the NOVEMBER 2013 edition

I’m going to spend this month saying No.’ I’ll call it November. - unknown

Having spent time at 2 Conventions since the last magazine, one at the ICC with 1300 business owners and another at a slightly smaller conference centre with over 100 other magazine publishers, I have had a really productive month, working on lots of new ideas. One of the things that I have learned however, is that I cannot do everything! To allow time for some of the things that are important to me, then there are times when I do need to say ‘no’ and not commit myself to things that distract me from what is really important to me. Sometimes we all need to say ‘no’ – but I promise I won’t do it too often! The December magazines will be delivered from 29th November and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 15th November. Try not to leave it until right up to the deadline though – the December magazine is always the most popular magazine of the year and demand for space will be great. T

Best wishes, Paula x

Busy month for the club It has been a very busy month up on the Rec for the club as a whole as all of our teams have had games coming thick and fast. We have new shirt and Advertising board sponsors and Toms Tea-room is finally fully decked out in Colliery Memorabilia. The Cabin was at its busiest when on the 9th of October the 1st team entertained Frickley Colliery a team 4 leagues higher than us in the Sheff and Hallamshire FA county cup. On a freezing cold night we asked the Village to turn out and get behind us, and that’s just what they did so a big thanks to all. In front of 152 we ran the Evo Stick team very close going down 1-0. It was truly refreshing to see so many old faces coming back to see what all the fuss is about and with the great feedback we have had we hope that they again will get through the gate and show the lads and the club their support. I want to take this oppurtunity as well to thank the Committee and all the Pavilion staff for getting everything ready and making the whole night run smoothly. The 1sts at the time of writing are 3rd in the league and with the squad assembled that’s where we want to remain, the reserves and 3rds are also doing well but just need to find some consistency both in team selection and form.

10 10

The Juniors and the Sunday teams are having mixed fortunes with the MUSC 100% record in tact but not so great for Harworth Pavilion, the Under 12’s are taking time to find there feet and the Under 13’s after not the best of starts are now getting the victories they deserve. Onto the Under 16’s and the club are delighted to announce new shirt sponsors in The Sea Queen Fish and Chip shop on Essex Road, Bircotes. We are chuffed to bits that they approached the club and the lads have made a great start in the new kit challenging at the Top of the table. T

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill & Colliery Surgery All members of the PPG are patients of the Tickhill and Colliery Medical Practice. We aim to pass on information and in both directions while trying to put forward the patients view and experience. Patients are gradually becoming more aware of the PPG and we felt we would share some of the comments we have received to date. Over 90% were positive the other 10% were about not getting to see the doctor of their choice, the telephone system, failing to get the appointment time they wanted and issues with the hospital. Here are some of the positives. • The Practice is very good at the moment. • You can get through on the phone now and the doctor phoned back – that was excellent. • The Medical Practice is much improved over the last 9 months. • Having the prescription box in foyer is a brilliant idea. • I like the articles in the Today magazine. • Having struggled in the past to get through by phone I have got through three times recently so a big improvement. 14 14

• The sit and wait system has been very good recently. • The receptionists are lovely - very helpful. • You can always get an appointment or to speak to a doctor. • The staff at Harworth are very accommodating and helpful. • The PPG is a good idea and it’s good to know it exists. • The Colliery Practice is good in all respects and the best around. • We have no complaints everyone is very caring. Here are the responses from the practice to your latest questions:Q Why don’t the out of hours service have access to my medical records? A If patients have consented for information to be shared then details of medication and allergies are available but the information is limited. Details of Out of Hours contact are sent to the practice the next working day. Q I have been with this practice for over 3 months but still have no medical records – Why?

A When a new patient registers, a request for medical records is made to The Health Authority. Who then requests them from the previous GP. The Tickhill and Colliery Practice is reliant on the previous practice sending the records to the H. A. for forwarding to this practice. Q Why do hospitals discharge patients and tell the patient to ask their GP for a scan? Is it cost saving by DRI? A This is an area of frustration for the GP. Whilst in hospital all investigations and treatment are covered by a standard fee. To request further investigations by the GP results in the GP Practice having more charges against their indicative budget. Q Are GPs and Hospitals still part of the same NHS or are they now apart? A We are all part of the ‘NHS Family’ however hospitals are a legal entity in their own right and GPs are Independent Contractors commissioned by NHS England, under an agreed contract, to provide general medical services. Q Why don’t hospitals send information straight away to GPs? A Consultants all work in different ways, never the less, they tend to dictate their letters, which are passed to a typing pool or secretary who types them before passing them back for checking and signing, before they are processed out to GPs. Tell us your grand plan for Harworth & Bircotes THERE are big plans in store for Harworth and Bircotes and never before have residents had more of a say on what can be achieved in the future. The Town Council is working in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council and asking what YOU would like to see happen in Harworth and Bircotes over the next 16 years as part of the Neighbourhood Plan. There have already been ‘Planning over a Pint’ sessions when you have given us some great ideas, and the next event in the diary is a public drop-in session at the Town Hall on Wednesday 13th November, between 2pm and 7pm. We’d love to have a chat with all residents about what facilities, services, employment opportunities, and housing you would like to see brought to the town over the coming years. For example, the future development of the former colliery site and the proposed look of the miners’ memorial garden. Officers from Bassetlaw District Council will be there to answer any questions you have and register your suggestions. There will also be officers on hand from A1 Housing to talk to tenants and residents about the plans to develop the Common Lane and Smith Square areas of the Town. Once we have collated all your ideas, we will be displaying them on the High Street from December. If you would like more information on the event, please contact Steve Bowman on 01302 752642. Police community update Bike Marking Any resident in the Harworth and Bircotes area who has recently purchased a push bike or is thinking of purchasing a bike can now have their bike marked at Harworth Police Station. Can I ask anyone wishing to have their bike marked to contact local PCSO 4716 Claire Walker on the following work number 07525226626 to arrange a time and date to mark the bike up which can be done by cre mark or ultra violet pens. I would like to stress that when the bike is marked up it will be explained/ advised to you that the marking may leave a permanent mark and we advise to mark somewhere on the bike that is not obvious or visible such as underneath the bike frame. As this is being trialled at this time we are asking that only push bikes that have recently been purchased or planning to be purchased, next month this will be reviewed and a decision made whether to open up this scheme to all residents.

Crime Activity in the area Nottinghamshire Police continue to run operations in the area where plain clothes officers have been patrolling the area on foot and in plain cars during the evenings and through the night. These officers have been supported by extra uniformed police officers patrolling the area during the night. This continues to be successful which has already seen a reduction in Burglary other and vehicle crime offences

in the area, Notts Police will continue with these operations over the coming months.

It will be an offence for dealers to make ‘no questions asked’ cash payments which help metal thieves and rogue dealers. Clampdown on unlawful scrap metal dealers Strict new laws have come into effect this month which mean that all scrap metal dealers and motor salvage operators will have to have a licence issued by their local council. It is hoped the new laws will help to clamp down on the estimated 1,000 metal thefts a week in the UK which cost the country around £220 million a year. Councillor Josie Potts, chair of Bassetlaw District Council’s Licensing Committee, said: ‘Metal theft affects everyone; from the stealing of cables that delay train journeys to theft of church roofs and war memorial plaques. To get a license to operate in Bassetlaw, traders will have to satisfy the council that they are suitable and that they will abide by the new rules.’ The new rules apply to both scrap metal sites

A resident of Harworth and Bircotes has recently been issued a speeding fine and 3 points for travelling 71mph on a dual carriageway (70mph zone) as they were unaware that the Transit Connect Van they were driving is classed as a Goods vehicle under 7.5 tonnes which means that the speed limit for this vehicle is 60mph in a 70 zone and 50mph in a 60 zone. The resident wanted other motorists informing in case they make the same mistake or don’t realise that their vehicle is classed as a goods vehicle. If anyone is unsure about what class their vehicle is they can consult the highway code on www.gov. uk or other websites including Wikipedia on the internet or in the latest highway code book. T

Dark Nights and Dancing in November Question - What can you do to keep warm, make new friends, exercise and dance when the nights are drawing in and sunset is as early as 4:15pm in the middle of November? Answer – You can start linedancing at a brand new beginners class at Oldcotes Village Hall on Thursday 14 November starting at 7:30pm. Whilst it is not exactly Strictly Come Dancing, there are many people out there who never thought that they would become linedancers. One of those dancers is Dave Birkinshaw. Dave had never danced before seeing line dancing and being inspired 16 years ago to become a qualified linedance teacher and establish the first Boots & Bolos linedancing class in Tickhill. Linedancing is often classed as exercise to music – but is much more fun than that! The age of dancers range from 8 – 80 and well behaved children with well behaved adults are welcome! A major advantage of linedancing is that you don’t need a partner. All the dances are ‘performed’ in lines – therefore no partner is necessary. We dance to a wide range of music these days, from country to pop and dances can be waltzes, cha cha, etc. If you too could be inspired, Dave 22 22

is starting a brand new linedancing class for beginners at Oldcotes Village Hall from 7:30pm to 9:30pm on Thursday 14 November 2013. We look forward to welcoming you to a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The Hall has an excellent dance floor and safe car parking.

If you have any questions contact Janice (07590 455340) or Dave (07808 931534). Odcotes village hall is diagonally opposite the King William Pub S81 8JN. T

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - NOVEMBER 2013 An Unqualified Audit: a Strange Financial Term. I am happy to report that for the fourth year running, Harworth and Bircotes Town Council has received an unqualified audit report. The term ‘an unqualified audit’ means that the auditors have found nothing wrong and are happy to sign off the accounts as a true and accurate record of Council proceedings that are lawful. We live and learn....

Fancy A Bike Ride? There’s More..... The possible cycling event 13th July 2014 is now confirmed as definite. There will indeed be a Tommy Simpson 100 mile cycle ride for adults, sponsored by Cycling Weekly, and starting and finishing in Harworth and Bircotes. This Council will be working with the organisers to ensure the event is a success and yes, I know it will cause some inconvenience on the day. So what we need is a little understanding, cooperation and plenty of community spirit. As we learn more about the details, we will pass them on to you.

Rural Conference Held at Harworth and Bircotes Town Hall Last month saw representatives from all parish councils gather under our roof for a rural conference. Bassetlaw is a huge rural area, and until recently there were communities I never previously 24 24

knew about, such as Askham, Bothamsall and Wallingwells. The purpose of the conference was : To inform parish councils about topics that might affect their parish, and our Town Clerk Steve Bowman made a presentation about the Lengthsman scheme to keep them aware of developments e.g. Neighbourhood Plans – some, like us, have opted to do this to give them the opportunity for debate about key concerns, such as the current financial position and the possibility of reduced grants. The feedback showed that one thing they all appreciated was the standard of facilities at our Town Hall.

Unwelcome Visitors I refer to the rabbits that invade the cemetery. We are grateful to the resident who has volunteered to deal with these pests; so far last month he had caught ninety eight!

A Welcome Visitor - Alan Rhodes Alan is the Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council. He visited Harworth and Bircotes last month to see for himself how the Town is changing, and to hear about developments both current and for the future.

are several reasons:• We are proud of Harworth and Bircotes and want others to see the improvements • We want to demonstrate that we are forward thinking and keen to make a better environment • We intend keeping a high profile in order to attract potential investment and developments in the future I am pleased to report that he went away very impressed with progress made

Consultation with Shoppers Last month saw Simon Greaves, Leader of Bassetlaw District Council, his Deputy Leader Griff Wynn, and the Chief Executive Neil Taylor out and about here in our Town. They talked to shoppers, asked them what services from B.D.C. were valued and what changes they would like to see – interestingly, they tell me everybody likes living in Harworth and Bircotes..... Talking of which, I had reason to visit Melbourne Grove last month. I was struck by its smart appearance– it looked a picture in the sunshine. The grass was cut and tidy, front gardens cared for, and people were obviously proud of their homes. What a good advert for our Town!

Why do we invite people to our community? There

community community Miners Memorial Garden Area: An Update Now that it is at last legally our responsibility, Council has taken a number of actions: • We have erected green wire fencing at the rear of the land, next to the garden of the first house on Colliery Row; to give the residents there some privacy evergreen climbing plants will be trained to grow up the fencing. We wanted to have wooden panels but were advised this would be vandalised or stolen, so had to think again. • We have now received site maps from the major services indicating where underground electric cables, drains and gas pipes lie, so we have a clear idea of where the memorial can be sited • A dead tree has been removed, though we were not allowed for conservation reasons to ‘thin out’ a clump of trees growing very closely together – so nothing will grow underneath them • Arrangements are in place for a meaningful mining memorial and stone; I am not revealing yet what it will be until I know when it will appear, but I do hope you will approve when you see it

A Development in the Cemetery Council has commissioned a stone memorial for plaques, many of which were originally on wooden benches now more than twenty years old. Council has replaced many benches with indestructible seats, but quite frankly we now have enough. However, I recognise plaques are important to some families, and will wish to see them displayed – hence the memorial, which will be sited near the cemetery entrance; should we need it, we will arrange for a second stone.

Scrap Metal Strict new laws have come into effect: all scrap metal dealers – including those who collect door to door, and motor salvage operators, have to have a licence issued by their local council. There will also be a national register of licence holders. The law says that dealers have to be able to verify the identity of the seller; this means that ‘no questions asked’ cash payments are illegal. It is hoped that this action will discourage metal thieves and rogue traders.

Dumping Medicines We are all aware that some selfish people illegally dump their rubbish on our doorsteps – in fields, woods and hedgerows, but this month a bag containing, amongst other items, prescribed medicines, was found on Snape Lane. This is a highly dangerous practice; all redundant drugs should be returned to a pharmacist. Those drugs were prescribed for one individual who was an adult – what if a child had found them? How irresponsible can you get?

Closing a Snicket A short snicket runs from the Tommy Simpson Field behind the Game Cock pub and some rear gardens on Lindsey Road; this then joins a walkway linking Lindsey Road with Bawtry Road. We have had many complaints from residents whose gardens back onto the snicket behind the Game Cock, mainly about antisocial behaviour, especially in the evenings. Bassetlaw District Council looked at the problem, agreed this short snicket should be closed off, and have taken the appropriate action to do this, helped by a financial contribution from this Council. I hope life now gets better for residents living on that section of Lindsey Road.

Award for Motoring Idiot of the Month There was a clear winner in October. The driver of a FEDEX van driving on Scrooby Road decided to park on both the small roundabout near the Health Centre and the double yellow lines. A fellow Councillor saw him do this, and as he was getting out of his van she stopped him and politely told him he was breaking the law. He first denied there was a roundabout, then decided to tell her what to do, in no uncertain terms. This was certainly a mistake on his part, as she took his registration number, marched into the Community Information Centre, and related what had happened to Steve Bowman, our Town Clerk. Steve quickly looked in the telephone directory, found the number for FEDEX, and complained about the driver, his parking, and his bad language. I hope the driver was reprimanded by the company and I certainly hope he thinks twice before parking his vehicle the next time he comes to Harworth – he might even use the car park! LITTERING & FLY TIPPING IN HARWORTH & BIRCOTES It is an offence to throw litter (and this includes cigarette butts,

scratchcards and food waste) onto the ground which can result in a fine of £80 being issued. If you are caught and issued with a Fixed penalty Notice and refuse to pay the penalty the matter can be referred to the Courts, and if you are found guilty, the fine can increase up to £1,000. Three residents from H&B’s have been fined recently for littering in Doncaster. The incidents of large scale Fly Tipping are also increasing here. - The personal effects of a lady who had recently died were dumped in Snape Lane. - 11 fridges and 6 freezers have been dumped in and around the town in the last month. - One resident of H&B’s has cleared his garden hedge and dumped the material in Droversdale Wood. These acts are not a victim-less crime. You end up paying for the material to be cleared; so please report any littering or Fly Tipping to Environmental Health at Bassetlaw DC on 01909 533533 This can be done anonymously! HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.
