welcome to the FEBRUARY 2013 edition of Harworth Today. “How do you spell ‘love’?” asked Piglet… ”You don’t spell it...you feel it.” answered Pooh. What a lovely quote! And so totally true. With Valentines Day coming up it got me thinking about love and what it actually means. Not just in the context of partnerships but also with people around us; our children and friends. It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s your thoughts and efforts that go a long way. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February, just have a go at extending some love to a person close to you. As Piglet says, you don’t even need to be able to spell it. The next issue will be delivered from 1st March, anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th February – Valentines Day!
Best wishes, Paula x

It’s never to late to learn to Swim
They say that 1 in 5 adults cannot swim and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life! So why doesn’t everyone who hasn’t learnt to swim by the time they are adults get themselves off to swimming lessons to learn? I run a private adult swimming school at Bircotes Leisure Centre every Sunday night and have been teaching adult swimmers of all ages and abilities for some considerable time, so I reckon I’ve heard most of the reasons that people come up with. Here’s a few: swimming gets you (and particularly your hair) wet; you have to expose bits of you that you’d rather keep under wraps; it’s probably too late to learn at your age. Some of these things are true: it is very wet in a swimming pool and it is better to swim in a swimming costume than in everyday clothes. As for it being too late to learn, most adults are surprised to find how quickly they can learn. Of course it takes different people different amounts of time, and each person has different aspirations, but to be able to enter the pool and travel around without support should only take a matter of a few lessons. There is one very real fear that many adults have regarding learning to swim, and that is that they will be recognised. I guess this fear attaches itself to the fear of exposing more of your body than you care to share with the public and the embarrassment of admitting you can’t swim. Firstly I can attest to the truth of the rumour that it is very difficult to recognise people with their clothes on. I have been caught out on a number of occasions by people coming up to me and holding long and detailed conversations with me, while I stand there in bewilderment wondering who they are. Secondly, everyone in the class is in exactly the same position as you; they are there to learn to swim and are wearing a swimming costume (and probably won’t recognise you with your clothes on either). In addition, as we hire the whole pool for the lessons, there is no chance that Mark Foster or Sharron Davies will turn up unannounced to upstage you. Remember, swimming is probably the only sport that can save your life as well as being probably the most complete workout for your body. It is also fun. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to enjoy the pool and sea on holiday, go swimming with your kids or simply use the skill to get fit. It’s worth getting wet for. Michael Keeble

Harworth & Bircotes WELL, HERE WE are, another
year gone and hopefully a happy and healthy one ahead.
MEMBERS OF THE trA helped out
at the Christmas Party held at the town hall in December. it was organised by the safer Neighbourhood Police team. it was a great party, congratulations on a job well done to the Police, all the children seem to enjoy the afternoon.
THE FINAL FIGURES are in for the
Christmas lighting event, our team did exceptionally well, our best year ever showing an overall profit of just over £300. so a big thank you to all our helpers and everyone who so very kindly donated gifts for the tombola stall. We would like to say a special thank you to Dave, the lovely manager of the harworth Co-op. Not only did
tenants & residents Association
he get in an extra stock of selection boxes for our santa to give to the children, but he also gave us a tin of biscuits, a tin of sweets and £20 (which we promptly spent on more tins of sweets and a bottle of baileys) all for our Christmas raffle. this raffle made us over £80. so thank you Dave, we really appreciate the help you gave us.
some of the proceeds of this event went towards paying for the coach party we took to the pantomime in retford at the majestic theatre on the 4th Jan, we supplied sweets and drinks for the kids and a fabulous time was had by all. We would also like to say a very big thank you to Councillor sheila Place, who sent us a Christmas card with a cheque for £100 inside, it was a lovely surprise and will boost our funds in readiness for our next trip.

IN DECEMBER WE had our usual outing to the styrrup hall Golf Club for our annual Christmas lunch, and what a fabulous lunch it was. We would also like to thank Councillors brian leatherland and Frank hart, who also came to the Christmas lunch, for their generous donations for our monthly raffle. AT THE MEETING on the 8th January members had great concerns regarding anti-social behaviour that is happening on the footpath that runs at the back of the Game Cock Pub and lindsay road to the tommy simpson Playing field. our secretary is to get in touch with the relevant agencies, residents should not be frightened to go into their gardens. FINALLY, THE COMMITTEE
would like to wish everybody a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
THE NEXT MEETING will take Place tuesday 5th February 2013, starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire road Community Centre. everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make harworth/bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make new friends and learn some new facts in the process. refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take place. We would particularly welcome anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. – so please come and join us.

Bassetlaw MEANS BUSINESS BASSETLAW’S FIRST BEXPO
event will be on tuesday, 14th may 2013 at retford town hall, bringing with it a unique forum for businesses in and around the region to meet, trade and conduct business. A non-profit event, bexpo aims to raise awareness that bassetlaw is a great place to do business whilst also providing local b2b and b2C companies with high profile exposure. Plus, with free entry and a variety of stand sizes available at sensible prices for exhibitors, it’s an event providing opportunities to businesses of all sizes, large or small. Kicking off with pre-show breakfast networking at 7.30am, the exhibition opens at 9.30am and closes at 7.00pm with a viP drinks reception for exhibitors. Under the umbrella of bassetlaw business Focus, three local businesses Createinn, Focus Accounting and the best of retford and the best of Worksop, have collaborated to organise an event that will transform retford town hall into a one stop business shop consisting of: • over sixty exhibitors, including a dedicated food hall for local food producers and retailers • Free seminars from four keynote speakers on the stage • A breakfast networking event with retford b4b business Club • Free speed networking events throughout the day • one-to-one Q&A sessions held in ‘the lounge’ • An all-day café • Competitions, awards, prizes and a goody bag • A viP evening drinks reception with entertainment 10 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY
With the launch of its biggest & best business exhibition,
BEXPO on 14th May 2013 ”We’re absolutely delighted to be able to finally announce that bassetlaw’s first bexpo will be taking place in may of this year, as usually local businesses have to travel to cities for expo events of this kind,” explains Alison leckenby from the best of retford and the best of Worksop. “bassetlaw plays host to so many well respected businesses itself, so we thought it was about time that they were acknowledged and celebrated right on their doorstep to show that we mean business here too, and the bexpo is the perfect
forum,” Claire Weingaertner, of Focus Accounting, continues. Jon rogers of Createinn adds: “We’ve worked hard to make sure that free entry for visitors, reasonably priced exhibitors’ stands and a range of sponsorship opportunities means that there are a variety of ways that businesses can take part, and i’m excited to confirm that this will now be an annual event for bassetlaw.” For more information about Bexpo or for details regarding visiting, exhibiting and sponsorship packages, please visit www.b-expo.co.uk
Harworth Firefighters 2012 WAS A very quiet year at
harworth Fire station, with calls down by 150 against this time last year. Never the less, harworth and surrounding areas has still had the appliance ready and available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, which is a tribute to the staff, as they all have other full time employment as well as being a part of the 22 strong firefighter team. harworth has recruited a new member this year – Jack rowland. he is currently undertaking his basic training and will be riding the appliance early in the new year. Jack replaces firefighter ian tuite who resigned this year following 12 Years’ service. he was a very valued member of the station and his skills and knowledge will be missed but we wish him all the very best in his new
employment and thank him for his superb efforts and commitment. A huge career milestone was reached this year by our longest serving firefighter steven Croasdale, who has now been serving at harworth for 30 years – Congratulations steve and i’m sure there are a few years left in you… looking into 2013, the firefighters at harworth will continue to give there all both operationally and with their continued community work in schools. this will be not only in harworth but in the whole of their station area. Anyone with any fire related concerns please contact Watch manager terry rose at your local fire station.

Fund-raising Race Night
at Harworth FC HARWORTH COLLIERY FC
approach 2013 with lots of positives but also lots of new challenges. the Football Club and all the teams that fall under its umbrella are doing well, with the 1st team setting the standard for all, and currently lie 3rd in the Central midlands North league. the team has lost just 3 games all season and hope to push on and finish as high as possible, we have ambitions to progress but significant investment into the Club and the grounds would be needed. the sports and social Club (Pavilion) have already had to make a significant investment for the future, as for the first time in decades the Pit no longer will supply electricity to the Club. We would like to thank UK Coal (and british Coal before it) for all their support, but times have unfortunately changed, and so we must look

forward and with the help of eclipse solar and considerable outlay from the Pavilion the club has made itself sustainable and self sufficient once more through solar Panels being fitted. the Club would also like to thank eclipse solar for sponsoring our Under 12’s. the money that has been invested has been done through the Clubs savings which needs to be replaced and we are currently looking at Grants through organisations such as Football Foundation and Notts Council. Not for hand outs but to enable us to progress and make ourselves even more self sufficient, so
FRIDAY 8th February at the Welfare Hall Whitehouse Road Bircotes
we can look to the future with excitement. so fundraising is high on the agenda and we have a race Night planned for February 8th in the Welfare hall. We are making this a club event and want as many supporting the event as possible, be that through sponsoring a horse or attending the night. All are welcome including Parents and players from our Junior teams, it is free to enter so what do you have to lose (apart from picking the wrong horses).

A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Neil Bellamy.
Don’t advertise your stuff to thieves IT IS OFTEN said that “it pays to
advertise” and a quick look at tv or any newspaper or magazine proves the truth of that old adage. but when it comes to your personal property, you home, your identity, your belongings and your vehicle, advertising certainly isn’t the best policy. We all have a part to play in keeping crime down and you should never advertise your personal stuff to thieves. this is the first in a series of articles aimed at keeping crime down and keeping you and your belongings safe. many crimes are a spur of the moment thing with thieves taking advantage of an open window, valuables left on display in a car, or an unlocked shed or garage. but simple, inexpensive and common sense precautions can make a real difference. Not securing your home, your car, your belongings or your identity just isn’t worth the cost – or the hassle it will bring. Firstly: securing your home: statistics show that a home with little or no security is more than five times more likely to be burgled than a home with good security, so secure your home – and put off thieves. Here’s a simple check list:
i’ve checked all the doors and
windows are locked, even though
22 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

doors. (burglars hate them because you need a key to open them from the inside as well as the outside.

Keep you computer away from windows, if you need to carry your laptop with you don’t draw attention to it – a rucksack is a good disguise rather than a computer case.
i’ve installed a visible burglar alarm
Keep PiNs, passwords and personal financial information safe. Don’t send bank details by email or store them in your computer. back up your work regularly, keep the disks separate from your computer and when ordering goods over the internet be sure the company has a secure server.

all the windows. (burglars don’t like breaking glass because it makes a noise and there is a risk of leaving forensic evidence. and i turn it on whenever i leave the house.
i haven’t hidden a spare key outside
or in the shed and i’ve left the lights and radio on a timer for the evening when i’m out so it looks as though i’m in.

the garden. there is a good fence, the gate is padlocked, the garden shed is locked and i haven’t left ladders & tools outside for a thief to use.
i haven’t left cash and personal
documents lying around for a thief to take.
remember, thieves love computers. As well as the cash they can get from selling them, computers often contain personal information they can use to commit fraud.
Finally, insurance – get it or regret it. it’s cheaper than paying out to replace your stolen belongings. AND – mark your important and expensive property with your postcode and house number using a security marker pen. it’s also a good idea to keep a record of the make, model and serial number of your valuable items. For all of you that weren’t there and there aren’t many of you...you missed a grand night out...it was all happening at the Ukrainian Club in Doncaster – yes - i speak true - that was a great evening 5th January .... the club was stuffed to bursting with a very upbeat crowd who all turned out to support the album launch of rita Payne who were supported by steve Womack (bawtry based comedian and singer-songwriter, who is always good value, very funny and very irreverent – well i really mean - rude) and the boisterous band ‘13 women’ whose name is a little misleading – they were in fact three blokes and a wash-board. rita Payne are one of the best things to come out of Doncaster in 2012. i say ‘are’ because they are a duo, like 13 Women, their name is a bit misleading….a duo in the style of the Civil Wars, Mumford and sons (Americana / Country / new folk?) watch out for them in the future – they will be playing The rock, Maltby in the spring.
of race horses and also portraits. Notable highlights are works by renoir, Chagall, Paula rego and Anthony Gross. edgar holloway (born in mexborough in 1914) is represented by a couple of prints including an exquisite self portrait as an extremely handsome young man. A new exhibition ‘sparkle and spin’ begins on 16 February www.doncaster.gov. uk/museums An exciting new artist-lead venture is beginning in Doncaster calling itself ArtFuel, it will be providing studio space for artists and craft makers, running art-workshops for the public and providing an exhibition space and shop. ArtFuel is based in an office building on trafford Way opposite the green and blue Nhs surgery. Good parking. Arts Council supported. The stanley & Audry Burton Gallery.
Further afield at the stanley and Audrey burton Gallery, leeds University (ls2 9Jt) is Christopher P Wood’s exhibition ‘Unseen Works’ – he is an intriguing painter who i particularly admire. his landscapes are full of strange, atmospheric and surrealistic occurrences, plus he works in beautiful colours. if you are in leeds before 23 march it is worth a trip to the University Gallery.

harworth & bircotes town Council - February 2013 Be A GOOD NeiGHBOUr JANUARY BROUGHT with it
several snowfalls, which makes life difficult for all of us. life can then become particularly difficult for the disabled and elderly, especially those without support from close relatives. so a knock on their door, or a phone call, help with shopping – all are little things that can make a huge difference to those who are less fit and able. Do you know someone who might need a little help?
POLiCiNG iN HArWOrTH AND BirCOTes Paddy tipping, the new Police Commissioner for Nottinghamshire, visited our community in January. he walked the patch with Cllr. Dave Challinor, who represents bassetlaw on the Police Commissioning Panel. Paddy then met with some of your local Councillors to discuss the problems we have with crime – he went away fully informed!
POLiCe sUrGeries: i met with Detective inspector Wilson last month; he is keen to make our local population – including criminals –very aware that C.i.D. officers are working in our town. he is determined to crack down on crime, and wants to hold regular surgeries so that the public can work with C.i.D. to help catch those who make life a misery for the rest of us. Detective inspector Wilson understands that some people want to help the Police but are intimidated by local thugs and fear recrimination; he is therefore planning to hold surgeries is such a way that anyone talking to the Police can do so safely and confidentially. more information will soon be available, and this town Council will be happy to assist in any way we can. 26 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY
C.C.T.v.
i am told that C.C.t.v. will be installed in our Community sometime this year. the Police assure me this will happen, and i know bassetlaw District Council see harworth and bircotes as a key rural area for this development; your local District Councillors have been asking for C.C.t.v. for several years. hopefully the funding will be sufficient to install the appropriate number of cameras; i know the Police have identified several ‘hotspots’ where they feel they should be situated.
sOMe GOOD NeWs.... Nottinghamshire County Council has informed this Council that they want to continue with the lengthsman scheme, which was successfully piloted by us, and included several smaller nearby Parish Councils. County will continue to fund the scheme for another year; no doubt they would like to see more Parishes across Nottinghamshire involved, working together to tackle jobs as and when they need doing, instead of having to wait for County workmen to appear.
COUNCiL TAX AND THe PreCePT. You will remember that last month i wrote about the reduced Council tax base (number of households classified as paying the full amount) due to Government changes affecting the rules on how it is calculated. i also
pointed out this will mean less income for District, town and Parish Councils. We now know that harworth and bircotes town Council will have £5000 less income this next financial year. i have reviewed our financial position, and am happy to report that i will be recommending to Council that we do Not raise the Precept; we will simply have to be as frugal as everyone else in these difficult times.
CHANGes TO WeLFAre AND BeNeFiTs the Government has introduced several changes to the benefits system, and to the criteria for who qualifies for what e.g. Universal Credits, bedroom tax; Government has also forced District Councils to install their own local Council tax benefits scheme. bassetlaw District Council took the decision to protect residents as much as possible – we have 5000 low income working age families in bassetlaw - and manage the 10% drop in funding with as little financial hardship as possible. our scheme also means that pensioners and those with severe disability will not suffer any restrictions to liabilities whatsoever. You can get advice from Bassetlaw District Council about any changes to the Benefits system that affects you. June evans Chair of Harworth and Bircotes Town Council

Please don’t steal our grit
DURING PERIOD OF snow and ice like we have experienced in January we have had a grit bin installed to ensure that public places can be treated quickly and easily and made safer for all residents. i was disappointed to discover therefore that members of the public had been taking the grit in this bin for use on their own paths and drives. this is not a public supply and taking it for your own use is stealing. let’s hope we don’t receive any more really bad weater this year but if we do please purchase your own grit and leave that which is in the grit bin for the purpose for which it was intended. sTeve BOWMAN executive Officer.
