GreenFayre Gifts & Homeware of Rossington has recently had the honour of winning the Sine FM Biz Juice award for 2012. Owner Julie accepted the award live on air early in December. Here Julie provides us with the background to the shops success and how it all started: GreenFayre began after finding ourselves repeatedly frustrated at the lack of inspiration on the high street - gift ideas for our friends & family had seemed the same, year in - year out & we struggled to find something new that grabbed our attention and was reasonably priced. Prompted by the fact that we had recently become self-employed with our new company we decided to take the opportunity to look further afield and promptly fell in love with some beautiful products. Our first stock order of less than £200 was placed & we held an 'Open Day' at home in July 2011, to introduce friends & family to the Fair Trade, handcrafted items we had carefully chosen. Encouraged by their superb response, we embarked on the relentless journey to build GreenFayre, using every spare hour possible to promote our ever-growing ranges through social networking, monthly 'Open Days' at home, local markets and Craft/Gift Fairs and leaflet drops, as well as learning (very quickly!) how to build and run an E-commerce website. Amazingly, less than a year later, the first GreenFayre 'Bricks & Mortar' shop was opened in Rossington, and our customer base is still growing every week, both locally and through our website www.GreenFayre.co.uk and our facebook/twitter pages. GreenFayre is very proud and grateful to have just celebrated 6 months of trading from our new shop premises and with many more plans and ideas for growth, we are extremely excited at the prospect of what's to come. Our newest service is hand delivered, same day gifts Our aim is to provide a unique selection of products to make you 'ooh', 'aah' and smile, and with this in mind we have compiled a mix of carefully sourced gifts & homewares which are all as the GreenFayre motto states: Fair Trade, Handcrafted, Recycled & Battery Free! We would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who was kind enough to vote for us in the Sine FM ‘Simply Fred’ BizJuice Awards. We are over the moon to be able to say that we won! Our trophy is now proudly displayed in store for you all to see! Visit us just off King Avenue in Rossington, to sample our mix of reasonably priced products. We look forward to welcoming you soon

All our designs are created from freshly selected flowers of the best quality. With over 25 years experience, We can offer modern, contemporary or the more traditionalarrangements to suit your every need.

Methodist ministers festive message I GREW UP in a house that had very few books, with the exception of the bible. Unlike my wife who grew up surrounded by books, who on family holidays spent hours in secondhand bookshops whilst her parents browsed the shelves, I never had that joy of encountering literary delights.

I have made up for it since as our house is filled with books on a variety of subjects, and now I have ventured on my birthday into the world of e-books. It is 75 years since the publication of a book that is now the subject of a trilogy of films, the first being released shortly in the UK. It is of course the book The Hobbit, the film’s first part is entitled ‘An unexpected journey’. The tale of bilbo baggins who is dragged from the comfort of his home and thrust into a dangerous

set of adventures with strange people and even more bizarre creatures is a story worth getting your hands on, no matter what age you are. As we celebrate Christmas and take tentative steps into a New Year, we encounter in the bible an even more extraordinary ‘ unexpected journey’, that of God coming to adventure with us in Jesus. In facing life’s twists and turns, joys and sorrows, hope and despair, we have someone who shares all of this with us each step of the way. No matter how ‘unexpected’ the journeys we have and will take in Jesus we have a companion not just for now but always. May you and yours have a Peaceful, Joyful and safe Christmas and New Year. rev. Jim Magee 

Tickhill & District Lions update CAN I START by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 11th of December. To the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we helped Santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. community FROM THE PRIORITY Setting

meeting held on October 10th 2012 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority

survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighbourhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :-

Police continue to tackle garage Burglaries & Autocrime OVER THE PAST 2 months Nottinghamshire Police have used various methods to prevent and detect crime in particular Shed/ Garage burglaries and Autocrime in the Harworth and bircotes area, which includes offender management from CID and several warrants being carried out in the area. Cre mark Property marking has continued to be used at properties which have been subject to burglary others and also the neighbouring properties next to attacked premises where valuables such as Power tools and lawnmowers have been marked up.

Shed Alarms are also being distributed to vulnerable properties where the Harworth and bircotes Town Council are in the process of purchasing more shed alarms for the community. There have been 2 recent incidents where shed alarms which have been installed at properties were activated which deterred offenders who got away with nothing due to the alarms being activating. The recent activity has already had an impact and so far burglary Other and Autocrime offences have reduced significantly in the area.

community Don’t leave a present for Santa Claws this Christmas

A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Neil Bellamy.

Take care of your presents – or a thief will I HOPE YOU all had a really lovely

Christmas and, more importantly, a safe Christmas. And can I now wish everyone a happy, prosperous and crime free New Year. I bet you all received lots of lovely presents from Santa Claus, a new lap top perhaps, a mobile phone, a shiny new bike or the latest electronic gadget. Perhaps Santa brought you a sat nav for the car, a new camera, a tablet computer or an e-reader. Whatever Santa brought you this Christmas – a thief would love to take it away. So, if you want to keep on enjoying you Christmas gifts take good care of them – before a thief does. You are probably still enjoying your festive break, but thieves and burglars never take a break, and if you are not careful it will be a thief who is enjoying your presents in the New Year rather than you. And there are lots of things you can do to make sure your Christmas presents do not find their way into the hands of a thief. First and foremost, don’t leave things lying around. Don’t leave your mobile phone on a pub table or on the desk at school, and never leave your sat nav and other valuables on

22 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

the dashboard of your car. You wouldn’t dream of leaving £100 on the dashboard of your car and expect it to be there when you return, so why leave your sat nav there? make a note of your new mobile phone’s ImEI number. This can be obtained by dialling *#06# on your mobile. Then, if your phone is stolen, call your service provider with this number and they will quickly put a block on the phone. It won’t get you your phone back, but at least it stops anyone else using it and stops the thief selling it, because people won’t buy a phone that doesn’t work. You should do this every time you get a new mobile and with every mobile in your house. Then take steps to protect the things that stay in your home. Invest in a Uv marker pen and mark all your property that might be attractive to a thief. The pens are very inexpensive, and you should mark your property with your postcode and your house number. This assists us to return property to its rightful owner when we recover stolen property. Extra protection can be gained by registering your property with Immobilise, the UK National Property Register or using Cre mark for larger

Details can be found at http:// www.immobilise.com/ and http:// www.creproducts.co.uk/shop/default. asp Finally, don’t make it easy for a thief to get into your home. Even when you are in the house, drop the latch if you have a Yale type lock or lock the door and leave the key in the lock– so you can get out in an emergency. make sure all the windows are secure, particularly downstairs windows or windows above a flat roof. most thieves are opportunists and they are always on the look out for easy pickings. And they are experts at spotting open windows and an insecure home. So, keep one step ahead of them, keep your property safe and your home secure. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy your lovely Christmas presents for many years to come. For further information contact your safer Neighbourhood Team Beat Manager PC2752 Jim Martin 07776460406. 

and see in the area.

The Rock Folk Club in maltby kicks off in its new guise with Folk for a Fiver on 11 January followed on Friday 25 January by local folk heroes Ray Hearne and Ciaran boyle. Ray, one time steelworker has been writing and performing for many years, involved in amongst other things the bbC radio ballads. Ciaran, although living in South Yorkshire spent every summer of his childhood with family in Ireland where he learnt to play the bodhran. He and Ray spark with fun, play together beautifully and for my money Ciaran will sing you a heart-rending Irish lament as good as anyone. One of the brilliant things about musicians playing local gigs is the friends and family that also make up the audience in this case its very noisy, supportive and there is plenty of singing – when Ciaran forgets his words the audience (AKA his mum) carry the song on ! Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - January 2013 THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTING Extravaganza went well, many families attended, and Father Christmas was very popular with the children. Thanks go to everyone who was involved in making this a success.  A NeW YeAr So now we face the New Year – what will 2013 bring? We know one thing it will not bring is any more money – the amalgamation of six different benefits into the one Universal Credit will, it is thought, result in a 10% cut in income to many families in the next financial year, which starts in April. At least the elderly are protected. Changes to the rules affecting Council Tax will also change; one outcome is that the Council Tax base (the number of houses paying full Council Tax) will reduce, therefore less money will be collected/go to Councils, and for the first time this includes Parish/Town Councils. Result: some services will be reduced – there simply won’t be enough money to fund them. I can assure you that important services, such as your rubbish collection, will continue. 

WHAT YOU COMPLAiN ABOUT - PArKiNG! Parking in Disabled bays – please don’t do this if you are not disabled; no blue badge means you will be asked to move your car. Parking Across Pavements. mums with prams or pushchairs should not have to step out into the road because a car/ lorry is blocking the pavement, and nor should people on mobility scooters or pedestrians. It is dangerous, and it is a traffic offence. We all understand that motorists park on pavements to allow normal road traffic flow, but it should not be at the expense of pedestrians. 26 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

Parking on the Shop Fronts continues to cause problems. Even though there is a car park nearby at your Town Hall some drivers insist on parking illegally on the pavement. Some are stupid enough to reverse onto the roundabout, or selfishly next to traffic islands and obstruct the traffic flow. Why do they do this? -because they can, and it is convenient for them, regardless of others using the pavement. Try asking them not to do this, and you just get verbal abuse. Another issue is the pedestrian crossing opposite the Health Centre; many of you have said you feel unsafe using it, especially as you cannot be clearly seen by oncoming drivers, due to parked vehicles nearby. Drivers leaving Church lane face a similar problem; their view is obstructed because of parked cars.

sO WHAT CAN We DO ABOUT iT? bassetlaw District Council has engaged a firm of designers to produce an overview of road improvements; the District Council has also discussed our traffic problems with Notts. County Council, who are preparing a plan and costing up the work – as ever, funding will be an issue, but I am hopeful that eventually the money will be found. In the meantime, Harworth and bircotes Town Council will continue to send photographs of parking problems along main Street, Grosvenor Road and Scrooby Road to bassetlaw Council, along with our request for a traffic warden. I will also be talking to the Police about ‘what else’ we can do.

UK Coal. many of you will have noticed the work going on near the rear entrance to the colliery site on the blyth Road, near Harworth Crossroads. UK Coal is working on the balancing ponds there; the plan is that the pond nearest the main drain will be disconnected from the other ponds, and will take only the surface water from the new housing development to be built along the lower part of Scrooby Road. AlDI has held a public consultation about their proposal to build on the field opposite the Fire Station. I have asked that they discuss with Highways the possibility of a pedestrian crossing, so that parents could use the AlDI car park and then walk the short distance to the school.  Shed burglaries: the Police have funded the purchase of Shed Alarms, which can be bought from the Community Information Centre at £10 each. You can also ‘loan’ marker pens for a small, returnable deposit. bassetlaw District Council’s Community Park Ranger will be carrying out high visibility patrols on and around the area at Tommy Simpson playing field over the coming months. The aim is to bring about a reduction to the problem of dog fouling on site. The Park Ranger carries fixed penalty tickets at all times, and failure to clean up after your dog can result in a ticket being issued.

Planning applications - the facts PLANNING APPLICATIONS. MANY people ask about this topic,

so I thought it timely to present a few facts about the Consultation Process, as provided by the Planning Dept. at bassetlaw District Council. 1. The opportunity to comment arises following registration of the planning application. All residents have the opportunity to comment on developments once the application has been submitted to District Council, however, only adjoining homeowners are notified when the application has been registered. 2. There are some things that will not normally be taken into consideration when determining an application, including the perceived impact on property values and loss of view. All comments should be received before the stated deadline. 28 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

3. For the majority of planning permissions, conditions are imposed to mitigate any potential negative impact on matters such as local amenity, character, appearance, design, highway safety, etc. When commenting on a given application, you may wish to suggest potential conditions (such as the type of roofing material, type of brick, or fencing material). Whilst bassetlaw District Council will consider any such suggestions, it may not be possible to impose certain conditions if they are considered unreasonable or duplicate other legislation. 4. Anonymous comments will not be taken into account – the planning file is a public file, so your comments will be available for viewing by the public. Should you not wish to have your name included in the

process, please contact your local Councillor who will make comments on your behalf in his or her name. Want to know more? Look at the District Council web pages: http:/www.bassetlaw.gov. uk/planning and building/ development control/commenting on applications.aspx Cllr June evans Chair Harworth & Bircotes Town Council 
