Wthe FEBRUARY 2014 edition
I hope that everyone has had a great start to 2014. For me, Christmas already seems an awful long time ago. But then as I was working on the Christmas magazine back in October and November, and by the time you receive this issue I will be working on Mother’s Day and Easter! There does appear to be a lot to look forward to in 2014 as I keep hearing about events across the area that I will endeavour to bring you more details of over the coming months. If you are in contact with the organisers of any of these events then do ask them to get in touch so that we can ensure they get some promotion. There are now 5 magazines that make up the ‘Today Publications’ selection. Tickhill Today will be celebrating its 9th birthday next month and Rossington Today its 8th birthday. Bawtry Today will be 7 this summer and Harworth and Bircotes Today is nearly 3! So before Christmas we launched Bessacarr & Cantley Today which over the course of 2 months reaches 9000 homes. If anyone knows of anyone who might find this magazine (or any of the Today Publications) useful – whether they be a business owner or involved with a local group, school or charity then please do encourage them to get in touch. The March issues will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th February. Apologies if this sounds very early – but it is the 2nd Friday as normal – but the dates of many months this year seem to make this date fall very early in the month!
Enjoy February and I will back in a months’ time with your March magazine! T
Best wishes, Paula x

Surplus Food: One Solution Last month I wrote about the economic good sense of shopping locally rather than in supermarkets, this article looks at food waste.
It’s not a secret that there have been food mountains for years, milk and wine mountains were the talk of my childhood. Producers and retailers have to come up with cunning ways to use up the stuff and get it into our store cupboards. Back in the 1960s we hardly knew about yogurt and now in any supermarket there is a plethora of milk based puddings to choose from in the chiller and you find milk and whey in virtually every item of the supermarket shelves. I can’t help thinking, after catering for a load of guests over the Christmas period, what an impossible task it must be second guessing the quantities of which individual foodstuffs will be needed to be grown and marketed by the whole of the UK. Hannah Stoddart from Oxfam’s GROW campaign, speaking on Radio 4s Shared Planet ( 31.12.2013) stated that there is enough food production in the world to feed everyone. But the statistics are harsh, many go hungry whilst many throw away what they cannot eat. There are lots of figures washing around, but this is a shocking one: Up to 50% of all food produced never reaches a human stomach. The causes are many fold some of which are poor infrastructure, poor forecasting by the supermarkets, damaged packaging, inadequate storage facilities and overstocking, the demand for super-market perfect fruit and veg: (30% of vegetable crops grown in the UK are never harvested because of these standards) silly sell-by dates, silly use-by dates and all those BOGOF’s that mean we 4 4
over buy and chuck. Up to half the food bought in the USA and Europe is thrown away by the consumer - it goes into landfill. This is such a shocking statistic that I can hardly believe it, I feel like sticking my hand up saying ‘well, it’s not me’ and I only hope that they are counting the potato peelings and pork chop bones. Issues around waste reduction with regard to Landfill are a whole other story. There are enormous issues around the use of chemical fertilizer, fungicide and insecticide order to increase production, GM foodstuffs, water use and land use. The supermarkets compound the problems by competitive profit focus rather than on a sustainable service to feed the population. And food poverty is not just a third world issue. It’s very real in this country with many working families living below the accepted poverty line – 6.7 million, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and coupled with this, obesity is a growing problem. In early December, in Goldthorpe the first pilot social supermarket opened. Community Shop, the company behind this, will provide chosen shoppers on the cusp of food poverty with access to surplus food at up to 70% discount on normal prices. The aim of this project is to match surplus food with social need. To be eligible one must be on welfare support in that area. Not only will they be able to access cheaper foods – which incidentally are not over the sell-by dates, but also on offer will be cookery skills, home budgeting, debt advice, CV writing etc.
HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY
Membership will be for a limited time only. The launch of this supermarket is supported by Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, M&S, Ocado and others. I can’t help wondering that some weeks there will only be tinned pears, baked beans and mincepies on the shelves, and that the cookery-skills-instructors will have a task akin to Ready-Steady-Cook on their hands. But of course I don’t know what all those warehouses of overstocked items really look like, and am sure that this shop will have a pretty well rounded stock of items. When the Goldthorpe shop has proved a success, (and how can it not?) Then many other shops will open including in London. The brains behind this idea should be applauded for their drive to make this happen, ending the misery of food poverty in the UK. It’s not a new idea, it has been tried and tested in Europe, but it is new here. Excess food will go where it is most needed rather than Landfill Statistics from Joseph Rowntree foundation, Oxfam and Institute of Mechanical Engineers

Forthcoming Harworth events at neighbourhood Phoenix Theatre plan progressing Music Live at the PhoenixSaturday February 1st
The Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group have been progressing with the Harworth & Bircotes Neighbourhood Plan over the past couple of months. The group have carried out several public consultation events which include: • Planning over a pint sessions in the Blacksmith Arms and in the Pavilion • Attending local schools to discuss with the children what they would like to see happen to the Town over the next 16 years. • Working with young people at the Youth centre • Business and landowner information sessions • A residents information session • Hiring the Paradise Shop frontage the first week in December • Attendance at the Christmas lights switch on During these sessions local residents, landowners and business have been asked the following: ‘How can Harworth & Bircotes be improved over the next 16 years and how can planning deliver this?’ A few common themes have evolved from these discussions, 10 10
such as: the need to redevelop the old colliery site with a mix of different uses such as employment, housing and leisure facilities; create new cycle routes around the town, improve the open spaces and play areas, improve facilities for young people, expand the range of shops in the town centre and protect important community infrastructure and environmental assets. The Steering Group (made up of local residents and key stakeholders) are starting to draft the Neighbourhood Plan to incorporate the ideas and recommendations made by the local community. It is anticipated that the draft plan will be available for public consideration in March 2014. It is vital that local residents have an input into the plan and agree its content as you will need to vote the plan in by local referendum to make it planning law. Once the plan has been made this will mean that local people will have a greater say on new housing, employment, leisure and retail development in the future. If you wish to make comments on the Neighbourhood Plan or you would like to join the Steering Group please contact Steve Bowman on 01302 752642 or visit the Neighbourhood Planning website for more information http://harworthandbircotesnp. weebly.com/ T

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill & Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health & healthcare) Some interesting statistics This medical practice has roughly 9200 patients of which two thirds are registered at Tickhill and one third at The Colliery Practice. In 2013 about 1885 appointments were booked but NOT ATTENDED. Not surprisingly the number not attended at each site reflects the number of patients on role. The number of booked but not attended appointments for each month, averages about 100 for Tickhill and 50 for The Colliery. Divide that by the number of working days in a month, of 22, and it is hardly surprising that we cannot always get an appointment at a time convenient to us. If we really need an appointment The Practice will always try to fit us in – although this may, at 14 14

Talking of ‘A and E’, the average number of trips to A and E per month, by patients in this Practice is 200. All these are reviewed and of these an average of 27 are rated as cases which are more suitable for a visit to a GP. Care for Cats Sue Clarke together with a small but dedicated group of volunteers takes in unwanted cats from across Nottinghamshire.”Our aim is to provide every cat in our care with as happy a rescue experience as possible and to give them the best start possible in their new homes” explained Sue.
To this end, Care for Cats do not house the cats in a rescue centre, but look after them in small numbers in foster homes. “We ask for a minimum donation of £50.00 for every cat or kitten we home, which is exceptional value for money ! Every kitten is thoroughly health checked, has been tested for Feline Aids and Leukaemia, has been treated for fleas and worms and is triple vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. Obviously, there is often a massive shortfall between the donation given and the cost of treatment so fund raising is an essential part of our work”. The group is always looking out for suitable “forever” homes for their cats - homes where the high standard of care initially set by the rescue is continued. If you are interested in becoming one of those homes or would like to support the work of Care for Cats by providing good quality bric-a-brac, books etc please contact the following numbers. On Saturday 15th March there will be a Charity Auction at Everton Village Hall at 2pm. We are looking for items to auction so please let 16 16
us know if you have anything. Also please come along to support Care for Cats on the day. Sue Clarke 07984 883583 Ken and Margaret Atkinson 01777 704555 Mary Winder 01777 816328 T
Are you too old for love at 80 ? Can you fall in love at 80 or is it too late? What on earth will your family think? And are there too many memories and secrets to make it possible? Everton Village Players explore these questions in their latest production, a beautiful romantic comedy called “The Last Romance” by Tony Award Winning American playwright Joe DiPietro.
On an ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph decides to take a different path on his daily walk, one that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love. Ralph a cheeky flirty chap meets the elegant and reserved Carol as they walk their dogs in the park. To Carol’s surprise, they fall in love, much to the dismay of Rose, Ralph’s bitter and jealous sister. This leads to some surprising and dramatic twists.

An interesting feature of the play is “young Ralph”, a wannabe opera singer with a beautiful voice. Operatic selections are used throughout the story, and they work wonderfully. This is a tale that mixes heartbreak with humour, and the central message about seizing life with a passion comes through loud and clear; a golden-years love story that casts a bewitching spell about the power of love at whatever age. Due to growing demand for their productions, The Everton Village Players are putting on an extra night with a discounted ticket. Please ask for information when you call to book your tickets. “The Last Romance” will be performed at Everton Village Hall from 18th – 22nd February at 7.30. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01777 817275 or visit www.evertonvillageplayers. co.uk to book on line. T

Garden View
By February Christmas can seem like a distant memory: toys and games which were desired for months beforehand, are now no longer new. I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering how the excitement of a new toy soon faded, but for me the big box in which it was wrapped provided entertainment for a much greater length of time because it could be turned into a car, a bus, a den or a robot. Recently I was asked to apply this theory when designing a family garden: a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a big blue climbing frame; a bright red slide, or a plastic swing. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can ‘accidentally’ find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds. Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud (surely you must have made mud pies or sloppy dosh when you were a child – for those who didn’t its mud and water mixed in a bucket or bowl with a stick then left to harden in the sun). Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. I 18 18
A place to explore & create love to see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, but has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; paths to race bikes on; washing line poles to climb, and a small bridge to cross when escaping from trolls…the usual thing! Parents also often ask about child-friendly plants, and it’s a tricky question to provide a quick answer for. There are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly to very toxic, but statistically (research shows) that the number of deaths is tiny. The vast majority taste so disgusting that your child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!). Foxgloves, fungi and Delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include Daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of Rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful,

but we still grow them in schools. I think garden education at a young age is the key, and given most under 3’s won’t be outside alone in the garden it shouldn’t be a problem … anyway, they’ll be too busy playing to eat the plants!. T
Until next time, happy gardening ,

We are continuing to have incidents of Anti Social Behaviour and Criminal Damage reported in the area involving walls being pushed or kicked over along with general nuisance behaviour. Once again we would stress that where offenders identified for such behaviour have links to a tenancy, then Notts Police will work closely with Partner Agencies and Landlords with a view to taking action against those tenants as a result of that ASB. This has been used to very good effect previously in the Town with both possession orders and evictions
Local Priorities Identified
From the Priority Setting Meeting held on January 8th 2014 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :Priority 1 : Anti Social Behaviour Priority 2 : Environmental Issues Priority 3 : Criminal Damage The Next Priority Setting Meeting will be held on Thursday 3rd April 2014 at 2pm at the Harworth Town Hall. Whilst we are currently working on leads relating to this behaviour we would urge parents to support us where possible by being aware of where your children are and who they are hanging around with when they are out and about in the area. But also to report to us any concerns or information you may have in relation to these current incidents. T
Shed Breaks As usual we are asking people to secure belongings which are stored inside sheds as much as possible and also to have a good quality padlock fitted. To further enhance security we would ask people to consider security lighting close to their sheds in particular the door area. Also to ensure that nothing is visible from outside for example if you have a shed with a window maybe think about putting a curtain or sheet up that will cover this so the contents are not on display. Shed alarms are also something to consider and if you require any further information please make contact with your local PCSO. T
Quad Bikes in the area There have been a number of incidents in recent months where quad bikes have been used in and around the area. In response to this plans are being put in place to trace the drivers and owners of these vehicles. If anyone has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is

Crime Activity in the area All crime in Harworth and Bircotes is currently (as of 8th Jan 2014) showing a reduction of 12.9% against the same period (1st April to 7th Jan) in 2012/13 compared with 2013/14. Despite this positive trend, Nottinghamshire Police continue to run extra patrols in order to apprehend any one committing crime within the area. This continues to be successful and has already seen a reduction in Burglary and vehicle crime oences in the Town. Notts Police will continue with these patrols over the coming months. T

There has been a recent enquiry from a member of public that the non emergency number for Nottinghamshire Police of 101 is not the correct number for Nottinghamshire Police. Rossington history group For the past nine months Rossington History Group, led by two new members, has been researching possible sites of archaeological interest around the village. Working with Doncaster Museum and the South Yorkshire Archaeological Service the group have identified a number of sites that more than likely pre date the establishment of the Roman settlement in Doncaster. As the information that had come to light was so exciting the History Group decided to form a specialist sub group that would be able to concentrate its eorts in this particular part of history of Rossington and the surrounding area. This sub group, The Rossington Archaeological Field Team (R.A.F.T.), decided to prepare an application bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund organisation and the structure of the bid has developed in a way that will eventually involve the wider community, voluntary groups, schools and individuals in what is likely to be a three year project. These are just a few of the items already found around the Rossington area and are now on display in Doncaster Museum. R.A.F.T has evidence that there is a lot more waiting to be discovered.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - FEBRUARY 2014 In The Bleak Midwinter … I hate February. I think it must be the cumulative effect of reduced daylight, bad weather and low temperatures causing my outlook on life to become somewhat negative and gloomy. For your Town Councillors, it is also that time of year when budgets for the next financial year are set, and when affordability is the main consideration for any plans we may have for the community. The state of the economy and Government cuts to Council grants means that we will have less money in the pot than in recent years, but H&B Town Council will not be raising the Precept; instead we will have to rethink our priorities and look for further efficiencies. Budget Pressures: Bassetlaw has to operate with £1.2m less this next financial year, and we know that there will be another similar cut for 2015/16. In the last few years Bassetlaw District Council has lost £8m in income/ Government funding. So life will get harder on the financial front, and inevitably this lack of money at District Council level affects Parish and Town Councils. For me, as a District Councillor and as the Cabinet Member for Finance, it means a lot of work and making difficult decisions, as I and the Finance team at District struggle to allocate less available funds in the fairest way. February is the month when the bad financial news is given, when Parish Councils and District service managers learn what their new 24 24
budgets will be, and inevitably, the time when the finger of blame is then pointed. I am the one who stands in the District Council Chamber and delivers the budget for the next year; this means speaking for 30-45 minutes as I work my way through any changes and reductions to the various pots that make up the total District Council Budget. This ordeal is followed by a debate which can become very political and aggressive, quite emotional and heated at times, and when I have to defend the decisions taken. Why do I do it? I frequently ask myself that question …. possibly it is because my background as a nurse and then as a senior manager in the NHS instilled into me a strong sense of duty and responsibility, or maybe it’s simply that I am the only person stupid enough to take on the job. The real culprit is Councillor Frank Hart, who persuaded me to become a councillor in the first place!
Another Year, New Opportunities, New Challenges? What, I wonder, will this year bring to the people of Harworth and Bircotes?
see new houses being built – already we can see this happening on Scrooby Road, and Persimmon have said they want to start building this year at the top of Bawtry Road. Bassetlaw District Council has submitted plans for the replacement homes for those living in Airey houses; once approved work will start in earnest. • Commerce. We believe a new supermarket will appear, and hopefully a petrol station at Asda. • Events. We hope to see the introduction of the Tommy Simpson Bike Ride in July.
And The Challenges? These, I believe, relate to getting a better infrastructure in the future to support the growth of our community – better traffic management, drainage, and in time, new primary school arrangements. We have to start raising our concerns with County Council now, put their focus on our Town and our future needs, and become somewhat forceful in getting the attention we need at County level.
• Building. We can expect to

And For Harworth & Bircotes Town Council? Finance. This will be an issue; I estimate that our income will be reduced by almost 25% this next financial year as a direct result of continuing Government cuts to council budgets, and consequently we have to prioritise developments accordingly:1. The Police Service. We should see an extension built to the rear of the Community Information Centre and the transfer of the Police Service into the building. Costs for this work will be paid for by Nottinghamshire Police. It does mean we will have to do a little internal reconfiguration to accommodate all services using the building, and I understand Police vehicles will use the parking spaces opposite the Recycling Centre. 2. The Car Park. This will be re-surfaced following the building work for the Police. 3. Snipe Park Wood. Ownership will transfer to H&B from District, but at no significant cost; the intention is to draw up a business plan, apply to various funds and then start to implement an improvement programme. 4. Building on the Tommy Simpson Field – we are hopeful that this will become our responsibility, to be developed for the benefit of the community. Work will continue on the Neighbourhood Plan.
Lighting Due to the ongoing strong winds
in December and January, two of the Christmas light brackets snapped off and had to be removed. This was followed by a power failure lasting two weeks along part of Scrooby Road. Although street lighting was restored, you will have noticed that more street lights have been removed for Health and Safety reasons. We have asked the company who fit our Christmas lights to find stronger brackets for next year.
The Cemetery • A new notice board is now in place; I hope regular visitors take time to read the notices. • Brass plaques originally placed on benches are now secured to polished wood runners fitted inside the cemetery shelter; this was felt to offer some protection from the elements, and space has been left for more. • C.C.T.V. has been installed at the cemetery, along with automatically opening/closing gates. This is in readiness for when we start to use the new cemetery - cemetery staff can’t be in two places at the same time; automatic gates means cemetery personnel don’t have to open/shut the gates 365 days per week, and the cameras are for improved safety against theft, vandalism and other criminal activity, which we have encountered in the past.
The Idiot Factor Every community has a few idiots, but the latest events raise real concerns. Who was it who ripped out a live gas boiler from an empty house and left the gas supply pumping out? This act of stupidity happened early one January morning. The Police were on the point
DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3600 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk
of evacuating surrounding houses when Transco arrived and made the situation safe. The real concern is not just that we have a thief living in our midst, but a thief who is prepared to endanger the lives of other people. How thick can you get! And who was stupid enough to throw blister packs of prescribed tablets into the hedgerow in the snicket connecting Festival Avenue with Bawtry Road? The pharmacist confirmed these particular drugs were dangerous if found and eaten by children; I don’t need to tell you about the consequences if this had happened, but I do know the person responsible would be facing criminal charges. Has that guilty person no sense of responsibility at all? Thanks go to Helen Rogers, who left her house and her evening meal to remove and then dispose of the tablets.
Parking Illegally Sometime this year Nottinghamshire County Council will be erecting bollards along the shop fronts to stop inconsiderate motorists parking on pavements, and at times undertaking dangerous and illegal manoeuvers e.g. reversing the wrong way around a roundabout or forcing pedestrians onto the road to get round vehicles. A number of pedestrians have had near misses, and suffered verbal abuse when protesting. Many requests have been made to drivers to use the free car park but some are just too lazy to walk the few yards to a shop. Delivery van drivers can use the service road at the rear of the shops but most can’t be bothered. To these drivers: you have been warned about illegally parking on pavements and double

community yellow lines; now Notts. County Council is to take action.
To Make You Smile Recently we have had a few irate residents come into the Community Information Centre, asking to speak to the Town Clerk Steve Bowman. Steve: ‘How can I help you, sir?’ Resident: ‘I’ve just been given a parking ticket. You’re the one who deals with this, aren’t you?’
