welcome WELCOME TO THE NOVEMBER

EDITION OF HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY.

by the time you receive this issue the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early delivery - don’t forget to change your clocks early on Sunday 28th October. It is not just the clocks that are changing this month; I am hoping that you will notice a few changes within this months edition. I finally decided that the time had come to employ a little help and to place the design and formatting of the magazine into the hands of a real graphic designer! I am very pleased with the results and I hope that it enhances your enjoyment of the magazine. Drop me a line and let me know, not forgetting to tell me what else you would like to see in your community magazine. The next edition will be distributed to you from 24th November. This will be the last magazine before Christmas and usually the busiest, please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 9th November. interview

LOCAL THREE PIECE The Pilots

produce songs that are epic. if their music was a landmark it would be visible from space. songs like ‘James Dean’ and ‘Flash Light’ are so gargantuan and timeless that it will be an injustice if these songs don’t eventually get played at an arena. i caught up with Luke their singer, songwriter and bassist before their gig at the O2 Academy in sheffield with Little Comets and General Fiasco: What are you up to at the moment? We’re getting ready for the gig at the O2 Academy on 25th October and we’ve just recorded a track called ‘You me History’ at Orion Studios in Rotherham. The track should be available via our website soon.

How do you write songs?

in the rehearsal space when we’re all contributing. Initial ideas can come from a guitar riff, vocal melody or a song strummed on an acoustic.

Who are you influenced by? Interpol, Killers, Athlete, The Smiths, Grandaddy, Roxy music.

What does the future hold for The Pilots? At the moment we’re concentrating on writing new songs and playing as many gigs as possible. We’re also playing and recording an interview in York for an ‘on the couch’ feature which will be broadcast on Student Tv. As well as all of that we should have an EP out before the end of the year. busy times for The Pilots…catch them now before you have to pay through the nose to see them at the motorpoint Arena. Go to http://www.the-pilots.co.uk for gigs and information. 

Our songs usually come together 12 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

Tickhill Parish Room festive plans CHRISTMAS PLANS CAN’T be ignored any longer! As far as bawtry Today is concerned we are now in November!! Despite the still lovely weather - it is definitely ‘almost Christmas’! In the Parish Room we are already preparing for Tickhill’s late Night Shopping event on the 29th November. I think this annual event will be busier and better than ever this year. Tickhill Together (the main organisers of the evening) have been working hard to add to an already successful occasion! There will be a wide variety of things going on that night - some old and some new. We will be having our usual refreshments in the Parish Room - mince pies, tea, coffee and hot chocolate and mulled wine, and John Sweed will be providing us with his

fabulous crepes! We will be open from 5.30 to 8.30 pm. The Christmas lights in Tickhill will be officially switched on at 6 pm. 24th December - We will be open for refreshments before, during and after the Carol Concert. Again we will be helping you keep warm on the night with hot drinks and mulled wine - and the usual lovely mince pies, and will be open from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Our lovely old building lends itself beautifully to a Christmas atmosphere - do call in on these two special evenings. We are also open for coffee every Saturday between 10 am and 12 noon where you will be made welcome. We are always looking for volunteers either for our regular Saturday mornings or on special occasions - so don’t by shy, pop in and offer - or ring me on 07840 419763 or Noreen on 01302 743293. You don’t have to volunteer for every Saturday, we have a rota, or you could just ‘do’ every now and again! Our regular classes are now back into the swing of things after the summer break - but we still have

plenty of room for your class, event, meeting, party or celebration. besides having the lovely ambience that comes with an old building, we have modern up to date facilities, so the best of both worlds. if you want to discuss a booking, or view the Parish room first, ring me on 07840 419763. November Cabaret in Everton

SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER

is the date for another of the popular Cabaret evenings that are hosted by the village Players (Everton). With the aid of a subsidy from Notts village ventures the Players are again able to present a top professional act. This time it’s ”The buffalo Gals”, who are fast becoming the country’s favourite old-time country string band. Firmly rooted in traditional American music, with an authentic sound driven by fiddle, banjo, percussive step dance, and soaring harmonies, their music is packed with all the excitement, passion and fun of Appalachian, bluegrass, blues and Cajun tunes and songs. The event will take place in Everton village Hall, which will be transformed

into an intimate performance venue, with professional staging and lighting and cabaret seating for diners, who will enjoy a hot meal before the performance and a home-made sweet course in the interval (special dietary requirements can be catered for). A licensed bar will be available, selling quality wines, beers and soft drinks. Tickets (priced at £15, including meal) are available from the Players box Office (01777 817275) or via their web site (www.evplayers.org.uk) The Players’ last two cabaret evenings sold out, so customers are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. 

Lions ready to roar at NEW VENUE THE TICKHILL AND DISTRICT

lions are preparing for a very busy period between now and Christmas. The first event being organised by the lions is the annual bonfire and Firework Display which will be held at Tickhill Cricket Club on Saturday 3rd November from 5.30pm. by now you should have seen the many posters advertising the event in shops and around the village. A couple of races nights are being organised and we will also be manning a stall at the Tickhill late Night Shopping evening. We will be selling our Christmas raffle tickets for only £1 each with the chance to win many fabulous prizes including a weekend city break. All proceeds, as always, will be given to local good causes. Once November is over the lions will not be ‘putting their feet up’, in fact the total opposite by putting their best foot forward helping Santa on his trips around the surrounding neighbourhoods. look out for details of times and routes in the next issues. Your continued support is very much appreciated enabling The lions to help many local people & groups.

101 Police non emergency number THERE HAS BEEN a recent enquiry from a member of public that the non emergency number for Nottinghamshire Police of 101 is not the correct number for Nottinghamshire Police. I can reassure and confirm the public that the Non emergency number for Nottinghamshire Police is 101. When you ring this number you are then transferred to an automated voice message which says Thank you for calling 101 please select from the 2 following options for

Nottinghamshire Police press 1 or for South Yorkshire Police press 2. To hear these options again press zero or press hash for the operator. Sometimes the options are press 1 for South Yorkshire Police or press 2 for Nottinghamshire Police. When you select the option you are then transferred to the control room of the force you selected. For clarification although Harworth and bircotes has a South Yorkshire postcode the area is covered and Policed by Nottinghamshire Police. 

local wildlife

Worms Winter and

Wildlife Somewhere warm & safe to curl up . . . AS WINTER APPROACHES, wildlife body-clocks are already preparing for the lower temperatures and scarcity of food. surprisingly, there are only 3 mammals that actually hibernate in the UK; the hedgehog, bat and dormouse. All other mammals fatten up or store food and some just prepare to slow down and sleep a lot. Just like us, when it’s cold outside, wildlife want somewhere warm and safe to curl up and some comfort food to keep them happy. sO WHAT CAN We DO TO HeLP WiLDLiFe sUrvive? Gardens, yards, tubs, window boxes – good news – leave them well alone! leave fading blooms and seed heads just where they are over the winter – fallen leaves make great mulch so scatter them on your garden – if you feel you must tidy up something, then make a ‘brush pile’ of old branches, twigs, stalks and leaves in a quiet part of the yard or garden. Dried, dead and decaying vegetation provide food and shelter for a whole range of 22 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

insects that then becomes food for small mammals and birds. Ponds, water features and bird baths – spend the time you’ve saved by not tidying the garden to keeping these valuable sources of water ice-free instead. The further wildlife has to fly and roam to find running water, the more energy they use and the more food they need. Water is crucial for their survival so every drop counts.

WOrMs –

Want to know more about wildlife or wormeries? Then please contact the team at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trusts’ idle valley Nature reserve, North road, retford DN22 8sG on 01777 713945 or askidlevalley@ nottswt.co.uk 

Now is a good time to think about the worms in your wormery. Some people relocate their wormeries into a shed or garage – if this isn’t an option, don’t worry. Worms will slow down over winter, but they won’t starve; they will simply recycle the compost waste they have already made. Fill the air gap on top of the waste organic matter with fallen deciduous leaves and make sure the lid fits properly so rain doesn’t enter and then freeze. Use crumpled newspaper if you don’t have any leaves. It is quite normal for some worms to die over winter if they are outside, but they will have laid eggs which will hatch as soon as the weather warms up again, replenishing your worm population.  To advertise CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

I am a huge fan and highly recommend this show. born in 1974 and based in York, Hearld studied illustration at Glasgow College of Art before completing an mA in natural history illustration at the Royal College of Art. His work is now exhibited all over the UK and commissions include set design for 2005 film Nanny mcPhee and a range of ceramics for Tate. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - November 2012 29TH OCTOBER:

Stagecoach is introducing an extra route by combining the X30 and 31A and renumbering them 30 and 30A. The aim is to link blyth with the Airport, thus providing a two-way service around Harworth and bircotes. This route will operate in both directions around milne Road and Sandrock Road during the daytime, plus blyth gets an extra trip in the afternoon. Local Lynx timetables will be distributed. 

A NeW DeveLOPMeNT

At a recent meeting with two businessmen, we were shown the plans for a development on land between the A1m and b6463 blyth Road. The proposed development consists of offices and large units suitable for both manufacturing and warehousing. much background work has been ongoing with all key agencies such as Environment and Highways, until finally the plans are complete and has now been submitted to bassetlaw District Council for planning approval, hence it now falls into the public domain. This is a major development and getting it approved will take a few months; however I am hopeful that this is a venture that will offer employment to local people in the near future. 

FLY TiPPiNG

You may remember reading that someone had dumped their rubbish behind Cumberland Court. The good news is that the person responsible has been fined. This Council will continue to seek to prosecute all fly tippers. A resident from bircotes has also been fined £55.00 by bassetlaw District Council for littering. You can ask bassetlaw District Council to remove larger, bulky items of furniture such as a mattress or settee. There is a charge of £5.40 per item, but that is much cheaper than paying a fine. Contact Environment Services on 01909 534501 to find out more; they also remove any materials containing asbestos. 

26 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

The bus shelter that was knocked down by a car on bawtry Road next to the Devonshire Road Community Centre has been replaced. We are now waiting for Nottinghamshire County Council to supply a new shelter on the opposite side of the road.  I am impressed by the quality of the work on the Scrooby Road/Shrewsbury Road junction. Pedestrian safety as well as traffic control has obviously been given a high priority; I understand from Highways that the wide ‘mouth’ of Shrewsbury Road demanded that railings & pedestrian crossings be installed. They also tell me their design discourages any large vehicles using the top of Shrewsbury Road to turn around. 

LeNGTHsMAN PiLOT sCHeMe:

Nottinghamshire County Council is making a short video about the scheme, and chose Harworth and bircotes as one area to film... so fame at last for the brearley family. And talking of fame, matthew brearley is boxing at Sheffield Ice on November 9th, so good luck to him. The County Council also intends conducting a survey in those communities where the lengthsman scheme is operating. So, you may well get stopped in the street sometime in November and be asked questions about the scheme. 

COMMUNiTY CeNTres

You may have read in the Worksop Guardian that a review of all Community Centres across bassetlaw has taken place and that the beverley Road Centre is one that will close. The review found that

some Centres were better used than others; for those with little usage the economics proved too strong a driver to maintain the status quo. The truth is that bassetlaw District Council can no longer afford to subsidise buildings that stand unused much of the time. Fortunately, there is available capacity at the Devonshire Road Centre to accommodate the two groups currently using beverley Road once a week. bassetlaw District Council is planning to then convert the empty Centre into a two or three bedroom bungalow. Alternative arrangements will be put in place for any voting activity, as and when the need arises. So the saying ‘use it or lose it’ really does apply in these times of ongoing cuts to bassetlaw District Councils funding from the Government. 

HAve YOU HeArD OF AUrOrA? Cllr. Frank Hart and his wife Eileen certainly have, and they do a lot of work to support it. Aurora is a v Cancer Charity well recognised for the good work they do in supporting people through the rehabilitation stage of treatment. They have been very successful in Doncaster and are hoping to build on that success in bassetlaw. bassetlaw District Council has come to an agreement with the Charity, who will be based in the Old library in Worksop. Some of you will know this is a listed building with a stained glass rotunda in the ceiling; sadly it is in much need of attention. However, I am hopeful that the partnership with bassetlaw District Council and lots of fund-raising will ensure Aurora becomes well established in our area. 

Why do we not have a bank? ONE OF THE most frequent questions I and my fellow councillors are asked is, if we are a Town why do we not have a bank ? The simple truth is that H&b are not considered a viable commercial proposition to a bank, as you all know the last bank closed here many years ago for this very reason, and the situation has deteriorated since then, not improved. I recently found an article in one of the National Daily’s Headed The Towns the banks Abandoned. Which clearly indicates that we are not unique, there are 1,200 Towns and large villages in the UK now without banks some of these towns have a population of 20,000 + .During 2011 the big Five banks closed a branch every 48 hours, one in 4 of these closures left a Town without a bank, and in some cases without a cash machine Our Chairman, mrs Evans, has worked very hard to try and persuade a bank to come back to H&b but currently there is just not the volume of business to make it a viable proposition. You have our assurance that it is one of our priorities to get a bank here, but given the current financial climate, please do not hold your breath. BriAN LeTHerLAND H&B Town Councillor. 
