Welcome

to the SEPTEMBER 2013 edition

of Harworth & Bircotes Today.

september has come around already! actually at the time of writing we are barely into august, however, in line with my declaration that i would be taking some time off this summer to spend with my family while they still have long summer holidays, the september magazines were packed off to the printers early august and our suitcases were packed for our holiday in spain!

Cherishing special times is a bit of an art though. It’s so easy to get embroiled with practical life stuff that the fun things can get overlooked and before you know it you’ve blinked and they’re back at school in shiny new shoes and cardies that are too big. So as the nights start to close in why not resolve to have some family time – whether you still feel frazzled from the school holidays or whether you are child-free, have a think about those close to you and book in some time to just ‘be’. And whilst you’re at it, check out all of our wonderful advertisers. A bit like a new school uniform that takes time to grow into, our magazine is always evolving but also has much that is familiar too! The october magazines will be delivered from 27th september and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 13th september.

community When your family first comes to our sanctuary looking for a new companion it can be a little daunting as there are so many lovely potential pets to choose from. We try to make it a little easier by asking you to take a look around and see which dog you are attracted to, and look at the information provided to see if it ticks the boxes with your family and lifestyle. When you find a dog that you feel is right, you can take the dog into our paddock or for a walk for you both to get to know one another a little. This soon identifies if you are going to gel with your chosen dog. sometimes this will require more than one visit and we welcome someone taking their time to get it right. as with a cat you can be left to interact with your chosen pet and Penny our cattery manager will be on hand to assist you.

Peoftthe

When you feel all is well and you have chosen your pet we ask that you complete a Home Visit form, this identifies a little about you and your garden. We ask that your fence is 5/6 ft high and you have locks on your gate. (Dog stealing is rife) A volunteer will then carry out a Home Visit, see where the dog will sleep and have a general chat (we do not let any of our dogs live outside). When all is well we would ask that you attend our induction course which is run by some very experienced dog trainers. There is time at the end of the session to ask questions and generally get the feel that you will be confident with the new addition to your family. We will be happy to give any advice that you may require. Each dog is an individual and some will take longer than others to feel at home and settle. But remember we will always be there for any advice 4 4

or problems even after you have taken home the new member of your family. For the Sanctuary to survive we have to ask for a minimum donation this is NOT to buy the dog it is to make sure we are still here in years to come helping even more dogs and cats get through traumas and horrors that some humans inflict on them. It costs us £600 per day for our Sanctuary to stay open. Remember your chosen pet will also be neutered, chipped, wormed, flea’ d and inoculated before it goes home. We desperately need a gardener for the Sanctuary just a few hours a week on a voluntary basis. Also does anyone out there enjoy sewing and have a few hours to spare making our dog beds? We can provide quilts etc. We need to stock pile them for the cold winter months. Please come along with your family to look at our Sanctuary that we are so proud of.

Guinness Hello i’m Guinness, i came to Mayflower as i was found as a stray. i am a very loving lad and although my carers don’t know much about my history they can see that i’m used to being around someone, as i get very upset when i am left alone, which means i need a home where i am not left on my own much and can slowly be taught to get over my separation anxiety. i love to go on long walks and to play with toys so an active lifestyle would suit me fine . i’m not great around small fluff y things, but this is probably due to my breeds natural instincts coming out. if you would like to know anymore please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

New Season

finally underway

We are delighted to have the 2013-2014 season finally under way, at the time of writing the 1st team have begun and with such a busy pre-season for the club we can now look forward and enjoy the football. Both the reserves and the 3rd team will kick their season o this month as will the Juniors so we wish them all the very best of luck. The club has been working hard for the last 3-4 years with fundraising, and in the past few months we have seen the money raised ploughed back into improving our facilities. We are delighted to have the Canteen finally on the ground and haved named this Toms Tearoom in memory of one of the greatest servants at the Club Tom Brogan, this will be used for hospitality for oďŹƒcials and opposition as well our own supporters and any moneies

raised will be going straight back into the club. We have also put in more hard standing around the Ground, this is a standard requirement if we want to progress to the NCEL, this has meant for a very busy time for all and I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank Neil at Clay Lane Construction and Jamie Roberts and J&M Property Solutions for their incredible hard work having it completed before the Season started. We hope people see that we are always looking to improve and we can get more of you through the gate as this is something that we cannot dictate except look to make the experience a better one for all & that is what we are striving to do. Also a big thank you to Lee and Craig Hellewell at Signify signmakers

for donating the new notice boards, these and the work mentioned really have improved the aesthetics and the new board will have all the forthcoming fixtures on so no excuses for not knowing. T

i am trying to trace any news or images of my grandad Mr Thomas armstrong born 5th February 1910 and died in June 1986. He served in the 8th Belfast Haa from 1928 until 1952. He was originally born in south shields and in 1933 married my grandma Miss elsie asher in Bourne Lincs. They moved to spondon in derby and had three children alan, shelia and ronald (my father). My grandad returned from Burma in 1946. In 1950 he separated from my grandma and went to live with his sister’s family at 12 Milne Avenue Bircotes, where he remained until he died in Worksop Hospital in June 1986. He was a surface colliery worker at Harworth. I would be extremely grateful if any residents knew anything about my grandad or had a photograph. I have researched his army records and he had an exemplary record but I just do not have a photo of him. My grandma died many years ago but nobody in her family has any photos of him either. I hope you can help me in my quest. Wendy Burridge (nee armstrong) wendy.burridge@btopen world.com. T

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Planning to Plant Last month i wrote about garden design, and how to decide on which style you would like to choose for your own garden, and more importantly whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. as promised, in this month’s article we’re focusing on softening the design with planting. Well-designed gardens are a successful blend of hard and soft landscaping (e.g. paving and plants), but not until recently did it occur to me how you can achieve a great effect with very little in terms of hard landscaping. Whether you are thinking about a new garden, total re-design, or just want to refresh a single border, it is important to draw yourself a planting plan. It’s not as scary as it sounds, and is really just like a large ‘paint by numbers’. A plan will avoid expensive mistakes made by impulse purchases, and will reduce maintenance in the long term. The resulting garden will also look so

much fuller, the plants much happier and healthier, and you will feel proud of your creation instead of frustrated with your lack of ability. First of all, begin by enlisting the help of a gardening friend (or passerby) with a tape measure, and get a blueprint of what is there now. Measure the boundaries of the borders - note any trees and hedges, fences and walls, shady spots, and those in full sun too. If you know which way the sun moves around the garden you will have much more success in choosing the right plants. Draw the plan on paper, ideally to scale. 1:50 is a good size for the average garden (where 50cm in reality is 1cm on paper). Then, using a selection of larger and smaller coins to draw around, fill the border with circles, starting at the rear of the border with the large shrubs, and work

TOP TIPS

Jobs to do this month include: september is a great time to plant, but here are some other jobs you can do at this time of the year:  Clip hedges for the final time this year.  Sow lawn seed to thicken 18 18

towards the front with herbaceous perennials and annuals. You can then layer bulbs in for extra spring and summer colour. Think about colour, the times of year they flower and the eventual size they will grow too. It’s a good idea to arm yourself with a good plant book, or simply search the internet for inspiration. T

or establish a new lawn. Sow the last batch of lettuce. Plant some potatoes in the greenhouse for Christmas. Net ponds to prevent leaves falling into it.

Kendra JACOB leaves force PCso9634 Kendra JaCoB has now left Nottinghamshire Police, where her last working day was Tuesday 16th July 2013. PCso4716 Claire WaLKer will be replacing Kendra and has joined the Harworth Neighbourhood Policing team this week. on behalf of everyone at Nottinghamshire Police and in particular the Neighbourhood Team at Harworth i wish to pass on my thanks and best wishes to Kendra for the future, i am sure she will be greatly missed by all her colleagues, the residents of Harworth and Bircotes and other partner agencies. PCSO Claire WALKER has been working for Nottinghamshire Police

for approximately 3 years where she used to cover the Tuxford area. I’m sure you will all join me in

welcoming Claire to the Harworth Neighbourhood Policing Team. T

Be Aware of Money Scams

in recent weeks a number of offences have been reported across the county, where a group of foreign speaking nationals, have entered businesses and by creating confusion and disorientation, have deceived cashiers into handing over sums of cash.in one instance a shopper was approached in the car park and had their credit card removed which was later used in a fraudulent attempt to obtain goods and services. Please be on your guard whilst out

shopping keeping all wallets and purses securely fastened and out of view, do not keep pin numbers with the card. If you are a retailer, take extra special care when exchanging cash; count all notes in the presence of the customer before replacing them in the till. If you believe you have been a victim to this type of scam, inform your local Police station by dialing 101 or in emergency dial 999. T

Dangers of Playing in Farmers Fields

i have been asked by local farmers to highlight the dangers of playing on hay bales in fields around the Harworth and Bircotes area. On July 27th at around lunchtime a local farmer spotted 4 teenagers on some Hay bales stacked in their field which also had a Bull grazing in the field. I’m sure you are aware Bulls are unpredictable and can be quite dangerous. The 4 teenagers were sat on top of the haylage bales that were stacked 2 high, I have been told they are like this to create a Corale area so that the vets can safely TB test the cows without the vet being attacked by the bull. Therefore the haylage bales are unstable and not safe for children to be on. Unfortunately when the farmer challenged the teenagers they did not respond

to the advice or the fact they were trespassing and refused to leave saying “We can sit on the bales if we want to”. The teenagers eventually left but they were very fortunate that the Bull was at the top end of the field as the farmer had genuine concerns that there could have been 4 deaths or serious injuries. I would like to stress that unless you have permission to enter or play in a farmers field you will be trespassing, which you can be prosecuted by the land owner. If you did have permission this would have to be written and kept on you at all times much like if you had permission to go shooting or pest control on farmers land. I am appealing to parents and guardians to distribute this message to teenagers in the area to warn them of the dangers of playing in farmers fields they are not playgrounds! T

Tickhill & District Lions Club it having come to light that the Family Fun day at The oak on the day of the scarecrow Festival was in aid of ‘Help the Heroes’ we have donated the proceeds of our coconut shy to the charity.

Pit Ambulance i wonder if anyone out there has a picture of the Pit ambulance? It was around from 1975 and into the 80s. It was regular in the galas. But I haven’t yet found a photo from this time. If anyone has a photo could we scan it at the library or my home? £5.000 plus has been spent renovating, including a new wooden frame and interior. I have taken further pictures into the library of the work that has been done if anyone is interested. The Police sign on the side was

from an appearance in Red Riding a Channel 4 Police Drama.

Ten Lions attended the funeral of former Lion Ted Elliott, providing a guard of honour at St Mary’s Church as his coffin was taken in and out of church. The church was full of friends wishing to celebrate the life of a wellrespected supporter of ‘Tickhill Life’ and our Lions Club was honoured to have been chosen by Ted’s family to receive donations. Thank you Ann. After thirty years of assembling wooden panels, decorated by the late Henry Bletcher, on to a farm trailer loaned to us by the Foers family to create our Christmas float, we have for some weeks been building a new float based on a caravan chassis. Work is progressing well and the new float will benefit from the latest available LED lights and electrics. We are indebted to Lions Ken Garner and Ken Green for their efforts.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2013 Local Authority Mortgage Scheme

Harworth Cemetery

i can now confirm the launch date is 3rd september 2013.

Walking round the cemetery, i noticed the work done to improve the older neglected graves. Whilst i was there, one gentleman approached the staff and complimented them on the cemetery appearance, so recognition at last.

B.d.C. is working in partnership with Lloyds Bank, and the scheme is called ‘Lend a Hand’; as you know it is for first time buyers. You can ask for an application form from any Lloyds branch in Bassetlaw, and you can also get more information from Customer services at Bassetlaw district Council (01909 533533).

Path found whilst Clearing the Land Have you noticed that the small piece of land opposite asda has been cleared of rubbish and the grass cut? The rubbish buried in the grass filled two small skips and guess what? – hidden by the grass for many years we found a path. This clearance work was done by H&B Town Council; although technically the land is owned by UK Coal, it is planned that ownership will be transferred to this Council. We know some residents have asked for this land to be used as a memorial to miners killed at Harworth Colliery, so if you have any ideas on design, please let us know.

Road Sweeping - 3 sweeps i have met with Bassetlaw district Council about this issue; B.d.C. tells me our community is entitled to three sweeps a year, which includes all adopted roads in our community. i am assured the next sweep will be in september. 24 24

Dumping it seems that Harworth and Bircotes is viewed by some as the ideal place to dump their rubbish. armchairs, mattresses, settees, large pieces of cardboard, and builders rubbish – all are conveniently left for you and me to dispose of – and to pay for - the removal of someone else’s rubbish. Fields, lanes, woods - are all used by irresponsible people who have no thought about the impact this has on our community; even the un-adopted road behind the shops on scrooby road is seen as a convenient dumping ground. Many of these sites are privately owned e.g. droversdale Wood belongs to U.K. Coal, so the removal of this rubbish is technically the responsibility of the landowner. Who are these selfish miscreants who are happy to break the law at our expense? i believe they should be named and shamed. i am happy to report that one resident has been identified and

issued with a fixed penalty notice; let’s get the rest of them and stop this disgusting behaviour.

Beech Road it beggars belief that someone keeps stealing plants from the planter on Beech road. Why do this? surely no adult would be this stupid, and if a child, i have to wonder what kind of life some kids have nowadays – are they so bored that their main pleasure lies in vandalising a simple plant arrangement? are they the same children who steal waste bins and set fire to them, and who get pleasure in setting fire to local woods?

Understanding Who Does What : different Councils and responsibilities it is the policy of this Council to investigate every complaint and meet with/give feedback to the complainant, and what we often find is that the issue raised by a ‘disgusted resident’ is the responsibility of either County or district Council. so to help everyone, here is a short list of who does what.

Grass Cutting – on verges along streets within the Town

The Cemeteries – on Tickhill road and styrrup road

The Public Toilets, Town Hall and Community information Centre

The Public realm – items such as hanging baskets and planters

The Town Clerk is accessible the same hours as Basssetlaw district Council and operates from the Community information Centre; you can also leave a message on 01302 752642.

Moaners Corner did you know that everything in Harworth and Bircotes is ‘disgusting’?–this is the word that accompanies every complaint, nothing is ever described as a problem, or untidy, or causing someone concern. We are happy to deal with your complaint, or direct you to the right service/ point of contact but the approach of some people can leave a lot to be desired; getting angry, shouting, swearing and threatening will get you nowhere, and i find the abuse dealt out by some people to service staff frankly appalling. This will not be tolerated, good manners costs nothing. (from ‘disgusted’ of Bawtry road) Two shires Credit Union – is in the Community information Centre every Tuesday morning, and a brilliant job they do, too. They give low interest loans, offer financial advice, and help people avoid using loan sharks. Because i think they give an important service i make a small monthly donation to them via my bank; o.k. so there is no interest but i regard it more as a piggy bank than a savings account, and the money does mount up. i can withdraw my money at any time, should i need it. if you are interested in joining the scheme, call in and ask for an application form.

this is second only to receiving a letter from the inland revenue. We turned up as arranged for my German shepherds annual booster injection, where my pooch sat panting and growling at everything, especially anything feline. i dragged her into the examination room, the injection was given, and the vet then decided to try to cut her nails. He ended up on the floor, i hung on for dear life, and goodness knows what people in the waiting room were thinking at the noise we were making! eventually the nails were cut, and as we staggered back into the waiting room i announced to a sea of startled faces “Give that man a medal”. ... and truly, he certainly deserved one.
