welcome to the MAY 2013 edition of Harworth & Bircotes Today.

‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’ English proverb

The origin of this saying dates back to the 18th century, its meanings however are less clear. The first part means simply ‘don’t discard your winter clothing’ but ‘till May be out’ has more than one interpretation! Some think it refers to the month of May, others believe it is the May blossom of the Hawthorne that we need to wait for. Which ever version you prefer there haven’t been many opportunities to discard winter coats yet this year, and I for one hope that May will bring with it the promise of warmer weather.

The June issue will be with you around the time of the Bank Holiday at the end of May, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 10th May quite early this month due to the way the weeks fall, so don’t miss out.

Best wishes, Paula x

Ups & downs

but still lots to play for!

as we approach the final month of the season there is still lots to play for up on scrooby road. The season has had lots of ups and of course a few downs but in the main the club has had a good season and with a bit of luck may even finish with a trophy or two. the club is striving to improve the facilities for spectators to come up and enjoy the Football and this summer is a big one for us, we have recently purchased a Canteen that will be situated in the Grounds of the 1st team pitch, this will be used as hospitality for oďŹƒcials and traveling spectators as well as our own. this is a big investment and we were delighted to purchase this from within the village also through Wintech, this has been funded by the numerous fundraisers we have had this year so all the hard work is being put back in. We hope to carry on and improve even further the grounds within our means, we really hope that the work done in the next few months will prove dividends for season 2013-2014. First team at the time of writing we are still well posistioned to finish in the top 4 which would be such an acheivement. Unfortuantly the club

4 4

was beaten in the Northern section of the Floodlit Cup Final going down 2-0 at home to AFC mansfield, what gave everyone a boost was the support that the team had with well over 100 spectators. it shows that the backing is there and is down to us to keep them coming back, a big thanks to all who were present, we hope to go that bit further next season and get some well long awaited silverware reserves go into the Final month with two semi-finals to compete in, one being the reserves league Cup in which they have defeated two teams in the league above, they know face radford again a league above but they have the quality so fingers crossed, the second is their league cup against Belper town reserves, currently top of the league, so we wish tony and the boys well and hope we can progress to the finals. third team have nearly completed their first season in a new league and with a near new team have held their own and will be looking to push on next term. Under 19’s go into the final month with outside chance of promotion to

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

Division 1 with the likes of matlock town, Buxton and Basford Utd in their league it would be some acheivement as nearly all of the teams in their league have senior sides leagues above ours, the lads will be the mainstay of the club for years to come so well done to all. the Club will for the first time in years will hold their presentation night with the Junior teams, we are trying our best to be a lot more inclusive and want all at the club to feel that they are a part of something. the Juniors are the future and with teams disappearing in the past few seasons it is vital that we build on what we have. Simple Weight

Loss is it really true that exercise can make you feel good?

answer: When you cycle, swim, run, or carry out any other form of endurance exercise, your pituitary gland releases substantial quantities of ‘endorphins’, chemicals which can block sensations of pain and produce overall feelings of euphoria.

do i need to go to the gym to exercise? answer: the simple answer to this is No! Walking, riding your bike, playing football with the kids are all great forms of exercise that do not need to be performed in the gym. everyday household chores such as cleaning and gardening also work the body and are all forms of physical activity.

is No! try using plastic bottles filled with water to make your own weights, or lifting a bag with books inside to provide resistance. tins of food can also be used as substitute weights, or why not use your own body weight to provide resistance. try doing exercises such as dips, squats, press ups, situps, lunges at home, try walking or running up and down the stairs to give your thighs a good workout?

Can you suggest anything i could do to become more active?

look at ways you can be more active in your everyday life. For example, could you walk up the stairs at work rather than taking the lift? Could you go for a walk in your lunch break? Could you walk the kids to school? try and be active around the home hovering, and dusting are all forms of physical activity. Why not put on some music and ‘dance’ i am not able to take up a regular whilst doing your cleaning. T

tenants & residents Association

THIS IS WHEN we look back on the highs and lows of our year. No organisation can operate without some disappointments, but hopefully some of our successes will more than make up for our failures. Due to the secretary and treasurer having been voted on to the h&B town Council they where not able to stand for the Committee. so we started our year with a new secretary, treasurer and vice Chair. WE ARE VERY happy that we have increased our membership, although we have lost one or two members as well. overall there is a stronger feeling that members are now becoming involved in events, so that is a definite improvement. our thanks go too margaret and Frank renner, reg mann, Pat robertson, mary thompson, rosemary Cox, Karen murphy, Jane vernon, Janet Flynn and marilyn Knight for giving up their time to assist with events. WE STILL HAVE issues with Dogs Fouling the streets, Children’s Play areas and Green open spaces; this may be one problem we may never resolve but we will continue to try. Cars parking on the pavements outside shops on scrooby road is a problem.

SOME OF OUR successes have included the Kick walls on the Wimpy estate; our thanks for these go to David linley and BDC parks and open spaces team. eight members pasted their level two in Food hygiene in Catering, the Coffee shop and Book stall, the outing to Knowsley safari Park, Blackpool and the pantomime at the majestic theatre retford. members held a successful cake stall at the safer Neighbourhood Police team fun day they also helped with the Christmas party held by the Police. OUR CHRISTMAS LUNCH at the Golf Club was as enjoyable as ever. the Christmas lights event at the town hall had been a resounding success the best year yet. our tombola stall was extremely busy along with the raffle, refreshments and our very popular santa’s Grotto; our funds were helped along very nicely. thank you to all members for their kind donations for this event. WE HAVE REPLACED the tuesday weekly advice surgeries 2.00-4.00pm with a craft afternoon where members can bring along their knitting, sewing, card making or any other hobby that they may like to share with other members and have a cup of tea and chat. We have set up a facebook

WE HAVE FINALLY seen a new shelter erected on Bawtry road opposite the Devonshire road Centre replacing the Brick one. WE ARE STILL working with the Police safer Neighbourhood team, A1 housing and the Bassetlaw’s District Council’s AsB team to combat the AsB taking place on the foot path that runs between then Game Cock and lindsey road, we are also working with BDC Drainage engineer with regard to the flooding at the junction of lindsey road / Beech road and the foot path that runs between Brookside Walk and snip Park Wood. WE HAVE WORKED very effectively with A1 housing, the h&B town Council, the Police, Nott’s CC, Bassetlaw District Council and which all the Committee believe assists in uniting our community, and we look forward to forging even greater bonds between us all. our thanks go, as always to the Police, PC Jim martin and PCso Kendra Jacobs who we are proud to work with; our thanks also go to sheila Place, our County Councillor, Dave Challinor, Frank hart, Bassetlaw District Councillors and town Councillor Brain letherland, for their support and generous donations. WE ALSO THANK steve Bowman, helen rodgers and June evans from harworth and Bircotes town Council without their help there would be no coffee shop. WE MUST NOT forget our tenants Participation officer, Jim Fieldhouse, who has supported the secretary and the trA through out the year. thank you Jim for being there for us when we ask for your help and advice, our thanks also go to Nicola Perkins from A1 housing Accounts who has been supporting our treasurer over the past year.

community We have just had a day out in Much Wenlock, the small shropshire town, similar in many ways to Tickhill, and with its own poetry festival, now in its 3rd year, with Carol ann duffy (poet laureate) as its patron. The highlight of our trip was not the poetry or the performances we saw, but the general activity in the town, of people getting together to enjoy events and discuss the relative merits of what they had seen. The town was very busy (many, presumably like us from elsewhere), the tea- shops and pubs were heaving and business was brisk. This is what lies ahead for us with the first T- Fest now looming in september. at Much Wenlock we paid proper ticket money for one evening event, more than the ticket price for a whole days worth of activities at T Fest, which is promising to be Yorkshire good value. Cast in Doncaster will be opening its doors soon, the new performance venue on sir Nigel Gresley square. it’s called CAst as it is at the heart of Don-CAst-er….and punning aside, a new cultural venue in Doncaster is a welcome thing and with the opening of its doors i very much hope that there will be some exciting and innovative, difficult and demanding work shown in the town. Garden View

if you’re reading this you probably have an interest in gardening, but even armchair gardeners must be happy that spring is now well under way. May brings with it a wonderful selection of flowers, mainly in cool blues, purples, pinks and whites, and some great fragrances too, including the heady scent of Lilac. it’s an old fashioned shrub which has fallen out of favour, and for the majority of the year it looks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bush smells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze. Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mown grass and you have the most perfect spring fragrance, better than any air-freshener. After a long winter with more snow than i can ever remember, and yet more depressing news about our economy, i think what we all need is to enjoy a little nostalgia; i’m not talking bunting here, but bedding plants. towards the end of the month is the time when bedding plants and other tender perennials can be planted outside. thousands of people will flock to garden centres up and down the country over the coming weeks, and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the year to the outdoor retail world. it’s an opportunity for the nurseryman (or woman) to display

A jar of nostalgia row after row of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray by tray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop. each standing to attention, faces held high, their label pointing forwards and each doing their utmost to shout “buy me, buy me”. the flowers shine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiled fruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bi coloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of blackberry and raspberry jellies? Choosing your colour scheme for this year’s bedding display (be that just the one hanging basket or a front garden that looks like a victorian public park) is exciting, and a totally personal task. i’ve know it can cause arguments between couples, but have also known marriages which have survived successfully on the basis that “you plant your side and i’ll plant mine”. there are those who like a multi coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed tray of Petunias for example), those who prefer to stick to a muted pallet of 2-3 ‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue and white) and then those trying to achieve a swiss

cottage look who might plummet for just the one (perhaps a red trailing ivy leafed Pelargonium). But whatever your preference i don’t think it really matters, because buying annual bedding plants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’s good for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant for passersby to enjoy, and most importantly great at making you feel happy at home. community Hello everyone, this has been another really busy month for us with a heavy influx of cats and dogs, but fortunately it has also been busy with people adopting our residents. Before anyone takes one of our dogs home they attend a saturday morning induction meeting which usually lasts for about an hour and a half. This enables everyone to ask as many questions as they have time for and is especially helpful to new dog owners. our dog listeners are very knowledgeable and do a great job of making a new dog owners life a little easier. i know i ask every month but we are really desperate for dog walkers. Come on everyone i am sure there are lots of people out there wanting to get fit and help a charity at the same time. We do what we can regarding fund raising and there are still tickets left for our latest fund raiser Wild West night at Ye old Belle at Barnby moor on the 8th June. tickets are £20 includes supper disco and a live band, Also raffle and prize for best dressed, we need to make this evening a success as the money we hope to raise will help to keep our dogs and cats well fed and watered. if anyone has any time on their hands and would like to involve themselves in fundraising please let us know, we always need help especially at our July dog show and sponsored dog walk at the end of the year. so please call us it anyone would like to become involved just call us on 01302 711330 or 07969 203206

Think ahead Travelling abroad? – think vaccinations and think documentation required from your GP surgery!

Are you going overseas for your holidays this year? if you are then please allow plenty of time for getting properly vaccinated and for any extra documentation required from your GP. there are many places in europe where you can go safely without needing to be protected by vaccinations. the general rule is that the further you are travelling and the more unusual the destination, the more likely you are to need vaccinations. many illnesses can be completely prevented or the risk of illness substantially reduced by efficient vaccination.

community Don’t leave a present for santa Claws this Christmas

A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Neil Bellamy.

Don’t lead a thief up your garden path The recent cold weather might have made spring a little late this year, but many of you will already have made a start on tidying up the garden after the ravages of the winter months. Cleaning out the garden shed, dusting down the lawnmower and making preparations for the long days of summer we all hope are just around the corner. But your garden shed can be a magnet for thieves so make sure you do not lead a thief up your garden path straight to your shed and its contents. sheds can be an easy target, so stop and think how much it would cost to replace what is stored in yours or in your garage. most thieves are opportunists – so if you toughen up on security in your shed or garage, an opportunist thief will usually move on. First of all, keep your shed and garage locked at all times. most garages are fitted with a lock, but the standard locks are very easy to open so fit additional locks to keep a thief out. Fit at least one good lock to your shed – better still two – and use hasps where the screws are hidden so a thief can’t simply unscrew it and get into your shed. if your garage or shed has a window, consider fitting window bars or at least a fit a curtain so a thief cannot see what is inside. they don’t break in for a look round – they break in because they can see something to steal. 22 22

mark your larger, more expensive tools with a permanent marker pen or a Cremark kit. it’s difficult for a thief to sell your lawnmower if it has your name and address written on it in large letters – and it will cut the grass just as well. Chain larger items together – it makes them difficult to carry away – and then lock the ends of the chain to the wall or the floor. Put All your tools away everY night and then make sure your shed and garage are locked. Fit an intruder alarm. they are very inexpensive, and make a real racket that will alarm you and your neighbours and scare off most thieves. And finally make it difficult for a thief to get to the rear of your property where most sheds are. Fit a high gate and keep it locked. thieves don’t like things that block their escape route and it’s difficult to climb a high gate or a fence carrying a lawnmower. And the long warm days of summer often herald an increase in auto crime so make sure your vehicle doesn’t become a target for a criminal. thieves are always on the look out for easy pickings and open car doors, windows and sun roofs are just what they are looking for. There are three basic rules for vehicle security 1. Always keep your vehicle locked. this includes the sunroof and windows even if you are only leaving it for a few seconds. it is amazing how many people still leave their vehicle unlocked, and

yet a few seconds is all the time it takes for a criminal to steal your car or your belongings. 2. Never leave anything in your car whether it is valuable or not, particularly when it is parked overnight. more than 60 per cent of thefts of and from vehicles occur when they are parked outside the home. if you really must leave items in your vehicle, lock them in the boot or out of sight and be particularly careful with expensive stereo units, mobile phones and sat navs. 3. think before you park. Park in busy well lit areas near CCtv cameras or in a police approved “Parkmark” car park. Always chain bikes, motorcycles and scooters to something fixed, like a security rail or post. enjoy the spring and summer sunshine, but let’s keep thieves where they belong – out in the cold. register your belongings on a site like www.immobilise.com so that if they are stolen and recovered by police you are more likely to be reunited with them. report suspicious activity around homes and gardens to police immediately on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. A1 Car Sales

community

a1 Car sales (doncaster) was founded in 2012 by Bircotes born 18year old reece Hoggatt.

reece has always been entrepreneurial and his Dad has been in the motor trade all his life, so with his contacts reece got started buying and selling cars. he started with 1 car in may 2012, and then started selling more and more until it got to the point where it turned into a full time job. so in November he made the decision to leave college and acquire a yard and start properly. so far this year he has sold over 25 cars and he now holds a stock of at

least 10 cars at any time. All priced up to around the £3000 mark. A1 Car sales are 1st car specialist’s, aiming to bring quality 1st cars to the people of harworth and Bircotes, and into south Yorkshire. in stock are cars such as vauxhall Corsas, volkswagen Polos, renault Clios & Fiat Puntos. people wanting smaller engined cars to create cheaper driving costs, so part exchange is available. Feel free to visit the yard and look around the stock. Based in shaws Yard (Next to police station) Barry shaw House, shrewsbury road, Bircotes, dN11 8de T

harworth & Bircotes town Council - mAY 2013 Pride In Your Community Have you noticed the daffodils in flower on the approach roads into our community? every year this Council plants more bulbs that naturalise and appear on an annual basis; we do this to improve the appearance of the Town, and for the same reason we put up hanging baskets along the shop fronts. People tell us the Town is looking much better, yet what do i hear from some residents? – “a waste of money”. What is wrong with these people, don’t they want to see improvements in their local environment? a man in Nottinghamshire was recently fine £415 for throwing a cigarette butt on the floor. Bassetlaw district Council have recently issued more fines than ever before for littering, flytipping and dog fouling, and are vigorously pursuing their new enforcement policy. Why dump your rubbish on the rest of us? With luck you, too, will get fined. in the first two weeks of April three people were identified as having fly-tipped in our community; one came from Bawtry. N.B. if you pay someone to remove your rubbish, make sure it is a reputable person. if that person does not dispose of your rubbish in the correct manner at a recognised site, you will also be fined; the law states that it is your rubbish and your responsibility, so please don’t be duped by some cowboy.

dogs: incidentally, if you want your dog neutering, the animal warden at Bassetlaw has some 24 24

free vouchers that are recognised by local vets. if interested, ring Nigel on 01909 533219 april saw the appearance, at last, of a Traffic enforcement officer from Bassetlaw district Council – something we have long been asking for. Parking on the pavement along the shop fronts is something Council gets the most complaints about, and at last the problem is being addressed. Motorists should note that the use of the parking bays is restricted to 1 hour; parking in the car park opposite is free, but don’t use the disabled spots unless you have a blue badge. and please, don’t park in the recess in the road next to the public toilets – if you do, you are blocking pedestrian access, and forcing them and users of mobility scooters onto the road. the traffic enforcement officer will be visiting harworth and Bircotes on a regular basis.

Developments Persimmon: There are a number of developments in the pipeline; one of these is the intention of Persimmon to build 232 new houses at the top of Bawtry road. The public consultation was held in april, and representatives from H&B Town Council have since met with Persimmon to

discuss their plans further. U.K. Coal: met with Council to discuss the transfer of a balancing pond to H&B. This pond is the last in a sequence of ponds and is the nearest to the 30mph limit sign on Blyth road. UK Coal will disconnect it from the other ponds nearby, and install a new pond; new drainage systems on the Colliery site will ensure any water from the Colliery will not enter the new pond. so what will this new pond be for? – to collect only surface rain water from the housing estate, soon to be built on the lower half of scrooby road. the law is that no company/person with a declarable interest can manage the pond, which means that the vendor of the building land (U.K. Coal) nor the purchaser of the land (Jones homes) can manage the pond; Notts County Council and the Water Board are happy to have h&B town Council – as an independent and recognised authority - take on that responsibility. What will that responsibility be? Basically, to mow the grass, keep the site tidy, and ensure public safety is upheld. Now, where can i get some crested newts....?

U.K. Coal will also be transferring that tiny piece of land near Colliery road/opposite asda

The council sees this as their contribution to conservation, and i wouldn’t argue with that.
