“spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.” ~ Al Bernstein
June already! How this year is flying by. As I write this the sun is shining but as yet we have seen little sunshine this year, although the early May Bank Holiday Monday was a rare treat. I was lucky enough to visit Hodsock Priory so see the beautiful bluebells and make the most of the warmth. June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only fun events, but valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. The July issue will be delivered during the last few days of June, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 14th June.
Best wishes, Paula x

Petrol Station News regarding the Asda Petrol station harworth; Asda are please to say that the pipes are in place for the new Petrol station and are just waiting for the building work to begin. they do anticipate that it will open at the end of september / beginning of october however this is only an estimated timescale for when the work will be completed. the purpose of the dog control order consultation is to establish what the main issues are with dogs within Bassetlaw. After the
consultation period has ended the results will be inputted into a survey data base and then a report will be produced. From the results of the survey BDC will then decide which dog control orders they will be introducing.
Dog Warden the dog wardens working hours are 8.40am-5pm. however, if there is a particular problem with a particular offender e.g. dog walkers allowing their dogs foul he can start a bit earlier. officers in the environmental health Department also undertake patrols throughout Bassetlaw so if there is a particular problem please let the department know and arrangements can be made for a patrol to take place. (tel: 01909 533219). As the dog warden is always on standby to collect strays during his working hours he can be called away at a moment’s notice. the dog warden does microchip dogs

Please contact the environmental health admin tel: 01909 533219 for more details. if residents are allowing their dogs to foul and they are witnessed by an authorised officer they will be issued with a fixed penalty notice. if there are particular day and times where people regularly walk their dogs and allow them to foul please get in touch with our admin and arrangements will be made for patrols to take place. if people are not in control of their dogs the animal can be considered a stray and if the dog warden collects the animal the dog will be kennelled and the owner will have to pay a reclamation fee. if there are particular dates and times where the dogs are being let out, get in touch with the environmental health and they will attempt to have some patrols in the area. Bassetlaw District Council has only one dog warden who cover the whole of the district if he is called away to collect a stray, patrols occasionally have to be abandoned.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

At Bircotes town hall village ventures staged 5 events for the public this year, music and theatre playing to over 400 people. the town hall put on plays by 2 theatre companies doing work specifically for children Kids Carpet and theatre rites: two shows each playing to four local schools. in september Puppet state theatre Company will be putting on the man Who Planted trees, again to four local primary schools these events, free to the schools, are funded by harworth and Bircotes town Council. At the public events we run a licensed bar whose profit, together with a raffle, either helps to fund the plays put on for the local primary schools or we support a charity – this year we have sent more than £375 to oxfam, Comic relief and Bassetlaw mind. thank you to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes and behind the bar, thank you to taylors of tickhill for supplying the bar stock and glasses and finally to everyone who turned out and supported us this year and to Notts County Council who run the scheme, supported by Bassetlaw District Council with grant funding from Arts Council england which makes the ticket price our audience pay very reasonable. We have had some terrific evenings. Baltic Crossing, our last concert, plenty of instruments played by five musicians ( a Dane, two Fins and two from our own Northern shores) who all met in the sibelius Conservatoire in Finland brought the house down. the thunderous applause at the end summed up the evening, eighty people just having a thoroughly good time and listening to some really funny guys playing some wonderful music. Now then – i have two exhibitions to recommend. if you see nothing else all month i urge you to go and 8 8

Garden View
Express Yourself at a time when i’m making preparations for my summer holidays and browsing through pictures of tropical locations, i can’t help but compare them with the images of england that i hold in my mind. it wasn’t until i visited america last year, that i realised how very english we are, and how we really do live up to the stereotype we’ve been given. i wouldn’t say i’m a shrinking violet when it comes to confidence, but i really did feel quite reserved. As a nation, i don’t think we’re very good at expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our emotions, and whilst i’m not advocating yelling at random people in the street because “your dust cart is blocking my parking lot” or applauding in the cinema (both of which i experienced whilst over there last year), i do think that when it comes to gardens we are, in the main, a little unadventurous. in
fact, i would go as far as to say that a striped lawn and three borders are as traditional as our sunday roast! But fear not, it doesn’t have to be this way. expressing yourself outdoors needn’t mean exposing your inner most secrets, but i do think your outdoor space should reflect your personality. the residents at Bestall towers are generally neat and tidy (in fact clutter makes my head hurt), so my garden reflects this with its simple straight lines, well ordered borders, immaculate patio, and perfect lawn! so what does my garden say about me? i’m a clean freak, with an obsession for perfection and a need to control my environment … pretty accurate i’d say. so what does your garden say about

‘The Lions Abroad’
This month i thought i would bring you a bit of an international flavour. The Lions strive to help local communities all over the world.
First of all let’s take a trip to massachusetts in America where a lions club spent three weeks removing debris from the miller river after trees collapsed into it after a major storm. After a lot of hard work the river was cleared making it a safe environment for river users and nature lovers alike. moving on to romania where, for the last 5 years a group of lions have been arranging an annual camp for children with diabetes. the camp is a haven where the children can feel accepted. they have the chance to swim, dance, make crafts and importantly make new friends. the lions from oradea raise funds through organising many events including concerts and dances. moving swiftly on to hungary another group of lions in a place called miskolc support a local guide
dog school. instead of adopting the traditional method of fund raising for cash donations they took some guide dogs to the local pet store where patrons were encouraged to buy and donate dog food, tools and other supplies. Finally, moving onto the city of oslo. the lions created the biggest book sale in Norway since 1976. Forty five thousand books split into 30 categories were offered for sale. the proceeds went to many good causes including youth sports, scouts, outings for senior citizens and schools and orphanages in Ghana. if you want more details of any of these initiatives you can view the Lions Magazine at the following website. http://www. lionsclubs.org/eN/news-andevents/lion-magazine/index.php. Back to Tickhill and a big thank you to those people who supported us at the scarecrow festival and a reminder to seek us out at Bawtry, Wadworth or Tickhill Gala’s. T

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare. We passed on some questions to the practice, the following is their response. You suggested, we listened and where possible made the following alterations to our practice Q. Music in waiting room at Tickhill. • Various studies have been conducted and these show in the majority of people they are more positive. • Obviously, the selection of music needs to be considered which is why we try to only play easy listening/middle of the road music. • Background music also has the benefit of masking patients’ conversations with reception staff. • Regarding the volume of music, reception staff monitor this to ensure that it does not become too obtrusive. Q. automatic door closure at Tickhill • We have looked at options available and are actively trying to manage the situation given the weight of this fire door.
The PPG thanks the practice for this response. Updates • Doncaster NHS is now in place. • This practice is now registered with CQC. (Care Quality Commission) • The number of appointments not attended in our practice still averages 2 per day or 10 per week. Please help us to get people an appointment by reducing this waste
• We are looking to address this with a dedicated notice board and relocating the internal repeat prescription box. Q. old magazines in waiting room • Magazines are kindly brought in by patients however, we will dispose of older titles. Q. Why can’t we be told if doctors are running late? • We will ask reception staff to monitor this and advice waiting patients accordingly, but their priority is dealing with the patient at the reception desk. Q. Can there be a list of duty Chemists on the door at Harworth Primary Care Centre • We will pass this to the Building management meeting as we are only tenants within this building. Q. Put the number of missed appointments on information Board • We circulate information to the PPG and place on the notice board, however, that’s not seen by those who don’t attend. Q. do any of the doctors have private patients? • No
Q. Move prescription box to entrance hall at Tickhill
Q. Please send text message reminders/phone messages for medical reviews i.e. diabetes checks
Q. Could the PPG information on the notice board be made more prominent?
• We will look at options for this, but in the meantime please register consent to receive text messages from us.

Antisocial behaviour is any type of inconsiderate or unacceptable behaviour that damages the quality of people’s lives. it includes problems such as disruptive or abusive neighbours, abandoned cars, antisocial drinking, vandalism, begging, graffiti, litter and nuisance behaviour. the legal definition of antisocial behaviour is ‘behaviour by a person which causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more other persons not of the same household as the perpetrator’. A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Neil Bellamy.
Cold Callers? Make sure they stay cold. after one of the longest winters and coldest springs on record, many of you will now be enjoying the opportunity to get out into your garden or spring cleaning the outside of your homes after the ravages of winter. And that’s why this time of year always brings an increase in cold callers, bogus workmen and rogue traders. these men – and often women – know every trick in the book to get into your home, but if anyone turns up on your doorstep trying to sell you something or wanting to do some work for you, treat them with extreme caution and Never let them into your home until you are absolutely certain they are genuine. they may ask you if you want your garden tidying, or say they have noticed some loose tiles on your roof. they could tell you your fence needs repairing or ask if you want your driveway paving. they could say they are from “the gas company” or “the water board”, but you should never allow them into your home because they are most likely conmen and women wanting to do a little work for a lot of money or simply wanting to get into your home to see what they can steal. 22 22
often their victims are the elderly and the vulnerable, but they can strike anywhere, and they know all the tricks and all the answers because many have been practising the same routines around the country for years, As i said, you should never allow anyone into your home until you are absolutely certain they are who they say they are. And, if you are concerned, or if they refuse to go away, tell them you are calling the police – and Do it. All genuine officials carry proper identification cards. Ask them to show you their identification through a window before you open the door and if you are still uncertain, ring the company they claim to be from and ask if they have representatives in your area. Genuine callers will be happy to wait or return later once their identification has been properly checked. And Never use a telephone number given to you by the caller as you could simply be ringing a colleague of theirs waiting round the corner. Use the phone book or directory enquiries to get the number of the company they claim to be from. legitimate traders do not need to ‘cold call’ to sell their products, and anyone selling anything door to door should be treated with extreme suspicion.

PCSO9634 Kendra Jacob 07525226555 so, if your doorbell rings, stop and think. Ask yourself: ‘Am i expecting anyone to call’ before opening the door to strangers. remember, bogus officials and cold callers are very plausible people. they are out to trick you, so make sure you don’t become their next victim. it’s up to you to keep cold callers where they deserve to be – out in the cold. other simple precautions you can take include using a door viewer so you can see who is calling. Fit a door chain, and keep the chain on when you first open the door. And, don’t keep large amounts of cash in you home. And, by signing up to Nottinghamshire Polices’ Neighbourhood Alert service, you will receive alerts about bogus callers if they are operating in your area and any other crime in your area. harworth & Bircotes town Council - JUNe 2013 Fly Tipper. someone dumped rubbish on the field that lies between sandrock and Amanda road, and which is accessed from Greenwood Avenue or oxford Drive. that person has been caught and fined £55. Another fly tipper left rubbish on land near snipe Park Wood – Council will bring charges.
Litter Louts. occupants of a car parked in the Council car park on the evening of Friday 26th April decided to offload their drinks cans by throwing them out of the car window. this was witnessed by three town residents, who took the car registration and reported the incident; CCtv cameras provided further evidence, and Council is prosecuting.
Good News: Notts. County Council have agreed to put parking restrictions on main street, old harworth; we don’t yet have any details on what these will be, but hopefully they will make life better for people living in that area.
All Saints Church several of the steps leading up to the church were becoming a little unstable and therefore a problem. Under the lengthsman scheme, all the steps have been lifted and reset by our staff - they are now safe, look much better, and this work was done at no cost to the Council.
The Public Realm two new benches have been installed on the front of the shopping parade; new planters will follow. A ‘Free Parking’ sign is in place to encourage drivers to use the car park, not the pavement, and 24 24
more dog/litter bins will appear in our town. the intention is to have amenities that you can appreciate, and that will continue to improve the local environment. one well known and much respected resident in our community has suggested flower beds, this time at harworth Crossroads; they will be in place shortly. Another resident has asked for dog bins on Devonshire road – we are happy to oblige – and a replacement seat will be installed near old harworth post office. i have noticed more people picking up dog mess and using the bins, and we are happy for you to tell us where more are needed.
Snipe Park Wood harworth and Bircotes town Council has for some time been asking Bassetlaw District Council to give us and the people of this community snipe Park Wood. Why? – Because we believe we can improve it, maintain it and take necessary interventions when required... plus it is an area that should be enjoyed by the local population, not just the vandals who are currently destroying it. if the transfer of ownership goes ahead, this Council can apply to several organisations for funds
to make improvements, whereas the District Council cannot. We would hope to have in place a ‘stewardship scheme’ and make the wood a friendly habitat for wildlife, trees and flora, as well as an asset that everyone can enjoy.
Planning Applications the District Council Planning meeting in may was attended by more than 20 residents from harworth and Bircotes. the application by Jones homes to build 118 houses on scrooby road was passed, as was the application by AlDi; the latter being subject to addressing potential noise and light pollution affecting residents living in Galway mews, plus ensuring jobs are offered to local people. my thanks go to all those people who made the effort to travel to retford town hall to show their support for these new developments in our town. Persimmon Builders tell me they will shortly be submitting their application to build houses at the top of Bawtry road.
Looking to the Future We know harworth and Bircotes is the main growth settlement for Bassetlaw; this includes development for housing, retail and Commercial Business.

community community Housing: we know private housing development is planned, but what about Council housing (now referred to as social housing or Affordable housing)? We have several issues - waiting lists, a growing number of elderly, and some sub-standard housing. • I want to see more Bungalows – but viewed by developers as ‘land hungry’; yet few people want to live in multioccupancy accommodation. • We know there is a scarcity of 2 bedroom houses – and will the demand grow because of the bedroom tax? • Sub-standard (Airey) Houses are long overdue for replacement; doing this is a major project. Bassetlaw District Council wants to address these issues and is currently drawing up plans to do just that. Gathering accurate information is a challenge e.g. waiting lists – some retired people tend to put their name forward for a bungalow ‘just in case’ because they know the wait is long and their need for a bungalow may well be greater when eventually offered accommodation – so identifying actual need is difficult, even before factoring in the expected rise in the older population and accompanying demand for suitable accommodation.
Retail Outlets: are more than just supermarkets; we need a variety of shopping choices. vacant shops currently stand at 18%; Council is trying to make the area more attractive, the predicted growth in housing/ population will give more support to local traders, and there are signs of growing retail confidence –e.g. the renovation of the Cinema for retail use, the extension of the Chinese restaurant and the opening

community of the excellent cafe (well done, ladies). But achieving full capacity will take time, and meantime we desperately need a bank. Commercial Business: i know of interest from two developers; if this materialises it will mean more jobs for local people, but business developers are hampered by the current economy. Bassetlaw planners are hopeful and are doing their best to make things happen.
A Growing Community: A Neighbourhood Plan After many years in the wilderness, harworth and Bircotes is now getting the attention it deserves – and about time, too. i welcome this, even though i know growth means change, and change is hard for some to accept, but we have to think about our young people and their future opportunities/quality of life. this Council has therefore opted for a Neighbourhood Plan.
What is a Neighbourhood Plan? it’s a plan to shape future developments for our town. these include new homes, employment land, town Centre development, and local environmental issues such as green areas and local facilities.
Community Involvement there will be consultation with residents. it will be an opportunity to have your say about future development, what you want to see happen.
What are the Benefits? it gives us Neighbourhood Planning Powers – and opportunities to 26 26
deliver the houses/shops/facilities that people want. it encourages residents to put forward their ideas, and it allows the Community to do things differently e.g. purchase a piece of land or building and make it a ‘community asset’.
What Next? h&B Council are at the start of the process and there are a number of hoops to go through; each stage has to be approved, and i will keep you informed of our progress and how you can be involved.
I have a vision for our community; what’s yours? Don’t Forget: the Family Fun Day, sunday 23rd June will be held on the sports ground of the serlby Park
Academy site; the event starts at 1pm and will finish around 5pm

DONCASTER TRIMMERS BENEFITS OF TINTING
• Reduced glare: Tinting your vehicle can drastically reduce glare from the sun, making driving on bright days much safer • Reduced UV: Tinting dramatically reduces UV rays, which are damaging to both you and your car’s interior • Cooling: Tinting can have a cooling effect on your vehicle, allowing a more pleasant drive, and reduce costs associated with running air conditioning • Security: Not only may tinting act as a deterrent, but the tinting film will also hold shattered glass in place, making it difficult for your potential thief to access your valuables • Looks great: Window tinting also looks fantastic, and greatly enhances the appeal of your vehicle
