For our family, it brings the end of Primary School as my youngest moves on to join her brother and sister at Secondary School in September. I am sure that if previous years are anything to go by there will be tears shed in church on the last day of term by pupils and parents alike!

What will I do in September, when after 12 years I have no more morning and afternoon school runs to do? No more Primary PTA and the end of my term as a Parent Governor will also have been reached. I am very sure I will still find my time filled – (before any of you rush forward with other suggestions!) The August issues will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th July. The busiest week of my month dealing with all the community content and advertising that pours in around this deadline coincides with the last week of term, together with many of the activities already described – please help me to ensure that I don’t miss out on these activities, and get your contributions in on time (early would be fantastic!) – thank you. Please be aware that the following month the closing date falls very early in August, so that I can take a period off work to spend time with my family during the holiday period.
Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery
Tickhill & District Lions Tickhill & District Lions are proud to announce that three of our members (Steve Radford, Martin Harper and Graham Mickley) will be taking the rest of the year off beer to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. They’ve committed not to let a drop of alcohol (beer or otherwise) pass their lips until 2014 is out, which for those of you who know these three is a tall order! Lion-President Steve Radford said “Some people run a marathon but for various reasons, mostly laziness, we can’t do that. So this is our equivalent. It’s going to be tough; but that’s kind of the point, and once we have the first few sponsors signed up there’s no going back as it’s all for a good cause.” The three are keen to point out that they’re not planning to turn into social recluses and will be out and about supporting their local pubs as much as ever. So if you see them, or hear a shout of “mine’s a lime and soda”, please give them your support and consider popping a pound or two in their collecting tin. Alternatively you can donate via their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/yearoffbeer T 8

We still hear comments and receive questions about problems getting an appointment or getting through to the Surgery by telephone. A new telephone system to ease telephone access could indeed help but will cost a lot of money. Here are some figures that may surprise you. We hope you will spread the word and help improve the situation. In April 2014 156 appointments were missed at Tickhill Surgery this equates to 34 hours or 2040 minutes. and 115 appointments were missed at The Colliery Surgery this equates to 31 hours or 1873 minutes The total cost of these missed appointments = £6868.00 Please ensure that if that you can’t attend an appointment, you cancel and thus allow it to be offered to someone else. ‘X’ MARKS THE SPOT. . . OR DOES IT? Patients often arrive at their Physiotherapy assessment with some idea of what is wrong… ”I’ve got Achilles tendonitis/runner’s knee/tennis elbow…” Not unreasonably, this conclusion is based on the fact that it is their Achilles tendon/ knee/elbow that hurts. However, for many patients, the pain they are experiencing in one part of their body is actually caused by a problem elsewhere. This is referred pain. Left arm or jaw symptoms felt during a heart attack is a familiar example of referred pain. Although the exact mechanism explaining this sort of pain remains unclear, pain scientists believe it is linked to the way we are ‘wired up’. For instance, the nerves from your Achilles tendon share the same route to your brain as the nerves in your lower back, and your brain can’t always tell the difference between the two. If you have referred pain, the onset of pain may be hard to explain – there is no memorable injury or significant change to your training schedule or workload, the pain may be hard to find – moving and poking the painful area doesn’t quite illicit the symptoms as you would expect (though the area may still be tender to touch) and ‘treating’ the painful area (ice, massage, stretches) doesn’t work.

Winning Dog Groom Local Dog Groomer , Fiona Durdy who runs Groom2U entered the UK wide grooming Competition at the English Groomers Challenge in Kent and walked away with first place for her handstrip of Peppa the border terrier. Peppa actually stepped in at the last moment after problems with the dog Fiona planned to use, so the grooming duo had not worked together prior to the challenge, but Peppa was an absolute superstar and enjoyed her day in the limelight. Groom2U have their brand new Dog Grooming Spa Van, complete with all the latest salon equipment and products to pamper your dog including an on board hydrobath, facials, foot spas and Pawdicures. Groom2U will come to your home or work address. All the mess is contained in the van and only your dogs are in the salon; this can take the stress out of grooming. Their services will appeal to a wide range of people who perhaps for varying reasons cannot get to a traditional shop based salon, Groom2U work evenings and weekends as well as the normal shop hours so hopefully their flexible work hours should open up dog grooming to clients who previously were excluded. They are happy to care for dogs that just want a wash and go service but, are fully trained in clipping, scissoring, hand stripping, nail trimming, micro-chipping, ear and anal gland care. Groom2U was launched at the start of the year by Husband and Wife team, who have turned their love of animals into a new business venture. John and Fiona Durdy have already started doing the rounds in the Harworth, Bawtry, Blyth, Tickhill, Doncaster, Retford and Worksop areas. Fiona is a fully trained dog groomer who is also certified to Microchip small animals. John and Fiona also run their family farm in Harworth and share their home with their own dogs and their two young children who are equally as obsessed with dogs. Please give them a ring to discuss your dogs needs: 07879 427857 or email fionadurdy@googlemail.com T

CountrybyMarket Hilary Cartmel This article continues my occasional page on shopping and local sustainability. Many of you have already discovered and shop at the Country Market which takes place in Tickhill every Friday morning at 10 am sharp at the Methodist Church School Room, to the rear of the Methodist Church, and on a fine day out on the front car-park. This Market sells Jam, preserves, honey, cakes, bread, pies and baking of all kinds, eggs, craftwork, plants and cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and a very popular café. I have over the years bought delicious cakes from the market and from Taylors who stock their baking in the store. I still have Ruth Taylor’s plants flourishing in my garden from the time when I first moved to the area and the Market was held in the Parish rooms opposite Spar. What I didn’t know was how old this organisation is and what it means. I had assumed it was organised by The Women’s Institute, and I know I’m not the only one, and this is because it used to be. Now it is a separate Co Operative Social Enterprise. The idea for the Women’s Institute came to the UK from Canada in 1913 and organised local production and distribution of food in Country areas enabling WI members, pensioners and unemployed or disabled ex-servicemen to sell their produce. This began in Anglesey in 1916 during the food shortages of WW1 . The Market in Lewes has run continually for almost a century, it was set up in 1919. In 1932 the Ministry of Agriculture asked the WI to assist in feeding the nation and to help the unemployed during the depression. Having functioned for about 80 years as a part of the Women’s Institute , The Country Markets became a separate limited company in 1995. Over the years the number and spread of the markets grew Countrywide. Now there are 300 in England, Wales and the Channel Islands. In the South Yorkshire Area there are markets in Doncaster, Holmfirth, Penistone, Sheffield S10 and Tickhill. The producers certainly do not seem to be doing this work for a hearty living, but for the pleasure of making and getting some return. In 2005 the Markets across the UK had an annual turnover of £11 million. Presumably now it has increased considerably. Every producer becomes a shareholder by handing over ‘The King’s Shilling’. Today it is still a princely 5p to join, as it was in 1913. It may be a paltry sum now, but you 12
HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY
could sell your life for the King’s Shilling at one time. And once you have joined you become a member of a Co Operative. Anyone over the age of 16 can join. All goods are sold together, accounted for, managed during the sale and a cheque issued at the end of the month for the sum of your goods less about 10% to cover costs of running the market (hall rent, insurance etc). All goods sold must be produced, made by or grown by the producer. No goods that are bought-in can be sold, the point of the Market is local sustainability which results in particularity to the area and fresh seasonal produce together with low or zero transport costs. The plants you buy you know will grow in this area because they were raised here, the cakes are delicious because they are fresh, the craftwork has been made by the person behind the counter. All goods are labelled with the producers name so any comments you want to make about the jam you bought last week, to discuss ingredients, your allergy control or to wheedle a recipe you can talk directly to the cook. All food handlers are required by law to undertake relevant food hygiene training. The customer can rely on the produce they buy being of the highest standard. The Markets consciously do not compete with local suppliers, but they aim to compliment what is on offer locally, perhaps by selling different varieties of produce and at a comparable price On a Friday morning green cloth-covered baskets filled with baking travel out to fulfil orders and tempt shoppers in the local schools and businesses around the town. Tickhill Country Market 10 to 11.45am every Friday at the Methodist Church School Room, behind the Methodist Church. Orders can be taken for all goods, for special craft commissions, tomato and other plants and for occasions like Christmas and Easter, weddings and birthdays which require special baking and cakes. www.sycountrymarkets.co.uk

& what’s going on - JULY 2014 HILARY
Rotherham’s roadside planting is in full bloom, and looks absolutely stunning. As you drive round the borough there is a mass of colour along the verges and on the roundabouts, red and orange poppies, bright blue cornflowers, plantain and my favourite weed – Dyers Weld. This scheme is in its second year, and will change and develop over the summer. It is a living art-work and statement of civic pride, and I would love to see this style of planting throughout South Yorkshire. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Exhibition: 28 June - 7th September Common Ground: An Amusement of Recycled Art Donna Bramall and Jungle use recycled objects to create art which reflects on how the past has shaped their adult lives. AND Two Wheels Good: A Celebration of Cycling in Doncaster 31st May – 24th August 2014.To coincide with the start of this year’s Tour de France in Yorkshire ‘Two Wheels Good’ celebrates the role of the bike and cycling in Doncaster. The exhibition, which includes historical items from the collection of Doncaster Museum Service displayed alongside loans from local cyclists and cycling clubs, will be of interest to anyone who has ever ridden a bike, AND Doncaster Art Club 17th July – 14th September 2014 always one of the most popular exhibitions. Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Although there has been a slight drop we continue to advise people to check they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. As the weather improves also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property It’s the time of year when we start to carry out work again in our gardens now that the weather is improving. We strongly advise that people ensure that all lawnmowers and other gardens all stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Also ensuring that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We are still offering property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.
Theft from Vehicles
continue to strongly urge people to ensure that they lock their vehicles and do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be for Sat Navs, small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is that Insurance companies tend not to pay out if you leave your vehicle insecure and it gets broken into or stolen, so please double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked. There have also been a number of thefts of catalytic convertors from vehicles in the area these have been from residential addresses. We would ask that you bear this in mind when parking your vehicle in order to try and make it as difficult as possible for someone to be able to remove the catalytic convertor from it.
Quad Bikes in the area There have been a number of incidents in recent months where quad bikes have been used in and around the area. In response to this plans are being put in place to trace the drivers and owners of these vehicles. If anyone has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them we would urge you to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Dealing with doorstep callers
Whilst these callers may well be genuine callers, we’d like to remind residents to carefully consider accepting work from cold callers who knock on your door. If there are problems with the goods they sell or the work they do you may struggle to contact them again, you could end up paying more than you thought you had agreed to, and are likely to have little recourse. You should always ask to see some identification from callers at your door. Genuine callers will normally make an appointment first and carry identification from their company with their photograph on. Most organisations have a telephone number that you can call to verify the representative’s identity. We would usually advise not to use the number stated on their card as it could be false, and suggest looking up the company in the telephone book or on the internet. To find details of trusted traders in your area you can use the Buy With Confidence scheme. Buy With Confidence is run by Trading Standards - Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council - with support from Age Concern and Consumer Direct. For further details visit www. buywithconfidence.gov.uk . If you don’t have internet access you can call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 and they can help you find the traders that you need. The scheme cannot guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong, but members of the scheme must deal with complaints fairly, and Trading Standards will help both sides to reach a fair solution. For further advice on dealing with unexpected callers please see our dealing with unexpected callers guide. If you are concerned about cold callers in your area you can call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or in an emergency 999.
With the arrival of spring there is likely to be an increase in doorstep callers We are continuing to have incidents offering to carry out gardening work Please pass this information to family of thefts of and from vehicles and such as tree cutting, selling of compost members, friends, neighbours and also criminal damage to vehicles in also roof and driveway cleaning and anyone you think maybe vulnerable. the Harworth and Bircotes area. Maximus flora phobia true or just a tall story? I’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think. Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house. 20
There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil. If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of

A letter from your Methodist Minister
resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3: 10-11).
Dear Friends,
This summer as we engage in the hot weather and become busier than before, we are reminded that God is still waiting for us to be in his presence. Have a good summer break. God bless.
A story is told of a boy who received an unusual Christmas present. The boy peeled back the layers of wrapping paper from the tiny box. Inside he found a small, hand-written note from his father. “Son,” it read, “this year I will give you 365 hours, an hour every day after dinner.” This young man found the gift as the greatest gift he had ever had in his life. The reason was that his dad not only kept his promise, but every year he renewed it. This boy claimed that he has become what he is due to his father’s one-houra-day investment in his life. One hour of leading, loving, and learning changed the boy’s life for good. Someone has noted that time for our family is like oxygen to our bodies. It is a minimum necessary for survival. And it takes quantity as well as quality to develop warm and caring relationships. On the other hand, there was another family that was always bidding for more time. Dad was an expert in hurrying – hurrying for work, school runs, holidays, and you name it. The family never enjoyed anything because they were always hurrying on to do something else. I wonder if both situations described above ring a bell in our lives. We sometimes forget that God is a parent who has promised to be with us always and is sticking to his promise. However, he waits for us to make time with him. He yearns for us to have a relationship with him and he’s always waiting for us to show up. But, most often, we are too busy running around and ending up not enjoying life as it is meant to be. God is not expecting us to show up when things get off hand in our lives. Like the first case, he expects us to have some time together with him daily – maybe a few minutes or an hour or more depending on our circumstances. It could be reading a bible passage, prayer, reflecting on an issue, etc. I wonder if I can remind you of the results of being in the presence of your maker daily by quoting a couple of bible passages: As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10: 38-42)

Asda Harworth are urging local people to nominate a local charity or organisation to receive a financial reward. The store is searching for charities, organisations or projects in the area, that help and support the local community and will be rewarding one local cause with a £100 donation. It’s all part of the store’s ‘Chosen By You Given By Us’ initiative. Customers are invited to nominate an organisation by filling out a nomination card in the store’s new community area, on the store community page at www.asda.com or simply by telling the Community Colleague in-store. Once all the nominations have been received, a shortlist of three will be selected. Customers will then be asked to vote for the most deserving and the one that receives the most votes will be presented with a £100 donation. Asda Harworth’s Community Colleague Amy Georgeson said “We want our customers to help us to find a local cause that is in need of our support. We want to reward that organisation with this donation to help them to continue to do their fantastic work in the community. I’m looking forward to hearing all about the great things going on in the local area, I’m sure there are lots of deserving causes.”
I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his
The £100 has been funded by the Asda Foundation, which was set up in 1988 to support local good causes chosen by Asda colleagues, and is funded by profits from the mid–week national lottery. T

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JULY 2014
NEW LOCAL STATION FOR THE POLICE I recently met with architects, builders and police representatives for a pre-build discussion about the police extension to the Community Information Centre. The conversation ranged from roof trusses and nearest-match bricks to colour schemes and types of windows; security and C.C.T.V. surveillance is of key importance. Work has now started, and the builders estimate the work will take 15 weeks. During this time services available at the Community Information Centre may be suspended for two weeks (dates not yet known) whilst major work is undertaken, quite rightly Health and Safety Regulations will not permit staff to work in a dangerous environment. Company vans and heavy equipment will appear in the car park during the build, so for public safety part of the car park will be fenced off. Harworth and Bircotes Town Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by this work, which by necessity means a reduction in the number of car parking spaces available, but the good news is that all this effort means that our Police will stay in our community.
HOW INCONVENIENT! There is a man who lives here and who sometimes appears on the radar in an ‘inebriated state’. He can be quite offensive and his language shocking. He complains because the public toilets are closed on Sundays. I don’t talk to drunks who shout at staff in the street, I find it pointless, but I do have a message for him: No, the toilets will not be open on Sundays. I suggest that if you can’t make it home from the pub without needing to relieve yourself, then make an appointment with your doctor – he might also be able to help you with your drinking, too.
LAND BEHIND GALWAY ROAD – MYSTERY SOLVED! Mr Gerald Cockrell contacted me and explained that he is responsible for clearing a small area of land behind Galway Road, done with permission from the landowner; the intention is simply to create a level and safe grassed area for local children to play on.
It was Mr Cockrell who paid for a J.C.B. to clear away not only vegetation but bags of household rubbish and old carpets that had been dumped there, attracting rats, and when I visited the site with Mr Cockrell it was obvious all the heavy work had been done; what is now needed is a bit more levelling and then grass seed. So, no skate park, no quad bikes tearing up the grass – just small children playing in relative safety.
PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS BY HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES COUNCIL The proposed move by the Police into Town Council premises indicates how times have changed; I have been a Town Councillor for 6 years and have seen so many changes, so I thought it worthwhile reminding you of some of some of the things achieved so far.

community it presented us with some challenges, but the end result was well worth the effort. And, thanks to U.K. Coal donating a piece of land we were able to incorporate the Sure Start building which is funded by Notts. County – this is a major asset for Harworth and Bircotes. • The purchase of the old rent office which we converted into a multi-service hub to ensure access to key services and which is now known as the Community Information Centre. This meant key services stayed available locally. • We have the best public toilets for miles around, though this took three years of hard talking with B.D.C. to achieve. • The new cemetery is prepared and ready, runners for headstones are now in place, and we estimate it will come into use towards the end of the year. • Over recent years we have spent time and money improving the condition of the old cemetery – new railings, seats, and other features have appeared, along with automatic gates and much improved toilets. The council would like all residents to know that the care of the cemetery is a primary concern of the Council, and we will continue to ensure there is no drop in standards. • We recently took on the management of a new balancing pond which receives surface water only.
Services • We have modernised the way staff work by buying them a vehicle and decent equipment,
given regular training and encouraged more of a team approach. • Many more litter/dog bins are now in place, which staff empty on a regular basis • In the Community Information Centre we have introduced the Credit Union staff, along with A1 Housing Services, Debt management staff and District Council staff. We also operate a Food Bank when required.
Improved Environment • We finally got individual attractive gateway signs for the five roads into Harworth and Bircotes, which give a clear and positive message to visitors about our community. • We put in place a decent recycling centre next to the Town Hall, plus new street furniture, planters and seats along Scrooby Road. • We now have interactive speed signs (yes, I know we need more) and new/extra bus shelters. • The paths either side of Styrrup Road leading from Harworth to Styrrup has been re-surfaced as far as our boundary, so parents pushing a buggy have less of an obstacle course to negotiate, and action has been taken to improve road safety in Old Harworth. • The cenotaph and the memorial stone at Harworth Crossroads have both been professionally cleaned. • The wiring of the large tree near the cenotaph in Old Harworth means that we now have two trees which are lit up at Christmas – we get lots of compliments on this, and each

year we set a few more bulbs in the grass verges of the roads leading into our community. • The planters along Scrooby Road and in other areas are now full of summer flowers, and the hanging baskets are in place, and what a difference this yearly action makes!
Sending the Right Message: That Harworth and Bircotes is a good place to live, and worthy of investment. At last Harworth and Bircotes is attracting the attention it deserves – the new ASDA store has been very successful, ALDI will be building here this year, new houses are starting to appear and more are planned. I know there is a long way to go in making other improvements- in fact the list keeps growing, but then, Rome wasn’t built in a day!
STOP PRESS! At last it has been confirmed that the start day for another supermarket on Scrooby Road is 7th July

A Bridge Too Far
You may have noticed that the responsibility for cutting grass verges alongside our roads has returned to Notts. County. The reason for this is that we found trying to cut the grass along 9 miles of verges was beyond the capability of our grass cutting machine. Health and Safety regulations also precludes us working on any road with a speed limit over 30 mph; this has proved impossible to overcome. Notts. C.C. perform this task throughout Nottinghamshire and has specialized equipment to cope with this work, and they also spray verges and roads with weed killer, which we are not authorised to do. However, they do not cut the verges as frequently as we tried to do, though we have asked for extra cuts. I shall watch with interest how well they do.
