Maybe Christmas… the Grinch
thought, doesn’ t come from a store
Dr Seuss
Well I am inclined to agree. Of course it’s lovely opening carefully wrapped gifts and seeing delight on people’s faces from presents bought at the shops. (Even better when those gifts have been bought locally)! But it’s so easy to overdo it with the pressures of life nowadays. Christmas Day, is the perfect day to do nothing but spend TIME. It’s one of those precious days of the year where everyone expects you to be with friends and family, so grab it with both hands and even if you can only afford a couple of smaller gifts for your children or grandchildren make sure they’re ones that you can sit and do together. Kids love nothing more than to make things, and to have their parents/grandparents interact with them so use your imagination this year. And please spare a thought and some time for those without family who may be lonely this Christmas, and for those who do have to work to ensure that our hospitals and other essential services continue to function. Whatever you choose to do in the run-up to the special day make sure it is happy, peaceful and fun. The January issue will be delivered to you during the festive season – sometime between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this then please ensure details are with me by Friday 6th December – early I know but these magazines need to be produced, printed, sorted and delivered to all of my lovely distributors before I can take some time off with my family this Christmas!. Harworth FC News Firstly from everyone associated with the club I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and I hope 2014 is a year to remember for yourself and the club as a whole. As ever its been another busy month for all our teams as the leagues try cramming as many fixtures in as possible before the usual winter postponements kick in. At the time of writing the 1st team sit proudly at the top of Central Midlands North Division, this hasn’t happened through any fluke, but hard work both on and off the pitch. Bren has brought in players with higher league experience and it is showing. It’s worth noting as well that the squad has been hit massively through injuries to many of last years 11 so without bringing the number of players in, we would have been struggling rather than amongst the leading pack. December is a huge month though as every game is away from home, so if we are still top in next months edition we really will be in the hunt! Just like to say a thank you to the supporters that have got behind the lads both home and away, I hope the word continues to spread, and why not with good football on show and Toms Tea-room all decked out with Colliery memorabilia and old squad photos. If you have any old photos or programmes then get
10 10
in touch we would love to have them in the Cabin, contact details below. The Reserves and thirds are also doing very well and both have excellent oppurtunities in both league and Cup. The Reserves are on a good run in the league and have two cup games coming up The 3rds also have a very tough cup game against CMFL opposition Thorne Colliery but both teams will give it their all, and no matter what the result will both benefit from the experience of playing higher league opposition, with the 1sts away all this month please get up and support the lads. Keeping with the good news the Under 13’s at time of writing are at the top of there league, after a tough start they now have found a rich vein of form and Graham is getting the best from his lads. The Under 12’s are also finding some form but just need to find some luck as the results are not going their way. Gavins Under 16’s are in among the top 4 and they have now assembled a very good disciplined squad and we hope that a number of these players will go on to represent the senior teams next year. Gavin is giving them the perfect platform, keep it up lads.
Message for all parents of 5-10 year olds interested in playing, the club now holds training on the Astro-turf every Saturday between 11-12 with our very own Makenzie Tomlinson. £2.50 with a drink, hot dog and chips afterwards in the Pavilion we hope to get more Junior teams playing again from the Village and not having to go to Bawtry or Tickhill so don’t forget every Saturday. With Christmas round the corner the club are now selling club Scarves for £6 and Club Bobble Hats for £10 please use contacts below if interested as they are cracking stocking fillers.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@hotmail T All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page

Magic and Sparkle??

14th December Christmas Dance 8pm – 11.30pm 15th December Annual Christmas Concert Matthew Bason 2.30pm Find us at Harworth Community Hall, Whitehouse Road, Bircotes, DN11 8EF www.harworthchristie.org.uk T
At Christmas it’s very easy to feel that in the midst of all the consumerism, all the hedonism, all the shopping, eating, and drinking that goes on, the real message of Christmas can become lost. It’s always hard to remember the meaning of the season when we’re stuffed full of Christmas pudding, watching Christmas specials of our favourite soaps on the telly. That’s why it was so refreshing to find a constant reminder in the adverts on this Christmas. The real message of Christmas: Magic and Sparkle. So that in our homes, among our families this Christmas, we know that Christmas has happened because we experienced some Magic and Sparkle. I don’t really think any of the other advertising campaigns mean anything different. It’s about making sure we know we have had Magic and Sparkle. Magic and Sparkle of course comes through the right food, the right clothes and the perfect present. Everything around us at Christmas is telling us stories. In the case of Marks and Spencer a story that mimics the fairy tales we know (Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz). In the case of John Lewis a modern fairy tale for Christmas (The bear that nearly missed Christmas). We’re surrounded by a story that ultimately sets us up for disappointment. We want Magic and Sparkle. We want the fairy tale ending and, quite simply put, few of us get it. The critical story is often missing at Christmas and that is the story of a baby born into a poverty of material things, with no home, no pile of cleanly washed baby grows and no pram sat in the hallway. More importantly it is the story of a baby born into a wealth of 14 14
love, born to a loving family, born into a world waiting for him, welcoming him, rejoicing at his birth. Ultimately when we share the greatest story ever told at Christmas we have a story of God choosing to be with us in the most vulnerable risky way. Choosing to become one of us. As a tiny baby. When we begin to understand Christmas as a time of giving as God gave; giving of ourselves, our time and our love, it becomes not just a story, or a couple of weeks in the winter, or an advert, but a way of life. The stories we tell at Christmas are important. It makes all the difference to whether or not we actually experience any ‘Magic and Sparkle’. If we tell a tale of products and things, the gifts of Christmas, the message becomes temporary. If we share a story of God with us, of love known through the giving of God and through the giving of ourselves and our time to each other then we shall have more than enough ‘Magic and Sparkle’ to last a lifetime. ‘It’s a mystery to me how the hands of God could be so small…. Heaven’s love reaching out to save the world’ Magic and Sparkle. It’s right there. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas. Reverend Leah Vasey-Saunders. All Saints Church, Harworth. T

Sports & Social Club December! Fireworks Display The directors at the Pavilion would like to say a big thank to all who attended the Pavilion Firework display on Friday 1st of November.
Due to matters out of our hands the Council decided not to run an event this year, so as a thank you to all our customers, Parents and Children that use our facilities we decided to run and fund the event ourselves, and from the feedback that we have received, we can say that it was a great success. With your support we are confident that we will be able to do the same again next year and hopefully many more after that. A big thank you to all.
recreational grounds bring their own bags to clear up after their dogs. The staff are spending ever increasing time and effort removing mess and they shouldn’t have to do this. There are bins provided for all and it is a health and safety issue as we have children and adults playing Football on the fields and is not on that the volunteers associated with the sports and social clubs are having to do this. Please ensure that if you are bringing your dog onto the grounds that you are fully equipped.

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill & Colliery Surgery We have just completed a second busy year involving a variety of events most of which we have reported on. The latest Information Session was on the topic of Awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease presented by Kath Rawlings This event was extremely informative and interesting and helped us realise the importance of inclusion in our local area. Kath gave us statistics, explained the main forms of Dementia, and led us through the challenges that the patient and their carers will face. She explained the progression of the disease in its different forms whilst also making us aware of the deterioration caused to everyone by infection, dehydration, malnutrition and lack of the necessary vitamins and minerals. Surviving Christmas Surviving a modern day Christmas can be challenge enough for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a plant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force fed with growthstunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table …. and here’s me feeling sorry for the turkey! It seems such a shame that after all the effort, you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year will be different though, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yuletide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive (until New Year at least!). House plants give such a wonderful display, and are sure to last longer than a bunch of flowers. Choose from large flowering Cyclamen, brightly coloured Azaleas, sweetly scented Jasmine and of course the traditional Poinsettia. Oh, and don’t forget about bulbs, ‘Paperwhite’ Narcissus are synonymous with Christmas, and forced Hyacinths too, but I can appreciate that their strong scent is best savoured in spring. Before we go on to the care of houseplants, let’s just clear one thing up, houseplants hate houses! Dry central heating, low light levels and draughts are all things houseplants really don’t like, as most of these plants come from very humid, 20 20
tropical parts of the world. The best way to ensure your flowers bloom for longer and your leaves don’t go brown at the tips, is to ensure the right conditions for survival. Avoid placing plants in a draughty location such as windowsills, or near to a frequently opened door, (they won’t appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature) Avoid hotspots, such as in front of or above a radiator or fire Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water, and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water, (but ensure plants are not sat in water) Create a ‘plant area’ where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity Avoid direct sunshine Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated, water little and often Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering And finally, don’t get emotionally attached, think of flowering houseplants as a medium term bunch of flowers or a Christmas decoration, and after flowering if they look a little jaded, return them to the compost heap in the sky - I don’t think there’s any worse house plant tragedy

than a straggly Poinsettia in July with three stunted yellow leaves. Poinsettias are popular because they look wonderful, but here’s a little word of warning, be careful not to get the sap of a Poinsettia on your skin as they can cause irritation, and always keep them out of reach of pets and children. Within 24 hours of the devastation caused by the worst storm to make landfall in recorded history, Lions Clubs International Foundation had provided an initial US$ 500,000 for relief efforts and by the time you read this report much more will have been provided from around the world. There are 380 Lions Clubs in the Philippines, one of which is located in Tacloban, the epicentre of the storm. Lions Clubs in the UK are now looking to provide support which may be required for months, if not years, until life returns to normal. Anyone wishing to support may donate by handing an envelope marked ‘Typhoon’ to Father Christmas as our float tours the district on the dates listed later in this report. T

community Dear Friends, Christmas is about peace, isn’t it? I may be very young but I have learnt one thing in this world as I grow up. I wonder if I may be wrong but I have realised that when one war is about to end, at least another one starts. My opinion is that some people seem to find it difficult to live at peace with others. It could be seen in family feuds, divisions at the work places, misunderstandings within tribes, clans, cultures, religions, etc. If each of us is given the chance, we may name a few issues in our experiences or that of those we know which may have disturbed our peace. However, it’s not all that bad when it comes to Christmas. God decided to come to this world in the form of a baby in order to bring peace to all situations. From the Bible, the Prophet Isaiah predicted his birth a few hundred years before he was born in Bethlehem. He went further to predict his name: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end (Isaiah 9: 6-7).
Peace at Christmas
Christians believe that the Prince of Peace was born on Christmas day. We know him as Jesus. He lived on earth and brought peace to people by healing, teaching and helping them. He also brought peace to those who believed in him by dying on the cross for their sins. Before his death he promised peace to this world. Moreover, after his death and resurrection, he breathed peace unto his followers. He also encourages us to live at peace with all people. We can do that by treating people with respect and being good to others. That’s the spirit of Christmas. However, it’s not a one-off gimmick. We are entreated to do so daily. I wonder if we can see everyday of our lives as Christmas in order to become agents of

peace in our own small world. Most people hope for the best for others at Christmas. I wonder if I can recommend to you that as you express your love to family and friends, may you also consider living at peace with others. You may try to do your part as you extend a hand of friendship to the vulnerable in society. This Christmas, my prayer is that the God of peace, through his son Jesus Christ, be with you. I also pray that he may grant you your heart’s desire as you look forward to a peaceful new year in your life.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year greetings to you all.

Beginner’s Line Dancing with Boots & Bolos In last month’s magazines we asked the question ‘What can you do to keep warm, make new friends, exercise and dance when the nights are drawing in and sunset is as early as 4.15 in the middle of November?’ Well - the answer was - ‘Learn to Line Dance at Oldcotes’! People came from all over - and
everyone went home with a certain glow and a big smile. Lots of fun was had and quite a few calories used up in the process! You can’t help chatting with your neighbouring learner as you line up, so new friends were also made. If you couldn’t join us for the first classes - don’t worry. It is easy to catch up at this stage. Dave goes over the dances learned the previous weeks and really helps people to catch up.
So - if that’s all that’s putting you off - come along! Give it a try and fill at least one dark night this winter. The class is at Oldcotes Village Hall from 7.30 p.m. - 9.30 p.m. with a break for tea and biscuits. Cost - only £3. Fairtrade makes a difference!
The Fairtrade market in the UK in 2012 was worth £1.53 billion pounds (fairtrade foundation website). In 2008 a group of Bassetlaw residents got together to form Fairtrade for Bassetlaw to promote Fairtrade in the local district; in 2009 Bassetlaw became a Fairtrade district and has remained so ever since. During the last few months the group has undertaken a survey of local supermarkets, cafes and other retail establishments to up date the 30 30
directory of where fairtrade products could be purchased.
To qualify a retail outlet must stock at least four fairtrade product ranges and catering outlets must stock at least two fairtrade product ranges. In Bassetlaw the survey shows overall there are 39 outlets that meet the criteria an increase of 1 since the last survey in 2008/9. Each outlet that meets the criteria can display a sticker saying ‘Proudly supporting Fairtrade in Bassetlaw’. So watch out for these stickers. Kathy Cowbrough, Chair of Fairtrade for Bassetlaw who helped with the survey said ‘the owners and mangers of the shops we visited were genuinely proud to offer Fairtrade

products as part of their range; and cafe owners said it was great when people specifically ask for Fairtrade tea/coffee sugar or other snack options when they pop in for a break. So join others in supporting Fairtrade in Bassetlaw and be sure to visit our recently updated website For more about Fairtrade in Bassetlaw, you can visit www. fairtradeforbassetlaw.org.uk where you can get more details about the campaign and check outlets offering Fairtrade products in Bassetlaw. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2013 House Building You will have noticed work has begun by Jones Homes on their site on Scrooby Road; last month planning permission was granted to Persimmon to build 250 houses at the top of Bawtry Road, and Persimmon tell me they want to start work on the site January 2014, weather permitting. The plans to demolish the Airey houses and rebuild new houses are being finalised as I write; the plans also include the build of a number of bungalows. I understand some people may not wish for more housing; they tell me Harworth and Bircotes won’t be the same... and they are right, it won’t. The fact is, we can’t stay as a redundant mining community, we have to change, and the only way to return to being a thriving community is to grow. Yes, this means a larger population with the associated impact on schools and infrastructure, but it also means a boost for local business and local economy. I also note the gradual growth on our industrial sites; the latest business to appear is R. S. Motorhomes, who have transferred their business from Goldthorpe to Harworth Park (previously the headquarters of U.K. Coal). They tell me Harworth is ideal for them because it is so close to the A1, and their customers come from all over England. And guess what- the owners also tell me that they now do their shopping in Harworth. I hear complaints about the unavailability of some goods locally but technology has brought changes to the way we buy our goods and nowadays many items are bought online. There is also the issue that small shops are often not supported locally because people prefer to 32 32
visit the large department stores. We can’t have it both ways, folks….
Developments Council is aware that the Town Hall car park will soon be needing to be resurfaced; however, we think it best to wait until the extension to the rear of the Community Information Centre is built. Once this is completed and the Police have moved in, then we can address the car park. Plans for the extension to the building have been submitted for planning approval; I understand building will start next year. You may be aware that Harworth and Bircotes Town Council is negotiating the purchase from Bassetlaw District Council – for a minimal sum- of Snipe Park Wood, and I hear that the legal requirements and ultimate transfer are nearing completion.
Why bother? Because we are a growing community, our population will increase over the next decade, and we need facilities ‘fit for purpose’. Ask yourself – do we want decent facilities, or derelict buildings?
Blue Bins The District Council are currently reminding us of what we can and cannot put into our blue bin. The problem is that Councils are fined if they exceed a 5% contamination limit. What is the main contaminant? Plastic! So it is important we understand that plastic margarine tubs, yoghurt tubs and bottles are the only acceptable plastic items. What is the difference between a margarine tub and a butter tub? I have no idea, but the big waste management companies obviously do.
You may not be aware that we are also trying to acquire the building – and some land- on the Tommy Simpson Memorial Field. This is a neglected and underused building that we believe could be transformed into a real community asset, to be used by clubs and community groups. Yes, it needs a lot of work, yes, it would need to be extended in such a way that it would not impact on nearby residents and yes, we would have to apply for grants in order to do this … but we believe it is possible to turn the vision into reality.

community community whose old houses will then be demolished and rebuilt. 2. People from Thompson Avenue and possibly some from Common Lane can then transfer into this second set of new houses on Smith Square.
Extra Dog Bins and Litter Bins. A dog bin has been installed further down Common Lane, as requested by local dog walkers, and another dog bin is now in place opposite the cemetery gates. I ask that people walking their dogs on the grassed area near the cemetery to please pick up their dog waste and put it in the bin; I also ask those people using the snicket between Bawtry Road and the cemetery to also use the bin and stop throwing dog mess in the hedge bottoms or just leaving it on the path. Litter bins have been placed at each end of the footpath that links the very end of Beverley Road to Scrooby Road.
Public Consultation Exercise This was held on 13th November, and it related to the Neighbourhood Plan for Harworth and Bircotes. Also on display were the proposed plans for the replacement of the Airey houses currently on Smith Square, Thompson Avenue and Common Lane. Lots of comments were made – some very positive, some less so, but I was pleased to see so many people turn up. The plan from A1 (in simple terms) is to:1.Build houses on the green play area above Thompson Avenue/ Smith Square, then decant into these new houses the tenants from Smith Square,
3. Demolish the Airey houses on Thompson Avenue and rebuild to accommodate tenants from Common Lane. 4. The final stage will be to demolish the houses on Common Lane. I have to stress that there will be some flexibility around these proposals and I am assured individual circumstances will be considered.
What do I like about the plan? • Firstly, some bungalows will be built – we have great need of them. I have also asked that A1 get on and convert the empty community centre on Beverley Road into a bungalow. • Secondly, the establishment of a much-needed, properly equipped play area, though this means we lose three houses from the original plans. • Thirdly, people from Thompson Avenue/Smith Square will be re-located back to those streets; families there have a strong community spirit and strong friendships. • Fourth, we will have more houses in total than before, which means more homes for people on the waiting list. What don’t I like about the plan? The fact that Common Lane tenants will not be returning there. Why not? Because the budget for the build is £4.1m; everything has to be done within that financial limit, and the plans currently being finalised are the only way we can stay within budget.
November, when I first saw the plans, proved to be the most difficult month I have ever encountered as a District Councillor; those people working with me will probably say the same, as I challenged many aspects of the proposals and secured a few changes.
Success Dog Chipping Event. Last month saw 123 dogs micro chipped free of charge, thanks to the Dogs Trust and the Bassetlaw District Council Dog Warden. The session was held at the Community Information Centre, and every owner was also supplied with a packet of dog pooh bags. I think we can say this was a very successful event. A Decent Path. After years of lobbying by this Council to address the flooding problem on the path between Snipe Park Wood and the Wimpey Estate, extra pressure from the Tenants and Residents Association seems to have done the trick. Engineers from Bassetlaw District Council have installed a grate which certainly coped with the heavy rain a few weeks ago. Hopefully, parents/children will be able to get to school in the winter months without encountering a stretch of black mud on the pathway, and this pedestrian link between Harworth and Bircotes can be used by everyone. Well done, T.R.A.
To Make You Smile Someone recently asked what I would do if I knew I had just 3 months to live – take an exotic holiday, or do a parachute jump, or give my assets to charity, perhaps? Answer: I would buy a

Yes, I would get arrested and yes, I would re-offend, but by the time my case got to court I would have died, happy that a few people would certainly have good cause to remember me. Harworth and Bircotes Town Council wishes everyone a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. June Evans Chair of H & B Town Council
Thank You. Once again Harworth &Bircotes Town Council, would like to thank Mr Gerald Holian for the wonderful home grown Flowers he planted at our War Memorial. We had a lovely mixture of colour all summer, and now the beds have been planted out with Winter Pansies, to brighten the Autumn & Winter days. Thanks also to Joyce who kept the Beds watered, and tidy, and Mr & Mrs Godbeer for their help. The Town Council greatly appreciates your efforts, again many thanks to you all.
Overgrown Boundaries Now the dark nights are with us could we please ask all residents to check their boundaries to ensure that there are no bushes, trees, plants or shrubs, overhanging Pavements, Roads, or Public Footpaths that could cause damage or injury, should there be any problems YOU could be liable. Thank you Cllr Brian Letherland
