welcome TO THE DECEMBER EDITION OF HARWORTH TODAY. Another year has flown past and here I am again putting together the Christmas editions! Thank you for all your comments about the new design of the magazine, in general these were all incredibly positive and we will continue to make on-going improvements, keeping your feedback in mind. This month’s issue contains lots of details of Christmas events, fairs and concerts. I hope you will enjoy supporting them this festive season. The January issue will be delivered to you over the New Year period. It does however have to be with all of the distributors before Christmas, and as I am hoping to leave deliveries to Santa on Christmas Eve I have needed to set the deadline for submissions particularly early! Please ensure that anything you would like to be included is with me by Friday 7th December. While it does seem incredibly early (i am writing this mid-November) i would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas.
Best wishes, Paula x

It’s never to late to learn to Swim
They say that 1 in 5 adults cannot swim and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life! So why doesn’t everyone who hasn’t learnt to swim by the time they are adults get themselves off to swimming lessons to learn? by an occupying force within their own country, then threatened with violence, before having to flee and become refugees, asylum seekers in a foreign land.
We have sets from around the world, Israel, South America, Africa, India, England, and possibly quite a few from China.
It is a very human story, that is sadly all too real in our world today, but it is a very ‘divine’ story because it speaks of the extent god goes to reveal His love for His humanity, His own Son Jesus becoming one of us, one with us, that we may be made one with god.
It is becoming exceedingly difficult to find any space around the house whilst Christmas decorating, every conceivable nook and cranny is covered with these Nativity scenes. I must however point out I buy them, but my wife is responsible for finding room for them to be on display, that’s called delegation of labour, (not words my wife would use!). I love the ways the story of Jesus’ birth is portrayed in glass, wood, ceramic, plastic and paper. Each one conveys the vulnerability of that little family group pushed around 10 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

Have you ‘bin’ doing it right? Don’t forget to double check before recycling RESIDENTS IN HARWORTH
are being urged to double check their recycling waste before putting items in the blue bins. bassetlaw District Council and Waste Disposal Contractors veolia have been making random checks of the blue recycling bins across bassetlaw, which showed Harworth has the highest contamination rate in the District. Councillor Julie leigh, Cabinet member for Environment and leisure urged residents to take more care when sorting items to put in the blue bins and said: “It is essential that households place the correct waste in the correct bins. If a bin with the wrong waste ‘contaminates’ a load, this will be taken to a landfill site at the taxpayer’s expense and cannot be recycled - even if there are only a few wrong items. “This is clearly unfair to people who sort their waste correctly, therefore our Refuse Teams have been told not to collect recycling bins which contain the wrong materials. We are trying to keep costs to the taxpayer at a minimum and increase our recycling rates.” The following items CAN be placed in the blue recycling bin: Paper, card, cardboard, paper envelopes, magazines, non-metallic wrapping paper, junk mail, leaflets and flyers, catalogues, directories & newspapers, Yoghurt pots, margarine
tubs, Plastic bottles (please remove lids of all plastic bottles), Household food and drinks cans, deodorant cans including aerosols.
Leaflets or recycling wheel showing which items can go into the blue recycling bin are available at the information Centre, scrooby road, Harworth. They can also be downloaded from www. bassetlaw.gov.uk or posted out to you by calling 01909 534485. n

interview
PUNK ROCK WILL never die… that’s a fact. Local legends Nexus Noise are the proof; they reformed in 2009 after a 30 year hiatus to play a birthday party gig at the Blacksmiths Arms in Harworth and haven’t looked back since. i interviewed the band in 2010 and felt that it was time to catch up with them before their Christmas shows. Did you expect to be together 3 years after that birthday gig?
Wink (vocals): Not in a million years. Ray (guitar): That was meant to be a one-off.
What have you been up to?
Steve (bass): We’ve played a load of gigs. Wink: mainly around Doncaster supporting the likes of Peter and the Test Tube babies, 999 and a handful of tribute bands. 12 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY
You play a 999 song in your set, what was it like supporting them? Sam: When we were kids they were our idols and we would always talk about how great it would be to play a gig with them. Ray: That gig was like a dream come true. Steve: We played their song ‘homicide’ during our sound-check and the whole band watched us. At the end of the song they clapped... it was a very surreal moment. They even asked us to play it during our set but we didn’t think it would be appropriate.
What is the band up to?
Wink: We’ve got a show at the leopard in Doncaster supporting a tribute band called The Clashed on Saturday 22nd December 2012. It’s to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of The Clash front man and punk superhero Joe Strummer. Sam: We’re really looking forward to our Christmas Extravaganza gig at
Nexus Noise the Blacksmiths Arms in Harworth on Friday 28th December 2012. Wink: it’s going to be good playing a show in Harworth again after our world tour of Doncaster. Father punk-a-clause with be making an appearance.
What about the future?
Steve: some more gigs and were hoping to get back in the studio. Sam: We’re blown away by the feedback we’re getting at our shows and that keeps us going. We thought that we would only appeal to the old punks but we get a cross section of people telling us how much they like the music. I really can’t wait for the show at the Blacksmiths Arms…it’s going to be pretty special. Nexus Noise can be followed on Facebook.n

Mayflower animal Sanctuary Our message to you this Christmas is GIVE THE GIFT OF
HOPE TO AN ABANDONED DOG AND CAT. Please give to our Christmas appeal just £5 will keep a dog or cat warm, fed and taken care of for a week. The recession seems to have caught up with us, our waiting list of dogs and cats has reached 12 weeks. When someone needs to re home an animal and there is a crisis in the family they are unable to wait this length of time. Looking at the current situation has made us re assess our current kennels to try and make further space. We are also looking at different ways of fund raising together with the launch of our £5 GIFT OF HOPE APPEAL. You will be amazed to hear that it costs £500 per day to continue with the work we do. We really want to be here for the future but we cannot continue without your support. Even a standing order for as little as £1 per week would make such a difference as every penny counts. If you wish to contribute please call us and we will be happy to send you standing order details. We are also looking for people that can spare 2 hours a day between 10-12 to walk our dogs. You must however be over 18 years of age. The more exercise they receive the happier they will be. Football team scores at opening of new Asda in Harworth
To Drive the cold winter away
PLAYERS FROM HARWORTH
Colliery Football Club were on hand to officially open the new Asda Harworth store on Scrooby Road. 17 players from the junior and senior teams at the town’s football club were invited to cut the ribbon on the new supermarket by store manager Richard Terry, in recognition of the colliery site the store now occupies. As a thank you they were given a £100 gift card. With its arrival the 14,400 sq ft supermarket has created 85 part-time and full-time jobs. Store manager, Richard Terry, said: “It’s been a great atmosphere today at the store seeing customers come through our doors for the first time. Colleagues have worked hard to get the store ready for opening and now it’s lovely to see it up and running. A special thanks as well to the players of Harworth Colliery Football Club. We wanted
to ensure our opening included members of the local community and what better way than to do this by using the historic link between the colliery and the store. We have exciting plans to unveil in the coming months as to how we will support groups and organisations that form an important part of community life in Harworth so watch this space.” Jonathan Wilson, chairman of Harworth Colliery Football Club, added: “It was great to be a part of the opening festivities at the new Asda store today and it was lovely to see the heritage of the site being acknowledged with an invitation for our players to come down and cut the ribbon. We know Asda is keen to get more involved with the local community and we hope to work with colleagues at the store in the future.” n

community Don’t leave a present for Santa Claws this Christmas
A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Neil Bellamy.
Don’t leave a present for Santa Claws this Christmas WITH CHRISTMAS JUST a few weeks away I want to introduce you to a character who always puts in an appearance around this time every year – Santa Claws.
He’s no relation to Santa Claus, the friendly old man with the white beard and the red suit. Santa Claws doesn’t bring you presents – he steals them, so make sure he doesn’t call at your house this Christmas. For most people, Christmas is the Season of goodwill, but thieves don’t believe in goodwill, unless it’s for them, and they never take a holiday. The real Santa comes down the chimney, but Santa Claws comes in through on open door or an insecure window. And, he won’t hang around for a mince pie and a glass of sherry. In fact, just like the real Santa, you probably won’t realise you’ve had a visit from Santa Claws until it’s too late. Thieves know that at this time of the year, houses are filled with all sorts of festive goodies – goodies Santa Claws would love to get his hands on. So don’t make it easy for him. make sure that thieves get what they deserve – a thoroughly miserable Christmas. And, a few sensible precautions will make sure the only visitor to your home this festive season is the real Santa and not Santa Claws. 22 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY
First of all, an unlit house is an open invitation to Santa Claws. When you go out, close the curtains and leave one or two lights on – lights that would normally be on when you are at home. leave the radio on. If all the lights are out, it’s a pretty safe bet that there is nobody at home – which is just what a thief likes to know. And don’t make the mistake of leaving just the landing light on because nobody sits in the hall or on the landing to watch Tv. When you are out in the car doing your Christmas shopping, make sure you don’t leave a present for a thief on the back seat or the dashboard. mobile phones, sat navs, credit cards, handbags and shopping bags, even loose change is just what a thief is looking for. A thief doesn’t break into your car for a look round. He breaks in because he can see something to steal. When out Christmas shopping many people return to their car to leave things they have bought – and then go off to do some more shopping. If you do, hide what you’ve bought in the boot. If you don’t, your shopping will probably have gone when you return for the second time. And, think when you park your car. It may be daylight when you leave the car, but will it be dark when you return? Dark, streets and lonely car

PCSO6364 Colin Haywood 07525226882 n parks are what a thief likes. It may cost a couple of pounds, but it’s much safer to park in a Secured Car Park. They are always well lit, regularly patrolled and have CCTv cameras. And when you get home, don’t leave a pile of empty cardboard boxes by the back door or at the side of the wheelie bin. That tells a thief exactly what you have bought. Cut the boxes up and put them in the bin. better still, take them to an official Dumpit site. Finally, it’s a good idea to mark all your new, valuable items with an ultra violet marker. The pens only cost a few pence, but police and second hand shops always check property for such markings. Christmas should be a happy time for everyone so make sure it is only the REAl Santa Claus who gets into your home this Festive Season. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - December 2012
CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST here. love it or dread it, there is no denying the pleasure the children get from Christmas lights, nativity plays, and of course the school holiday! So from everyone at Harworth and bircotes Town Council, have a merry Christmas.n THe FireWOrKs DisPLAY
on the recreation ground was excellent. Thanks to Cllr. Dave Challinor for all his hard work in organising the event, and to all those other Councillors who helped out. Health and safety is a high priority at an event like this, so stewardship (of the cars and sometimes the children!) is essential. n
THe POLiCe CriMe PANeL.
Cllr. Challinor will be the representative for bassetlaw on this new body that will be overseeing Policing in Nottinghamshire.n
iT’s A FUNNY OLD WOrLD:
for years our Town has struggled following the closure of the Colliery, now it seems we are deserving of much attention. behind the scenes I know John mann is working to encourage business into our community and thus provide jobs, and bassetlaw District Council is promoting Harworth and bircotes as a growth area. So what have we to offer? good communication links with close proximity to the motorway and access to the airport, plenty of land – especially land used previously for industry, and a population looking for work and not afraid of getting their hands dirty. Yes, I know these things don’t happen overnight, and the economic recession is not helping, but it is important to plan ahead – I have seen the plans, prepared in readiness for our anticipated growth, to create a filter lane from the A1m blyth roundabout onto the b6364 road to Harworth.n

sO WHAT eLse is HAPPeNiNG?
Jones builders held a public display at the Town Hall of their proposed design for a new housing development along Scrooby Road. Several comments were made about just one concern: an entrance/exit road almost opposite the school; I have flagged this up with bassetlaw District Council and if the awaited detailed planning application shows no change I will ask for an opinion from Highways. n land at Hawkins Close (rear of Sherwood Road) has been bought by a builder; the plot is designated big enough for around a dozen houses. n land on Scrooby Road (opposite the Fire Station) has been bought by a retail company. We will know more shortly; a meeting with the company has been arranged. n uK COAl is giving this Council the small plot of land in front of Colliery Road and adjacent to the entrance road into Asda. We want to make it an attractive area, with paving, a pathway and flower beds. A designer from Notts. County has drawn up four potential options, and the people from Colliery Road will shortly be consulted on their preference. One further point: for some time residents have requested a memorial to all miners killed whilst working at Harworth Colliery; we think this spot, so close to the Colliery gates, would be the ideal spot - I hope you all approve of this proposal.
means that the leader and others at Nottinghamshire County Council are now very aware of Harworth and bircotes, the issues we face and the efforts being made for improvements – I am convinced that previously they thought Nottinghamshire ended at mansfield! This approach has paid off in terms of grants and facilities received e.g. speed signs, extra bus shelters, money for planters, gateway signs, hanging baskets; and as Cllr Hart often tells me, it does no harm to say ‘thank you’ and strengthen a beneficial relationship. Why do I mention this? –because we Councillors need your help, too. If you have a complaint then by all means tell us about it buT it helps us if you are prepared to put pen to paper, or pop into the Community Information Centre, where you will find a representative of Notts. County every Friday morning. I appreciate it is confusing understanding the three tiers of ‘the Council’ and their differing responsibilities, but we are happy to explain this. A letter from you to County (or District) explaining your problem will go a long way to the authorities giving the issue a higher priority. n Finally, as someone born and brought up here, I am committed to putting my community first. most people here are good people, friendly and helpful, and like myself plain speaking. I am happy to help you whenever and however I can, but please don’t shout, swear and point at me in the street; my name is June, not ‘Hey, You’. Cllr June evans,Chair H&B Town Council n
