but with the help of the people mentioned along with our Committee and Pavilion Staff we will I’m sure get there. 10

community This year is flying by and so much is happening here at the Sanctuary. Our annual dog show took place on 6th July and what a terrific day it was. The weather was so kind to us and the sun shone all day. Everyone had so much fun showing off their beloved pets. Having picnics and enjoying the BBQ . A very big thank you to people that manned stalls and baked cakes. Also everyone that came along to join in the fun. It was a brilliant fund raising day and it was so moving to see lots of dogs that we had re homed looking happy and healthy, it makes all our hard work worthwhile . Also a big thanks to some new volunteers particularly Heather who has had Tom bola stalls at a couple of gala’s in Doncaster and Maureen who has helped on street collections. Thank you also for people that take the time to turn up regularly come rain or shine we couldn’t carry on with fund raising without you. I’m not sure if everyone is aware we also have a charity shop on Retford Road, Manton, Worksop which is open for most of the week now thanks to new volunteers. It’s a lovely little shop selling well priced ornaments, jewellery, gifts and much more - it’s a little Aladdin’s cave. If you’re looking for something different why not pop down and take a look.

Getting onto the Sanctuary now, our new building work is coming along wonderfully and we are all getting excited about our new reception after having such a small space to work in previously this looks like the prince of facilities. We will soon be planning where to

Finding a forever home arrange desks and furniture not to mention the odd resident dog or two so we are all getting rather giddy. We must apologise for the inconvenience our building work has created it seems as though we have been living on a building site for ever. However when you are a charity you have to earn the money before you can spend it, and it takes time, but we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, thank goodness. We have lots of lovely dogs and cats here that all need loving homes and a second chance, so please if you are looking for that special pet to share your life please come along to speak to us we will give you all the help you need. Whether you are interested in fostering one of our older dogs or just want a chat about which dog or cat would be suitable we are here to help. Everyone have a great summer but please don’t leave your most treasured best friend in a hot car or without water on sunny days. Please call us on 01302 711330 and leave a message someone will call you back or 07969 203206. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

Come along and s oday. see uT

Sally Female May 2013 6 Year No No Older

My owner died and left me all alone. There was nobody in the family who could take me in and no neighbours to care for me. I felt so unloved. Its no wonder that Im a little grumpy at times !!! Sally loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss! She desperately wants to be friends but reads the signals wrong sometimes!! A home where she will be allowed the freedom to chose when she wants fusses would suit her best as she is not a lapcat.

Frank Male May 2014 6 Months Possibly Yes Yes

Frank was rehomed with his sister, Stevie, as a kitten and has been very happy there. Unfortunately their landlord has changed his policy with regard to pets so they have sadly had to return to Mayflower. Frank is the more confident of the pair and is always the one looking for fun (or trouble!!) He is also very affectionate and purrs like a tractor when he finally stops for a cuddle Frank and Stevie are very close and must be rehomed together. Have you room in your hearts and home for this adorable pair?

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Thank you to everyone who shared their comments, views and suggestions with us at the very hot and Sunny Tickhill Gala on July 5th 2014. We would like to reassure everyone that anonymity has been maintained and all of these have been passed to the Medical Practice. We were pleased to speak to so many patients, to receive suggestions for change and to have interest in joining the group. The comments questions and suggestions fell roughly into the following categories:• Difficulty in getting an Appointment including when using online-booking and the Telephone System • Procedure for getting test results. • Reception. • Positive comments and praise. • The Out of Hours Service. We were fortunate to get most of our input from groups who we don’t normally access i.e. teenagers, adults who are working, and carers. Whilst also receiving some feedback from the retired members of our patients. Very many thanks. Responses and feedback will be shared as soon as we have it. As promised we continue to keep you informed about appointments not attended. For May these were Tickhill 98 did not attend which is equivalent to 25 hours and for the Colliery 75 did not attend which is equivalent to 18 hours. 14

Patients who are over 75 years of age will have received or will be receiving a letter informing them of their named GP. The responsibilities of the named GP are to: • Take lead responsibility for ensuring that all appropriate services required under the contract with the practice are delivered to the patient • Where required, based on the professional judgement of the named GP, work with relevant associated health and social care professionals to deliver a multidisciplinary care package that meets the needs of the patient • Ensure that the physical and psychological needs of the patient are recognised and responded to by the relevant clinicians in the practice • Ensure that the patient has access to a health check if requested, which is already a requirement of the GP contract regulations. The named GP will not: • Take on vicarious responsibility for the work of other doctors or health professionals • Take on 24-hour responsibility for the patient, or have to change their working hours. The requirement does not imply personal availability for GPs throughout the working week. • Be the only GP or clinician who will provide care to that patient.

Well Being Event which we are hoping will include The NHS Test Your Health Nurses for patients under 74 who have not been tested in the last 4 years and are not already on cholesterol lowering medications or under treatment for Heart disease. Plus representatives from Diabetes support, Public Health, Mental Health, Alcoholics Anonymous Family Support, groups involved in maintaining health through physical activity, and a host of other agencies to help support you in staying healthy. If you missed the last one at Harworth come along all patients are most welcome and enjoy free refreshments.

The AGM of The Tickhill and Colliery PPG wil be held On October 15th 2014 at 6.15 in Tickhill at a location yet to be confirmed. There are 3 places on the committee up for election. Any patient of the Medical Practice can nominate themselves but will need a seconder who is also a patient. Voting will take place at the AGM. Nomination forms are available from reception at either surgery and can be returned there.

Advance notice of events...

You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at

DRIVE AWAY THE PAIN! Nearly 2/3 of workers commute by car which over an average week can add up to a significant number of hours, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal problems like back and neck pain. Workplace assessments are now more common with an increased awareness of work station ergonomics. However, the correct set up in a car can also have huge health benefits in terms of improving posture and minimising risks of aches and pains. Both people and cars come in all different shapes and sizes so it will take a little time to achieve a ‘best fit’. Work through the following checks to optimise your position in your car…

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

Raise the seat as high as is comfortable to ensure maximum vision of the road. Move the seat forwards until you can fully depress the pedals whilst maintaining slightly flexed knees. Have the angle of the back rest at about 20 degrees from vertical – you should have contact with the seat up to shoulder height whilst being able to hold the steering wheel with slightly flexed elbows.

Try Mediation

Check the lumbar support ‘fits’ your spinal shape. The head rest should be at a height just above eye level sitting about 2-3cm from the back of the head (this minimises the risk of injury in the event of a collision) Your hands should be positioned at ‘10 and 2’ with both hands in place for spinal and muscular balance. Remember our bodies are designed to move - you should aim to break for a stretch and a stroll every 2 hours.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area We continue to advise people to be vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. As the weather improves also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. It’s the time of year when we start to carry out work again in our gardens now that the weather is improving. We strongly advise that people ensure that all lawnmowers and other gardens all stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Also ensuring that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We are still offering property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.

Vehicles Crime There has been a slight reduction in vehicle crime however we continue to strongly urge people to ensure that they lock their vehicles and do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be for Sat Navs, small change

Criminal Damage Theft Other

etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is that Insurance companies tend not to pay out if you leave your vehicle insecure and it gets broken into or stolen, so please double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked.

Prosecutions of Note A male and a female from Bircotes have both recently pleaded guilty at court for production of Class B Drug and permit production of Class B Drug where the male received 6 months imprisonment suspended for 6 months 18 months Supervision 200 hours unpaid work. The female received 18 month Conditional Discharge. A Female from the Harworth area pleaded guilty to 2 x shop thefts at Asda Store Harworth where she received a discharge for 6 months and ordered to pay £20.94 compensation to Asda. A male from the Harworth area also recently appeared at court and pleaded guilty to 2 x shop thefts at Asda Store Harworth and was sentenced to Conditional discharge for 12 months and compensation to the store.

Quad Bikes in the area There have been a number of incidents in recent months where quad bikes and off road bikes have been used in and around the area. In response to this plans are being put in place to trace the drivers and owners of these vehicles. If anyone has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them we would urge you to report this either directly

to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Drugs Offences There has been an increase in the number of drug offences such as possession of a controlled substance in the last month where a number of Misuse of Drugs Act Warrants have been carried out and enquiries are ongoing in relation to these warrants. We would ask that if anyone has information relating to sale or use of drugs in the Harworth and Bircotes area that they report it. This can either be direct to the Police or can be via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where you can pass information anonymously via the number shown above.

Garden View

Native but Nice! With a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed ‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives! Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the triking red poppies which adorn the fields midway through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers. 24

The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested. The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs.

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants they’re born survivors!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - AUGUST 2014

GOOD NEWS ON FUNDING Government Funding To Regions The Government has announced funding to some regions in order to support business, create jobs, build houses and make improvements to local infrastructure. Bassetlaw links with two regions: South Yorkshire (known as the Sheffield City Region) and Nottinghamshire/ Derbyshire (or D2N2). Harworth and Bircotes will benefit because over £1m has been allocated for infrastructure improvements that will help support the further development of the Colliery site – a key issue for our Town. What does this mean? I don’t have the details yet, but my understanding is that one major improvement will be for traffic accessing/leaving Blyth A1 roundabout; possibly this may include a filter lane onto the B road from Blyth to Harworth. I hope to find out more shortly.

FAMILY FUN DAY!

20th September at the Tommy Simpson Field 2pm – 4pm The Town Council will be holding a Family Fun Afternoon on the Tommy Simpson field on 20th September. There will be games, stalls, entertainment and food 28

available – come along and join in the fun! Council will also be seeking your opinion on possible future proposals for the field – these could include a new nursery school, improved play area and equipment, new sports changing room facilities and community hall. Come and tell us what you think!

REDUCED SPEED LIMIT NEAR SCHOOLS As part of a rolling policy for road safety near schools, Notts. County Council will be introducing a 20m.p.h. speed limit in Bircotes near Serlby Park Primary, St. Patrick’s and Serlby Park Secondary schools. The reduced speed limit will affect all Shrewsbury Road and part of Whitehouse Road. I don’t know when this will happen but County have promised the new signage will be in place by March 2015 at the latest. You can find out more by accessing highway.programme@ nottscc.gov.uk or ringing 0300 5008080

A VISIT BY THE BISHOP OF SOUTHWELL We were honoured to be visited on 23rd June by Bishop Tony Porter, along with the Area Dean Simon Cash and Lay Chair John Chambers. They were accompanied by our own Ann Wilson, Church Warden, and Brian Letherland, Vice Chair of Harworth Parochial Church Council. The Bishop was particularly interested in the future of Harworth and Bircotes now that Harworth Colliery is officially closed. When I said goodbye to our visitors they then met up with Dave Lewis, Harworth Colliery Manager, who had organised a tour of the colliery site and a trip to the top of the tower. Before they left, the Bishop was presented with a miner’s lamp.

community A1 and B.D.C. and from Credit Union have all been temporarily transferred to the Town Hall, along with the Town Clerk. The car park is very busy, due to spaces ‘lost’ to the building work and temporary fencing, and I thank everyone for their co-operation and understanding during these short-term arrangements.

THE WORST BEHAVIOUR Who is it who has desecrated a number of graves and cremation plots? Who has destroyed flowers left by caring relatives, dislodged urns and piled soil on top of cremation stones? Can you imagine the shock and anguish experienced by someone visiting the grave of their son, their wife, their mother? I don’t understand why anyone would stoop so low as to do this to innocent people but the pain caused goes beyond mischief-making, it is vandalism. I would be grateful for all cemetery visitors who see any suspicious behaviour to report this to Council.

Councillor June Evans Chair Further to June’s notification of the Bishops visit, it so happened that this day marked the Start of National Armed Forces week and in keeping with other Councils we fly the special flag for this occasion. So we asked the Bishop to say a prayer for all our Armed Forces as we raised the Flag, the Bishop duly obliged and thanked all our Armed Forces for their professionalism, bravery, and the defence of our freedom. Well Done Bishop and thank you. Cllr Brian Letherland.
