the JANUARY 2014 edition

And so we welcome another year‌ 2014. I do hope that all readers have had an enjoyable Christmas, and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As I write this, there are still 2 weeks before the big day but I know that this time will fly past and I am determined to make time to enjoy all the things that make this time of year special. For me many of the school related activities will be the last ones, as my youngest will join her brother and sister at secondary school next September, so no more Christmas Fairs, nativity plays and school Christingle services that are part and parcel of the run up to Christmas at primary school. Maybe after 11 years of manning a tombola at a PTA Christmas Fair, I will get a year off next year! 2014 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. The February issues will be delivered to you from the 25th January. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th January.

Wishing you a Peaceful 2014 T

Best wishes, Paula x

The Local Shops Versus The Supermarket: Discuss I, like many of you living in this area, am an incomer. I have lived and worked here for over 20 years and my ‘children’ (now adults) consider themselves locals.

There are many parallels between the towns of Bawtry, Tickhill and Bircotes and the village I grew up in, for one - there were local shops aplenty. This is no longer the case with Woodbury, which is south of Exeter, and now a small town. The heart of the village, which was grazing, is now completely built on and every large garden has been in-filled, there might be a couple of working farms left, but they are no longer in the village centre, the population must have doubled, the doctors surgery expanded, (sound familiar?) but the shops have gone, as have the garage where Mr Miles made Morgan cars and the cabinet maker who made bespoke kitchens, along with the butcher and two grocers, their properties are all houses, there is a junk shop and a post office with skeleton food supplies, and the hardware store which is just hanging on because business values have slumped so much that they cannot sell it and retire. Everyone shops at the supermarkets in Exmouth which is a car journey away, or the nicer shops in Topsham which has managed to hold off the invasion of a superstore on its outskirts. I really value the family run local businesses in this area. Visitors can’t believe what we have, butchers, wet fish shops, veg shops, hardware and opticians, third generation grocers, florists, hairdressers and so on – you know what we have. They are all in business because of good quality, value, good service and local support. 4 4

I am moved to raise the flag and urge more support for our local shop keepers after an article in the Times (Saturday November 2013 News Section) headlined ‘Family shuns supermarkets for year and pockets £900’ basically the Pugh family, from Oxfordshire, decided to do their food shopping in their local shops and market and have reckoned that they are healthier, (lost weight) wealthier and eating better for it. They confounded their expectations by making a saving of £900, by avoiding the clever tempting special-offer marketing techniques of the big supermarkets and simply buying what they needed, buying ingredients and cooking from scratch. They also enjoyed the relationships that were built up with the local suppliers. Some things were dearer, but overall the savings made, more than made up for it. They cut their bill from a weekly £80 - £100 to just £34, and they are putting their savings into a jaunt to a foodie destination! I know there are some things that just cannot be supplied by the local shops - but it’s not a very long list – and we all have to use the bigger shops from time to time, but in my experience I have found that if you ask for an obscure cut of meat, a particular kind of fish, some specialist foodstuff that isn’t on the shelf then it will be supplied, saving time and fuel on a journey into town. Try doing that in one of the BigFour! And the real saving in all of this is the community. Money spent in Tesco, Asda and the other Big Guys disappears into the shareholders pockets (and with Asda these pockets are in the USA as it is owned by a subsidiary of WalMart) – whereas

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

money spent with the local guys is returned into the community and goes round and round… if you google this phenomenon there are countless economists arguing the maths, the statistics are compelling, one suggests that if you spend £10 in a local shop that sells stuff from local producers the amount of money that goes back into your local economy can be over £50 - it works like this: when you buy a locally-made cake from a local shop, a big part of your money is passed on to the local baker. The shop employs local staff, a local accountant, an electrician etc who spend some of their money at the local garage, the garage owner, who employs local staff buys sausages from the butcher and round and round it goes…. With each step, around 80% of each spend goes into the local economy. You will maintain what we have here which is so special and particular, keeping this a great place to live, maintaining property prices and keeping the area vibrant and busy, Butchers aren’t just for Christmas!

We had a fantastic evening for the Christmas Lighting Event with a good turn out from the community. We have never had as many stalls & helpers as we had this year, & the Tombola especially was very popular, as was the Face Painting for the children. In fact, all of the stalls did very well indeed. Santa paid us a visit, assisted by one of his Elves, & there were a lot of excited children who went to

Some of our members & friends are going to the Christmas Market in Durham on 6 Dec, probably hoping to do some Christmas shopping, or just to enjoy wandering around the beautiful City. At the time of writing we are all looking forward to our Christmas Lunch at Styrrup Golf Club on 18 Dec & the Pantomime Aladdin at Retford Majestic Theatre on 4 January. Everyone is busy preparing for the coming festivities, hoping that Santa can deliver his presents on time, but how nice it would be if we all could take a little time out to think about those who are not as fortunate as most of us are & wish them happiness this Christmastime. Doncaster Museum runs courses, and one I attend regularly is the monthly life drawing. For me, as practicing scales is for a musician. It hones ones craft, sharpens the observation and makes demands on ones drawing skills as no other situation can. The artist and the model are in a contract with each other until the end of the session, and it results in effort and concentration for the whole of that period of time that can be exhausting, but very rewarding. What one learns can be applied to every aspect of arts practice including abstract work, it’s about developing a personal visual language, composition and spacial awareness. So I really value the sessions because there is available good tuition which is a real rarity, and it is pitched to suit the complete beginner or the experienced artist. Each session is a challenge and as such becomes a reward. 2014 Sessions: 25 January, 22 February, 8 March and 12 April from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm £7.50 / £5 concession. 01302 734293, museum@doncaster.gov.uk

Garden View

A Shady Space

Light levels during January are low and the days are short, but now the winter solstice has passed, days are slowly lengthening. There are however, areas of the garden which never receive much sunlight, and these shady spaces are often the conversation starter when I speak to gardeners. A south facing garden is on the priority list of most house hunters, but in reality there must be around the same number of houses built on the dark side of the road! If you’re lucky enough to have a front and back garden, then you should have somewhere to grow the sun lovers, but it’s often a rear shady garden which causes most frustration. So what’s my answer? Embrace the shade! Shady spaces can be much more atmospheric than those open to full sun, they have a great earthy smell and can support a diverse range of plants and mosses. My suggestion is to layer the planting, so that it looks like the creation of shade is intentional. I would probably go as far as to erect a structure, such as a pergola or shade sail over the top, creating a cosy outdoor room, and use lighting to visually warm the space at night. 18 18

Your layering process begins with the boundaries. The first stage is to paint them black, and before you scream ‘BLACK?!’ out loud, hear me out. Painting the boundaries black will help them to fade into the background once plants mature. The second stage is to clothe the fences and walls with climbers. Although hated by some, Ivy is perfect for this, but other things to try are shade-tolerant Honeysuckles or wall shrubs such as Hydrangea petiolaris and Garrya elliptica. For additional flower colour, why not cram in a couple of Clematis? Introduce height with a small tree such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ or the evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei. Clump forming bamboo makes a great vertical accent, as does the banana Musa basjoo. Next in our ‘shade lasagne’ are the shrubs such as the purple leaved Acers, Viburnum tinus, Box (which can be clipped into shapes to add formality) and Sarcococca. Smaller perennials such as Astilbe, Aconitum and Hellebores provide colour and finally ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium scholopendrium supply wonderful glossy ground cover. So there you have it, a shady oasis, and as with most things in life, if

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

you fully embrace it, a north facing shady garden can be magical. T

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Priority 1 : Anti-Social Behavior Priority 2 : Vehicle Nuisance Priority 3 : Environmental Issues The Next Priority Setting Meeting will be held on Wednesday 8th January 2014 at 2pm at the Harworth Town Hall. Thursday January 9th 2014 (10am) at Harworth Parish Hall, Scrooby Road. Wednesday January 15th 2014 (4pm) at Library, Scrooby Road. T 20 20

Crime Activity in the area Nottinghamshire Police continue to run extra patrols in order to apprehend any one committing crime within the area. This continues to be successful and has already seen a reduction in Burglary and vehicle crime offences in the Town. Notts Police will continue with these patrols over the coming months. T

Criminal Damage and Anti-Social Behaviour in the area We are seeing a slight increase in Anti-Social Behaviour in the area involving windows being smashed along with general nuisance behaviour. Where offenders identified for such behaviour have links to a tenancy, then Notts Police will work closely with Partner Agencies and Landlords with a view to taking action against those tenants as a result of that ASB. This has been used to very good effect previously in the Town with both possession order and evictions having been secured. T

101 POLICE Non - Emergency Contact Number

There has been a recent enquiry from a member of public that the non-emergency number for Nottinghamshire Police of 101 is not the correct number for Nottinghamshire Police. I can reassure and confirm the public that the Non-emergency number for Nottinghamshire Police is 101. When you ring this number you are then transferred to an automated voice message which says Thank you

for calling 101 please select from the 2 following options for Nottinghamshire Police press 1 or for South Yorkshire Police press 2. To hear these options again press zero or press hash for the operator. Sometimes the options are press 1 for South Yorkshire Police or press 2 for Nottinghamshire Police. When you select the option you are then transferred to the control room of the force you selected. For clarification although Harworth and Bircotes has a South Yorkshire postcode the area is covered and Policed by Nottinghamshire Police. T

Tickhill Parish Room Ramblers Programme

First of all I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year for 2014!

Our regular classes and events will be continuing from the second week of January with the Nellie Stages School of Dance, WI and the Francophiles. Slimming World continues with a session 52 weeks of the year - so no Christmas Break for them. Our regular Saturday coffee mornings also continue for about 50 weeks of the year, depending

on when Christmas Day falls!

If you would like to book the Parish Room for your event - please ring me on 07840 419763 - I will be happy to show you round our lovely Grade II listed building. Our facilities are second to none and our rates are very reasonable. We’ve had no price increases since our refurbishment in 2008 - not many people can make that claim! Janice Birkinshaw. T

Tickhill & District Lions Club

May I start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held on 10th December. To the companies who donated prizes, the many people who provided items for the draw, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted

Santa on his new sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So, thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. T

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JANUARY 2014 2014 – Another Year Harworth and Bircotes Town Council hopes that this year brings everyone something to celebrate, be it another birthday, perhaps a win on the lottery, or maybe something of real value - good news from your doctor. I sometimes forget what the real priorities in my own life are, until some problem suddenly appears that can be life changing. I also often find myself so busy dealing with issues and challenging some decisions that I forget those I should appreciate more, such as my mum, my friends and colleagues, my excellent neighbours, and the people who say ‘Hello, June’ when I am out and about. Thank you.

Christmas Lighting Event I am pleased to report that the lighting event went very well. The tree looks wonderful, the children loved the fireworks and meeting Santa, and everyone enjoyed the carol singing. Have you noticed that every year a couple of new street lights are introduced so that gradually our display improves? Inside the Town Hall stall holders were kept busy; I bought a Christmas cake for staff working in the Finance Department at Bassetlaw District Council (my way of saying thank you for all their hard work) and I can honestly say it has gone down well! I understand there were a few moans about the closed car park- this was for Health and Safety reasons, and all who used the car park the previous week had leaflets left under their wipers notifying them. 24 24

So thank you to all the people of Harworth and Bircotes who supported the event and for demonstrating some community spirit.

Public Consultation Exercise During last December some of you walking along the shop fronts may have been approached by Bassetlaw planners stationed within the Indian Restaurant. They have asked me to thank you for your very positive comments and ideas on the proposals for our Neighbourhood Plan, which you may recall will serve as a blueprint for this Town in the future. Everyone agrees we need a petrol station and a bank!

Developments • Ground work behind the CoOperative store and behind Beverley Road is being carried out by the owner of the land. I understand a planning application to build was submitted almost three years ago; at the time of going to press I have no further information. I have contacted Planning at B.D.C. who were able to confirm that there is a conservation area in that area, a little further to the right of the land behind the Co-Op. • Some lighting columns along Scrooby Road have been tested and found to be unsafe.

They have therefore been removed, but will be replaced. • Windy weather had loosened one of the Christmas lights on one light column, this was addressed. I think we have been fortunate in that the very fierce winds last month caused only superficial damage, and we avoided any major disaster. • The Police hope to start building the extension to the Community Information Centre in March. It would be great to see P.C. Jim Martin back here. • Four new litter bins have been installed

Financial Pressure on Council Budgets Reductions in funding to County and District Councils will continue. I can tell you that Bassetlaw will manage to set a balanced budget for the next financial year 2014-15; however, during that year they will have to find more than £1million in savings in readiness for 2015-16. This has a knock-on effect, as various grants from District to Parish Councils have to be reduced accordingly; fortunately Harworth and Bircotes Town Council is a robust Council financially with a healthy contingency fund and services will continue to be delivered as normal.

community community Changes to Bus Services

Littering or fly tipping.

Those of you who use the bus services need to be aware that changes are being planned and that some services will be reduced across Bassetlaw. This is due to the financial pressures on Nottinghamshire County Council and their decision to review their subsidy to the bus companies.

Can I please ask that if a litter problem is causing you any concern that you telephone the Town Council on 01302 759037 and report the problem IMMEDIATELY.

We understand that no final decisions have been made but it seems that 2 services affecting our Town – 21 and 25 - are under scrutiny. If you want to find out more about the proposed service changes, contact the Customer Service Centre on 0300 500 80 80 A public consultation called ‘Have Your Say’ is currently underway, ending 17th January; you can make comments online at localbusservices. consultation@nottscc.gov.uk

To Make You Smile

There is little or no point raising the matter four weeks later at a T&RA or Town Council meeting for example. The Town Council is responsible for over 10 miles of footpaths and snickets and is paid just over £5,000 per annum (or 100.00 per week) by Bassetlaw DC for providing this service. A photograph showing a single fly tipping incident which the staff routinely have to deal with - if you have any information relating to who is doing this please ring 01909 533533 (Environmental Health) and give them details (this can be done anonymously!) Fixed penalty notices of £80.00 will be sent to anyone caught fly tipping or littering.

Disputes relating to private land or unadopted roads. Often my Councillors are approached about resolving issues relating to inconsiderate parking or dog fouling on private land. For example The football pitches and cricket square on Scrooby Road are cared for by Trustees. If you wish to report fly tipping or dog fouling or littering in this area you need to approach one of the Trustees at the Sports Pavilion. Droversdale Wood is owned by UK Coal and again fly tipping should be reported to that organisation. Scrooby Close is an unadopted road and it is confirmed that as private land the Town, District or County have no authority to take any action relating to inconsiderate parking there.

I worked as a health visitor in Doncaster in the eighties and unusual names for new babies were a rarity, unlike today. I remember visiting one very young new mother who I had got to know well during her visits to the antenatal clinic; she had given birth to a beautiful baby boy. “What are you going to call him”? I asked. “Devon” she replied. I looked at her in surprise, so she clarified the name for me. “You know, Devon – as in Cornwall!” Harworth and Bircotes Town Council wishes you all a Happy New Year.
