Being a mum can be hard at times (particularly during half term which is when I am writing this)! However the rewards are many and varied, from the thrill of first steps, to the satisfaction of children spreading their wings as independent young people and then moving on to creating families of their own. As Mother’s Day approaches give a thought for all Mums at whatever stage of motherhood they may be, and don’t forget those around you who no longer have their mums to treat this Mother’s Day. Loki HELLO FROM US all at the Sanctuary. The start of the year has had its ups and downs. We have had quite an influx of dogs and cats coming to us over Christmas which is usual for this time of year. What is unusual is that lots of pedigree dogs are with us for various reasons. We have some beautiful Labradors, German Shepherd and smaller pedigrees all needing loving homes. If you feel you would like to spend your life with a pet whether it be a dog or a cat please call and see us we are open 2-4 during the week and 1-4 at a weekend. Closed on a Tuesday.

If you also have time on your hand and need to get fit can we suggest you come and walk some of our dogs during the day.

Mornings are better before we open or any time on a Tuesday. Of course they over lap but your Health & Fitness level is controlled by your activity levels and your weight is most definitely controlled by your consumption!

The first step of taking control of your weight is by understanding what you’re putting in your body. I’m not

on about complex carbohydrates or your daily amino acids; I’m talking about calories (Kcal’s). Without knowing what you aiming for how do you expect to achieve your aim or goal?

IT IS VERY seldom that children of today receive the praise they deserve so I would like to tell you about a group of pupils from St Patrick’s RC School that recently visited the coffee shop that the TRA hold in Harworth and bircotes Town Hall.

They were very well mannered and well behaved, and they are a credit to their School and the community.

They were a pleasure to serve. 

FLOODiNG REGARDING THE RECENT flooding at the junction of Lindsey Road/beech Road and the footpath that runs along Snipe Park Wood this has been referred to the Drainage Engineer at bassetlaw

District Council and hopefully will be sorted out soon. 

WITH REGARD TO the Antisocial behaviour that has been taking place along the footpath that runs at the back of the Game Cock Pub and Lindsey Road, A1 Housing, along with bDC ASb team are looking into closing the path off but this may take time. 

TRIPS THAT WE are running this year are York on Wednesday 15th May 2013, bridlington Wednesday 14th August 2013 both trips will be £7.00 per person, all money must be paid on booking. To book you can call into the coffee shop we hold in Harwoth and bircotes Town Hall on Thursday Mornings 10.00am -12 noon or call into the Devonshire Road Centre on Tuesday afternoons 2.00-4.00pm. We are looking to run a trip to a Christmas market in Durham in December. 

Weather frustrations for Harworth FC FEBRUARY HAS BEEN a very frustrating month for the club with the majority of games for all our teams falling foul to the poor weather that we have had.

This will certainly mean a busy next few months when all the games will have to be re-arranged but it is something we are geared up for and with all teams having very competitive squads we will approach them with the enthusiasm that has seen us as a club do so well upto present.

First team at the time of writing are third in the table and through to the semi final of the Floodlit cup, the management are positive of a top four finish which at the start of the season seemed a very distant dream, through hard work on and off the field the squad is as good as it has been for sometime and we are seeing more players wanting to return back into the fold which shows how our fortunes have changed for the better.

We would still love to get more people through the gates to follow the team and with more local lads playing there really is no excuse, the weather will soon be improving so we really want you all to get behind the team and help us achieve our goals together.

Reserves have had a change in Management and the club would like to thank Neil Pacskowski for his hard work but he wants to concentrate on playing, so the baton has been passed to Tony Garner and Dave baum, both players from the club so we are promoting from within, we wish them well and with the team well placed for a promotion push and still in two cups it should be an interesting time for the pair of them.

Third team have struggled to acclimatise to a new league and in the main a new team, after struggling in the Autumn they now have a settled team and putting together a good run of results, a mid table finish would be an excellent acheivement given the changes the team has had to go through and will look to build from there for next season.

Under 19’s have been on a great run and for the first time see themselves at the top of the table, they have a great squad and we all hope that they will be the mainstay of the club for years to come, they are very well positioned for a go at the title which

has never been achieved by a Colliery side so history beckons and we all are behind the lads.

Race Night The club would like to thank all those who either sponsored a Race, bought a horse or attended the night as it was a big success raising over £1400, it was great to see All of the teams including our Juniors well represented and it goes a long way to ensuring we have a united club from under 11’s through to our First team, the Club would like to thank beechy, Rob Waite and Committee for organising, ASDA and Pavilion for supplying the prizes and Clay Lane Construction, GD Joinery, Roberts brothers builders, Sassy Salon, GJ Photography and Unicorn Hunters for sponsoring each race, great effort from all.

WRIGGLE WRIGGLE A NEW DANCE craze perhaps?

Well maybe … if you’re a worm that is! In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden.

They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free?

As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre- made version online? Most kids love worms

so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time.

Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato, (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters…they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle). That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding actively in line with their environment. bizarrely they can also change gender to suit the local talent on offer!

The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted at 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too. 

They don’t like extremes in temperature, so I’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which

Does your lawn need some T.L.C? The ground starts to warm now so it’s a good time to repair those bare patches that always appear over winter. Carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out. They’ll germinate in a few days. Don’t mow or feed them until a few weeks have passed and they’re well established.

A MALE FROM the Harworth and bircotes area was arrested for various offences for an incident involving a sword in bircotes on the evening of 12th February 2012, where enquiries are continuing by CID officers. I wish to reiterate and confirm that despite several rumours floating about the Harworth and bircotes area, that nobody was injured or harmed as a result of this incident. OVER THE PAST 2/3 months there has been continued success where there have been a number of arrests in the area in response to the increase in Shed and Dwelling burglaries in the area, investigation and enquiries are

A HARWORTH MALE has been charged with Cultivation of Cannabis at a property in bircotes and was due to appear at Nottingham Crown court on 14th February 2013 for 1st hearing appearance to enter a plea. A MALE FROM the Harworth and bircotes area has been charged with production of Cannabis, Possession of Section 5 Firearm and Abstracting Electricity after a cannabis grow was found at a property in bircotes in December 2012. The Male was due to appear at Worksop Magistrates on 21st February 2013. TWO HARWORTH MALES

have recently been found guilty at Nottingham Crown Court Possession with Intent to Supply Class A and Class b drugs which were from separate unrelated incidents. One of the males will received sentencing in February 2013, the other male will receive sentencing in April 2013.

A MALE FROM the Harworth and bircotes area is due to appear at Worksop Magistrates on 22nd April 2013 for receiving stolen goods in March 2012. THERE HAVE BEEN several cannabis grows found in Harworth and bircotes over the past few months and enquiries are ongoing. The Local Policing Team are encouraging residents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity at properties i.e. large numbers of fluorescent lights and fan units and or plant food is a sign that a cannabis grow may be at a property. 

Police continue to tackle Burglary Other & Autocrime OVER THE PAST 3 months Nottinghamshire Police have used various methods to prevent and detect crime, in particular Shed/

Garage burglaries and Auto crime in the Harworth and bircotes area, which includes offender management from CID and several warrants being carried out in the area. purchasing more shed alarms for the community. There have been 2 recent incidents where shed alarms which have been installed at properties were activated which deterred offenders who got away with nothing due to the alarms being activating.

Your identity – keep it private, keep it safe LAST MONTH, YOU may remember,

I wrote about not “advertising” you property and belongings to a thief.

Well this month, I want to offer some advice on protecting your identity and your personal possessions.

Protect your identity by keeping it private and keeping it safe.

If thieves find out your personal details, they can use them to open bank accounts or obtain credit cards or get loans and benefits in your name. Thieves may also use your details to get documents in your name, like a driving licence or a passport.

The information criminals are after includes your name, date of birth, address, National Insurance number and bank or credit card details. This is valuable information and you should keep these details safe – both online and offline.

Keeping safe online: Protect your computer with the appropriate firewalls and security software. When using a shared computer, always log off after use and clear the history. be sure you know who you are dealing with and do not enter websites through unsolicited emails. Only carry out financial transactions on secure websites. Look for https in the address bar or a padlock symbol on your browser.

Keep passwords and PIN numbers safe. Don’t use the same password for more than one account and never use banking passwords for any other website.

Don’t give too much information on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.

Keeping safe offline: Shred or destroy documents that contain your personal details before you throw them away and don’t leave your post lying around in communal buildings. bills often contain sensitive information so know the dates when you should receive them and if a bill does not arrive contact your supplier.

Always redirect your mail if you move home and if you suspect your mail is being stolen, contact the Royal Mail. Ask a relative or friend to remove your mail when you are away.

If you think someone may have tried to get credit in your name, ask for a copy of your personal credit file from one of the three credit reference agencies: Callcredit, Equifax and Experian. Check bank statements immediately and if there are any unfamiliar transactions question them immediately.

Never give out passwords, personal or bank details over the phone or by email – even if the caller claims to be from your bank or a utility company.

Protecting your possessions: Actually, the chances of you having your bag snatched or your mobile phone stolen are quite low. Nevertheless, there are plenty of things you can do to make it even less likely. Carry your bag close to you with the clasp facing inwards and don’t carry large amounts of cash.

Keep bags close at hand and in public places hook the handle round a table of chair leg so it can’t easily be snatched away. Don’t flaunt expensive jewellery and possessions; it advertises them to a thief. be aware of your surroundings, especially if you are alone, avoid dark areas, passages and alleyways and carry valuables in separate places so if your bag is snatched you haven’t lost everything.

Take care of your bank cards and NEVER write down your PIN or tell it to anyone else. Try to use a machine located INSIDE the bank. It’s much safer and less likely to have been tampered with. If you can’t, select one on a busy street with good street lighting and shield the keyboard with your free hand when entering your PIN. Don’t leave phones and other items lying around at school or on pub tables and keep a record of your mobile phone’s IMEI number (dial *#06# to find it). Then your phone can be blocked if it is stolen. be careful where you use your phone especially in areas where thieves often operate. It’s an expensive item to replace and there is also the hassle of losing all your stored numbers.

Harworth & bircotes Town Council - March 2013 I DON’T USUALLY acknowledge

anonymous letters, but for once I am making an exception because I understand the concerns expressed that relate to road safety. I am using Harworth and bircotes Today as I have no other means of communicating with the writer. This letter referred to fencing on land privately owned, and therefore officially not the business of Harworth and bircotes Town Council.

However, I did make enquiries to the Planning Department at b.D.C. The answer is that fencing less than 1 metre high does not require planning permission. I suggest the writer of the letter talk to the landowner to discuss and hopefully address the issues highlighted.

TREES ARE ANOTHER issue that

cause problems, and again there is little we can do when it concerns a dispute between private landowners.

Local Councillors have on occasions managed to achieve success, on other occasions our requests for action have fallen on deaf ears; however we will continue to try to help wherever we can.

NEW BUS SHELTERS have appeared on bawtry Road to replace the old brick shelter and the one that was knocked down by a car. There are several sites where we would like to see shelters in place, so we will keep knocking on County Council’s door.

A BLOT ON THe LANDsCAPe. BAR 19, OR as many will remember

it, the Cinema (oh, happy memories of the Saturday Matinee) is undergoing a makeover. The owner requested a meeting with local councillors to outline his ideas and explore possible options for future use; one thing he is very keen on is restoring the original facade and improving the appearance of the building; so, when travelling up Scrooby Road in the future 26 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

people will not be met by the current eyesore. The owner is firstly repairing the roof so the building can dry out; he made me laugh when he said that whilst inside the building something prehistoric ran over his foot!

I can say no more until ideas are firmed up, but Council welcomes and supports this development.

I DON’T USUALLY report on issues relating solely to bassetlaw District Council, but the following items are, I believe, of particular interest to our community.

NeWs FrOM B.D.C. THIS IS THE busiest time of the

year for the Finance Department at b.D.C. because staff are preparing the budget for the next financial year.

Like most other councils, b.D.C. has to manage on less money each year because funding from Government continues to be cut; the situation was not helped this year by the lateness of the news of the actual amount to be received.

Just like you, councils have to balance income versus expenditure; this year they also had to account for Governmentled changes to the benefits Scheme, plus agree their own version of a local Council Tax – so there was much change to formulas and calculations.

My job at bassetlaw Council is Cabinet Member for Finance – not the easiest role in these austere times when difficult decisions have to be made in order to set a balanced budget. However, I am pleased that my Cabinet colleagues and Labour District Councillors agreed to keep Council Tax at nil increase for a fourth year; so some good news.

LOCAL AUTHOriTY MOrTGAGe sCHeMe (L.A.M.s.)

Nowadays it is hard for first time buyers to get a mortgage, mainly because most banks/building societies only offer a 75% mortgage; finding 25% deposit of the price of a house is simply too difficult for many people, hence the growth in rented accommodation. Mike Hill, Head of Finance at b.D.C. heard about the new Local Authority Mortgage Scheme; he and I met several times with Government representatives to explore the scheme further. We then made the proposal to Cabinet, and Labour Councillors have voted to support it.

sO HOW DOes iT WOrK? THe BAsiCs Are As FOLLOWs:• The scheme is for first time buyers only, who generally purchase their first home at the lower end of the housing market. As with any mortgage application, the building society carefully screens applicants to ensure they can afford the monthly repayments.

• bassetlaw District Council gives the building society a one-off lump sum e.g. £1million, which is returned to Council after 5 years with a small amount of interest – this will offset the interest b.D.C will have paid, because the money comes from ‘prudential borrowing’.

• Successful applicants are asked to pay a 5% deposit as a minimum payment, the money provided by the Council acts as the remaining 20%, thus

Yes, we have to borrow the money to give to the building society, but there never was a better time to borrow and yes, any interest we make will be used to pay the interest on that loan. but overall, we will be helping a number of residents who are desperate to get onto the property ladder. A win-win all round.

So when will it start? Well, sometime this year, as Notts. County Council are also going to adopt this scheme, so we have to wait for details on how much money from County will benefit bassetlaw residents; when that money has gone we will initiate our own scheme. My advice is to watch the local press for further information.

MEMBERS OF THE public have asked what has happened to the £50,000 provided by ASDA for improvements to the Town. This money has been paid and is held by bassetlaw DC who are looking at creating a Miners’ Memorial on land adjacent to ASDA.
